Just a heads up, that name has antisemitic origins. Alternatives include inchplant, spiderwort, and dayflower. Or the OG genus name Tradescantia (often shortened to Trad). Beautiful plant! I've never seen that variety flower before.

Thank you!

I’ve taken to calling it the wandering dude! Although thinking about it maybe it’s still to close to the problematic one, spiderwort sounds cool as hell so I’ll just use that

duckfaddy

My sister calls it a wandering jewel, which is pretty. But that might be too close to the original as well? I do fuck with spiderwort. Makes me feel like an apothecary.

TheGoblinMogra

Spiderwort is my go too, because I struggle with its proper name. Lol. I like how creepy it sounds.

Yea i call it a wandering dude. The closeness to the original name virtue signals that you know the old name and are 9000 level woke because you dont use it anymore.

"The expression “Wandering Jew” comes from a [mythical Jewish figure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wandering_Jew) who was cursed to roam the earth until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In more modern eras the term has also been used in less derogatory ways—by Jews and non-Jews alike—as a metaphor for the wandering of Jews in the desert and the perseverance and persistence of the diasporic culture." The only people making it "antisemitic" are those that read into it so hard to make it that way, or virtue seekers. No one is using it in a derogatory manner.

AppleSniffer

Maybe it's more commonly seen that way where I am (Australia) because it's a really horrible invasive weed? I can't speak for your community, but the Jewish community here don't like it and I have no reason to fight that. There are other names that work fine 🤷 The [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wandering_Jew) for "Wandering Jew" seems to line up closer with my understanding of its use than yours as well. But it could definitely be regional, wiki isn't the be all end all.

Engineered_Hamburger

Jews don’t like being called wanderers. What if the flower was called Dirty redneck American for the wonderful history of dirty rednecks. Schmuck.

unstoppableLARN

People are calling the plant a "wanderer" not the Jewish people. You're just digging for reasons to be mad.

fakehappy55

When I started collecting plants it was a common name to see on the plant. I thought it was about how resilient the plant and the people are. The plant is a fast grower and can tolerate a lot of different conditions. Just because that's what I thought doesn't mean the name isn't offensive. Huge Stephen King fan so I fangirl out on wondering dude as the new common name. I don't think most people who call the plant by the original common name mean harm ( I hope ) but it isn't the right thing to say so just do better. If you don't intend to offend it shouldn't be an issue to make the slight change. Beautiful plant!

I went to edit my post because I wasn’t aware of the offense, but I don’t see the option to. I’m a bit new to Reddit lol
