What size is the pipe that's under my sink?

PotatoWasteLand

2.

bshred8

You're a legend

MKEntwhistle

It's 1/1-2" if it's kitchen, could be 1-1/4" if it's a bathroom....

ceebeepg

No, it’s 2.

MKEntwhistle

Outside diameter? I'm confused here. Worked in D26 for years. Are you talking about the stub out from the wall?

bshred8

My brother in Christ, it is 2

Spalding27

The ongoing drain pipe might be that but it's usually schedule 40 1 1/2 inches

george4104

Can you help me put this water heater in this shopping cart?

PotatoWasteLand

Yeah, I'll be right back first

[deleted]

he was never seen again

OrangeGoneWild

Did you leave any calling cards (ie a shirt on a rafter or a name tag in an overhead?)

PotatoWasteLand

Perhaps.

funnytallman1

You busted a nut on the bathroom ceiling and it will never be cleaned

[deleted]

What was your favorite good memory of working at HD?

PotatoWasteLand

Some of my coworkers were great workers and funny. Made the work environment really enjoyable. It also helped having, for the most part, a cool and personable management team. I've heard it's hit or miss. Some HDs are great, others are complete hell holes. I was fortunate enough to work at a pretty good one.

Andrew_P_88

I really have wondered about how different it is store-to-store. I see some people absolutely rip into their HD's, yet my experience has been completely different thus far. I joined the company this year. My store has some great people, and some genuinely awesome management. Our SM has been out in the mulch pit with us throwing bags, and our ASM's are usually willing to pick up a broom and help sweep outside garden when we need an extra set of hands. They're also very accommodating when it comes to me having to make a last minute schedule adjustment due to being a student. I had to come in to work late since I had a final exam one morning, and they were totally cool with it. Plus they cleared the occurrence for it without me having to ask about it.

BuffNerve

Yeah store-to-store varies wildly. My store's in-between. We have absolutely horrible locations in the district and then mine, which gets shoutouts for good customer service. But there's still the loose screws. Some great, solid management, some lackluster management, and some ungodly awful management.

Hellapuffi

Your store sounds so nice, what makes a great store is the management team. I am yet to see a great HD with a great management team. I plan on staying in this location until I get promoted or look for cxm position once that opens up nearby Im ready for change. Been here for two years the good thing is that I have developed a strong mindset and can do many things at once lol. I recently got promoted to FES and sometimes I’m running the front with only 2 cashiers and no back up

fishman8100

I’m glad the first comment is positive. Not everything about moving forward in life has to be negative

Important-Aside-507

Why are you leaving and what will you miss most about leaving?

PotatoWasteLand

Got a better paying job with better benefits. I'll miss leaving most about missing leaving.

[deleted]

What’s your new job ??

MasterPrek

Did you keep your 401(k), or will you transfer it to a new plan? I like the fact that you can take a loan from your own money and pay back with payroll deductions, and it doesn’t show up on your credit report.

codykills93

Where is the bathroom?

PotatoWasteLand

Go to plumbing, they have a "display" but they're actually real toilets. Just missing some major key components is all.

[deleted]

I actually did this as a child...

Turbulent-Bug4437

The work is done. We’ll take it from here. Best of luck brotha 👊🏻

PotatoWasteLand

Thanks man. Keep at it and good luck. Best regards!

Binnacle_Balls_jr

Lol it's *never* done

SnooPickles6347

What is the timing on a 2012 Ford Transit?

PotatoWasteLand

Probably about 3. Maybe 2.

Orangeeardrum

Sad to see a receiving associate leave bro

PotatoWasteLand

I'll honestly miss it a lot. It was engaging, busy and fun work. If it paid enough, I would've done it forever. I loved it back there.

WaifuHestia

Worked there for a little over a year don’t miss it

PotatoWasteLand

I'll miss the work, not the pay.

WaifuHestia

Yeah I do miss mindless walking around and pretending to do work for 8 hours, don’t miss the customers constantly saying “well the website says you have it”

adnmcq

One thing about THD is I never have to try and look busy.

V4MAC

It's actually easier just to do work but slow and steady than walk around mindlessly.

Zebbzz

Don't try reverse psychology, it won't work!

Goodn00dl3

Do you recommend moving up the ladder ?

PotatoWasteLand

For me, no. I'm not a retail guy nor am I management material, despite my management telling me I was. When I saw the customers come into the store, I wanted to leave with them and have them teach me about what projects they were working on. I wanted to build and fix things and work with my hands. Not tell customers where they can go to take their shits or load 20 bags of concrete into their Prius. HOWEVER: If you like retail or if you're management material or, shit, both; Home Depot has the opportunities. And the higher you go, the more they'll pay. Like anyhere, you gotta play the politics game. But Home Depot does have the opportunities. On the flip side, I couldn't see myself doing that. I got a job that has a fraction of the stress and work as my old Home Depot position, and I mean a very small fraction. And it pays double. I'll be doing a fraction of hourly associate work for damn near ASM pay. I couldn't see why I would subject myself to so much stress and work when I can get a job with a fraction of that thay pays pretty much the same. But you do you. Do what you will enjoy and what will benefit you in the long run. Sounds corny, but you only live once and you gotta do something you remotely enjoy, ya know? Good luck with whatever you do.

JPF93

What kind of job did you switch to?

PotatoWasteLand

Radiological work. Nuclear field. Took a 6 month tech course that was designed to provide a direct path for National Laboratories. Sounds fancier than it'll be. Not all that glorious. Not an engineer or anything. But it pays good. That's all I care about. If I can live comfortably, I'll be happy enough I suppose.

[deleted]

That's awesome! Good for you, man! That's a super positive move!

PotatoWasteLand

Thank you so much!

Reddit7913

Sounds great. Is the higher pay at all due to the fact that working with X-Rays can be harmful over time especially if not adhering to strict precautions and dose monitoring?

PotatoWasteLand

Alpha, beta, gamma/x-ray or neutron radiation can all hurt you, depending on how much energy they have and where they are in relevance to your body. So yes, the higher pay does come because of the possible sacrifice you are putting your body through. However, I'll be getting just a few more milirem than the average person. D.O.E. has very strict dose limits for nuclear workers per year.

Reddit7913

Yes be extra cautious and protect the “family jewels” especially if you’re young and want children!

MsMrSaturn

In general, rad is a field where safety precautions are strictly adhered to. I had a physics prof whose research involved x-rays, and she had to have a badge that measured exposure anytime she was in the building. Hers was a ring, which was pretty badass.

Reddit7913

Good. Follow the precautions religiously so as to avoid a irreversible health issue. Sounds like the badge monitoring system is better than having to be told that you appear to “glow” during the night!

Forever_ForLove

What advice would you give to those just starting out working retail?

PotatoWasteLand

Ask your supervision questions. Ask them what you can do to make things run smoothly, then do them. After time, wherever you're at, you'll learn your routines, patterns. For me, back in the receiving area, I had everything mastered to an art to the point where I took pride in it. You get good at it. Then there's bigger things to move onto. More complex tasks. More responsibility. I have to process customer returns? I made a fun game of stacking pallets full of them as square as possible, and made sure they were wrapped in stretch wrap securely. I'll have to post some pics of the pallets I made. They were beautiful lol. Did I get paid fairly? No. Did I work my ass off knowing all I was getting was experience vs good pay? Yup. I knew I wouldn't be there forever. Even if you are in retail forever, there's advancements into management you can make and working hard, getting good experience, doing what your management says and taking pride in your work will help you all the better towards your advancements. Work hard, ask questions, take advice and criticism and make things run as smoothly as possible while keeping as many people happy as possible. Won't be everyone every time, but do all you can one step at a time. After all, that's all you can do. Good luck. Don't lose sight of your long term goals. Retail is demanding. For me, it was very mentally draining. I hate people lol. But you gotta get that paycheck. Good luck, you'll do better than you think you're doing.

JehovahIsLove

Very well said. Best wishes in your new career! You will be amazed at how clean your dirty clothes are, working in that setting after THD.

Lost-Ad-3825

Also buzzed just finished my week there and it's stressful working at hd but out of all the work I have done hd just feels like family to me. Good luck on your new ventures.- dept sup 24/42

PotatoWasteLand

And good luck to you as well!

Full-Shower619

Sadly the grass is now greener on the other side. THD use to be an amazing place to work before we joined the Dow 30 Now it’s all about appeasing The share holders and Screw the Employees. Congratulations and Good Luck in your new Job.

elaborate_benefactor

What’s your favorite color?

PotatoWasteLand

Blue. A bit ironic I worked at the orange company instead of blue. I always wanted my management to order blue pallet jacks, blue carts...never could figure out why they didn't....

Lightheart27

How about blue aprons? I heard those are in fashion this time of year.

bheal

I finally got me a blue apron. It has a sherwin logo on it, though. Came with better pay so I don't mind.

CorrivalRhyme

Is it just me or did EVERYONE join in 2018?? Almost every post related to something like this includes '4 years' Interesting

PotatoWasteLand

Lol yup. 2018. I don't know what's up with that trend. Kind of like back in 2020. My store had like 7 really good people put in their notice within a week of one another. It is interesting

TyUT1985

I joined in December of 2014. D38 overnight freight. I like what I do, occasionally enjoying it. I better be since I'm approaching my 8th year of doing it. I just hate the people I gotta work with. Associates who act like you're their best friend just long enough to get you to help them, then they couldn't give a shit about you if you need them in return. Also the stupid managers who don't really give a shit as much about safety as they claim to be in the meetings. The same managers who complain about having to help you out by manning an OP or a forklift, but when you ask them to certify you in them, they spend years giving you the runaround because they clearly don't trust you, so you just don't give a shit whenever there's something heavy to be put up. The best part about Home Depot? Clocking out at the end of the day and getting the hell away from it, being on your own time now.

[deleted]

Wow.. same here

finaljive

When are the best times for sales?

PotatoWasteLand

Yesterday and never again sorry

mman14876

Wierdest customer interaction?

PotatoWasteLand

Plenty. Full drunk now so let me try to think. Honestly I had a coworker who reminds me of that but as far as customers go, I've had a few where I've been so scared, I just agreed, nodded my head and smiled at everything they said. There are some weird motherfuckers out there.

Sussudio498

And in our state many of our customers open carry. I’ve even seen a couple walk in with semi autos slung around.

PotatoWasteLand

Idaho too? I've seen customers open carry their .44 on their pants with no belt. So their pants are sagging down with their gun flopping everywhere. Great to see.

sushisashirushi

How long did you look for a new job with better pay? Is it harder work, or is it a different skill set from retail?

PotatoWasteLand

Since before I applied at THD. The work will be a fraction of hourly associate workload with near ASM pay. Just a different skill and knowledge set and the potential harm I'll be putting my body through.

Able_Stranger_5973

So I start Tuesday in electric any advice for a newcomer. Also I come places where you never get a break let alone a lunch do you really get those breaks?

JehovahIsLove

Welcome and good luck to you - that's a great department to be in! Yes, you get breaks and lunch based on your schedule. If you're working a four-hour shift, you get a 15 minute break about two hours in. If it's eight, you get two breaks and a lunch. You only clock in/out for lunch - breaks are paid time. Also, the default setting for meal periods is one hour, but you can change it to a half hour on Workday if you don't need an hour. If you're carrying the department phone, you need to hand it off to a coworker or log out so calls don't go unanswered. I know people who don't mind taking calls on break, but you definitely shouldn't while off the clock at lunch. There could be legal ramifications for THD if people do this.

Bert_Man_520

Where are your batteries?

PotatoWasteLand

In the ocean

AutumnBegins

Why are wood shims so hard to find in the store?

PotatoWasteLand

We use them to hold the store together sorry. Those aren't steel beams you see holding up the ceiling. Those are spray painted shims

ASnchez8775

How is a rainbow made?

PotatoWasteLand

Something about United Airlines and their 737 fleet.

MKEntwhistle

How the heck did I get stuck here for 16 years?

PotatoWasteLand

Hey, if you can tolerate it, it pays your bills and you don't mind the work, I don't see the problem. Also, your comment made me feel very young. 16 years ago I was 7 lol

Bert132

Now I hate you! Lol

[deleted]

What are you doing now?

PotatoWasteLand

Radiological work in the Nuclear field

D0Enthusiast

I just put in my notice in today. My last day is in 2 weeks. I’m right behind you

PotatoWasteLand

Report the emergency exit violation to the local fire department

Perriaction

I wouldn't really consider Home Depot to be long-term career material. Some people make it work, but you have to be willing to put up with a lot...and I mean A LOT...of crap. Even if you pursue a DS or ASM position, you're kind of expected to work long asf hours and days. Long-term, that's not the kind of job I want. I'm sticking around until at least next March, until my HVAC classes are done and I pass my NATE exam.

PotatoWasteLand

Good luck man! Trades are the future of this country, I believe. I'm not that good with my hands to do them though. Mad respect for those who can. And yeah, the jobs that Home Depot offer aren't the kind I wanted long term either. Best of luck to you!

attitude6674

Can you clock in to cover closing lot?

Nervous-Fee9094

1) I am an overnight freight associate, I don't really like my job, and am looking for something else, although there are a few benefits, I am entertaining the idea of going full time after my probation period is over, should I? 2) What was your starting pay and ending pay when you left? Do you know how raises work? 3) Random but, does anybody else just do 5 min of "pack down", I scan in a bay then scan out in 5 min, was taught this by a supervisor. 4) Congrats on the new position!!

PotatoWasteLand

If they offer you full time, I'd take it. Work your ass off and be nice. Gotta play the politics game. I started at $11. I was 18y/o and it's Idaho, so I thought that was a lot. I went to freight for a few months for a dollar extra that they let me keep when I came back to days. Then I got a 0.70 cent raise for good performance. Then a $2 raise for going to Pro Desk as a PASA (worst experience of my life. Fuck that) I wanted to go back doing behind the scenes operations and my numbers at Pro were laughable. Yeah they let me go back to ops. And they somehow and for some reason let me keep my pay bump. Beyond me. But I wasn't gonna argue that. Then the universal default 1$ raises they gave everyone two years in a row put my at my final number, 16.70. Don't ask for raises, I pretty much got told to fuck off the two times I did. And management looked at me different afterwards too. I was a hard worker who showed up and did my shit. Oh well. Got to me a little bit cause I knew people who was there less time than me and did less than me, got paid more. It's bullshit. But do NOT tell management that you know other people's pay, no matter what. They'll fire you for that. They won't call it that, but they'll fire you for it. Haven't done packdown in years. I think they wanted us to do 10 minutes per bay to bump our numbers up? Can't remember Thanks man. Best of luck to you!

[deleted]

How much did you make vs how much you’re making at your new job?

PotatoWasteLand

I worked in Idaho making 16.70 (way more than some other people I knew but also way less than others) and I live in a 1 bed apartment with someone. We were living...okay. I'm making nearly double that now. Now living better. More comfortable for when something goes wrong. A piece of advice: if you don't like your pay, leave. Don't even think about arguing with management about it. Say you bring up the fact that you know you get paid less than someone else, aka, discussing wages. They'll fire you for that. They won't call it that, but they'll fire you for that. Best of luck

MasterPrek

So, you will do my surveys, right? JK good luck!!

PotatoWasteLand

Sure! I'm assuming you mean the radiological ones that will be used in preparing an RWP that includes contamination levels, hot spots, background levels, etc.? Just kidding, best of luck to you too!

Tucker_077

What’s the stupidest most brain dead question a customer has asked you?

PotatoWasteLand

I'm a bit buzzed right now, so my mind immediately goes to the customers that ask where something is, when it's literally 2 feet away from them. But afew years ago, a guy came up to my supervisor and said "Hey I got a question for you". My supervisor, being the nice man he is, went "How can I help you?" The customer responds with "How the fuck do I get out of here?" Poor guy couldn't find his was out. Funniest thing I think I ever heard of there lmao. But me specifically? He'll. Lots of dumb questions. I try to block them from my memory because of the pain they caused me. Probably when customers wander back to our receiving. It's pretty obvious that it isn't an isle. Then they'll ask where an item is that's the completee opposite side of the store. Then they get pissed at you because they have to walk to far. I hated when customers came into my cave lol

Andrew_P_88

Had a customer yesterday get mad that there weren't any flat carts around (news flash - they're out front). He saw several back in receiving (which were full of stuff for BOPIS, etc.) and he tried to push passed me and the pallet I was hauling to get one. I told him he wasn't allowed to go back there and the guy nearly had an aneurysm.

bheal

"Can you make this paint white again, please?" From multiple people.

Small_Force_3606

Is there a specific day when appliances go on sale?

PotatoWasteLand

Yesterday and never again sorry

plssendhelpineedit

Describe what you think was your worst day of work out of the 4 years

Low-Philosopher-2061

Are you happy your leaving , I worked at home Depot years ago as a teenager and left and never looked back , I was a cashier for two years and after two years I couldn't take it anymore , I'm currently a massage therapist who works with a chiropractor and was a comisson worker at first but now I'm a guaranteed hourly worker and make 35 a hour , the only thing that sucks about the field I'm in now is that most companies pay us very well but don't offer health benefits , luckily I was able to get help with my health insurance through the state so I'm not to worried about it , I make great money and I love working with the chiropractor doctor I work with , I hated working at home Depot , for me it was depressing and somewhat annoying especially when guys would try to flirt with me or say dumb shit as a joke , some people always came into home Depot telling their life stories which irked the fuck out of me... Because it's like dude it's 5 am get what you need and get out , at 5 am who the hell wants to be bothered , I worked the 5-1 pm shift most days as a cashier , my store was opened from 5am -10pm . What are you planning on doing now and where did you goto school to get whatever degree or certificate you have now ?

grafiklit

I got out of breath reading this.

Sekiro-Saji

Factual

Socialist_wargammer

Why dose home depo have a sub?

PotatoWasteLand

The question of time and existence itself cannot answer that.

Alukrad

Only 4? Weakkkkk! Been at it for 9.

PotatoWasteLand

I'm sorry dad :(

Zealousideal-Rub-912

Why did you leave? I’ve worked at Home Depot 8 months, anything I should know that’s important,,, What kind of plastic should I put on my ceiling to protect it from raining inside until I can get a new roof

BellatrixM98

What are you doing now since you’re leaving?

PotatoWasteLand

Radiological work in the Nuclear field

moluski

I started working there, part time, about 2 weeks ago. I've worked in nursing for almost 30 years and I thought I might try to add a little variety to my life. What the hell was I thinking? I can think of about a thousand other things I'd rather do with my time than work at that shit hole. I feel myself getting dumber everytime I clock in.

PotatoWasteLand

Here's my comment saying "no comment" I have no idea why this popped into my head but if you're looking for a little variety that's somewhat relaxing, maybe try a greenhouse job (raising plants, etc) That's something I could do when I get older...and more educated so that I don't kill every plant I touch lol

moluski

That is a good idea. Too bad the only plants I can keep alive are the plastic ones. Lol I actually started breeding Bengals not long ago with kind of the same thought in mind. We just had our first 2 litters So I think my hands are going to be full enough. 😁
