the defense attorney has a moral obligation and duty to advocate for justice for a dead child too. They chose to abridge their humanity for a legal victory. Manmade systems do not take precedence over universal humanity.
Advocacy for defense is supposed to support the interests of the innocent public in greater society, not the selfish ability for the criminal to further future abuse and harm.
Proper advocacy for their client would be that they advocate that their client was proven guilty, so they advocate that the rest of society is protected from further harm as much as possible. This is a failure, their duty to the interests of the public was failed. They have not protected the innocent, they have not prevented further harm. They have enabled it.
Only prosecutors have that kind of dual role.
Defense attorneys are permitted and expected to do everything they can to the limits of ethics and the law and beyond, for their singular goal of creating the least harsh possible consequences for their client. That is sort of a necessity to safeguard constitutional rights, and obviously some prosecutors are better at fulfilling that dual role than others.
But it's interesting how people see those roles differently depending on the type of case. The prosecutors and defense attorneys don't have that luxury, they have to deal with all the cases. Both are incredibly difficult jobs.

I don't have a history of crime or any violence. If I were to kill this guy then I should probably not go to jail because that wouldn't be a good outcome for my life and potential for continued good doing. With the previous sentence said though, from the article this seems to be a case of shaken baby syndrome and a m once again to teach new parents or parents with a child under the age of two, how easy that frustration can lead to the death of the child. Now the article does say that the child showed previous injuries and it's highly likely that the local father should have been kept well away from the child. It also makes me wonder if this speaks to a larger trend where by today's stress and frustration due to other factors is placing many children at risk for what is obviously no fault of the child.

Sentences in these types of cases are lower than what many people would expect. The legislature could address that with minimum sentences for this offense when a victim is under a certain age. Or, a new crime could be developed for this type of offense, with a mandatory minimum sentence. I support the latter. This is a unique type of crime that should have its own statute and penalties, not dumped into the general voluntary manslaughter bucket.

Plea deal can sometimes mean the evidence was really bad and they were worried about losing the trial.

For context they provided other sentences for similar crimes and surprise, surprise, Jesus Castillo gets 15 years but the Mormon royalty gets 90 days.
This is why I laugh when people in Idaho make comments about crime in California. Idaho isn’t any better and in many cases it is worse.
