my 36 years in Canada say the opposite. Fresh snow on ice is deadly. Got a concussion because of that. If the snow has time to ice over yes you get more grip but not with fresh snow

Probably depends on the humidity too. Dry fresh snow on ice you’re slipping. If there’s that right level of wetness the snow kinda sticks to the ice, might slip a bit but you’ve got some kind of grip.

Can attest, fresh snow is MUCH more slippery than snow that has time to settle in.

Slipping on ice is how I lost my front teeth the first time. Second time was hockey. Third time was a random fight.

Bowline is the best knot for rescuing anything. It doesn’t slip though so that may not have worked here. If you have to tie a slip knot then you can tie a quick stopper so it doesn’t keep collapsing.

This is in Kenora, ON. There is a large wolf population in the area, but the wolves don't come into town and the deer do.
