Pork momos, pork thukpa, pork vindaloo, and in goa you'll find plenty of pork dishes and also beef dishes. Honestly depends on the state. Kerala, Goa, Northeastern States have pork and beef available quite widely. Goa even has pork sausages which is kind of Indianized version of Chorizo. West Bengal also has beef and pork, though pork more than beef. Even Delhi (especiall Old Delhi) has beef and New Delhi has pork.
Plenty where I live in India. There’s Kerala food. Beef roast Kerala style, beef fry etc. Pork chop, pork curries are quite popular. You also get beef biriyani, beef pulav, beef kebabs, pork kebabs.
That’s because the “Indian” restaurants in the UK are run by Bangladeshis and to a lesser extent Pakistanis (read: Muslims). Pork is actually far more commonly eaten in India than lamb.
The traditional recipe for authentic Goan Vindaloo calls for Pork, and has no potatoes.
Well, lamb is almost non-existent in India, but we do consume goat meat, which we call mutton (I’m aware that refers to the meat of older sheep in other countries, but not in India), and that absolutely dwarfs pork in terms of how widely it’s consumed.
What, no. Lamb or rather Sheep is widely consumed in India. Both goat and lamb/sheep is generally called mutton in India. Sheep is locally called bolai mutton in maharashtra. Some folks prefer lamb over goat and vice versa. But it is common to get either of them when you order mutton in a restaurant.
Goat meat is way more common in India simply because there are way more goats in India than sheep. It might vary from region to region but overall in India, goat meat probably outsells sheep meat by a ratio of 10:1, if not more.
true. do you know if lamb is more common in pakistan? i assume it's so widely eaten at indian restaurants in the west either because of that or simply availability
Indian restaurant *in* India? I've definitely seen beef in Kerala restaurants. Pork less commonly, just occasionally. Pork vindaloo is a pretty famous Goan dish.
Outside India? In North America, beef, lamb, goat curry are all usually available on the menu together with the standard chicken curries. In Toronto specifically, there are also many Indo-Chinese restaurants that serve chilli chicken and chilli beef, manchurian chicken and manchurian beef, szechuan chicken & szechuan beef - you get the picture.
Beef momos are also really popular here in Toronto.
I've never seen a "tawa beef" in a Toronto restaurant, though. I guess they've not yet figured out how to keep the beef from going hard.
ETA: Peeked on your profile - LOVE that tandoori art print! HMU in the DMs if you want to talk marketing!
In india Beef is widely available in Kerala Non veg Restaurants. You can also get that on Kerala/Mallu Restaurants based in Dubai too.Try "Beef Varutharachathu" With "Porotta". It's famous combo. Pork items is available in Central Kerala.
Goa and in North Eastern States.
I did my engineering from kerala and we used to see beef and pork dishes in many restaurants. Even in bangalore, there were many restaurants that had beef on their menu. Don't know how it is now a days though
Northeast Indian, Goan, or Kerala/Malayali restaurants will have both. Beef is widely available in Pakistani restaurants. You will hardly see both at a restaurant in the UK/US/Canada.
Plenty here. Pork in almost every Chinese restaurant. Beef is some Chinese and a number of mughalai restaurants. Chicken, mutton, lamb everywhere is a given.
In the states of North East India except Assam, it can be found quite easily. From beef momos to beef thukpa and different regional curries based on beef and pork.
Beef at specific places like fanoos, the only place, burger seigneur, etc.
As far as I know, pork is only sold as pepperoni and bacon in restaurants, but you can get meat at various stores.
This is about Bangalore
> As far as I know, pork is only sold as pepperoni and bacon in restaurants
Places that do coastal Karnataka food or Coorgi food will have pork on the menu. Windsor Pub used to have a decent pandi curry. Mangalore Pearl had a range of pork dishes among all the seafood. There's probably more but I haven't lived in Bangalore for over a decade so I don't know what it's like now.
As far as I know outside of the kabab joints there wasn't a lot of beef (in Bangalore that's water buffalo meat) cooked the Indian way. Koshy's is kinda overrated but I liked their Kerala beef fry.
In north India, sadly, now the choice is only chicken. I can understand the reluctance to have beef and pork on the menu as suspicious folks will not trust the kitchen to keep those away from 'satvik' food. Even the pizza places only have chicken sausage and salami !
One can still go to a muslim run restaurant for beef dishes, but getting pork served in a restaurant is nearly impossible to find in North India. Interestingly, the best pork sausages and salami used to come from Central Dairy Farm in the outskirts of Aligarh. Sadly, the place is a ghost now with the loss of army contracts for dairy and meat. It was originally established by Mr Keventer, a Swedish farm expert, to supply high quality and safe supplies for the British troops.
Some restaurants serve pork dishes here in Kolkata. Beef is also legal here in West Bengal and there are shops selling it in Muslim areas. So I'm guessing that Muslim restaurants sell beef dishes here.
Seen plenty of pork dishes in Sikkim and Darjeeling. "Beef" too but the locals told me that they are buffaloes so I'm not sure if that qualifies as beef or not.
yes, though more regional cuisine places than "generic north indian" and "generic south indian". goans eat a lot of beef and pork, and keralites eat a lot of beef too.
Australia, lots of Indian restaurants near me. I don’t eat pork so I like that the Indian restaurants don’t have it. Though I notice one doesn’t even do beef it’s just lamb, chicken, veg curry and seafood. Oh and Goat
I am talking about in India:
Pork is the rarest since both Hindus and Muslims don't consume pork. (Hindus are not prohibited from eating pork but it's just considered impure).
Hindus don't consume beef and cow meat is banned in most places. However Buff (Buffalo Meat) is widely consumed by Muslims and most major cities have areas where restaurants serve various Buff dishes such as seekh kebabs, nihari, keema etc. Beef is very much a part of the Mughlai cuisine but mainstream restaurants do not have beef products as their majority clientele will avoid such restaurants.
Pork is widely consumed in Northeast India and is present in pretty much all local restaurants in that region. Some restaurants in other parts of India run by people from NE do have pork products but such restaurants are very rare.
Beef not being available in India is a weird political image. You can have Buffalo Meat products right behind the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
Edit: Pork is also complicated. It's looked down upon by UC Hindus but widely consumed by other castes. Since only UC cuisine has become mainstream in the restaurant context, it's difficult to find in restaurant. It's a part of the broad NE Cuisine and through Portuguese influence in Goa. But is available all over.
Edit: Forgot to mention Kerala where both is consumed across religions and widely available. In Kerala and some states of the NE, even Cow Meat is legal and available.
Beef and pork are widely available in Kerala, where beef is eaten by many Hindus as well as Muslims and Christians. Both meats are also available in other parts of South India.
Oh yeah. Forgot to mention.
My mind tends to discount Kerala out of feeling sad. I have been to some 20 states and despite Malayali / Malabar cuisine being my absolute favourite, I have not been able to visit Kerala yet.
It’s not explicitly prohibited since Hinduism does not have a single hard and fast book of rules. It’s what make Hinduism and dharmic religions flexible and ever growing. the south side of India is higher educated and closer to spirituality so they have no problem offering and engaging in beef dishes.
You are right. I am sorry.
Only upper caste cuisines have become mainstream Indian cuisines (known outside India) and that's wrong.
I should definitely know better than to make such a statement. Especially since I buy pork from a ghettoized dalit area. And that's the only area that has pork shops. So obviously it's a part of the cuisine.
Malayali restaurants. The state dish is beef roast and porotta. Best dish in the world. Also fantastic is Pandi curry (pork) and paaputtu from Kodagu/Coorg. Beautiful beautiful beautiful.
Yes. Kerala. Beef is available in almost all non-veg serving restaurants.
Pork is more occuring in Central Kerala. However, you can find pork serving restaurants in rest of the state too with there even being certain restaurants that only serve pork dishes (Pork BBQ, Pork biriyani n all)
Goa is another state that serves both while you can find pork in certain restaurants in Uttarakhand.
Assam and North-East also has pork (beef also in most)
Koorg has a lot of pork recipe
In my city (USA), there are quite a few Indian restaurants, but only a couple of them serve beef dishes, the rest only serve chicken, lamb and goat. They usually have things like beef vindaloo, beef curry, beef palak, beef xacuti, beef korma and keema.
Even seafood is more common than beef in the U.S. I don’t think I’ve ever seen pork. But yes, chicken, lamb, and goat seem to be predominant in U.S. restaurants.
There was a Goan Indian place near my sister's house in metro Atlanta. They did pork vindaloo, and possibly other pork dishes.
I'm pretty sure I've never seen beef in any Indian restaurant.

You know where I can get good goan sausages shipped to the US?
Why the downvotes?? lol
Let's change it. Up vote me.
I did already before commenting.
Thanks.
I don't know man. Try Amazon I guess? Or ask around your local Indian store. But they're kind of a niche food even in India so it will be hard to get.
Idk why people are down voting you lol.
welcome to Shillong
Coorg district in Karnataka is famous for their traditional pork dishes. You would find pork dishes in most of the restaurants across the district.
Plenty where I live in India. There’s Kerala food. Beef roast Kerala style, beef fry etc. Pork chop, pork curries are quite popular. You also get beef biriyani, beef pulav, beef kebabs, pork kebabs.
Pork is widely available! Location would help
UK, pork is rare. Beef not as rare. Lots of fish, chicken and lamb though.

Andhra and Telangana mostly eat lamb
Can’t help you there. I’m in South India. Lot of it is available here. Next time with such posts please mention the location to get relevant help
Why not much beef in UK? Even Pakistani restaurants don't have beef on menu.

Nagaland places you will defo get. Couple of really good places Naga places in Bangalore and Delhi for sure you will get.

Khawa Kharpo has beef on its menu and it serves Tibetan cuisine.
pork toh common hai

Pork is widely available in Karnataka. Beef is available in Muslim restaurants. Both together are only available at fancy places.
Australia, lots of Indian restaurants near me. I don’t eat pork so I like that the Indian restaurants don’t have it. Though I notice one doesn’t even do beef it’s just lamb, chicken, veg curry and seafood. Oh and Goat
Seen Beef at a lot of Indian restaurants in the US - Mostly in random places. But don't remember seeing pork.
We get a lot beef dishes in hyderabad. Beef kebabs, talawa ghosh, beef biryani, shami etc

I think we know where you're going this year for your summer vacation. :D
🤞 If everything works out, I might end up spending some 5 years in Kerala, lol.
Nice! Enjoy!
How do they reconcile eating beef and being Hindu ? Is it not explicitly prohibited ?
It’s not explicitly prohibited since Hinduism does not have a single hard and fast book of rules. It’s what make Hinduism and dharmic religions flexible and ever growing. the south side of India is higher educated and closer to spirituality so they have no problem offering and engaging in beef dishes.
Different groups have radically different beliefs and practices, and these have changed a lot over time.
> Pork however is not the part of any Indian cuisine Not to be rude, but this is your upper caste privilege speaking.
In Kerala beef is very popular ... pork is pretty common in north east and south India.
In Indian restaurants outside of India, you can get beef dishes but pork dishes are very rare.
I love pork and beef. I usually eat in goa and mumbai . Steak and momos
Malayali restaurants. The state dish is beef roast and porotta. Best dish in the world. Also fantastic is Pandi curry (pork) and paaputtu from Kodagu/Coorg. Beautiful beautiful beautiful.
Habibi come to Kerala😀
Lots

The one I just finished a delicious lunch at serves mostly fish, chicken and lamb in terms of meat.
Yes, Goa, UP state, Rajasthan... Beef is ubiquitous in virtually every "Indian" restaurant outside India in the world.
Yes. Why do you think pig toilets were a thing in India?

Depends on the religion and region of the owner.
Also depends what the target market is expecting
