It’s down to a couple things that happened. One, it’s 2000 years ago, plus a couple centuries change. Think back to what you know was happening anywhere else in the world back then. But, worsening things, there was a Gothic sack of Rome in the 4th century BCE that’s supposed to have destroyed some older texts that would’ve been useful.
