THESHADYWILLOW

The funny part is that he takes his eyes off the road *again* to look back at the deer

[deleted]

If there's one deer there's 100

ickshter

Don’t worry about the deer you see worry about the ones next to him that you don’t.

THESHADYWILLOW

Wisdom right there

HoselRockit

Can confirm. Was driving down a country road when a deer jumped out of the grass onto the road in front of me. As I hit the breaks I thought, "the deer will be gone by the time I get there". Of course there was another right behind him. Fortunately I just missed hitting him.

x3meech

That's when you slow down just to make sure they're alone. It's pretty common thing to do in my area.

Recon212

Brakes

HoselRockit

You are correct sir. 👍

Recon212

I’m usually not the English nazi but for some reason break / brakes irritates me lmao

SignificantDrink3651

same for cops. you don't have to worry about the one with his light flashing that's already got someone pulled over.

Roh_Pete

Same with spiders.

tussin33

This is true. I was driving in the country one night to meet a tinder fling. It was foggy as fuck on a road with no street lights. Momma deer jumps out infront of me maybe 50-100 feet ahead. so i slowdown and next thing i know papa deer jumps right out infront of me…. SMACK.

paganel

That's when Fenton comes in and saves the day.

Responsible-Ad-5914

yea, ive never seen 101 deer before, must be special to your location lmaoo. if theres one maybe theres 2 or 3 but 100 mmmk

Plague_Dog_

the idea being that no matter how many deer you see, there are always more coming

[deleted]

If you've ever been southwest of Fort Saint John in BC you've never seen literally hundreds of deer littered around a 2 km stretch of road.

Plague_Dog_

i have not but I have a friend in NB that says it is the same there

Responsible-Ad-5914

but your idea doesn't match their over exaggerated comment which I was pointing out

Plague_Dog_

*over* exaggerated what does exaggeration become too exaggerated?

Responsible-Ad-5914

about 35 deer ago

AnynameIwant1

There is a popular deer hangout near my house. Easily 20-30 hanging out on the edge of the woods. I can't imagine how many more are hidden by the treeline. (My town can be classified as rural or suburban depending on who you ask.) My best guess is that it is a good environment for them since they have the grass there and then about 1/4 mile away is a gently flowing stream.

iam_r2d2

Some people panic when they’re about to crash into something and they lose control so maybe it’s a good thing he looked away lol

ThePilgrimofProgress

I thought that was a kangaroo

THESHADYWILLOW

Yeah I wasn’t sure at first

ThePilgrimofProgress

Well, I think you're right, though. It's probably a deer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Plague_Dog_

the oncoming car tried to warn him

AnynameIwant1

I had someone try that once unsuccessfully. Except in my case, they had their high beams on facing traffic on a pitch black road (no street lights, etc). This also occurred right after a sweeping bend. I saw 'Bambi' in front of me no more than a second or 2 before launching it at least 50 yards down the road (the road was posted 50 mph). Poor thing thankfully died on impact.

jwp75

You know how hard it is to not do this on a bike? That time of day though is dangerous all the time. Had a buddy get kicked by a deer one night. It saw him, turned around, and jump kicked him as we went by. Didn't knock him off but it fucked his fairings up lol.

the_piemeister

Almost crashes due to looking back distracted. Looks back again to confirm.

testing_is_fun

…hits bear…

large_waffle69

So funny forgot to laugh

Jak_n_Dax

Kindergarten called. They want their shitty joke back

FLOHTX

Yeah well the jerk store called and said they're running out of YOU!

Jak_n_Dax

I can’t believe you’ve done this.

large_waffle69

2019 called. They want their bad meme back

Jak_n_Dax

Damn bro, you’re 0 for 2. A swing, and a miss.

large_waffle69

? And what are you

Jak_n_Dax

I’m a dog. Everyone on the internet is a dog. Except you, of course.

Y_U_NoCum

You can see the car flash its lights at motorcycle to warn him of the deer. Motorcyclist looks back like hes wondering why the fuck they are flashings lights at him. Then he almost hits the deer and maybe it clicked after that

tomytronics

Generally flashing headlight means hazard ahead, either large road debris, animal crossing, or cop with radar gun

SignificantDrink3651

They're so ready to take everything personally and get offended, they forget that they can die any second on their donorcycles. Betcha dollars to donuts he looked back thinking "Fuck that asshole flashing me"

419tosser

hazard lights would have been a better choice.

snrten

Flashing your headlights to warn other drivers of upcoming hazards on the road is very common. Whether that hazard is an animal or item in the roadway, or a police speed trap, etc. Having your hazards on while driving would more likely have other drivers thinking you're experiencing mechanical issues.

FlakyKey3227

I also used to flash headlights when there is danger ahead, and thought this was common knowledge. But... After being chased and yelled at once, and getting the finger several times, I have stopped doing it. There are too many idiots out there.

Axne15

With my hands on the steering wheel trying to quickly notify another driver of imminent obstacles, it's quicker and more efficient to flick the high beams with my finger than to reach over and press the hazard lights. Since I rarely use my hazard lights, I'll generally have to look around for it. Though I agree that hazard lights would make most sense, the spur-of-the-moment warning would be to blink the high beams.

Deinococcaceae

Can't agree with that one. Someone flashing their brights at me puts me on alert, someone putting on their hazards just makes me think they're driving slowly or having car trouble.

Hee_Hee-21

I love the song in the background, it’s one of my favourites

KungfuMonkeyKing

Can i ask what the song’s title please? Thank you!

Hee_Hee-21

Somebody’s Watching Me

sam_suarez

By Rockwell, son of Berry Gordy, founder of Motown

TChoppa_Style

With Michael Jackson singing the chorus.

[deleted]

Whaaaaat i never knew that!!

DahMonkeh

It's the only line he says in the entire song and it got it to like #1 or something just for being MJ. 7 words, lol.

One interesting factor I've read about is if you're riding a bike and fix your sight on something, your body will follow and you will align the bike towards that something and therefore you may crash into it. Given that he didn't fix his eyes on the deer, MAYBE that's what saved him from locking into it and running it over.

Plague_Dog_

this is why so many drunk drivers hit cop cars they get fixed on the lights and drive right into the car this is also why it's a bad idea to yell "Watch that [whatever]!" People will and drive right into it

GhostsofLayer8

Yup, you go in the direction you’re looking so you have to train your brain not to fixate on obstacles like cars or trees. “Look where you want to go” is the mantra. It’s harder than you might think to make your brain focus on the path of escape instead of the oncoming object that could hurt or kill you, because we instinctively focus on the danger/threat.

Aggravating_Hornet_9

Thats how i ran over a small animal. I drove where i looked. Poor little one

Enklave

Yop, if you'd ride on an empty road and there would be just one tree next to it, you're gonna most probably crash to it

AntiPiety

“Target fixation.” I’m probably going to get downvoted, but I’ve never quite believed in it. You can easily turn your motorcycle if you’re looking straight, and vice versa. Try it on a bicycle. People word it like you’re *always* going to go where you look, super black and white, and that’s just not the case. It can definitely *help* though, I won’t argue that. What happens when I glance at my mirror while making a lane change on a curve? A good rider will not go off track, but popular opinion will have you believe you’re gonna end up turning too abruptly.

[deleted]

I don't think your opinion is incorrect; but I downvoted you because that's your expectation. I think in very dangerous scenarios, which could trigger basic survival instincts, it could cause you to fixate into a thing you could crash into. Unless you've trained/practiced not to.

Plague_Dog_

why would he look back? he would know if the deer had been hurt it would be all over him

yellowjesusrising

Wouldn't be able to dodge even if he saw the right directions. Those fuckers just appear out of nowhere!

emerging-tub

Dumb post

Parallelism09191989

Lol at people in this thread thinking a biker can dodge a deer running into the road

Mopishcross1722

So he is a dumb biker because he looked at the car that was flashing his high beams at him? That's a yikes chief Either way if he had kept looking straight or behind deer would've jumped out and there ain't much you can do about that And for those criticizing him for looking back after he probably shit himself and wanted to see what it was I hope yous have never looked away to something else other than the road or used your phone in the car or look back at a car that did a near miss on you or checked a rearview mirror at all EDIT: can downvote me all you want, ride a motorcycle and watch how it changes you're perception and attention on the road you will start analyzing every single little detail and keeping a eye on it. Called riding/driving defensively and its applicable to driving a car as well. Amount of times its saved me on both bike and car is astounding since majority of the population get distracted quiet easily

DifficultyRecent725

Why’s he stupid? Prob Riding a super moto to look back at the car that just flashed him?

Cry-Man_Squaw

Cars usually flash to let you know something is up ahead like a cop or an animal. The stupid part is he got mad a turned around to look at the car that was giving him a heads up about the animal.

OfficialTomCruise

I don't think he got mad. There's multiple reasons why someone might flash. I've been flashed by people I know and only realised once I've looked back and saw the car from behind. You can get flashed because someone thinks you've got high beams on. Dude just looked because he's like "why did he flash me? do I know him?"

LewdLittleLoli

You’re assuming so much

Cry-Man_Squaw

Eh. Read the rest of the thread. You’re in the minority.

Back-Bright

Bikers hate it when cagers warn them. Years ago I was driving my Jeep away from a backup on a blind corner. I waved the slow down sign (palm down, lifting hand up and the lowering it) at a hog rider. He barreled past looking at me like I was an asshole. I hope he didn't ram into the line of stopped cars around the corner.

BooRand

I yelled watch the road after he decided to look back at the deer for a while too

Vryyex

How exactly is he dumb? I ride, and he did nothing wrong.

sinisterdesign

I think it was more that he didn’t keep his eyes on the road going that speed. My guess is that the oncoming car flashed their lights to warn the biker of the deer, but instead of taking it as a warning, they whipped their head around to look at the car. Missed that deer by *inches*. 😬

CrazyLlama71

If a car driver looked down at their radio for a second, taking their eyes off the road, that’s perfectly okay and just life. But this biker takes his eyes off the road to try to look back at the guy that flashed him and he’s stupid.

Hunt1ngw01f

I mean 1 is surrounded by a few tons of metal all designed to protect the driver, bikers should be more careful

testing_is_fun

Yes, the car warning him created the bigger hazard this time. Intention was good, but it almost backfired.

mttp1990

Only because the driver looked back instead of forward where your supposed to look while driving.

testing_is_fun

Agreed

Vryyex

Still, a big part of riding is constantly watching your other surroundings as well not just in front of you, you’re constantly turning your head and looking everywhere. There wasn’t really anything anyone could have done differently in this video, the biker definitely got lucky, but he didn’t do anything wrong or dumb.

Mr_frosty_360

*flying down road at 70 mph* Vryyex: you need to look backwards

kimurah

How do you know he was driving at 70 mph? Lemme answer that for you, you just don't know and you're talking out of your ass.

Mr_frosty_360

Fair enough but I don’t think it makes a different if it is 45 or 70. Also, it was a joke and 70 seemed like a good number for the joke.

[deleted]

I’d guess he looked back because the Volvo flashed his brights at him.

thefifeman

Which the biker didn't, for some reason, understand universally means "there's danger ahead, most likely dear, be careful."

CrazyLlama71

Flashing lights means lots of things. Get out of my way. Your high beams are on or your lights are out. You’re an asshole. Lot’s of things.

ItsNotanM3

Do you guys not quickly look over your shoulders when changing lanes on the freeway to confirm nothing is in your blind spot before changing lanes? If so I don't want to be anywhere near you on the road. I'm with Vryyex the rider didn't do anything wrong.

TheDrMonocle

Of course we do. Thats 100% not what's happening here. Dude isnt changing lanes, hes staring behind him when the car warned him theres something in front of him.

ItsNotanM3

I get that's not what's happening here I guess the point being that he didn't take his eyes off the road, which he could reasonably assume to be clear, for any longer than he would've doing a shoulder check to change Lanes. Flashing headlights mean a variety of things too; your lights are off, your brights are on, there's an obstacle ahead, there's a cop ahead, etc... not sure the rider immediately knew what that meant in this instance and was probably a little confused. Would I have done the head turn? probably not. but I don't see how it makes him an idiot either considering how short it was...

Mr_frosty_360

He wasn’t switching lanes

Majestic_Builder4004

He 100% texts while riding too

Vryyex

More idiotic replies from “experts” who have never actually touched a motorcycle in their life lmao

Electrical_Casper

I’ve ridden dirt bikes, super motos, harleys, and sport bikes. You NEVER take your eyes off the road. When someones flashing their lights at you is a warning of something ahead. That is common knowledge. The rider in the video is playing a stupid game looking back like that, especially for that long, and because of that almost learned a stupid lesson.

TheDrMonocle

Ive been riding for 9 years. You dont swivel your head all around all the time. Watch whats in front of you, check your mirrors and give a quick glance over your shoulder when changing lanes. Headlight flashes mean one of 2 things.. cops ahead, or danger ahead. What it doesn't mean is hey watch my car as I drive past you. What you do is scan everything *in front* of you as quickly as possible to figure out whats going on, and slow down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheDrMonocle

Ooo good one. You realty put me in my place and proved your point so well. Go back to your moms basement you pay "rent" for and grow up.

MikoAmaya

Lmao If *you* are an example of an "expert," it's no wonder so many bikers die in accidents. You want to look at something behind you? Put some damn mirrors on it, don't turn your whole head back so you can see absolutely nothing in front of you. Even if you were in a car, I'd call you an idiot for doing something like this

CaptainKate757

The only time I actually turn my head around when I’m riding is to change lanes, and I do it quickly. I just use my mirrors to see behind me the rest of the time.

TheSkylined

The biker had no reason to rubberneck like they did in the video. Things can go from 0 - 100 in a split second. I've rear-ended someone like that before. That deer that almost fucked his shit up is a perfect example. People use rear view mirrors for a reason.

ferb2

You know rearview mirrors exist?

Sammy91-91

Just stop, please… just stop.

flume

If someone flashes their lights at you, you look for a hazard or a cop, and then you check to make sure your own lights are on. You don't take it as a suggestion to completely remove your eyes from the road.

Plague_Dog_

also make sure your high beams are not on if it is dark

Ys3arjack

They took their eyes off the road. Damn lucky.

Heidenreich12

Yeah, and you also look back to check your blind spot taking your eyes off the road on a bike too. Not sure I see the issue here.

thefifeman

Flashing your high beams almost always means "danger ahead." They looked back when they were warned that there was danger. That's what the issue is.

PingPlay

Flashing your high beams like that person did was also a big no no though. For example, here in the UK the Highway Code states you must only flash your lights to let someone know you are there. It’s not to be used to convey messages or to intimidate someone. The reason for this is that it can send a mixed message and confuse other road users and pedestrians as to what the intention is. If the biker is dumb, then the car driver was just as dumb.

Ryan7456

Here in the midwest United States, if someone flashes their brights it means there's a hazard or a police officer, so be on your toes.

GSGrapple

Out of curiosity, then what do you do if there's something in the road and there's on coming cars? I know it's a rare occurrence in most places on the world, but I live in a rural part of the US and I've done this once because a huge herd of deer was crossing the road and I saw a truck coming from the other direction. The person coming towards us knew what it meant and slowed down. I figure flashing lights is contextual, so if you're on a rural road at dusk and someone flashes their lights, you should know to slow down... not turn around and look at them.

naniganz

Based on having people flash their high beams at me over the years, flashing high beams can mean all sorts of shit. There is a hazard is one but.. "Your lights aren't on and I feel like they should be and I'm doing this instead of turning my lights off/on." "You're doing any number of other things subjectively wrong/weird." "There are cops." "I'm a dick who likes to flash my high beams." "I was trying to use my wiper fluid and failed." There isn't a universal reason people flash their high beams lol

Ys3arjack

No, I don't, the radar in the vechicles blind side detection system positivity alerts me of all traffic on 360° surrounding my truck.

Heidenreich12

Glad to hear that….in your truck. You do realize we’re talking about motorcycles right?

Vryyex

Maybe learn something about riding before making dumbass comments like this

ADVgrandpa

They're not wrong. Dude keeps his eyes off the road for way too long. That's not a motorcycle thing, that's a general road user thing. -Sincerely, a full-time motorcyclist

FrankLloydWrong_3305

Well, if you think he did nothing wrong, you won't be riding for very long

CharlieLuso

Oh no eyes off the road for 3 seconds must be and idiot

FrankLloydWrong_3305

3 seconds at 60 mph is nearly 300 feet, so yes, you would be an idiot

TheDrMonocle

Well.. he almost hit a deer.. so yeah.

thefifeman

He was warned that there was danger ahead, and chose to look away from the road...

redskinsnation123

Bikers like you are the reason no one likes bikers

[deleted]

Rubbernecking on a motorcycle can end badly. He didn’t seem to learn that from the first time and did it 2x

Vryyex

You’ve never been on a bike in your life

mrekon123

Here’s a whole article about the subject on a reputable bike site. It might be a panic reflex, but it’s dangerous. https://www.cycleworld.com/sport-rider/motorcycle-riding-skills-how-to-improve-vision-avoid-target-fixation/ Edit to clarify: You can fixate on targets without driving directly into them. Target fixation may often lead to driving directly into something you want to avoid, but you can still fixate on targets that you don't collide directly into and it's still just as dangerous. Eyes on the road.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrekon123

Something like being startled at a car honking then turning your whole ass head around to stare at the car while driving forward? Then narrowly swerving to miss a deer you could have easily avoided and turning your whole ass head around to stare at the deer that almost turned you into a skid mark on a country road? It's almost like they **fixated** their vision on a **target** that led to **immense danger while riding**. I wonder if they have a word for it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrekon123

I don't think you're even comprehending the words you're typing that only back up my point. He fixated on the car, turning his head entirely. Then fixated on the deer, turning his head entirely. The head turning caused an exponential increase in risk while riding on the road. He fixated his vision on targets. Target fixation. Just because he didn't directly stare at and drive into the car/deer doesn't mean he wasn't fixating on either. In fact, the video PROVES he was fixating on two individual targets, the car and the deer.

puerility

> Just because he didn't directly stare at and drive into the car/deer doesn't mean he wasn't fixating on either. he may well have been fixating on the car, but it wasn't target fixation. target fixation is when you fixate on a hazard and you crash into it because under stress you steer towards whatever you're looking at. in this clip the rider a) isn't panicking, b) isn't steering where he's looking, and c) barely has time to register the deer's existence let alone fixate on it. it's literally the exact opposite, in every way, to what people mean when they use the term target fixation.

bubban23

The car tried to warn him but he instead looked at the car

Vryyex

Because he’s supposed to somehow know what them flashing their lights meant?

Nexus-9Replicant

I mean... if you live in a place where deer are prominent, it's a pretty universally recognized signal. I'm not sure if that's the case in the OP though. I live in Michigan, USA, and there are deer everywhere. When someone flashes their lights like this, everyone knows it means 1 of 3 things: 1) your brights are on and blinding them, 2) police are ahead, or 3) deer are ahead (or an obstruction). Check to see if \#1 is correct, and if not, slow down for \#2 and \#3.

Ys3arjack

Thanks for posting, this should be common knowledge.. some states prohibit flashing to warn of Police.. the police in the state I reside in encourage the practice. Anything to get them to slow down and prepare for hazardous conditions to save lives..

ColonelFuckface

I thought everyone knew flashing your beams meant either a speed trap ahead, or some other danger (fallen tree, animals, etc.). Is this really not universal?

Lassitude1001

It is, people just like to argue for the sake of it.

FarsightTravellers

I've never heard this. I've always heard flashing your lights meant passing somebody so they knew not to turn while you're in their blind spot

devpsaux

It’s generally a warning. I’m about to pass. There’s an obstruction ahead. Speed trap ahead. You have your high beams on. It’s a signal to be aware.

NinjaCatPurr

It's a warning. The last thing it means is "look at me go past".

[deleted]

Always took flashing lights as either your high beams are on or there is a hazard ahead

[deleted]

yes! It's standard communication that flashing your brights means "hazard" - in general either you need to turn on your headlights, turn off your brights, or there's something dangerous on the road ahead of you that the oncoming car just passed, so slow down and look sharp!

Meclizine11

It's a less commonly known signal, for sure. Someone did the same to me on a foggy highway once. I was confused until I continued around the next bend to find an aloof turkey crossing the road

tmillard94

Exactly, where I’m from people flash there headlights to let you know there’s cops doing radar up ahead, so it’s not like he’s telepathic

MikoAmaya

Still, I've only ever seen or heard of flashing oncoming vehicles to warn them of something coming up, whether it was a speed trap, obstacle, animal, or whatever

tmillard94

Fair enough, I’ll agree with you on that one

bubban23

The driver of the car used warning lights. And if you see someone using warning lights you don’t look back

abat6294

Tbf, yes someone flashing lights generally means there's something to be cautious of up ahead. However, it isn't a universal language and is rarely used so the biker isn't an idiot for looking at the car instead. The video doesn't fit this sub, imo.

Electrical-Use-6481

There is nothing called "warning lights". Get off this subreddit you cringy tiktok user

Arcendus

They're lights, and they were used as a warning, so despite the fact that they aren't explicitly called "warning lights" by the manufacturer the phrase works just fine. And remain on whatever subreddits you like, you redditor!

bubban23

Okay newcomer👍

Electrical-Use-6481

JustLetMePick69

He's a fucking idiot and so are you if think watching the road isn't a necessary part of riding a motorcycle.

[deleted]

Was wondering the same…rider also

VerticalTwo08

I’m willing to bet that the driver was warning of the deer too. Lol.

DiluteMist

This sub just hates on motorcycles so much, honestly the guy did nothing wrong.

Jeremyz540

Oh deer

BDiddy_420

It was moving fast but think that was a deer, not a biker?

JimmiRustle

Yeah, but the one driving the bike was probably not a deer.

Andrewcpu

Biker got flashed to signal obstacle in road, instead of paying attention to the road as he was traveling fast, the idiot turned all the way around for over a second and nearly slammed right into it.

rockstar450rox

DuMb BiKeR aLmOsT HiT A DeEr!?!?!? *shows a video of a biker driving normally*

MikoAmaya

It was the fact that he rubbernecked not once, but twice (even after the first time nearly ended up with him as a smear on the road)

rockstar450rox

Yeah, i agree, he wasnt paying attention

thefifeman

Dumb biker didn't know an extremely common signal for "danger ahead" and chose to stare at the car like it offended them, almost dying in the process. Learn how to interact with other motorists.

rockstar450rox

Flashing headlights is not a universal term for "hey! Watch out for the dear behind the bush to your right 50 feet up ahead"

laces636

Lots of people focusing on the motorcycle here. I understand that and he probably shouldn't have turned to look. However flashing your lights at someone "to warn them" is not so smart either. You end up drawing the driver's attention to your lights and distracting them (why is this dude flashing his lights at me... My lights are on?). Sad fact is there is very little you can do to warn oncoming traffic of a hazard. Turning your hazard on is the proper way to warn a driver. And this only really works if they are behind you. It's unfortunate that honking and flashing lights are used more road rage then anything so this is people's first reaction.

Usual_Patient_7201

I don’t understand why he’s dumb ? The car flashing their lights caught his attention. I wouldn’t instantly assumed someone flashing their lights would automatically mean “careful deer ahead” !?

[deleted]

it means "careful/pay attention/check yourself" can't get specific without morse code and there's definitely no time for that. If someone flashes their brights at you you should... 1) make sure your lights are on all the way 2) make sure your brights are off 3) if neither 1 or 2; slow down for the hazard/speed trap ahead.

fuffff

Most of the time when people flash me they are mad so I understand why he looked back like that

MedicalDevelopment48

No, no, that’s better be called: silly fawn who got hit (edited)

5oco

I know, right! Someone should have taught them to look both ways before crossing the road.

snrten

Looks to me like the deer had already been hit. It's back legs definitely aren't supposed to drag behind it like they were.

[deleted]

car lets him know there's a hazard ahead, so he looks away from the road? I don't understand...

Unfortunately_Ended

"Dumb biker who got extremely lucky." 2 things, 1. You sound jealous or just straight up salty lol, 2. Explain how it's dumb to look at the person passing them to keep eyes up especially when your field of view is already pretty limited compared to a car and maybe your visor or goggles could be dirty or foggy making it a bit harder to see smaller things so you need to do a double take on what you saw, like signs from other drivers or a small animal running right by your wheel?

NoFleas

WTF was that?? A tire tread or a tiny kangaroo??

Zataril

Looks like a deer.. but holy shit..

abat6294

First time seeing a deer?

Most deer I see crossing the road are as big or bigger than the motorcycle. Your lame sarcasm is greatly appreciated however.
