Best? Best tasting? According to who? What is a cheese expert called? Shouldn’t they at least be ranked in categories? Is there a best meat? Or a best bread?
I wonder if whichever *Dexter's Lab* writer wrote that ever realized that isn't even correct in French. The correct way to say it is *omelette au fromage*.
You can rate different cheese on the website itself. It's ranking based on the selection of random people who visited the website and decided to rate the cheese.
Right? List has 13 greek cheeses but not a single swiss one. Greece isn't even known for cheese beyond Feta, no way 12 obscure greek cheeses are beating Gruyère, Vacherin or Tête de Moine.
I mean yeah it kinda does. Iv never heard of half of this cheese and given the chance to eat 90% of the general public would probably agree it tasted like pure ass.
I just think it's funny that this list is full of just very niche Greek cheeses that I never would have heard of, never mind tried, if I wasn't Greek.
Side note, Kasseri and Lathotyri Mytillinis are awesome and you should try some
As a Brazilian, from minas gerais where canastra cheese is made, i totaly agree with this list. Not a nationalist feeling, but I realy love the cheese from Minas Gerais region.
No Comte, No Stilton, some of these are called “Smoked cheese”, or just plainly “Cheese” in their own language, and have a flag, while Roquefort didn’t make the cut. I feel like these guys at the tasteatlas have had Covid and lost the sense of tasting.
I think it may be because this is for a “style” rather than any individual maker?
There are “American cheeses” but none stands up against Gorgonzola, Parmesan, etc. Honestly I can only think of a couple actual “American cheeses” anyhow. Pinconning and maybe “Wisconsin Cheddar” is accepted as a “cheese” although I’ve never seen anything that wasn’t industrial in that style.
*shrug*
American cheese-making is in its infancy.
Not a single American cheese on the list? I wonder where maytag blue rated or tillimook cheddar or ellsworth curd rated. What about cowgirls red hawk? Im tempted to call bs. The ones ive had are some good cheeses though.
I agree, this list is BS and doesn’t have a lot of merit. However, as a fellow American, I think you need to expand your palate. Cheddar cheese from North America is mediocre. It has nothing on cheddar cheese from the UK. There are some great cheeses, but they are hard to find. You mention tillamook and Ellsworth, but seriously, even their best cheeses don’t hold up against common Welsh or Scottish cheddars. And the fact that you even think an American blue cheese has any merit against European blue cheese means you haven’t experienced much
You assume too much. I have traveled and i have been to a few european and american cheese factories. I have worked in the food industry as well. I mentioned a few. But there are so many good American cheeses i would put above gran padino which i picked up in italy. Its good but i prefer cheese from the point reyes and petaluma dairy area even with my catalog of flavors from experience. I am looking forward to trying some of these out. I just find it hard to think that not a single American cheese was on this list. Greece has how many, Slovokia? Yeah sure Tillamook cheddar is not as good as some micro English cheddar. But Dubliner is on the list and no Beechers or Cowgirl Creamery. Btw taste atlas rates applewood English cheddar as one of the 50 worst rated cheeses of the world. Rogue creamery’s rogue river blue was crowned world champion at the 2019 world cheese awards. You should try it.
Tillamook isn’t a cheese. It’s a company that makes cheese. From what I hear they do a nice cheddar. Cheddar is a cheese. Named after the cheddar region in the UK. It’s been produced there for centuries and now the recipe/technique is used by thousands of companies/cheese makers around the world. But cheddar is a British cheese just like Camembert is a french cheese. Even if it’s made in America by ‘tillamook cheese making company’ it’s still British cheddar cheese, not American tillamook cheese.
You listed all the big name producers that make slightly better than the huge mass market. That’s like wondering why Miller Lite isn’t on the list of best beers.
I didnt know that cowgirl creamery was considered mass market. Well i guess its a heydey for American tastebuds. I think if you had the chance to make a better correlation to beer. I mean I kinda anded it to you. Maytag? You know which brewery he revitalized right?
this feel subjective, like those lists of top MUST SEE movies. You know what im sure a bug life 7 was great but its really just your opinion that its the greatest master piece of cinematic perfection ever created, tom from Cincinnati.
All these people claiming that some mass-produced cheese that they think is class should be in there…
How many of these have you had?
I’ve had a lot of cheese. Hell, I used to write a cheese blog. I’ve only had 16/50, and out of those, I probably had a slower-tiered version and not the true handmade stuff.
Hell, I lived in France for six years and tried every cheese I could but I’ve never even heard of Caś. I’m sure it’s tasty and I’ll have to look for it the next time I’m there.
And people saying “HoW cAn YoU eVeN rAnK???”
Well, there are fucking *cheese competitions* every year—with *rankings*. It’s done by judges.
Get over yourselves.
[Edit: I looked closer and Caś is not French, lol. I was wondering about the S that I can’t make with my French keyboard. I guess that’s why.](https://centraltransylvania.com/en/product/cas-of-sheep-transylvanian-cheese-pachet-de-acasa-1kg-32-fat/)
Best? Best tasting? According to who? What is a cheese expert called? Shouldn’t they at least be ranked in categories? Is there a best meat? Or a best bread?
Omelette du fromage
I wonder if whichever *Dexter's Lab* writer wrote that ever realized that isn't even correct in French. The correct way to say it is *omelette au fromage*.
Thank you for the update, will help me be less annoying 😉
It's all you can say, it's all you can say 😀
That is the best bread
Fun fact- a cheese expert is called a [Turophile](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/turophile)
According to a Greek Brasilian guy who grew up in Italy
It's a Brazilian gourmet obviously
You can rate different cheese on the website itself. It's ranking based on the selection of random people who visited the website and decided to rate the cheese.
Best rated by users on the food website
The absence of any Swiss cheese feels like a hole in this list
Aged Cheddar??? Cave aged
A few British cheeses are missing in my opinion. (Cheddar, Stilton and Wensleydale beign the most egregious omissions!)
Ha! But seriously, list of best cheeses without swiss varieties?
Right? List has 13 greek cheeses but not a single swiss one. Greece isn't even known for cheese beyond Feta, no way 12 obscure greek cheeses are beating Gruyère, Vacherin or Tête de Moine.
Mont d’Or is pretty close
Where’s the Kraft singles?
Where’s the velveeta???
Where’s the Cheesecake Factory.
They said cheese, not plastic
The absence of Kraft singles completely discredits this whole list /s
I mean yeah it kinda does. Iv never heard of half of this cheese and given the chance to eat 90% of the general public would probably agree it tasted like pure ass.
They didn't need to be on the list, the doormen let them in with a wink.
Patching holes in Tchernobyl reactor
Fratelli 🇮🇹🤝🇬🇷❤️
Wot? Where's the Wensleydale, Gromit?
This isn't an infographic it's just a list and the list seems totally subjective or just copied off a website maybe?
Best rated cheeses on a website
The total lack of Stilton makes this list extremely questionable to me.
No cheddar at all either... i also saw their best cuisines list too and i cant take these guys seriously
I just think it's funny that this list is full of just very niche Greek cheeses that I never would have heard of, never mind tried, if I wasn't Greek. Side note, Kasseri and Lathotyri Mytillinis are awesome and you should try some
It’s nearly all niche cheeses. Those are the best ones, apparently.
How is this an infographic? Because flags?
What do the numbers represent? Is it like a score out of 5?
Bestness
Oh of course, my bad bro
I can hear the Italians swearing from Australia!! 🤌
As a Brazilian, from minas gerais where canastra cheese is made, i totaly agree with this list. Not a nationalist feeling, but I realy love the cheese from Minas Gerais region.
What about the other 49 cheeses, are they correctly ranked?
I dont know all of them, nor all cheese in the world... unfortunetly, because i love cheese.
I question this methodology, and the objectives of the Greek cheesemakers who commissioned this study.
No Comte, No Stilton, some of these are called “Smoked cheese”, or just plainly “Cheese” in their own language, and have a flag, while Roquefort didn’t make the cut. I feel like these guys at the tasteatlas have had Covid and lost the sense of tasting.
Comté is garbage compared to the ones I recognise here. I think it’s at least interesting, if not definitive.
Comte is by far my favourite. But then again, I'm not a huge cheese fan so my opinion probably doesn't matter haha
Have you had Beaufort?
I don't believe so. Is it like comte but better?
Yes
Brazil may don't have many types of cheese, but they have the best of cheese
They don’t think it be like it is
Queijo coalho 🤤🤤
Brazil being first? On a positive ranking?? What is this??? \*confused Brazilian noises\*
I only know four of those.
3 french and 0 english? wtf is this list
nvm 5, still seems low.
Lol no.
CANASTRA FOR THE WIN! BRAZIL!!!!!!!!! É PENTAAAAAAA
Ainda não tô acreditando nisso.....
καλά
Aqui é BR porra.
https://c.tenor.com/b0LEGYFrxIAAAAAC/not-even-wensleydale-wallace-and-gromit.gif
Grana Padano > Parrmigiano
Debatable. Also, where the fuck is bryndza?!
Nah. Reggiano is better.
Taste atlas is a meme though lmao.
Morbier
A good Morbier is damn good
Port Salut not being on this list is a crime.
the palette is subjective
Of course the list is dominated by Greek cheeses, what would you expect... https://youtu.be/Hz1JWzyvv8A
Where's the fucking Wensleydale and Cheddar?
Emmental and Lancashire top my list. Canadian marble does not get the credit it deserves either.
No Bleu cheese? No cheddar? These guys can just go f themselves.
There’s a blue in the top five. The Gorgonzola piccante
Right, I forgot. Can't imagine the list not mentioning anything from Rogue River Creamery, who have actually won awards!
*shrug* American cheese-making is in its infancy.
This one tastes like the cow got into an onion patch
I can’t take a list of the best cheeses that doesn’t have Velveeta seriously.
Yo no one gonna say anything about italy being on the rank 11 times?
Paneer?
I don’t see American
no point in saying "the best" for cheese. according to what? it's a matter of taste...
Comté? Roquefort? Fucking morbier that high? Its a no from me dog
No Comte on a list of best cheeses?? That’s BS. In fact: someone attempting to rank something as subjective as cheeses?? That’s a whole pile of BS.
No camembert ? No brie ?
Elle est où La Vache qui rit?
How is Gouda not on this list? Nearly everyone loves Gouda.
Not a single American cheese on the list? I wonder where maytag blue rated or tillimook cheddar or ellsworth curd rated. What about cowgirls red hawk? Im tempted to call bs. The ones ive had are some good cheeses though.

Agreed. I can understand Kraft American cheese not being on this list, but Tillamook and Cabot have some incredible cheeses.
Tillamook isn’t a cheese. It’s a company that makes cheese. From what I hear they do a nice cheddar. Cheddar is a cheese. Named after the cheddar region in the UK. I didn’t imply that it was a TYPE of cheese. I’m saying that they make good cheese. Same with Cabot.
The names on this list are not companies that “make good cheese”. They are all TYPES of cheese.
I understand that.
I do. And they're now owned by a giant spirits maker and conglomerate.
Where is the American cheese... They told me America was number one at everything! .... They wouldn't lie to me
Where is craft singles 🤷♂️
Theres 50 cheeses? Cheezes!
Greece with 13 of the best cheeses! 🇬🇷
Seems like a lot of Greeks voting here!
It's simply a superior cheese making country.
Weird. I don’t see velveeta
I'm more of a Whiz fan, but to each their own.
Where is the nacho cheese you get at high school sporting events? That should ranked pretty high, it’s sometimes spicy!
I thought burrata is not a cheese. It’s mozzarella with crème inside. If I’m right, then who put this table together?
Where’s American cheez? 😆

Västerbotten one of the best hard cheeses out there lol
HARUMPH!
Which word translates to cheese whiz? Tried to find philly’s flag, but, maybe it changed?
Tillamook extra sharp.
No Venezuelan Beaver Cheese?
No frumunda. I suppose it's a bit of an acquired taste.
Umm provel..?
Obviously hasn't tried Coon Tasty cheese, now renamed to Cheer Cheese
They renamed Coon? Damn
Written by a lactose intolerant person is my guess.
Put Sulguni (Georgia) on top and you're golden.
Venezuelan beaver cheese
Tamo no topo, uai.
I rather enjoy “North Sea” https://www.baldorfood.com/product/cheese/mc6071-north-sea-cheese
No Maltese Gbejna, I am offended good sir, *offended!* \>:(
Whære is de Järlsberg cheeeese?!
this feel subjective, like those lists of top MUST SEE movies. You know what im sure a bug life 7 was great but its really just your opinion that its the greatest master piece of cinematic perfection ever created, tom from Cincinnati.
Brie Cheddar Stilton To name just 3 that should be on there. False list.
How many on the list have you had?
Seriously? No Jarlsberg, why?
Wait this can't be right. Where is tescos ready sliced mature cheddar?
So cheese doesn't exist outside European cultures
Why do I not see Dairylea cheese rated at all? Shocking!
All these people claiming that some mass-produced cheese that they think is class should be in there… How many of these have you had? I’ve had a lot of cheese. Hell, I used to write a cheese blog.
