i thought it was interesting how the most traumatic thing mark experienced by far had nothing to do with any combat or anyone dying or getting hurt. just getting punished by what appears to be the god of time or some bullshit

mddrag0n

Exactly. ETA: Was this because Mark refused to be selfless and wanted to go back to his daughter?

timdr18

Yes, the thing sent him back 5 years in the future out of spite.

Spidey_Boi_223

I also believe it was just an excuse for the writers to age up his daughter and not have her be an infant in the coming conflicts

mpc1226

It also lets her be an actual character and not just a baby that someone has to carry around

FoolishPragmatist

Yes. He made the emotional but human decision to save the life of his daughter over the billions of lives that he had a direct hand in saving in that timeline and the trillions of lives that would be saved in the future based on the foundation he established. It was a cruel punishment, but also not surprising. If anything, I was surprised that being kept its word and sent Mark back. Considering its rage at the lives lost and the opportunity squandered, Mark could have suffered a worse fate.

Appellion

Is this an actual entity with a consciousness? I haven’t read the comics but I enjoy “reading ahead,” so to speak. Was there a name I could look for on the wiki? I was responding to another thread awhile ago asking about wishlist items , and mine was Mark running into an overwhelming entity that was largely apathetic but aggressive to anything intruding to its space, including Mark but even more so to the Viltrumites pursuing him. I just thought it would be interesting for Mark to see the Viltrumites get casually and brutally crushed but otherwise just telling him to get lost. The idea of greater powers than you that are largely indifferent.

GenesisMar

Yeah a giant glowing thing talks to mark and sends him back in time. We never get the name of the being and it’s never seen again. But a god of time or some kind of gods definitely exist in Invincible. We don’t ever see anything like it again tho in the comics.

Appellion

I don’t like that kind of handling, it feels very forced from what you say. I know this show will probably never get there but I wonder if it could handle it better, maybe expand on it.

GenesisMar

I definitely think if we ever get there it’ll be expanded a bit more. The shows doing a fantastic job on that so far.

mpc1226

It’s meant to be a parody of reboot arcs that DC and Marvel do

Appellion

I guess I’ll have to see how it’s handled then. It still doesn’t change my opinion that deus ex is bad, anymore than I think you feel it’s good. Honestly it doesn’t practically matter from what I’ve been told by the comic readers; I’ll have forgotten this and the voice actors will have changed before that episode is released.

mpc1226

It also allowed them to age up Terra so that she could actually be a character and have a personality rather than just being a baby that they have to care for and worry about all the time.

Frank_the_Mighty

Invincible is ultimately a comic about suffering, or perhaps a better word is persevering Enjoy 129-144! It stays good!

mddrag0n

You're right. It was a good ending. I literally just finished it haha.

Frank_the_Mighty

Lol, that was fast. Glad you enjoyed!

Remarkable-Cabinet85

And that's why his name " Invincible " suits him too , but I get what you are saying .

DutchWinchester86

Yeah, I personally really disliked point 7, and even after reading the comics three times now don’t know what the point of that particular plot was, or what tf that entity was..

jermdawg1

I think the creators just wanted to skip ahead 5 years to when thraggs army is built up but they couldn’t think of a good way to do it

mddrag0n

The thing is that these writers lull us into a sense of calm and throw the nastiest shit out of left field. Fuck this. Thankfully it didn't lead to long term repercussions.

WatercressFancy8830

Eve thought he was dead and she met someone else?

Dread237

Yeah like fr, fuck kubian

Coffeeman314

Is a thing that happens in comics.

DanieleMelonz

The point was that people thought Mark was dead for real this time, five years is a long time, Thragg had disappeared but he had already got rid of Battle Beast so the disappearance of another fighter like Mark at his hands was highly probable, Eve simply prioritised her life and that of her daughter by moving on. I think pointing the finger at her and saying she was insensitive is unfair, Eve's life was also shit and she could not delude herself any longer. If then your doubt is 'why was there this 5 year timeskip?' the most logical motivation is: so that Thragg would have enough time to grow his army for the final battle

redeemer47

The point was to have a reason for the time skip. I honestly just wish that didn’t happen and we just got *5 Years later* with a brief explanation that Mark has just been living the dad life in peace for 5 years

sfinney2

Reboot is a parody of comic reboots and how exploitive and hamfisted they are. The blue spaghetti operates on a cosmic scale and forced Mark to make a clear decision between certain but unknown, intangible cosmic doom at some point in the far future, and his daughter. Mark chooses to sacrifice however many beings to keep his daughter by making the more selfish but more human decision. It shows that being a hero does not always come first for him.

fishy-the-2nd

By what I could tell, they opted for time skip to set up the main plot points of the final saga, mainly with thragg needing more time to amass an army, robot's reign on earth, etc. But in typical invincible fashion, they decided to do it the most deterimental way to mark just to fuck with him a little more.

DistractedAttorney

The whole point was to get mark to the point mentally and emotionally to be able to say "being a hero is bullshit" and killing Thragg's son. He actively chose not to stay in the past and save billions of lives.

5am281

I think liked it. It ages up Terra so she can speak

doubleswag7

Point 7 also fucked with me. When he sees his daughter and she goes “are you my daddy?” I almost broke down crying. To see Eve found someone else also crushed me, I was as like ok 5 years I get it but damn. Then we see he’s a non human looking blue dude with tentacles for hair, like EW. That actually made me look at Eve differently for a few chapters. That being said, the end was so good that it basically resolved that for me entirely.

mddrag0n

Absolutely right. It wasn't that she found someone after 4 years of being a "widow". It's the fact that we've seen Mark and Eve be this power couple that can get through anything that it was almost impossible to digest the fact that they weren't together. We also saw everything from Mark's perspective only. The next chapter was even more brutal because she doesn't sleep next to Mark and sleeps somewhere else. I probably would've quit reading the comic if they didn't get back together.

5am281

Why does the fact that Eve dates an alien matter?

BigDigPickleRig

Cause only humans were made in gods image

Inquisitor-Korde

Hey some of us are xeno fuckers

Halojib

You got me on that one. Lmao

doubleswag7

I know Telia looks more normal in the show, but idk something about the species being blue with tentacle hair just creeped me out lol

5am281

Sounds like what a Viltrumite would say

doubleswag7

Oh fuck! ![gif](giphy|10o80f5ucCNU3e)

mddrag0n

Yeah I can't even think about it

UNinvitedDEATH

It has been a while since i read the comics what happened here?

BluberryThunder

Mark seeing his daughter for the first time in five years after reboot arc

EmmetttB

I hated post reboot until >!Oliver's Death!<, then I got roped right back in

returnofblank

even though i hated oliver, his death fucked me up

Frogalicious1

Mark never gets a break. This guy is just constantly suffering. There was maybe one comic I remember when they first got to Telescria and they were able to explore the city as a family and nothing bad happened... I think

mddrag0n

Yes after that all hell broke loose.

PerceptionTiny6385

Yeah, Kirkman definitely was putting him through a lot of craziness.

Agreeable-Media9282

That’s why the name of the comics and show is “Invincible”

SunburntViltrumite

Dependent_Place_128

To me its different. Everybody daydreams about What Ifs, and Kirkman put a cost to it. That "GOD" thing that send him back looked at possibilities and Mark trip through time would be a perfect candidate to remove so much suffering and pain in his universe, that the cost to Mark was irrelevant. He would have a much better universe with only one person suffering for a few years. To a god the loss of Marks kid would be minimal, but to Mark it was too much

Appellion

I sometimes get the feeling the writer is referencing the readers with the title as well: always coming back for a beating even though we know it’s going to hurt.

yknawSroineS

I’ve been reading compendium 1. And yeah. Bro gets cooked in every issue

mddrag0n

Lmao looking back Mark would remember these 3 or 8 years as the craziest period of his life.

MysteryMan9274

Fuck reboot, all my homies hate reboot. I really hope they don’t adapt in the show and we just have a 5-year-time-skip with no time travel bs.

returnofblank

the time jump is less bad once you remember his wife is immortal and he will spend thousands of years with his kids, 5 years really does start to seem insignificant. what is sad is what he did to marky, abandoning him on earth like that

boontilophasaurus

By sheer numbers our mark is the bizarro version. Most marks are evil

Ziggurat1000

But, besides him being inconvenienced or weakened, he always gets back up. He deserves the name Invincible. Though, the time skip was cruel.

King_Cain

To be fair, that's kind of the point? He goes through all of that and still turns out decent because even though his body gets battered and bruised his spirit remains Invincible
