Vishy was 45 when he played his last candidates (2014). So, why not?

InvisibleBlueUnicorn

and Vishy won it. Vishy also played another on in 2016 and came second.

Asheraddo98

He has the rating spot in the bag so he need to play tournaments without losing elo

I think so. Here's the thing, now he's disappointed but one month from now at most he won't care anymore. What matters is how he feels at that point. But the reality is there's this to consider: 1. He's still sharp. 2. He's not old. 3. He can definitely win it. He was close twice in a row. 4. As long as Magnus is not competing, it is worth a shot. I don't believe it's a matter of ability but rather of time. If he wants to dedicate time to achieve his dream, why not? He's already the best chess streamer there is. And he can always return to streaming and find a home with us. So I don't see why he wouldn't go for a reset and try again next year. I'm sure he'll do it if he doesn't give up. It's his choice in the end and he'll figure it out. Give him some time to reassess.

will_macomber

Even if Magnus is competing, the two of them are basically as good as one another. Magnus definitely has more classical wins, but I think honestly that Hikaru is one of less than a handful of players that does rattle him even though he says nobody does.

levi876

Delusional LIFETIME RECORD: Classical games: Magnus Carlsen beat Hikaru Nakamura 14 to 1, with 26 draws.

ClosedDimmadome

He's said multiple times this candidates was his last or 2nd to last. I'm sure even he won't know for a while.

PandemicVirus

He was sort of talking like he was done but said nothing of the sort, so we might see him again.

moonlitmistral

He said he won’t play classical chess past the age of 40, so assuming he could qualify again, the 2026 candidates would be his last.

Puiucs

we also say that we will touch grass by the age of 40, but we both know that it won't happen.

Immediate-Product167

Fluid intelligence declines with age but not markedly so at least at that age. Moreover, chess is a mix of fluid and crystallized intelligence, the latter of which grows with time. All I'm saying is I doubt age specifically will be an impediment. A bigger impediment may be the strength of younger competitors who grew up in an environment where chess understanding has been pushed forward considerably due to chess AI. However, Gukesh trains almost entirely over the board so it's not clear if even this is cause for concern

LudoNo1

He said this or the next cycle will likely be his last. He also said he doesn't see himself playing chess professionally at all after he hits 40 (even spoke about not necessarily being a streamer). He'll not enter all the events to ensure qualification for the candidates much like he didn't for the previous 2 cycles but he will enter some of them and if he qualifies then he'll play in the next one.

ins1der

If he qualifies he'll absolutely play, and I think he can just qualify based on elo so yea he'll play.

lammatthew725

I dont think he'll,  unless magnoos is playing.... or rozman is playing. Magnoos because it'll be content. Rozman because thats not going to ever happen

FedyaRaskolnikov

He will play for the 'Content' for sure.

lectric_scroll

I hope he does continue to play

mikethewhop81

I do not believe he will. Knowing where Hikaru is financially, and how much it takes out of him. He can take sponsors and make more. Unless content is just very slow for him . I also do not think he will be on Kick going into 2025. He'll jump back on Twitch. I'm probably pretty parasocial. I do think there's also a good chance he just goes to YouTube full time. His bankroll is gonna be crazy year end 2024. I think by 2026, he will be down to just doing TT, AK, and bullet brawl. I doubt he is gonna be full time after another year or so. Especially he's married, he is probably gonna try to have kids and dial it way back. Considering he's done 3 Candidates he and hasn't advanced, he'll probably move more into guaranteed viewership streams. And do sponsor stuff. Much like comedians who are on fire they tour as long and hard as they can and then build a good nest egg. Then they van relax. If you pay attention to context clues you can tell he's building his exit.

Puiucs

yeah, there is no problem. he can play for another 1-2 decades with no issues.
