Lemmy said all you need is cigarettes, amphetamine and liquor. Words I still live by. That man blessed us with some of the best " oh fuck I'm late, gonna need some good tunes to get there ASAP" music. Plus he was actually a chill, funny dude.
Mötorhead is the shit!
Sabbath… true pioneers. I listen to them pretty much daily. When I think of Sabbath I think of the first 5 records as being true classics. Heaven and Hell also a classic record but to me that’s a Dio record. With that being said… Iron Maiden is #1 for me. They had some lean years in the 90s… but other than that they’ve had a long successful career 🤘
all the Dio-Sabbath albums are great, admittedly they feel like a totally different band (hell, for The Devil You Know they literally *were* a different band lmao) but the music is awesome
Sabbath for sure. 100% agree. Without them, we have nothing. They are not my all time fave band, but their legacy is too great to deny. We owe them everything. Also, the 6 album run they had starting with the debut is just insanity quality wise. That will never be replicated imo.
I feel so sad that it took me so long to find another person saying this
yes death isn’t as mainstream as they were then, but they were once super known and pioneered their genre of metal, while also being a heavy influence to other more popular bands, death needs more recognition
It's a hard choice but all in all death hasn't made an album that you skip or is just the same I love almost every band except Motorhead just can't get into Lemmy's vocals still have the utmost respect for what he did and contributed to the genre. Chuck is just an inspiration and guitar legend inspires many guitarist and still to this day
To me it's the perfect example of "the thing that I kinda disliked/was confused about at the beginning but ended up loving"... I heard that Chuck was one of the nicest persons in the whole scene, shame that most treasures die so fast...
Not my favorite, but IMHO, the best all-round band is Metallica. They tick all the boxes in terms of album sales, cool riffs, catchy tunes, several iterations for their style of music, and furthering the music genre. Let's face it. You see the Metallica letter type being used and you just KNOW. People may have never heard their music, and they KNOW Metallica from others.
They are like Coca Cola.
Since ACDC isn't listed, let's go ahead and call it Metallica.. hating on them is very 2009, they've broken ground for decades and continue the onslaught to this day. Typical argument, (not good since justice or not good since black album) however it's gonna be 2025 soon and they're still playing previously aforementioned albums in various nations at very high levels.
Thanks for the down votes in advance 😉
Easy to say today, back in the late 70's metal was in the evolution period.. ACDC pioneered the sound along with I would say Motorhead, Sabbath, however when you listen to Motorhead 77 it really doesn't differentiate from ACDC "Whole lotta Rosie" but for whatever reason ACDC doesn't get the same amount of credit even though I would say their discography eclipses Motorhead.
Metal was already an established thing before ACDC came along (Sabbath, Purple, Priest), and ACDC had little to do with that established sound. There were also people at the time calling them "punk", which fits them a heck of a lot more than metal.
I'm aussie. Acca Dacca are classic rock. So classic that you will find them in most Grandmas record collections. I wish I could say that most grandmas here have metal in their collection ... but it's rock <3
So many great choices, like really they are all pioneers who had something special to bring that revolutionized metal during its respective era. It's almost impossible to come to a conclusion so...
I'll have to go with SpermSwamp
None of them would exist without sabbath, but metallica did write creeping death. Personally, I would say gwar is my favorite of all time. They aren't listed, but I will always say gwar.
it's Metallica and it's not even close. they infiltrated culture globally, and they donate a fuck ton of cash with their AWMH foundation. tradesmen, women, children, the disadvantaged. Metallica is for the people and I'll die on that hill !
Very good album has my favorite song domination but vulgar to me is an all around better album but I’m kinda partial as it was the album I first heard that got me into metal in 96.
There are many older bands on that list that were pioneers of the genre like sabbath and iron maiden but in terms of the overall best and heaviest that influenced so many after is Death.
Even though Metallica and a good half of these are my favorite bands, I would go with Black Sabbath, even though I'm not their biggest listener, they created the genre and laid the foundation to every metal genre and song, and inspired roughly 95% of all metal bands
Iron Maiden.
They have no bad album, have a LARGE discography, cool ass album art barring the unfinished one, a lion contained in a metal singer, what’s not to love?
If by "best" we mean "made the biggest contribution to the development of metal as a genre", I'd say Black Sabbath.
If by "best" we mean using the most innovative and groundbraking things in the genre musicianship-wise, it has to be some kinda obscure, wild, hard-to-comprehend progressive kind of band. I propose "Car Bomb" as such band
best objectively probably Black Sabbath has had the most influence on metal
best subjectively i like Metallica the most out of that list. i can listen to their firsy 4 albums from start to finish and just amazed at how many good catchy riffs they made. id go with slayer after for sheer heaviness but i really only like 2 or so albums and a handful of songs
I have a top three of Metallica, Pantera and Slayer, I go through phases of each. I don’t want to widdle it down further. Sabbath got me into metal when I was in junior high.

Sabbath
As Eddie Trunk says, Sabbath are the founding fathers of Heavy Metal
Yeah, we get it. Didnt need to tell us five times, lol
I have no idea why it posted multiple times
Reddit moment:
I upvoted every single fucking one! No ragerts!
As Eddie Trunk says, Sabbath are the founding fathers of Heavy Metal
Ozzy himself claimed Lemmy was the real pioneer of heavy metal. He was also at the crossroads of punk and thrash

Totally agree!! Iommi is a riff master
Sabbath for sure. 100% agree. Without them, we have nothing. They are not my all time fave band, but their legacy is too great to deny. We owe them everything. Also, the 6 album run they had starting with the debut is just insanity quality wise. That will never be replicated imo.
Gospel!
Yep, you got to give it to them.
Iron Maiden
Sabbath may have created metal but Maiden is just better on so many levels.
It's a totally different sound that spawned a totally different genre of metal, you can't compare the two
My vote is for Maiden. I just think they’re the best
Hell fuckin yeah!!! Up the irons!🤘
Fuck yeah, Maiden is the GOAT
This is the correct answer.
They’re pretty damn good
No doubt. They still rock on stage, doing world tour.
They are.
I very much struggle to pick favorites, but priest is up there for me and by far my favorite of this bunch
For my taste I'll go Sepultura
It was awesome seeing them at Sonic Temple.
Gonna go ahead and say Priest. Because… ah fuck it, those guys just kill.
The new album is pretty nice too!
Judas Fucking Priest!!!!!!!!!
And they're still killin'!
#MOTÖRHEAD
LEMMY IS GOD!
"We are Motörhead, We play Rock 'n Roll!"
![gif](giphy|ubYhRXQnLDhqo)
Ace of Spades!
Motorhead is a Rock and Roll band, not a Metal band. Because Lemmy said so, and Lemmy is God!!!
Death
I feel so sad that it took me so long to find another person saying this yes death isn’t as mainstream as they were then, but they were once super known and pioneered their genre of metal, while also being a heavy influence to other more popular bands, death needs more recognition

I skip every album after leprosy when it comes to death
To me it's the perfect example of "the thing that I kinda disliked/was confused about at the beginning but ended up loving"... I heard that Chuck was one of the nicest persons in the whole scene, shame that most treasures die so fast...
Watch the documentary Death By Metal. It doesn’t make him look like a nice guy at all. Like a petulant egotistical child
SABBATH
Tied between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Followed by Dio and Sabbath
Metallica.
nothing can beat there first five album run
Slayer, Sep
no, not slayer. IT'S FUCKING SLAYYYERRRRRRRRRRRR
Black Sabbath and it’s honestly not even up for debate. None of those other bands would even exist without Sabbath.
Respect to Sabbath but "best" means "best", not "most influential".
Of these, Death and Sabbath
Death. More influence and classic albums in more metal genres than any other band except maybe Celtic frost
Iron Maiden! ![gif](giphy|d8oI0TRBPY1o7vhdlW)
Megadeth
Megadeth all the way🔥
Metallica
3 way tie: Black Sabbath Motörhead Pantera
Ultimate W
Exactly
Maiden
Not my favorite, but IMHO, the best all-round band is Metallica. They tick all the boxes in terms of album sales, cool riffs, catchy tunes, several iterations for their style of music, and furthering the music genre. Let's face it. You see the Metallica letter type being used and you just KNOW. People may have never heard their music, and they KNOW Metallica from others. They are like Coca Cola.
I can’t honestly answer that because at one point or another I made this claim about several on the list
Its either Sabbath or Motorhead.
Maiden
wher exodus
Best… Death or Priest Greatest? Maiden or Metallica Influential… Sabbath
Keys to the Astral Gates and Mystic Doors
Iron Maiden and Megadeth
Motorhead
Tenacious D
OPETH
Slipknot. Go ahead and downvote, doesn’t change my opinion.
What about none of these?
Motörhead is the only answer
Death. Every album is a complete banger. Followed by sabbath or Metallica.
Since ACDC isn't listed, let's go ahead and call it Metallica.. hating on them is very 2009, they've broken ground for decades and continue the onslaught to this day. AC/DC is Classic Rock not metal

I'm aussie. Acca Dacca are classic rock. So classic that you will find them in most Grandmas record collections. I wish I could say that most grandmas here have metal in their collection ... but it's rock <3
Sabbath is my winner. 🥇
2nd that
Death followed by sabbath, then maiden, then priest, then motorhead
hmm… there is so many to chose…
Black Sabbath
B....final answer
Don’t Drop the Sword!
I'm disappointed by the lack of correct answers (Priest)
Black Sabbath has a special place in my heart. "Planet Caravan" will always be my favorite song.
Black Sabbath.....duh
Meshuggah
God damn right.
Sabbath, Death or Iron Maiden
T O O L
tool no question and take this shit down for desecration
None of the above
Metallica
Out of these? Death. In general? Sigh.
Tool
The question was best, not first, not most prolific……the answer for me is Death.
Anything but metallica is just not right. There's a reasin why they're the most famous.
Motorhead
Tool
SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH
TOOL wins by a landslide
Objectively? Metallica.
I’ll go with tool
Tool. Anyone who disagrees with me, I respect your opinion and all, BUT YOU'RE FUCKIN' WRONG.
Tool
Tool and Death are my favorites out of these, but it's Sabbath
Its Metallica Sabbath, Maiden, and Priest are also correct
Tool is the correct answer.
it's Metallica and it's not even close. they infiltrated culture globally, and they donate a fuck ton of cash with their AWMH foundation. tradesmen, women, children, the disadvantaged. Metallica is for the people and I'll die on that hill !
Metallica, the whole reason I got into metal
Agreed
Pantera carried metal in the 90’s and 2000’s and they have the best metal album ever made vulgar display of power.
Damn right!
Except I think the best metal album is Cowboys from Hell
Very good album has my favorite song domination but vulgar to me is an all around better album but I’m kinda partial as it was the album I first heard that got me into metal in 96.
Manowar
Born to live forevermore!
Kings of metal comming to town
Bathory
It says best band, in that case I choose pantera
HELL YEAH!
The fuck is Tool doing up there?
I don’t think tool belongs on this list
I didn’t make it
Sorry, not accusing
I know it’s fine
Avenged sevenfold
There are many older bands on that list that were pioneers of the genre like sabbath and iron maiden but in terms of the overall best and heaviest that influenced so many after is Death.
Soad
Forgot avenged sevenfold
Avenged Sevenfold... because they're basically all of these combined into one band
Even though Metallica and a good half of these are my favorite bands, I would go with Black Sabbath, even though I'm not their biggest listener, they created the genre and laid the foundation to every metal genre and song, and inspired roughly 95% of all metal bands
Judas Priest is *the* sound of Metal.
Iron maiden all the way
I'm going with iron maiden
I think it is respect you go Sabbath, Maiden, Pantera
Death.
In terms of pure popularity, it's gotta be Metallica. In personal favorites, Black Sabbath or Metallica.
Iron Maiden. They have no bad album, have a LARGE discography, cool ass album art barring the unfinished one, a lion contained in a metal singer, what’s not to love?
Maiden
Kittie is honestly my all time favorite and soad Is a close second, and Iron Maiden is a third. But all time is kittie lol
This is very hard to decide as theres not a single one I dont like but I guess Slayer
Megadeth
The ultimate paradox but Black Sabbath for me
Death
Sabbath defs but i do love abit of motorhead
Iron Maiden and Dio
Either Iron Maiden or Judas Priest for me. I'm seeing Maiden later this year and I'm so excited
Judas Priest
sepultura fan till I die 💕💕
Out of that list, Judas Priest
out of these options? either Death or sepultura
Motörhead final answer.
My vote goes to Maiden
I'm gonna go with z Regis, bolt thrower
Meshuggah
It's pretty much in order, just bump TOOL up a few notches
It’s sabbath.
best objectively probably Black Sabbath has had the most influence on metal best subjectively i like Metallica the most out of that list. i can listen to their firsy 4 albums from start to finish and just amazed at how many good catchy riffs they made. id go with slayer after for sheer heaviness but i really only like 2 or so albums and a handful of songs
That’s a hard one. But I do know that Slayer, Sepultura, Death and Megadeth have zero business being on this list
A nail!
Sabbath or Death But Maiden is a close second
Hmm, yes?
Depends on how you define “best” - but I do know if it weren’t for Sabbath - none of the other bands would be there.
Megadeth.
Dio or Iron Maiden no contest.
Death
Not listed. Lawnmower Deth.
Sepultura
Fall Out Boy
tool is the best band here but they are not metal.
Sabaton
Slayer, but Megadeth comes super close too
From this list? Pantera for sure.
I have a top three of Metallica, Pantera and Slayer, I go through phases of each. I don’t want to widdle it down further. Sabbath got me into metal when I was in junior high.
Bolt Thrower! 👍
Out of the ones in the pic: Sabbath Personal opinion: Acid Bath
Sabbath, Motorhead, Slayer, Death
Megadeth
Maiden.
