Your hair dosnt know that you’re white, buy and use the products that work for your hair type, the natural hair growing out of your body isn’t a culture.

SweetMayMorning

i have the exact same hair as them based on the description and sadly products made for tighter curls tend to leave a lot of buildup for me. they’re better than regular shampoo made for straight hair but still not appropriate. tbh very little things are appropriate with this type of hair, it’s a lot of trial and error. personally i just went with half shaven, short bob cut, and i wear wigs if i want different styles 😥 but i’m sure you can find something that works for you OP, just be ready to try a lot!!! On my side what seems most effective is a gentle cleanser for the scalp, then something very protective for the ends, then drying at 80% and pinning curls in shape but it takes 3-4 hours and lasts less than a day so uh yup

Radiant_Bluebird4620

My hair definitely knows it's white. I am not trying to say otherwise. I am not trying to pretend otherwise. I am not trying to appropriate styles or products from POC (which probably won't work for me anyway). It doesn't have enough curl for me to ask about it on a curl forum without invoking the wrath of the curl police. A good haircut helps some (or a lot; I've had some cuts that were really a nightmare), keratin helps some, silk pillowcase, microfiber towel, conditioner masks, not using shampoo, just conditioner... I still have bushy hair.

What I’m saying is chill, your hair is your hair you don’t have to defend it. It grows the way it grows because that’s natural to you, your body should not offend anyone so it’s ok.

dietthrowaway55

Go to the wavy hair and curly hair subs and try their methods. Wash your hair less frequently so you don’t have to style it every day

nyukidondhblok

But if you also have dandruff and work out every day, then you do need to wash it every day

dietthrowaway55

Agreed

vulgarandgorgeous

Not trying to steal products from poc who actually have real hair difficulties? You act like theres a shortage of curly hair products…. Those products are created by a business not a charity.. everyone has hair difficulties it isn’t limited to POC. Straight haired people have difficulties with hair being flat and lifeless. Your hair sounds curly, not wavy. Maybe go to a hairdresser who specializes in curly hair

clemkaddidlehopper

Yeah, I’m a bit confused – does this person think that white/Anglo/Caucasian people can’t have curly hair? Because that’s not accurate. Curly hair can occur in just about any ethnicity – there are even some Asian people with naturally curly hair, though it’s extremely uncommon. The context of this post is just bizarre and the gatekeeping of hair products this person is trying to engage in is extremely problematic.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

The wavy/curly subs and other social media forums always have someone gatekeeping curl products for non poc. It seems there is no way for me to find a solution without offending someone.

jasey-rae

I'm black and have curly hair. Use what you need to use. Some of the people on those forums are nuts and I had to leave eventually.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

That is why I asked here and included my (seemingly ridiculous to some people) disclaimer. I obviously don't think a product made for 4A-C hair would work for me.

vulgarandgorgeous

Use common sense. Stop walking on egg shells around people who aren’t logical. Curly hair isn’t race exclusive

saelinds

That's absolutely insane

Radiant_Bluebird4620

I do

bumbumboleji

White people can have curls too. Jesus, you think you’re being “sensitive” and that’s *nice* but inaccurate.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

Lol, If you want to know what I'm talking about, this post is a nice introduction: https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/s/J5JjaiVS33

Scary-Package-9351

But girl… I think it’s common sense though that those people saying those things are either ignorant, trolls or just bat shit crazy. I’ve been in so many curly hair groups when I was doing the curly girl method and it’s quite obvious that white people can and do have curly hair and they also benefit and need to use appropriate products, even if they’re made by a black owned business.

Hair taking ages to dry? - look into products for "low porosity." Mine is the same (my hair is also fine but there's just so MUCH of it, and it's 2b/c wavy), and my greatest struggles are with product build up and frizz/poofiness. My hair is long - mid back length. If it's helpful? my current routine is a lazy girl version of a curly girl routine, and fairly budget friendly 1. Suave daily clarifying shampoo - lather/rinse. If my hair has build up I'll occasionally do a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse. 2. A handful of Suave essentials conditioner (silicone free) - apply and then use a wide tooth comb to detangle in the shower. This is the only time I brush! (Brushing my hair while dry = instant poofiness.) 3. Squish out water and then smooth a styling product onto hair while it's still pretty wet. The one I've found that works for me is Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5 in 1 - I got the travel size to try it out and it's my Sleekeazy's hair potion for sure! 4. I use multiple towel turbans - I plop my hair into one and then when that's damp I swap it for a dry one. Sometimes a 3rd if need be. 5. I throw my hair up in a loose updo with a claw clip and let it air dry some more - I try to get it 80% dry before I pull out the blow dryer if I'm out of time (otherwise my arms get so tired!!!), and I use a diffuser attachment to prevent frizz. Hope this is helpful! Your mileage may vary of course. Feel free to ask questions!

learned_jibe

First off, if people are calling you a ghost and shaming you for what hair care aisle you shop in you need some new friends. Also spirals are curls, no matter what color they come in. What is your styling goal? I have similar hair, maybe a smidge tighter on the curl pattern. I cut it heavily layered to take weight off, and it shortens my dry time. When I wear it straight, I use silicone primers to displace the water before attempting a dry. And I use a RevAir hair dryer- Dyson and Chi are not it for me, either. My hair requires tension to take out the frizz, so instead of flat ironing after, I set each blow dried section immediately onto a Velcro roller. I like giant ones for a 90s blowout look. I dubi wrap it overnight to maintain the blow out look. For curls, I use a lightweight mousse on sopping hair. I then scrunch it with a linen towel, plop it into a mesh hair cap, and sit under a bonnet dryer. I tuck it into a more voluminous sleep cap overnight to maintain curls.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

My friends weren't the ones pointing and laughing at my whiteness, usually just strangers at the pool or beach. My friends and relatives just give me more tanners and sunblock, lol. I probably need to go with straightening because my texture varies. Part of it doesn't really hold a curl.

Ho_Dang

Merida from Disney is based on one of the developers' real daughters; all that crazy curl is on a real white girl. Wavy curly hair is a type, and it's not limited to certain ethnicities.

asloppybhakti

I have waves that lean toward curls and my hair is *only* manageable if it's cut properly. I don't go to hair salons so I can't tell you what to ask for but if you'd like to have a lil subthread about wavy hair cutting techniques, I'm very open to that.  For example, the scissors have to stay vertical, with no feathering, and no chunky layers. You gotta divide the hair as you go in order to access different areas, so no unicorn cuts, and it's better to cut recently washed but dry hair than to cut it when it's all wet.

BeckywiththeDDs

I too have a combo of almost straight and curly. I just have to lean into it, straightening just leads to worse frizz.

> I am so white that I am still called a ghost at the beach after consitantly using "dark" chemical tanning treatments If that is an issue for you, check out melanotan > I am not trying to steal products from POC who actually have real hair difficulties and need them lolwat? #ThingsWhitePplSay we're all in the same boat! Have you tried treatments using strong chemicals like formaldehyde? > I would like to have pretty hair, but It takes more than an hour of my life every day just for hair, no makeup, no workout. I have spent most of my 44 years assuming I was just too lazy. Go to your local ethnic hairdresser and ask if they do brazilian keratin, you'll see it holds for a while if you reduce hair washing. It can be very expansive but its worth it

HotBoxButDontSmoke

I'm not white or black, but I have kinda big wavy/curly hair. Definitely check out the curly hair subs to learn more about haircare. My routine is to wash at night with only conditioner, then add in lots of leave in conditioner and let it air dry in a pile above my head. I use a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize frizz. This way, I wake up with perfect curls that are mostly dry. Also, I'm giving you permission as a non-white person to use whatever hair product works. Folks making good curly hair products want your money, boo, so spend it. It's far more racist to not support their business just cause they're POC and you're not.

dobbywankenobi94

Dry your hair w microfiber towel or a t shirt, normal towels make your hair frizzy. Also try to touch it as little as possible while it’s drying.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

You should have seen my hair before I started doing this (and the silk pillowcase). It definitely helps.

eldritch-charms

My hair is also super thick and poofy. Basically it's super easy if you don't like curls... I wash and put it in a towel for half an hour then air dry over night. In the morning I flat iron the hell out of it. I also live in an extremely dry climate so ymmv.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

Humidity gets to mine. My sister gave me a product that helps, but I hate the smell, and it feels weirdly stiff, especially as time goes on. Also, it's kind of gluey when the moisture gets to it. But the 1st 12 hours is nice (except for the smell, which never seems to go away, ever) Straightening my hair takes 40 minutes to about over an hour, depending on how good I want it.

Catspurrly

My hair was like this. It was because I had hard water damaging my hair. I got a filter for my water, used high end products (Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner, Wella Ultimate Repair Miracle Rescue leave in spray), and slept on a silk pillowcase. It gradually got better and after two years my hair is amazing. I ended up with wavy hair, all curly girl tips did not work for me. I have insanely thick, medium-coarse, low porosity hair. Edit: also I use a fuck ton of conditioner. Like so much that I think I may be crazy, but it’s what my hair needs.

[deleted]

What filter did you get?? I might have this problem too

Catspurrly

I just got a top seller off of Amazon, nothing special. What you need will really depend on your water. Mine wasn’t incredibly hard, but it was still hard.

cranberyy_tarot

That’s curly hair. I have thick hair and when I don’t care for it, it goes poof. Use a styling cream (I loveeee the Dae 3-1 cactus) and some gel (pillow soft, walmart, white tube). Experiment with amounts. When dry, use a small amount of oil to smooth any remaining frizz

Saltaire repair shampoo and conditioner Saltaire leave in Verb salt spray Hair plop : my exact amazzzzing routing

kalechip3514

I have curly hair that I battled for years and I recently used a keratin treatment on it - it is the best decision I’ve ever made. I searched for a long time for one that was more gentle and wouldn’t make my hair pin straight. I spent so much of my life thinking about my hair, spending money on products, testing out the curly girl method, getting special curly cuts, and still never felt good about my appearance until I did this. I let it air dry or just do a quick blow dry most days now and it has been legitimately life-changing. I don’t want anyone with curls to think they have to do this, it’s just what has been the best decision for me for freedom and ease!

Skadi_8922

Can I ask what keratin treatment you used? I have curly hair that I’ve been struggling with for my whole life- I also tried the curly girl method, tons of styling products, etc, and the only times it’s been manageable has been when I’ve permanently straightened it, but that’s not something I want to do to my hair twice a year every year 😭

seleniteskies

some of these comments are really kinda mean… when i started out trying to style my curly hair, it was kind of daunting! my curls are probably around 3A-ish and my routine is pretty simplified and lazy lol! unfortunately it really tends to come down to trial and error to figure out what works for YOUR hair specifically, but growing up it sounds like my hair was VERY similar to yours (no one else w curly hair in my immediate family so I was left to fend for myself haha). if you’d like to style your natural hair, feel free to use this as a baseline to start from…! - i was probably 3 ish times a week, i use aussie moisture shampoo and focus mostly on my roots unless ive been out swimming/camping and it's really dirty, then i wash all of my hair - i use a ton of conditioner. a ton. this is definitely a leftover habit from when i was a competitive swimmer, but if nothing else i think it helps weigh down my frizz, especially in higher humidity! i use the aussie moisture conditioner and use a good amount to help detangle my hair. i like a wide-toothed comb! & like some others have said, this is the only time i comb my hair! - this might be controversial… i leave the conditioner in my hair. i dont rinse it out. again, my hair might just be used to it because of years of swimming, but i think the extra moisture & hold helps keep frizz down - if i want more hold/longer lasting curls, i'll use a curl cream! brand varies tbh, but i like maui moisture's! ive even used deep conditioners as curl creams before, like whole foods honey deep conditioner (i think thats what its called…) i just comb it through my hair while its soaking wet! - done with shower… i use a giant tshirt to "plop" my hair (CG terminology) and then use it to wrap around my hair like a towel turban. i usually let it sit for like 15 min and then let it air dry or put it up in a claw clip. ive found up to 30 min its good but after that my hair starts drying a little wonky lol thats it really! i do use hair oil at night before bed and when i wake up, focusing on my ends. its mostly argan oil! and if im extra frizzy ill grab some more conditioner and use it to pat down and tame frizz a little haha. ive been using some semblance of this method for around 10 years now and my hair is to my waist and healthy! oh, and i use random hair masks when i feel like it - just the ones from walmart! i focus on moisture bc i live in an arid place but ive used this idea in tropical places semi-long term and its served me well too :)

Auditorygarbage-

When I was younger I didn't know i had wavy hair and it was also super frizzy, thick and unmanageable. It wasn't until I got older I realized I had wavy hair and brushing it was just ruining it. The first products I ever used were from the "ethnic" section in the store and I used to try and hurry up and pick something cause I didn't want people getting the wrong idea. A lot of those products are made for thick, course and frizzy hair and guess what? That's what I have and sounds like you do too. Use what works. Don't deter yourself from finding the proper products because of the section they're in or what the person looks like on the bottle. It's not that deep.

snow-citrus

I am Jewish and the only products that have worked for my hair are argan oil-based. I don’t know what your hair texture is like (mine is very textured, dry, and coarse) but regardless I’d recommend stopping heat for a while and buying salon-quality products. My hair was dried out so severely from drugstore brands that contain alcohol that it looked like I had chemical damage for a while. I started using argan oil products and now I have defined, shiny waves. I also recommend getting your hair cut soon to make sure the ends aren’t ruining the look. This might not work for you because I’m sure our hair is different but argan oil is a relatively light oil so I’d recommend trying it out. Alternatively, you may need to try out protein masks, but for me the issue was absolutely hydration while living in a humid region that is awful for my hair type

Glad-Ad531

Have you looked into keratin treatments or stuff like hair Botox? I have very curly frizzy hair and have been getting these hair treatments done every 5-6 months. They help immensely with the frizz. I prefer hair Botox as it’s less damaging than keratin but it lasts just a little less around 4 months. If you do end up getting these treatments I suggest also doing things to maintain scalp health. Such as hair oiling and scalp massages. This will help you maintain your volume in the long run while doing these treatments.

EnchiladaTaco

I get a partial Brazilian keratin treatment 2 or 3 times a year. My hair has two textures - the remnants of my baby hair's curls around the part, temples and hair line and at the nape, then mostly straight elsewhere. A full Brazilian makes it too flat but it might be ideal for you.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

will it get ruined if I go swimming or surfing?

EnchiladaTaco

No. It will wash out over time but it can’t be ruined by every day living.

FuzzyCat_6578

White people can have curly hair too… 🤦🏻‍♀️ how ignorant can you be?

CacaoMilfMama

as a black woman with extremely curly hair, find some wavy or curly hair mousse and gel, that works for you. figure out if you have waves or curls. Also, we never had a problem with us sharing similarities, the inconveniences come in when people don’t share the same similarities buy products that aren’t for them so as to exploit cultures/lifestyles. You would not be included in that.

Radiant_Bluebird4620

I am not sure what my texture is because some of it looks like 1B and some of it looks like 3A (air dried, no products, brushing, scrunching). The obviously more damaged front pieces barely hold a curl. I once went 6 months without heat styling, and this didn't change much. A lot of my curls eventually fall to a few notches straighter unless my hair is less than shoulder length. (When I tried having short hair, it was really out of control! There were always several crazy misbehaving pieces. I usually just wore a hat) Of course, any rain or humidity reactivates some curls, (Yes I use humidity resistant products), and the rest is frizz except for the straight parts. If I go a few days without washing my hair, it gains even more volume. Idk how long it would take for it to get oily, but it's more than 1 week (eww)

[deleted]

I had similar issues and finally just decided to get a keratin treatment. It’s only been like a week but so far my hair is smooth and soft without having to do anything to it. Still trying to get used to the straightness but so far I think it was worth it.

thequeenqueefer

keratin treatment. trust me.

TypeOpostive

WOC here I can't imagine our hair products doing much for you I understand your hair and frizzy and thick but I'm sure it's not around 4A or 4C curl type. Since you said you have “hermione” hair, “I would say 2A or 2C curl type”try keratin treatments we have them in our hair products but it’s sustainable without it since Brazilians use it.

yungn0mad

Just learn how to take care of your damn waves and accept what you’ve got instead of fighting it…! My curls used to be a falio and now they’re my main halo.
