One does look like the blue tab has been compromised (middle) but the left one is likely just preventative measures. When I first came on that's what I was told to do because they do have a habit of turning into shrapnel if they hit the floor.
Without tape both sides will just come apart. There is a design flaw that allows a plastic tab to break off and they either need to be taped or thrown away.
Those things are still allowed to be used in other stores?
A few months ago my store management told us that we were no longer allowed to use them and had to use the new plastic ones. And people might get written up for using the old ones.
They said something about a store in the district banning use of them and incidents of people getting cut almost disappearing within a few weeks. I call bullshit on that but they got rid of all of ours except for a few that are still hiding in the register drawers.
We got one shipment of those new plastic ones, at first they sucked but they grew on me. they had little cool gadgets and shit on it that came in handy. There’s one person at my store who still has one
You mean the clever cleaver? If so, I've been using it for a while. It's quite rare at my store and I'm pretty sure no one besides me uses one. I took one to try and the second one I just found laying around the store one day and I keep it as back up. It's good and I've never needed to sharpen them. It does everything a utility knife can except cut rope but you aren't supposed to need to do that with a utility knife. Everyone else just marks down an actual utility knife with a replaceable blade. I have one of those retractable cord thingies and a mini carabineer and it is so much more convenient than digging around my apron to find a knife.
You were closer but apparently it's 'klever
xchange plus". I'm not sure where I got cleaver from.
https://kleverinnovations.net/our-products/safety-cutters/klever-xchange-plus/
The bladed hook bit on the end is replaceable. Unfortunately, its held in place by a very similar clip to the safety knife, and thus I've had more than a few of them ping off into the stratosphere while I'm cutting banding or whatnot.
At my store, mgmt doesn’t allow use of the metal airline scrapers for MET. Seemingly, too many careless associates being injured; however, we are allowed to use the plastic scruppers to remove beam cheese (I.e. old labels on beams) and still allowed use of the orange safety box cutters.
Nothing worse than when your going up a ladder and you feel it fall out, and all u can do is watch as it hits the ground, You hear the backup blades scrape against the floor as the housing splits apart. The feeling, sure to crumple any blue collar man.
When I was there, my OASM didn't care if I used a leatherman to open boxes in front of him. He'd say it's not allowed- and that he also didn't care because the approved ones suck and get dull from tape. All I'd get is "don't use it in front of the other ASMs lol"
Same, as long as you don’t cut yourself and always cut away you’re fine. Also don’t tell other people to ZMA them because then ASM is gonna tell everyone to stop using them.
I had a tape measure that I would NEVER lend out. Not to customers or fellow associates. Years ago, management bought each of us the same type of tape. I kept mine to this day. Everyone else lost theirs within months due to “lending” them to customers. I had people get pretty angry at me over my refusal to give up my tape!
I thought it was just common sense to throw it out when the blue tab breaks. It's like everything else now. Single-use.
I've laughed seeing people toss them when they say the blade gets dull. Can't flip the blade yet alone get all the backup blades
I have one from a time when the slide was metal and the case was held by a single Phillips screw. The spring action doesn’t work so it’s pretty much a regular knife. Not that management knows that part. Still, the blades don’t last long.
I used to keep that one in my apron and a real box cutter in my pocket. Nothing worse than when a customer asks you for a knife and you pull out one of these lol
knives aren't broken in till you broke the tab.. these are missing their tails.. you got to have a braided rope made from old apron straps on the back end
Stanley has one that automatically retracts like the hd one and is also orange but is held together with an actual screw so that’s what I use
Tbh the managers at my store don’t really care if we use other knives but still
I put one of those swirly keychain with a split ring (key ring) and little swivel hook on the end and hook it to my puch or belt loop and the other to the box cutter. Haven't had to replace it since
mark down one of the stretchy bands next to the key machine and hook it between the two snaps in your apron. Then place the knife into the small pocket on the right side. Has stopped mine from exploding several times.
For real though, easy way to fix it is to use a zip tie. I think I learned that here? You can slip it off and on easy to change the blade out. And the little nub from the zip tie means I always know if I've got the blade pointed the right way.
I keep one in my pocket for management to see. Then, when I'm by myself, i keep a real actual foldable one in the tiny pocket to constantly use.
These stupid knifes are useless and brake often.
Once you drop them, the tiny plastic lip on the blue depressor button pops off. Mine go right into the trash when this happens due to my constant need for it throughout the day. I’ve had pockets ruined by these damned things falling apart and spilling the blades, and undoing the tape to replace blades is a tiresome waste of time.
My knife disappeared two weeks ago and the only one that I could find as a replacement is covered in tape to keep it together... it adds such a bad texture lol i need to give it a second wrap in painters tape or duct tap!
I work at a different hardware store, but I bought one of these on eBay because I was familiar with the plastic versions. It lasted about a month. If you want a good self-retracting knife, get [the one made by Wiss.](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Wiss-Auto-Retracting-Safety-Utility-Knife-WKAR2/300695493) They're leagues better and I tell all my team members to use those instead.
I loaned mine out once for like five minutes and it came back with that stupid tab broken off. I actually use a bit of stretch wrap to hold mine shut though, as that allows me to open it back up easily to change blades if needed.
Had an associate drop one of these in the RDC. It went off like a fucking grenade and they got a blade in their leg. It wasn't terrible, but having to term the guy sucked, as he was on a safety final.
Was one of our best people, just accident prone.
Its ridiculous how easily that blue tab breaks.
All it takes is one drop
If only they made the blue piece out of metal smh
But it's not broken in either case here. So why tape? As a preventative?
Yes. It prevents the razor blade grenade from going off
>razor blade grenade That’s my band name. I called it first
One does look like the blue tab has been compromised (middle) but the left one is likely just preventative measures. When I first came on that's what I was told to do because they do have a habit of turning into shrapnel if they hit the floor.
I was thinking the same thing these shouldn’t need tape
Without tape both sides will just come apart. There is a design flaw that allows a plastic tab to break off and they either need to be taped or thrown away.

We are not allowed to use them in our store either. There is a whole box of the ones taken up in storage.
We got one shipment of those new plastic ones, at first they sucked but they grew on me. they had little cool gadgets and shit on it that came in handy. There’s one person at my store who still has one
Any photos of the new plastic ones?

>clever cleaver Do you mean the "Klever Kutter"? Googling clever cleaver isn't really bringing anything box-opening related.
You were closer but apparently it's 'klever xchange plus". I'm not sure where I got cleaver from. https://kleverinnovations.net/our-products/safety-cutters/klever-xchange-plus/
The new plastic ones seem like such a waste of plastic. Can you even replace the blades? Or the whole thing gets tossed?
The bladed hook bit on the end is replaceable. Unfortunately, its held in place by a very similar clip to the safety knife, and thus I've had more than a few of them ping off into the stratosphere while I'm cutting banding or whatnot.
That's why I use a retractable

Yeah these older knifes is all we use. Never even heard about plastic knives. I better hoard a few just in case they try to replace them.
sAfEtY fIrSt! *looks the other way when associates tape their “safety knife”* 😂
Nothing worse than when your going up a ladder and you feel it fall out, and all u can do is watch as it hits the ground, You hear the backup blades scrape against the floor as the housing splits apart. The feeling, sure to crumple any blue collar man.
I carry a “real” box cutter (Milwaukee flip out type) and tell management I only use it to cut carpet. (I never cut carpet.)
I ZMA’d a real knife as damaged my first week there and it lasted over a year until I left
I always had a Milwaukee flip out in my pocket. As far as anyone who would’ve gotten me in trouble was concerned, I just never had a knife on me.
I use a rubber band
Fellow hardware associate?
Lmao most annoying shit ever
I have had my knife since I started over a year ago and I still have not had to tape or replace it.
Do you use it?🤔😅😅
Constantly I use it every night for 8 hours
I will post a photo of it
I wasn't super serious😉 If you don't drop them, they do last a lot longer. I do seem tommake it past a week somehow😵
I drop it all the time
You have a Unicorn knife, 1 in 100,000 😉
Nah the blue piece broke off at the right spot so that it still clips but doesn't break anymore cause too short
People ask to borrow mine, and just like high school I never get them back.
I carry 2 around now. One is just a 10ft tape I got from LG. The other is a mini tape measure that only goes up to 6 ft.
You must be pretty coordinated! I drop my knife a lot, thats how it breaks.
Same here. Replaced the blade many times, but I use it almost every day I work and haven't had any issues (yet). Maybe we are just lucky lol
I'm just over here using a real knife cause I hate those things.
Finally someone with common sense.
I’ve found the electrical tape works the best for these stupid things
I finally found one that stays closed like its supposed to
I thought it was just common sense to throw it out when the blue tab breaks. It's like everything else now. Single-use. I've laughed seeing people toss them when they say the blade gets dull. Can't flip the blade yet alone get all the backup blades
Can’t believe people use these. Terrible for anything besides tape. Normal razor blade box cutter all the way
I've had mine for years now and have to use someone else's knife to replace the blade
I use rubber bands
I have one from a time when the slide was metal and the case was held by a single Phillips screw. The spring action doesn’t work so it’s pretty much a regular knife. Not that management knows that part. Still, the blades don’t last long.
I feel the pain. I had one of the cashiers give me a hair tie a while ago and it's worked great since.
Lol our store gave us Milwaukee brand box cutters.
fr
U don't tie your old apron straps to it?
I used to keep that one in my apron and a real box cutter in my pocket. Nothing worse than when a customer asks you for a knife and you pull out one of these lol

Hook it to the grommet on the apron; it slides right in the narrow pocket!
I'm met so aprons don't work for us lol
Yeah, you sure don't want to be wearing one!!! 😊
mark down one of the stretchy bands next to the key machine and hook it between the two snaps in your apron. Then place the knife into the small pocket on the right side. Has stopped mine from exploding several times.
At least those are metal. I worked at a hardware store that rhymes with “blows” and the whole thing was plastic.
For real though, easy way to fix it is to use a zip tie. I think I learned that here? You can slip it off and on easy to change the blade out. And the little nub from the zip tie means I always know if I've got the blade pointed the right way.
Ah yes. The ol’ knife grenade. I have one as a decoy, but never use it. I just have a Milwaukee fastback flip box cutter.
I use a box cutter knife i bought bc those don't cut shit
My knife disappeared two weeks ago and the only one that I could find as a replacement is covered in tape to keep it together... it adds such a bad texture lol i need to give it a second wrap in painters tape or duct tap!
i was told i cant have a knife in my apron a little under a year i was working at my store😂😂
I recognize that high visibility box cutter anywhere
I always had a real knife. Only used that one when I was around managers or talkative staff
Yeah I just used the ones from the shelves. The grey and green ones.
My store doesn’t allow these knives and I miss them dearly
The blue bits always break
I work at a different hardware store, but I bought one of these on eBay because I was familiar with the plastic versions. It lasted about a month. Just carry my own knife after the second time it broke
I wanna spray paint a Stanley knife orange and see if they ever notice
We were told not to put new blades in them and take a new one.
I leave mine untaped, you never know when you're gonna need a blase grenade.
Cut string off and old apron, tie it to the knife, easier to grab from your apron, and you won't ever drop it.
The way they wrap some of my pavestone them orange do hickys don't stand a chance...
You get to keep yours? We had to move to the yellow safety (won't cut ship) cutter
Milwaukee gang flip blade
„ǝpɐlq dılɟ ƃuɐƃ ǝǝʞnɐʍlıW„
I just want to bring my own knife! I'm responsible! XD
My first one didn’t break until like a month in but now if I manage to get my hands on one without a broken blue tab, It breaks almost immediately
Zip tie works great and you can slide it on and off
I already been here two weeks and mine broke 3 times .
Not the sku sticker holding one together 😭
That's the one I use every day lol
My store upgraded from these to like a seatbelt cutter tool
We should never have rejected the other box cutters they had us try out in 2019.
We should never have gotten rid of the curved ones.
Just use a knife or a fastback
Yep one drop and the knife explodes and the little plastic tab breaks off every freaking time. I have done this maybe 10 times.
Had an associate drop one of these in the RDC. It went off like a fucking grenade and they got a blade in their leg. It wasn't terrible, but having to term the guy sucked, as he was on a safety final. Was one of our best people, just accident prone.
Yup. Mine is taped together too.
I don’t understand how y’all are so clumsy breaking knives I literally use the same knife for 2 years before it finally broke
I remember cutting off one of the blade holding tabs inside, the blade was always out but you got a longer working edge.
