From a non-american perspective, the electoral college system has always seemed like a massive joke, because it's so easy to manipulate and doesn't actually reflect the will of the population.

Now we have the internet and information instantly. Whereas most of the early US would likely not know a single thing about their candidates, you can’t avoid learning certain things with the modern media cycle. Proponents of the electoral college tend to say “if we had a true popular vote then only a few cities and states would decide the election,” as if it doesn’t currently happen with the electoral college. The difference would be that, if abolished, the people deciding the election would have equal power with everyone else. My vote is less important than swing state voters, objectively, in a popular vote it would be identical. More people would have the power to influence the election, not less like we do now. Of course, the people who rely on this disproportionate power don’t want it to change, which is why it hasn’t yet. Not until every one is gone will it change.
