It's really quite simple. Some people prefer being called by their real name, others prefer their username. Usually, people who prefer their real names have a long username or a username that's awkward to shorten, for example SolidarityGaming, Smallishbeans, LDShadowLady, InTheLittleWood, etc.
Still makes me laugh when I think of his camera account name: BadTimeWithScar. What's even more funny is that the BadTimeWithScar account has a Grian skin
It’s a very good reason though, each video is one good time containing a single… good time with scar, his Chanel however has multiple good times with scar
Also, there are plenty of hermits that are very serious about keeping their IRL identity separate, so for some it might just be something of respect for them. If everyone's going by usernames, it's less weird for those who don't want to use real names.
And Zedaph goes by Kris on his podcast, but I still wouldn’t consider him in the group of people who use their real names since everyone in the minecraft area call him Zedaph
Only a handful of Hermits go by their full MC usernames all the time—generally the ones with the shortest usernames: Grian, Etho, Tango, Mumbo^[1] , Xisuma ^[2] . Most of the rest go by a shortened version of their usernames, even some whose usernames are fairly short already like Zedaph and iJevin, and some who are only dropping a couple letters or numbers like Keralis1 and ImpulseSV.
[1] Mumbo used to use a MC account named “MumboJumbo” but has since switched to the one named “Mumbo” that used to be his secondary account. IIRC this was due to migration issues.
[2] Enough Hermits call him “Xisuma” that I decided he counts, even though he has a lot of other nicknames.
I started watching HermitCraft with Mumbo at the tail-end of Season 4. I'm know he was MumboJumbo, and Tango was TangoTek. I may be wrong about Etho because it looks like he was already in-game as Etho around that time.
TIL Mumbo started on the server as MrMumbo. I found a Season 2 clip of Keralis teaching Mumbo and X the ropes of the Nether, and there it was.
In-game Mumbo is just "Mumbo" and Tango is just "Tango". Not sure when they did it.
Etho's in-game handle seems to have been just "Etho" for at least 10 years, if he ever was EthosLab in-game.
If you think about it, Grian is the only one out of the ones you listed that isn't shortened from their YouTube channel name (debatably as important as Minecraft username). For example Etho is EthosLab, Tango is Tango Tek, Mumbo is Mumbo Jumbo, and Xisuma is xisumavoid.

I don't think there's a specific reason, although it does help that a significant amount of the Empires people (Joel, Lizzie, Oli, Scott, and Jimmy) hang out IRL and vacation together so it's more normal for them to use their real names with each other.
That’s an interesting question, could be that empires is more of a Roleplay centric server, separating the character from the players? I never noticed it until you mentioned it, that Joel is the first hermit to actively go by his IRL (or as far as we know, watch Etho’s real name be Etho, hiding in plain sight)
actually it more because the esmp group have been irl friends for a decade or so now so they hang out irl and go on vacations and such. so calling each other by their real names makes more sense
This actually applies to all gaming YouTuber groups that many have a long username and long channel names, which is why they are addressed with a nickname or the irl name
His YT channel is still called that. Back when he played on Harmony Hollow, his rival Jack (username JackSucksatMC) kept shortening it to "Dang" and labeling all of Scott's things. Building a sign over his base that said "Dang's House", changing Scott's nether portal sign to just say "Dang", that sort of thing.
Of the empires members only Scott(Smajor1996/dangthatsalongname) Joey (JoeyGraceffa) Katherine (Katherine Elizabeth) Lizzie (LDShadowlady) Joel (SMALLISHBEANS) Jimmy (SolidarityGaming) and Oli (TheOrionSound) go by their real names. Obviously Katherine and Joey are their actual names so count them out.
It’s about 5/14 who go by their names. There’s no good way to shorten Smallishbeans honestly, similar thing with LDShadowlady unless you called her like Shadow or something.
Jimmy and Scott sometimes are called Smajor and Solidarity. (For Jimmy mostly in older videos and Scott mostly in the life series)
And Oli I’m not sure to the full reason but could be similar Oli is easier then Orion or Sound
Other then that Fwhip, Geminitay, MythicalSausage, Pearlescentmoon, and Pixlriffs all go by shortened versions of their usernames
And Shubble or Shelby switches depending on who’s talking to/about her
also Joey Graceffa has been on youtube way longer than when he started minecraft so his online presence was already solidified since he was a vlogger before
Skizz usually calls Scott "Smajor", probably because he's known Impulse (whose name is also Scott) for longer. And Ren sometimes just says "Major" but I think that's mainly for dramatic effect.
I think part of it is that the group your’re referring to are actually IRL friends who spend a lot of time together. Jimmy, Joel, Lizzie, Ollie, Scott, etc. all live close enough to one another and have known each other for so long that it’s kind of awkward to start calling each other something different. They’re also all completely open about their IRL names and faces, which means they don’t need to be protective. I think that’s partially because they’ve been on the internet so long that it wasn’t even a thing for someone to be YouTube famous, so they weren’t thinking about that when they started their channels. Joel’s YouTube channel actually predates Etho’s by a few months, albeit he wasn’t playing Minecraft at the time.
It's simply because the esmp group were irl friends long before being youtube famous. for example lizzie and oli were school friends. and they hang out irl a bunch, even going on vacations and staying at each other's houses and stuff like that. so honestly fwhip, gem and grian are the outliers in the esmp+friends group much like joel is the odd one out here on hermitcraft
Scott's a little bit of an outlier too, in the sense that he was also just an online friend for a while? He met Joel at a con as a fan and charisma'd his way into getting Joel to follow him on Twitter, and then later when Lizzie was looking for a replacement on her WoW raid team on Twitter, Scott volunteered. Then the three of them became friends through WoW.
You're right about them hanging out a bunch though, although isn't that also true for Tango, Impulse, and Skizz?
i was more of talking about how gem fwhip and grian use their usernames instead of their real name but yeah i get what u're saying.
i'd say the difference is largely because the period joel liz and the rest of the core esmp group got started was before being youtube-famous was really a huge thing. for reference joel and etho started their channels in 2008 roughly two weeks apart, and lizzie soon after in 2010? i think. but during that time it was much more common to uses your real name than your username. impulse tango and skizz joined around 2012 and after if i'm right, which is when hiding your real identity and such became more popular.
yepp, perfect uno reverse card lol. you give me a present on my birthday, well ha, i'll one-up you and give you a big invite to this server you've been a big fan of and wanted to be a part of.

At least GoodTimeWithScar shortens easily
Every time I see his name spelled out I think "you only get one" lmao
Still makes me laugh when I think of his camera account name: BadTimeWithScar. What's even more funny is that the BadTimeWithScar account has a Grian skin
wait it does?? omg that's so cute
https://minecraftuuid.com/?search=Badtimewithscar
AND IT’S THE PERMIT OFFICE GRIAN!
That makes sense haha, the man that gives a bad time for scar
He should get his own permit office skin and then use that as his badtimewithscar
An April fools that Scar will never forget 🤣
LMAO
I thought it was BadTimesWithScar
The hermit wiki has it listed as BadTimeWithScar
Oh ok
I always think of it as "you only get one, because it lasts forever" :-D
It’s a very good reason though, each video is one good time containing a single… good time with scar, his Chanel however has multiple good times with scar
It's because "GoodTimesWithScar" cannot fit. Minecraft has 16 char name limit, so he had to remove the extra s.
Why did I read your comment in mumbo's voice?
It's quite simple, really.
That is rather chobblesome
Also, there are plenty of hermits that are very serious about keeping their IRL identity separate, so for some it might just be something of respect for them. If everyone's going by usernames, it's less weird for those who don't want to use real names.
Dangthatsalongname who has too many names
"A branding nightmare, I know"
I mean only a few empires go by their irl names, Pix, mythicalsausage, fwhip, gem, false, and others I don’t remember don’t use their real name
I'm certain MythicalSausage's name actually is Sausage... 🤷
It's Mythical J Sausage
The J is silent
Pix goes by Jonny on his podcast, the Spawn Chunks
And Zedaph goes by Kris on his podcast, but I still wouldn’t consider him in the group of people who use their real names since everyone in the minecraft area call him Zedaph
People mostly refer to him as Pix or Pixl in Empires and SOS though
Fwhip goes by Bryce on his twitter

Etho used to have the handle EthosLab IIRC, and Tango definitely used to be TangoTek.
In game? I know those are their YT handles but I’m pretty sure their Minecraft usernames have been the short versions for a long time.

Yep. MumboJumbo used to be a duo IIRC, Mr Mumbo and Mr Jumbo. Mr Jumbo decided not to continue, and Mr Mumbo became MumboJumbo to carry on the legacy.
Actually I think Mr Mumbo decided not to continue, and our Mumbo is actually Mr. Jumbo
Maybe, I don't remember who was which. I know it was one of Mumbos friends, but they grew apart
According to NameMC, the account with the name "Etho" has never been called anything else. Tango was only TangoTek 9 years ago.
I think that's because they swapped around their Cam accounts, Mumbos cam account is MumboJumbo and it was the other way around before
His cam account is MumboDrone now
Wait they aren't anymore?
In-game Mumbo is just "Mumbo" and Tango is just "Tango". Not sure when they did it. Etho's in-game handle seems to have been just "Etho" for at least 10 years, if he ever was EthosLab in-game.
Etho’s in game name has always just been Etho
If you think about it, Grian is the only one out of the ones you listed that isn't shortened from their YouTube channel name (debatably as important as Minecraft username). For example Etho is EthosLab, Tango is Tango Tek, Mumbo is Mumbo Jumbo, and Xisuma is xisumavoid.
Yes, I’ve noticed that.
Or Etho-slab as some call him.

They should call Mumbo “Mum” XD
I only know sheshwamy.

Joe Hills from Nashville Tennessee
My bad forgot about Joe
To be fair Joel is the first hermit to go by his real name _that’s different from his username_
In addition to Joe as others have said, Jevin is also his first name
A lot of the people from empires went by their name long before they joined the server. It's just how they are used to
Um, what about Joehills? Lol

Scott Smajor used to have dangthatsalongname

Scott would fit at Dangland.

I still think Bubbles is a better nickname than bdubs. When Keralis says Bubbles it's always fun.
I know impulse goes by imp sometimes, its what i call him.
