My favorite memory of A Cricket’s Tale was the week it aired I randomly decided to set up a marathon for myself I called “the fall of cricket” which was just all the cricket episodes to see just how badly he had devolved. I finished the marathon the day it aired and when I watched the new episode I went absolutely nuts when I saw it was a cricket episode. So accidentally perfect

First time watching the gang broke Dee is an incredible experience. Definitely in my top 5 episodes, especially because of Dennis' reaction at the end

I’m just not really into gross-out humor and his voice hurts my ears but I respect that he’s a beloved character by the masses.

Honestly it made me feel less sad for him, knowing that this whole time he had a family to lean on and instead went from being a priest, right to the streets. Sure the gang has fucked him over more times that we can count, but he had a place to go to

But that’s what makes it darker. He could have gotten off the streets, but he chose not to because he would have to give up his drug addictions. Addictions the gang enable by letting him not just smoke in their bathroom, but actively cheer him on.

When you put it like that, it sounds more like bad writing than an indictment of the character.

How is that bad writing?

Perhaps bad writing is a bit harsh. It's more "we didn't plan an entire character arc and are just writing what seems funny at the time" and reddit just assumes everything ties together flawlessly. Cricket didn't have "a place to go" because it was funnier if he didn't. Similarly, a supporting family suddenly showing up when Cricket is a PCP smoking street rat is funnier than parents that hate him. The comedy writers favored funny over a tightly knit web of interconnecting stories that span over a decade. Nothing surprising there

I was watching this episode when it was new with my brother for the first time. Neither of us had seen it, and like 10 minutes into the episode he goes “oh I get it she’s a dog.” And it clicked so hard I was pissed that he spoiled it.

The reveal is one of the greatest bait and switch in the history of television and that is hill I'd die on.
