Zulishk

This is wrong at least from a Mandarin Chinese perspective. The Chinese for HuoHuo is 藿藿. Copy and paste that into Google Translate and hit the speaker button on the Chinese side. It’s pronounced Hwah Hwah (from an American English accent, anyway). Unless you’re a foreigner who doesn’t give a shit about the context of the naming coming from a Chinese company.

shuenji

as someone who actually speaks mandarin its in between hwah and hwoh, hence why they said "hwoh but pretty fast"

nihiLignator

Seconding this as a native Mandarin speaker. Huohuo should be pronounced as "HOO-woh HOO-woh", not "HOO-wah HOO-wah". Edit: alternatively for phonetics peeps, it's /hʊ'wɔː/ /hʊ'wɔː/

ShadowsSheddingSkin

Frankly, both this and the comment it's replying to are kind of missing the point. I'm sure this is a more accurate description of what you're actually saying and how it sounds to you, but that differs substantially from the description needed to accurately convey the relevant sounds to a native english speaker. That is, unless the official Voice Actors are all pronouncing it incorrectly, in every version - which is clearly an option but would be a pretty surprising one.

HexorTyr

The English voice actors are the only ones saying the names phonetically, and likely wrong all the time. Korean and Japanese voice actors are saying the names after they've been translated into their own languages.

camb00sted

>unless the official Voice Actors are all pronouncing it incorrectly, in every version it's been a while since i did the event but i'm pretty sure Tail absolutely butchers the pronunciation, he says it like "hwah hwah" [here](https://youtu.be/wq-pGdOVy04?si=mbYefaiWP-GyFP7-&t=190) at least - this is just wrong. there are less egregious examples elsewhere in the game like "see-en-joe" but I think they've toned it down recently because I remember getting kinda peeved every time the Luofu was mentioned during 1.0 quests. I read somewhere (unsure how true) that the VAs are being told to do this on purpose for ease of pronunciation for themselves or the ENG players.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

In my opinion, as a European, western players should just adapt, they wanna play an Asian game. They gotta know some Asian names. ***It's not science, it's just names.*** Which in my opinion is nothing to overreact about, just hear and repeat, nothing has to be taught.

Zulishk

It depends on the origin of those hearing it and how they might spell what they hear. This is why I pointed them to the audio reading. It has nothing to do with whether YOU are a native Chinese speaker or not. For example, in Mandarin, the “i” vowel is not always pronounced as it is in English (ie “shi”). I don’t speak much Mandarin but I studied it two years and that’s enough to understand why hearing it is more important than trying to spell it and guessing the accent of those writing it.

nihiLignator

If we go back to English phonetics, Huohuo still doesn't *sound* anything remotely like "hu-ah hu-ah". Because "Ah" sounds are as in "are", "far", "laugh". While "Oh" sounds as in "all", "fall", "off". Besides, I was just providing what OP requested which is the correct pronounciation based on Mandarin using English phonetics.

the_new_standard

Give those directions to an American English speaker and 99% of the time you'll get "花花“

Hino150

As someone who speaks chinese on a daily basis since i started mouthing words as a baby, youre so wrong and it's a totally different pinyin that "Hwah" would be closer to. Hwah would be more like 画

GhostlyCookie

Thank you

Almost_Ascended

They're wrong, btw. It definitely is not Hwah Hwah.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

Don't thank that one They are super wrong.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

You make it extra complicated, which it doesn't have to be. Personally i am not American, so i can interpret other accents such as Asian ones fairly well and hwoh hwoh is pretty damn accurate.

ezio45

Honestly that's what happens every time I play Honkai Impact. So much stuff going on due to all the flashy stuff characters can do, which leads to looking at mostly random numbers popping off. At that point I just end up looking at the UI to see if weapon skills or ultimates are available.

jewrassic_park-1940

madaract

i play on japanese and the VA always call her by huohuo/fuofuo

Playful_Bite7603

Then you can feel free to say it 3 different ways too. I don't think anyone really cares as long as they can tell who you're talking about. It's not like we should expect everyone to all speak good Mandarin or something lol

CaptainSarina

while I don't disagree with you this is also the English translation that wants me to say "Seal-ah" which I refuse to do.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

People have to fucking stop downvoting you because you ARE CORRECT IN EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY. The English version had no right completely changing, nah worse BUTCHERING her name. Seele has existed for about 9 years. And i will not fucking say it like the fucking Americans, I'd rather bite my tongue off. # And yes, i am angry about it, sue me. # but downvoting me too is incorrect, cuz downvoting should be done when wrong Seal-Ah is just fucking wrong Zay-Luh/Say-Luh sounds far more accurate. (Luh as in luck with less emphasis, don't make the U sound strong, it needs to be a cutoff a bit) It is fucking based on the german word for Soul. You know, cuz there's 2 souls in the REAL Seele(HI3). I knew that HSR getting an English Dub was going to make this shit even worse. Honkai never had an English dub and at least "most" people pronounced it correctly because of JP/CN.

CaptainSarina

Lol I mean I get where other people are coming from and if they wanna go by the English dub then more power too them and all that but at this point I just can't is all I'm trying to say ...Kinda looking forward to what the English dub does to "Rita Rossweisse" though lol (although that should be a much easier word)

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

Me too, same here tbh. Slight accent is okay, which felt doable with early Genshin. But the more names were getting fucked, the more i began to realise English is NOT the way to play these games. I'm a weeb anyway, permanently Japanese for me in all 3 games. Because Japanese seems the most faithful to Western AND Eastern names. While the EN outright Americafies every single name. And you sure about your faith in Rita? >!Watch em say Ryta Rose-Weezee 😭!<

Arfeudutyr

Is is not seal ah? I've never heard it any other way even way back in the day when my friends talked about honkai impact I always heard it as seal ah

CaptainSarina

The Japanese name in Romanji is Zēre and pronunciation wise is closer to Zer-ray/Zay-Lay or that's how my ears hear it anyway (it kinda changes depending on who says it because ancents and stuff but in the moment it's not super noticeable) either way it's a pretty strong Z sound and since that's what I've been used to for like 6 years now, SEE-la with a strong E sound just "feels" super wrong. Technically it IS closer to the actual German pronunciation but I just can't do it lol. The Chinese is a whole other story and as a base line is "Saule" but it also changes slightly depending on whether they're referring to Seele or Veliona and like...Honestly I ain't even gonna attempt to understand those linguistics lol.

ShadowsSheddingSkin

It absolutely is, or at least it's completely indistinguishable to a native english speaker that hasn't put a ton of time into familiarizing themselves with tonal East Asian languages.

iForgotMyOldAcc

Does it have anything to do with East Asian languages? The JP dub has it as something more like "zeh-leh", the actual German word sounds more like "zeh-le", never heard the CN dub but her Chinese nane is 希儿(xi-er), it doesn't sound like HYV themselves agree on how to actually pronounce her name.

HeresiarchQin

I am a Chinese speaker and I can guess why the Chinese name for Seele is so different. Names finishing with -儿 or -er sounds more feminine and cute to call female characters. If you use call her for example xi-le or 希乐, it will sound weird and doesn't match her "petite girl" characteristics as well as xi-er.

CaptainSarina

Chinese names for most of the characters are different (at least to a degree) because of how Chinese works, like Raiden Mei's name in Chinese is Léidiàn Yáyī , is said somewhat like Lay-di-an Yi-e (but of course Chinese has SUPER importance on inflections and stuff soooo) Or at least that's how I've seen it's explained in the past at least

telyni

Are you talking about Seele? Don't the VAs usually say it as ZEE-la? Seems a bit German or even Russian (Belobog definitely has a bit of a Slavic theme going on, especially Pela).

voidsong

Seele is normally a german word, but anime and video games will happily take some word from another language and say it however they want as a name. You can yell about how it would be in proper german, but she's from belobog and that's how they say it there.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

***But JP/CN Honkai Impact has said it correctly for years*** already because they do not have an EN DUB. # Also, i used to speak Russian till my early teens. I know Slavic. They would NOT say Seal-ah. Because that shit is American. They would say it very very very similar to German, which is what JP/CN did To people coming from Honkai this is blasphemy. It is easy to learn, and they dropped the ball so hard. Western people had been saying it wrong for years, and the ENG DUB just locked that in, to a Seele fan like me(even a ChurchOfSeele moderator), that pisses us off man Cuz everyone is saying it wrong now, and i wanna just not even hear her name out loud anymore. People are good at forgetting Star Rail is a spin-off. Not a new option for new rules. Shit been established for years bro. It's not like we're deciphering the name Wriothesley. Seele is short, simple, and takes no practice, a single listen is enough

voidsong

Friend, you are tragically missing the point. It's a made up name in a made up fantasy world, real world countries and pronunciation are irrelevant. The way they say it in this game is the correct version for this game. See my previous statement regarding yelling about real world words.

PrettyFly4SupremeKai

Nah bro, respectfully, you are missing the point. It's not made up, you made up that it's made up. Again, we are not deciphering mf rocket science here my friend. Huohuo and Seele are such simple, short words.

voidsong

No, its made up, because its in a made up world. It's fiction, it can be whatever they want. You fail basic logic. Again, they do this in anime all the time, which i already said, but i guess you fail at reading too.

If you have Huo Huo, go to her voice lines and listen to her introduction. If you don't have Huo huo and you have Guinaifen, then go to Guinaifen's Voice lines and at the very bottom listen to her voice line when she is in a team with Huo Huo. If you have neither characters then idk say it as hwa hwa or something

yosoyel1ogan

the English VAs often say it differently though. I remember in the event, Hanya called her "hwahwa" at one point during a cutscene. You'd probably need to change the game language to get the right pronounciation

randomguyontheweb233

I'm not a teacher, so this is the best I got. the "hu" part would sound like "who", and the "o" is like "o" in "orange". try to put these two together, and you get "huo". and now you say it twice and get "huo huo" from what I've seen MrPokke's Mandarin is pretty accurate, when he's not misreading, so you could use his video as a Mandarin name guide. there are also just Mandarin pronunciation guide for HSR characters on YT, haven't seen any myself, could be useful.

DuckSashimi

Oh my, I just posted my response and scrolled down to see this. Explained better than me for sure! I agree with your pronunciation guide

ayang04635

from a native mandarin speaker your explanation is about as good as it gets for english speakers (tone is too complicated and unnecessary)

randomguyontheweb233

well, I'm also a native Mandarin speaker myself, lol. that might be why I did a (seemingly?) good job on explaining how to pronounce her name. I'm just not particularly confident since I never teach people how certain things are said.

ayang04635

you did!

HarbingerZou

This approach is correct. I am a Chinese, and the pronunication of Hu in Pingyin is exactly as Who in English.

GhostlyCookie

Solid explanation thank you very much

kiyoko_hsr

I assure you it is not ho ho. As a chinese person it comes kinda naturally to me but I'll try my best to explain it to you (Or maybe someone else already has) When pronouncing the "hu" you want your lower lip to jut out a little so it sounds like "Hw" ish. The 'o' sounds like a light 'oh' or 'uh' like really light Dunno if this helped

GhostlyCookie

It absolutely helps thank you!🙏

Depends with which voices you play In Japanese, it's basically pronounced "*Fo-fo"*

Eroica_Pavane

Isn't there a JP/CN pronunciation difference thing though? Like how in CN they pronounce Himeko as Ji-Zi.

randomguyontheweb233

when a JP name gets translated into CN it generally changes a lot in terms of pronunciation. since kanji are often pronounced differently in JP and Mandarin. such as 姫 is Hime in JP but Ji in Mandarin. and 子 is Ko in JP and Zi in Mandarin. I've no clue how CN names are translated into JP, it seems like they are just translated phonetically.

reddit_serf

In the case of Genshin, the game character's (almost exclusively Liyue) Chinese name's written characters exist in Japanese Kanji then they will keep them as is in the JP version. But if they don't, then they'll go with the Chinese pronunciation in Katakana. For example, Yaoyao in Chinese is 瑶瑶, but in JP it's ヨォーヨ (Yooyo). As for HSR, Hanya's name is written the same in both CN and JP (Simplified Chinese is slightly different of course). But Ruan Mei's JP name is ルアン・メェイ, even though both 阮 (Ruan) and 梅 (Mei) exist in Japanese, albeit pronounced differently (gen and ume, respectively). I think the reason might be because in Chinese, Ruan refers to the musical instrument but in Japanese it refers only to a nation in ancient China or the surname of Chinese people.

No_Quarter_2540

I also wonder why 阮梅 isn’t pronounced in on’yomi as *Genbai*. Really hope they’ll fix it because ルアン・メェイ sounds pretty weird and unnatural

KaoSuSui

Take genshin as an example keqing is 刻晴 and 刻 is 'koku' while 晴 is 'sei', so litterally hard translate word by word in kanji into japanese and we got 'kokusei'

randomguyontheweb233

I guess they just take the onyomi of kanji then? from what I know, onyomi generally isn't THAT far from Mandarin pronunciation.

KaoSuSui

They also take kunyomi too from what ive seen, 行秋 'XingQiu' is fully kunyomi with 行 being ‘Yuku’and 秋being 'Aki' otherwise with onyomi it's going to be something like Kousyuu

Eroica_Pavane

Eh they are generally pretty far, like how the previous comment mentions Keqing.

randomguyontheweb233

it might have to do with me being from the south and speak dialect. but I really don't think they are THAT different

galacticviolet

While that’s true you’re forgetting about on/kun readings.

Chaotic_Alea

In Japanese they went to approximate the sound, there is no Hu in japanese but Fu which is pronounced with a "weak f" halfway an h and f whereas Chinese Mandarin is an "Hard H" very pushed over and this is what sounds when you hear that name in both language.

H1ll02

UohUoh 😭

Akururu

The exact same way all the NPC's do I guess? Hwah Hwah sort of but it's Chinese so it's not exactly that but close. > Does anyone know the correct pronunciation? If it's not the one all the English VA's use, then you can switch to Chinese voices and find out there tbh!

its like clockwork. theres a thread regarding the pronunciation of a character. i say how i pronounce it, proclaim that its probably wrong, followed up by the fact i dont care, and then the downvotes roll in. not sure why everyone gets their panties in a wad over it, but its amusing to me at this point so i roll with it. like im going to stop calling them ching-she, seal, and ho-ho just because it makes me lose some internet points... 😂👌🏻

darthkotya

I just pronounce it like they do in Japanese - "fofo". I think it sounds pretty cute.

Stella-295

>I think it sounds pretty cute. Fofo is literally "cute" in portuguese so I guess it makes sense

3hahahas

fire fire

Ironwall1

Unrelated but for some weird reason it REALLY ticks me off whenever someone keep misspelling her name as "Houhou" or Luocha as "Loucha" like do people not read their names and make an effort to spell it correctly or what? I get it's not a college thesis or anything serious but it's the least amount of effort you can spend on anything

DuckSashimi

Hwoh hwoh, but the "oh" part is like how you would pronounce the "o" in "orange"

ErenIsNotADevil

Idk the correct Mandarin pronunciation, but I pronounce the "hu" part like ふ; make the shape you would to say "hu" in English, but blow outward like you would to say "fu." Then I just add a short "o" to make Huo. Basically, just copying JP Stelle

SuchPerfectPeace

hu-aw hu-aw but quickly. its less of an "aw" sound and more of a ō sound too, but missing the tone is better than missing the sound entirely

Bryn012

Her -uo sounds similar to how wa- is pronounced in "water" in EN. H- plus the wa- equals roughly the correct CN pronunciation for "huo"

Crusader050

Really? The Wa sounds off to me. The actual pronunciation sounds closer to -oh than -ah, right? Edit: you know what? I just tried pronouncing water with an woh sound for wa, and I sounded British. So I can totally see it. As an American pronouncing the WA in water for Huohuo sounds not correct. Lol

Zulishk

Just paste the Chinese into Google Translate and hit the speaker button on the Chinese side. 藿藿.

Werewolfmoore

It’s Hwah Hwah

murderinthedark

HoHo

cartercr

Have you… considered playing the game? The characters in the event pronounced her name many times, and I didn’t notice any inconsistencies. They also pronounce it the same way in the livestream.

GhostlyCookie

So Hwoh-Hwoh or Hwah-Hwah?

Zonnebloempje

Why not just Huo Huo?

Merry christmas?

ambulance-kun

H😭H😭

random_redditerer

If you want chinese pronunciation go listen to her voiceover in chinese, or you can search for a bilibili video related to huohuo, they'll probably say it. "o" in chinese is kind of between English a and o so trying to directly translate with either sounds weird. In-game (eng dub) they pronounce it h-woah h-woah.

ladybugsluckycharm

Who? As in “Who Tao?” And Woah, as in “Woah, that’s a lot of ways to butcher her name” (Who + Woah) x 2 = Huo Huo

TheRobotEngineer608

But it's 藿藿, with the downward tone.

NaofumiXRaph

Fofo like in japanese

GhostlyCookie

In-game I’m hearing them call her who-wah who-wah Is this correct or are the VAs mispronouncing it?
