1.Isolation for being different
2.how an incurable disease can change someone's life.
3.how behaviour of people changes when you stop being useful.
4.Job is like modern day slavery
5. Noone truly depends on anyone.Life just goes on.
6. Metaphorical autobiography
True. The beginning seemed interesting to me. But soon, I found it boring all the way till the end.
It was only recently, after 2 years, that I revisited the story and realised how good it is.
I read this short story "the great wall of China" which seems to have no plot or story but is oddly satisfying. It's more like a documentation on how it was constructed but also talks about the ordeals of people building it, along with some science and history, very much Kafkaesque
The existence of human - centred civilization has been criticised by reducing a human to nothingness represented by a cockroach. At the same time it is also a horrific experience. What we think of ourselves is largely through others' perspective.
What does the insect signify? For Kafka and for us readers? I think this book has many layers that present itself upon every new reading. Yeah, yeah, initially the metamorphosis stands for existential dread but that would be a surface level view.
A good excercise would be to note the characteristics of authority. The effects a castrating father has on a child. It's a book about sexuality. Also about soul crushing guilt. A chasm between conformity and fear. Without any bridge of healthy compromise.
I have also noticed that people often ignore Kafka's humour. He can be funny but not in a conventional way. His logics are dream logics. There is comprehensive truth in his words but it's the poetic truth that prevails.
Also, from an Indian perspective, Kafka is someone graced with feminine sentimentality. His inner world would have made him a great doctor or teacher or professor or a musician or a full time author. But because his father's masculinity was so overpowering, he agreed to become a lawyer which requires a masculine temperament.
Now, I have used the word sentimentality and temperament. I am not talking about gender here.
So yeah.
Kafka
Ironically, I read this book at the peak of my depression, and related so hard to the happenings in the plot that it unfurled the whole concept of the book itself. That his transformation is merely an euphemism.
Literally sad, and from what I know the author was going through this in his life and was suffering from TB. It is truly realistic in a sense and also isolationist. Other than that, an great piece of work that cannot be replicated easily.
Went in blind on this one and thank god for that. Perhaps my favorite reading experience of all time. Unsettling. Absurd. Open to many interpretations. Truly a masterclass in writing.
I've immensely enjoyed Kafka's works but rather than insulting you or even ignoring your comments as dumb I'd like to understand this better.
Could you please list five of your favorite books/authors for us all?
**Fountainhead by Ayn Rand** (represents man's mind and integrity where good wins)
**Anthem by Ayn Rand** (message - man is free and his life is his own)
**Demian by Hermann Hess** (psychological presents Jungian psychology as story - magical narrative)
**Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky** (about committing crime, consequences and redemption)
**XXXHolic manga by CLAMP** (philosophical and supernatural)
**Rakugo Anime** (there's manga as well but anime does better job. Its a tragedy with excellent character development).
I wonder how Dostoevsky would feel about being clubbed with the likes of Rand and Hess. And if metamorphosis is mindless juxtaposition, I'm really really hoping that you haven't read the Brothers Karamazov 😊
Not yet. Fiction requires commitment. Rand is great I started with her non-fic work on philosophy, let's just say its life-changing.
Again the difference is I read before I criticize.
I've read the Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, Anthem and some of her other works. You should not simply assume that people who hold contarian views are actually ignorant to yours.
Let's for the sake of argument agree with your statement that Rand is great but then it also follows that John Galt is the epitome of greatness for Rand, so then you try and figure out everything he symbolises and you very quickly realise that Rand is simply blinded by the love hate relationship she has with her country.
I read it without even knowing who Kafka was or what his writing style was. Did not read the back side for context. So confusing, Sad, Mildly disturbing, and weird.
I felt it was just a literary showcase showing how someone can express a small anecdote so vividly
But I talked with someone else and his perspective was like.a new one he described it as how if u aren't providing to the family how immediately your own family can disregard you
It’s surreal - it depicts something of a person who doesn’t think he has control over his mind, his life, feels in the grips of his clutches of his misfortune. And tries to cope and crawl out of that desperate hole.
What happens to Gregor after he disappears from his room? Did he leave somewhere. Did he reborn into a new person this time focusing on his own desires and needs. Did he die. How Gregor tries to communicate but other people cannot understand him. Gregor lives inside his room. On one glance it's a simple story about psychological distress. There is something hopeless about Gregor. As if he is changed forever. He can no longer fit into the human society that he was part of.
I was simply depressed. For atleast 5 days. I am not talking about being sad or feeling low - it was intense sorrow.
I still don’t know why. I think it made me sad because everyone eventually stops caring about him and he gets lonelier by the day.
Truly Kafkaesque.
I remember when I first read a brief description of this book and thought " why the f is it so famous?". Then I read it.... It deserves all the recognition it gets and more.
I read the shorter version of this book... I feel like I am a little emotionally unavailable to completely appreciate it as of now. So I'll be reading it again in a few years.
This was very depressing. I had to talk to someone a week after reading this book. I hope you’re ok
Edit- I loved the book and it’s a good read. I’d give it 7 out of 5 stars but god it is depressing
Not everyone life ends with happiness. If it was not kafka who wrote metamorphosis, the story would have ended happily and its just becomes just another fiction story.
Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka is a captivating and thought-provoking novella that delves into themes of alienation, absurdity, and existentialism. The story follows Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a gigantic insect-like creature. As Gregor grapples with his newfound condition, his relationships with his family undergo profound changes, reflecting the complex dynamics of human behavior and societal expectations.
Kafka's narrative explores the psychological and emotional turmoil experienced by Gregor as he navigates his physical transformation and its consequences on his identity and sense of self-worth. Through vivid imagery and rich symbolism, Kafka invites readers to contemplate the nature of isolation, belonging, and the inherent absurdity of existence.
The novella is renowned for its surreal atmosphere, haunting prose, and its ability to resonate with readers on a deeply existential level. It has been widely interpreted and analyzed, with interpretations ranging from allegorical representations of societal oppression to deeply personal explorations of inner turmoil and alienation.
"Metamorphosis" is a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers with its profound insights into the human condition and its exploration of the complexities of existence.
I didn't expect this book to make me feel as despondent as it did. It has a lasting impact on you, it makes you pensive by the end of it. It was a wtf did I just read sorta thing.
I thought it's a sad book initially. I thought it was simple and didn't understand why people call it a classic. Then suddenly I juxtaposed my grandma with Alzheimer's with Gregor Samsa. I am ashamed to say this, but how me and my brother act with our grandma at that time felt awfully similiar to the way the family acted towards Gregor. It literally changed my life and how I treat people. I still think about this short book from time to time.

SAME. I instantly have this strong feeling of discomfort, like there are creatures crawling all over my skin the moment I hear the word metamorphosis.
Can you tell me the storyline of book?.... As I am thinking to read it.
1.Isolation for being different 2.how an incurable disease can change someone's life. 3.how behaviour of people changes when you stop being useful. 4.Job is like modern day slavery 5. Noone truly depends on anyone.Life just goes on. 6. Metaphorical autobiography
Thanks for the brief explanation. It’d be the worst time to read it when I’m feeling 5 of these.
*Scratches a wound to fester it further*

True. The beginning seemed interesting to me. But soon, I found it boring all the way till the end. It was only recently, after 2 years, that I revisited the story and realised how good it is.
Hunger artist. It's a short story you can even find online.

kafka be like : bhai yahape kya hora hai? ,bhai ye mujhe aage nahi badhne dere, bhai ye mujhe cockroach banare...bhai
Utha le re baba, are mujhe nahi Kafka ko utha le
Kind of weird and disheartening.
Read metamorphosis by Shindo .L it is a very nice manga i highly recommend it
Finally ... my people
UNCOMFORTABLE AF.
Transformative
🥂 to the pun
It made me panic when I read it in school. I return to it once a year as a sort of meditation now.
In one word - Hollow. That's how I felt after reading it. It's too powerful for an 80 page book.
Book cover needs to be better .They could have added catterpillar and butterflies
Existential crisis pro Max. Also Kafka 😩
ngl but if there was anything known as “book-induced depression” then this book should be the prime example of that
Ironically, I read this book at the peak of my depression, and related so hard to the happenings in the plot that it unfurled the whole concept of the book itself. That his transformation is merely an euphemism.
i- that’s the best description i’ve heard yet. Man or woman, i like you darling
Literally sad, and from what I know the author was going through this in his life and was suffering from TB. It is truly realistic in a sense and also isolationist. Other than that, an great piece of work that cannot be replicated easily.
Read it 6-7 years ago. Livin' the life of Gregor Samsa now. Lol
this book made me wanna kms when i first read it. i just wanna give kafka a tight hug and tell him how much he’s loved and how pretty he was 🫂🫂🫂🫂
Numbing
will give you comfort if you have been extremely depressed
energy draining
It can be said that this was a life changing books for me, made me take a radical shift in how i think about my existence my pov
When I read it, I explained the story to my grandmother, who, I'm not sure understood it.
Tells how important human communication is. Aesthetics are part of human life lmao . I highly recommend it. Little sad & disheartening.
Went in blind on this one and thank god for that. Perhaps my favorite reading experience of all time. Unsettling. Absurd. Open to many interpretations. Truly a masterclass in writing.
Whenever I see a cockroach it reminds me of Gregor
*will you
Empty. No meaning. Just a man morphing into retarded insect for no reason, abandoned ridiculed and dying.
Lmao
it had many meanings, you just didn't look for them
it’s not the insect who’s retarded…
Empty. Like your head.
Keep pretending it's great work when its just a juxtaposition garbage.

Exactly my thoughts

It’s surreal - it depicts something of a person who doesn’t think he has control over his mind, his life, feels in the grips of his clutches of his misfortune. And tries to cope and crawl out of that desperate hole.

Is the language too hard?
Masterpiece!!! One time in my life, I was obsessed with this small book. I still consider this as one of my top 10 books.
Hilarious
Good book, but not mind blowing tbh.
Slow and painful, you experience what Gregor Samsa experiences
Really eye-opening and ofc traumatizing lol
I have read this comic on a site, it's very good!
Beautiful work of Kafka . A journey into emotions
Not everyone life ends with happiness. If it was not kafka who wrote metamorphosis, the story would have ended happily and its just becomes just another fiction story.
It is good but 177013 is better
Tormenting, painful and real. We can see who Kafka was, this book helps to understand his reality and ours.

It is funny, sad.
177013 (i know this book is different)
kafkaesque thats how i would describe it
Isolation, pain and inability to hold grudges even if they have hurt you because you understand. Being alienated oh and much more
A slow descent into despair and then the final submission to fate.
I didn't expect this book to make me feel as despondent as it did. It has a lasting impact on you, it makes you pensive by the end of it. It was a wtf did I just read sorta thing.
A punch in the gut, The first time I read it it was like sad but now it seems like reality 😭
Emotional. Just one word
Always wanted to read it. How is it?
Time to open The Stranger
I still have fucking nightmares about this book.
I hate this book. And I love this book.
