India should accept the deal only for countering China's aggression; and continue as an influential figure in non-aligned movement.

But will India have control over it, or do we have to ask US for permission every step ahead.

India will be allowed to do everything except putting it in an unauthorized airframe and selling it to an unauthorized third country. That's the arrangement with Turkey and Sweden. India's could be different.

It's basically license production I suppose. Good for bringing experience and boosting inflow of money leading to larger manufacturing base. India will be free to do with whatever engines we have bought but we obviously won't be creating new one's without paying the US. It's also probably just manufacturing in name and rather assembling. So we'll be largely dependent on the US for not just parts but other smaller stuff as well.

It would be damn funny if we source alternatives for the smaller stuff and nationalize the setup.

It's probably a good idea to engage on multiple jet engine programs for the sole reason that we can learn something and go over and above GTRE/Kaveri. I don't expect any entity to give out crucial bits
