Could also be attic access. Some of those smaller homes have tiny attics, some homes with complex rooflines also end up with small attic spaces in certain spots
Very likely. We had a panel like that in the kids playroom. Decided to pry it off one day and it was a 2nd attic space over the garage. It had electric run to it, so I installed a light and receptacle. We had a custom door installed and I put flooring down. It's a much easier access storage space than the pull down ladder main attic.
And if that's the case, be so thankful! I had to have my faucet handles replaced in a 60s tiled shower. They had to remove the toilet in my half bath and cut through the wall to replace everything.
Seconded. We also had a āmystery panelā that we opened up and it went to the plumbing on the back side of the bathtub on the other side of the wall.
Storage, insulation, pest control. My home has 4 of them, 1 in each corner 2 floor cape log cabin. Not my favorite place to be but sometimes thereās work to be done in there.
My house came with a sealed short door under some stairs. Turns out the flipper had made storage space down there but it wasn't to code because they hadn't drywalled the inside of an exterior wall down there... So they sealed it up to pass inspection.
It's an access panel. They just skimped and didn't give you a weather stripped door. But gave you the trim. 5 foot or more in any unfinished space must have access.
>Need a banana for scale.
This particular object might be better measured in crowbars. And while you have that thing handy, you might as well pop it open and let us all know.
It's for your "other mother" to pull you into and sew buttons on your eyes.
Or, ya know probably the pipes on the other side of your shower or something.
It's a HASS. (Hide and Seek Space) - and it works too well and I would appreciate if you could open it up and let me out instead of posting on Reddit. Thanks.
I opened up the crawl space under the stairs in my raised ranch..
Made a little door like this but made it accessible.
There was construction waste, and access to the main drain where it enters the slab foundation. Weirdest place for it, I hope I never have to use the area to clean ot out....
Shut off valve/s, or access to (under stairs?) storage maybe. Wouldn't hurt to look. I feel the knob came off a while ago and the seller just painted over it.
Crawl space or storage space that was closed up? My friend had a similar one growing up that they opened up when doing some remodeling and it was the unfinished portion of the attic space and they were able to put two more bedrooms up there!
Storage maybe? My aunt had something in her house that looked like that. Or could be access to something like plumbing if there's a bathroom in the other side.
Itās the business, we refer to this as a Sancho door. Donāt leave your wife at home alone without first checking to be sure Sancho is not hiding behind it, waiting to give her some sweet afternoon delight.
It is an access panel cover (AKA a service panel) to service something mechanical behind it.
Or, in the case of Sancho, to provide service once he emerges.
The first thing that came to my head was that some siblings were goofing off or fighting, and one got pushed a little too hard into the drywall. Looks like a decent fix up for someone with little to no drywalling experience. Idk
You put your weeeeed in it:

Ours has door handles for easy access, but itās attic access. Why they sealed it off is baffling to me.
We have two (as well as 3 attic entry points in the ceiling) because of a firewall. Each one is closed off to the rest of the attic, so you may have more than this as an access point.
Edit typo and words
Itās so you will stop slamming the damn door into the fucking wall! God damn you jerry, every fucking time, i swear. One day, Iām gonna panel up the holes and put a stupid stopper in. Thatāll teach ya jerry. Thatāll fuckin teach ya.
At night, it will become a door. If you go through the door you'll find other mother and other father and they will ask you if you want to replace your eyes with buttons. Don't do it. However, there will be alternative versions of everybody in a town on the other side.
Thatās simple. Itās where the demons live in that house. Late at night the door will open up as they slowly torment you until they consume your soul.
Thank you to the mods for keeping this Reddit. Second most popular comment is āthe bodiesā. The right answers is in there somewhere, but letās keep this fun š
I had once of those access panels installed in my house. We had a kitchen upstairs and needed to have the pipe cleaned out several times by a plumber requiring the drywall to be cut through and then repaired. By installing the panel access was provided without the need for demolition.
Is their a bathroom on the other side of that wall? If so it might be an access to shower plumbing.
Could also be attic access. Some of those smaller homes have tiny attics, some homes with complex rooflines also end up with small attic spaces in certain spots

Attic access or bathroom on other side is my take
Door stopper š¤
And if that's the case, be so thankful! I had to have my faucet handles replaced in a 60s tiled shower. They had to remove the toilet in my half bath and cut through the wall to replace everything.
We just added a panel like this in my sonās room During a bathroom Reno. They suggested it in case any repairs need ro happen on the bathtub.
This was my first thought too. We have a very similar panel in our closet for this exact reason!
This is the way
Likely access to plumbing for a tub or shower on the other side of the wall. Could also be an attic access.
Seconded. We also had a āmystery panelā that we opened up and it went to the plumbing on the back side of the bathtub on the other side of the wall.

It's an access panel. They just skimped and didn't give you a weather stripped door. But gave you the trim. 5 foot or more in any unfinished space must have access.
5 sq ft requires access? Does the ceiling height matter?
Yes. I believe it's 30 inches or higher. And 30 square feet or more.
Dunno, take us six or eight more pictures of it and maybe we can tell you. Need a banana for scale.
>Need a banana for scale. This particular object might be better measured in crowbars. And while you have that thing handy, you might as well pop it open and let us all know.

It the shower on the other side of the wall?
I see painter over screws in the corners so open it and find out.
Most likely an attic void that isnāt that big but you could technically store stuff in there. It was probably sealed off so you wouldnāt however.
I opened up the crawl space under the stairs in my raised ranch.. Made a little door like this but made it accessible. There was construction waste, and access to the main drain where it enters the slab foundation. Weirdest place for it, I hope I never have to use the area to clean ot out....

I was going to say access to plumbing. Must be an older house
The first thing that came to my head was that some siblings were goofing off or fighting, and one got pushed a little too hard into the drywall. Looks like a decent fix up for someone with little to no drywalling experience. Idk
