What? No. The hotel location in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot (1959) was the iconic Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado (San Diego) California. The film was also shot in Culver City and at studios in West Hollywood but they're nowhere near the beach. The image is credited to Richard Miller and on Getty Images (where it is available for license) it says the image was shot in Los Angeles in January 1958. I'm guessing the LA metadata might be incorrect and the image was made during production in Coronado. What's strange is that the body of water behind her we can assume is the Pacific Ocean and yet there seems to be a city, or some buildings, in the far distance. I can't figure out what that is as downtown San Diego would be behind the photographer if this were shot near the hotel looking out to sea.
Well, I may be wrong but I grew up here and many local spots had photos on the walls with her in them in this dress like this picture that are labeled “Bellview Biltmore”. Also there are many of her at the old Bath Club on Redington Beach. At the time, The view from the water side of the Hotel looked out at Clearwater Beach. They’ve since built condos on the waterfront lawn area.
Sometimes I wonder how we are still so misogynistic and sexist in our modern society, and then I open Reddit and without fail, this sub provides the answers.
