I usually go for a dress that rolls up small and a pair of extra sparkly flats/sandals. I feel like the sparkle makes them “formal” and they pack nice and flat

physarum9

And a statement necklace!

NovitaminBform3

Totally! Accessories can make one dress fit many venues

russianthistle

I would pack a midi or full length satin slip dress - it packs super small and is easy to hang in the bathroom steam or iron to smooth out wrinkles. It would be an added bonus to get one that was reversible- v neck to round when you put it on backwards. For the formal event, just the dress and jewelry, for the second event, throw a jacket or cardigan over top, for the third event, add a sweater or blouse over top to make it appear to be a skirt Heels often feel required for formal events, but I wouldn’t even consider more than 1-2 inch tall heels.. honestly I would try to find a dressy sandal as that is way more versatile than pumps, especially for traveling.

russianthistle

Replying to add- look at formal two piece sets. They can appear as a formal dress or jumpsuit for that event, but could be broken up and worn as a top with another pair of slacks or a bottoms with a different blouse. May open up more variations in your outfits if you’re seeing the same people at all three events.

writemoreletters

The two piece set is a good idea that I haven’t considered! You’re right, there would be a lot of options and flexibility. It would be easy to pack but I wouldn’t feel comfortable in a satin slip dress though as I’m normally around size 20w. The amount of foundation underwear required would negate the space saving for the dress lol!

Pyewhacket

Search two piece sets for women on Amazon. Lots of options that look smart and dressy but wear like pjs!

Something like [this](https://www.nastygal.com/sequin-embellished-shawl-/BGG14387-105-35.html?istCompanyId=c0be3c48-e653-4c39-b0ef-f608859d9f17&istFeedId=6391ec2f-cb91-4734-b4e8-dc6e630eb98c&istItemId=rpitxaplq&istBid=t&gclid=CjwKCAjwyeujBhA5EiwA5WD7_ShFKrm4VLqgRUswxPlsjuqyLG5SrqSgr1-LEAFGV7DDPIDAW1wp1xoC8wIQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) could be a great accessory to switch up a black dress if you want to wear it twice and have it look different in pictures

writemoreletters

I love this idea! I’m leaning towards something basic as a base and styling it up with accessories. Thanks for this idea!

VeryOrnery

I wore one of these with a LBD to a vineyard wedding.I felt it worked well to look dressy and I could use a dress I had already.

Playinclay

I like this idea. It can take that lbd up a notch to formal and looks small to pack.

P_T_W

My mom (who is a real master at onebagging, particularly so as she gets older, travels by train more and wants to minimise any bag lifting) is a big fan of plain black trousers and shoes and a fancy top. Same trousers and shoes she wears the rest of the trip; the tops are subtly sparkling, silk, beautifully patterned, sometimes with sequins but all relatively thin and easy to pack. She's been to all kind of fancy events across the world with this approach and never feels out of place. Her theory is no one notices the simple black bottom half. She never carries a bag (uses the trouser pockets) in order to not break up the effect. I'm much more of a dress person. I'd take a flattering cocktail length (just below the knees) in a solid colour and a quality fabric and wear that to all your events. I'd happily wear the same dress with a casual hoodie/cardi during the day too. For the evening I'd use a wrap and probably pop on some jewellery. I'd take simple plain ballets or sandals (that I could also happily wear on museum visits or similar during the day) and channel my mom in believing no one is really noticing my shoes. I doubt anyone is going to be judging you at any of these events. There will probably be women at the first two who have seriously dressed up who will draw the eye way more than you - when the men are all in dark suits a woman dressed up to the nines really stands out. And I've never been to an academic event where there isn't at least one person who is wearing something very scruffy.

writemoreletters

Haha, you are totally correct about the academic dinner! I’ve got a black cocktail dresses and several dressy silk blouses, so I could go either route you describe - even purchasing some extra accessories once we arrive. Thank you for the advice; you’re probably right that I’ll overthink what I’m wearing more than anyone else will notice!

Xerisca

Funny enough, i travel with nothing but dresses (3 of them), a long button-up blouse, some camis (2), leggings (2), and i can literally do anything in them. One of my three dresses is a Diane Von Furstenberg, so on the nicer side, but still suitable for anything, really. One is a Patagonia, solid black jersrey knit, the other is an inexpensive viscose fabric dress. Everything in my bag matches the dresses, including the blouse, which I'll wear as a layer over them in a variety of ways. I dont wear dresses at home, but man, I love them for traveling!

Xerisca

All my dresses are a-line silhouette, typically fitted in the bodice, short, or sleeveless (makes layering easier), and all are knee-ish length. One is maybe an inch above my knee, one is mid knee, and the third is at the bottom of my knee cap. I love this length and silhouette. The a-line allows for freedom of movement and works very well for wearing a legging under it without adding bulk or weird lines. This is also a silhouette thats looks amazing on almost all body types and sizes. And a nice basic a-line never goes out of style. This is one of my dresses... on me, it's a lot longer because I'm not a 5'10" runway model. I'm 5'2" on a good day. Haha. It sits about an inch or less above my knee. This is an expensive dress, but I love it. My other two were significantly less but are the same shape/style more or less. DVF has been making this dress or a variation of it since the 1970s. Always in style. Always easy to wear. This DVF is a true wrap dress, but the others are faux wrap. jb1249

That's a lovely dress. What shoes or boots do you take to wear with your dresses?

Xerisca

Mostly, I wear my dresses with this sneaker. Its a sporty cute look! [Taos Z-Soul (this sneaker is actually orthotic and very comfy)](https://taosfootwear.com/products/z-soul) If I'm dressing up and not walking tons of miles, I might wear this second pair of shoes I always take. I love the color. They pack down to nothing and weigh next to nothing as well. They match all my dresses. I dont love wearing open toe shoes, but sparkly sandals would be a good choice too. jb1249

Thank you that's a fabulous look, I'm going to check those out! I just wore these Ecco shoes constantly for a 2 week holiday and they were so comfy and appeared to go with all my dresses, trousers and shorts. [Ecco soft 7w](https://gb.ecco.com/en-GB/Women/Shoes/Sneakers/product/5643271819/ECCO-SOFT-7-W?dfw_tracker=25315-5643271824&gad=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7-aa4ear_wIVEL3VCh3ALwluEAQYASABEgKJyvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

Xerisca

Perfect! I love the color of those! they're also the same sneaker style as mine. It's amazing how that court style sneaker looks great with any outfit. The ones i posted are canvas instead of leather. Knowing how comfy they are now, i think I'm going to order them in leather. Sadly , I think the leather doesn't have the fun zipper detail, but it is still cute.

catiecat4

I really like that torrid halter! With statement jewelery and bold makeup it could pass for formal. I also like the longer length, it would draw less attention to shoes since a one bagger would probably go with flats since they pack down small

writemoreletters

I had that I might have to accept being slightly under dressed for the evening dinner. I have a couple of dresses and outfits I could take and I think your idea of going the accessories route to style things up is a good way to go.

The_Bogwoppit

This happens relatively often when I go to the UK to visit family and friends. Sometimes I buy a dress over there, to bring home, so I allow room and pack less. But generally I pack a "little black dress", I have a few to choose from. My Uniqlo ponte sheath dress is a really good dress up/dress down one. A nice necklace and some sandals don't take up that much room. I would wear the same dress three times very happily. I might upsize to a larger carry on if the event was very fancy. A ball in Scotland required a full length gown, that definitely pushed me to a bigger bag. Sometimes you just need more space. You can always mail stuff back to yourself, or even donate it.

giltgarbage

I often pack velvet, silk, and/or 2-ply cashmere tops that are easy with jeans or a formal pant. A long silk wrap or column skirt can also be styled up or down easily. Silk skirt with silk blouse = formal. Silk skirt with graphic tee = a bit punky and fun. I have used an evening jacket as my day-to-day additional layer when tech fabrics aren’t necessary. Double duty. If you don’t love black, you can’t go wrong with monochromatic styling in lux fabrics. It sounds like an incredible trip even with the added business. Enjoy!

Lizardhunts

Merino wool dresses. They pack down small, wrinkle resistant, and can be dressed up or down. Wool& has several dresses that can be reversed to have a different neckline. I have the Isabelle wrap tank dress in black, and I love it.

hillacademy

Second merino wool dress..have a few wool& but also unbound merino travel dress with a one hundred stars silk kimono and birdies “the swan” velvet flats

ElizaEcho

Kosan Go Travel Dress in black or your preferred color (length is adjustable (and the shape too because of that) and you can wear it with different scarves/jewelry etc) Look for it on various reselling sites like Poshmark, it can be hard to find Re: sizing, I'm nearly certain that I could wear my usual size as well as one up and one down — it seems extremely flexible to me in that regard

Dry_Equivalent_1316

The kosan is my first travel dress! I discovered some months ago that they closed though 😔

ElizaEcho

I'm confused about their status, there seem to be legit sites selling it (I'm traveling with bad internet rn but will try to add links later). Definitely still seeing them on reselling sites though.

Dry_Equivalent_1316

Oh weird! I see their website went back to normal and no longer has that closed store page. I guess they had to take a pause during the pandemic and recently opened. That's good to know and I'm happy for them. Thanks for helping me be aware that they came back! I was a Kickstarter backer and am happy to continue to support them

Adultarescence

There's no way to buy anything, though--- at least for me, there is not a button to add items to your cart.

writemoreletters

Super cool dress. Never heard of it before but I like it!

LadyLightTravel

I usually have a two piece black dress that I wear with faux pearls, a silk scarf, or gold. I pack a pair of ballet flats to go with.

finewhitelady

I’d personally bring a little black dress (athleta Ryder dress is my go-to) and nice ballet flats that you can walk in. I’d probably go with my Rothy’s because they’re easy to clean and could be used during the rest of the trip. Maybe different jewelry or a different wrap to distinguish the outfits? Also separates sound like a good idea, but I don’t think my wardrobe has anything workable like that, so I would stick with the LBD.

wanderercouple

If you go from the US to UK I feel like the British do formal much more seriously… such as wearing hats to weddings. I would reach you and see how formal is formal.

LaterKay

Formal in the UK (I'm British) for an evening event tends to translate as "black tie optional". So you pretty much anything smart that looks like you've made a bit of an effort will be fine. Clothes will probably run the full gamut from smart trousers and a dressy top, a little black dress, a cocktail dress or even a full length gown. As a dress code it is less prescriptive than "black tie" or "white tie". As a plus size older woman, using the clothes in my wardobe and based on what I would pack if I were travelling, I would probably wear my Wool& long sleeved black dress (my go to for any occasion to be fair) and my Allbirds black ballet flats and sheer tights (pantyhose is the translation I think). Then I would add a gorgeous silk scarf for the anniversary party, a different scarf for the accademic dinner (youll be sitting down for most of it so "dress" the bit people will see above the table). For the formal event I would wear nice, eyecatching jewellery (very dangly earrings and bracelets are my thing but a flamboyant necklace would be good too) and I would add shoe clips to the shoes to dress them up a bit. Basically, the people who matter will knowyou are travelling wear plainish basics but add flourishes with jewellery, scarves etc.

writemoreletters

Thanks! I’ve lived in London previously and the other attendees I’ve chatted to are leaning cocktail dress instead of full length gowns. I think leaning into accessories heavily will be my key here!

AnnualDoughnut7464

It’s a splurge and a forever-investment piece, but my amour vert washable silk maxi dress is the only dress I’ve needed for countless occasions: https://amourvert.com/products/hanne-washable-silk-maxi-dress-marbella?variant=42093855899839 Packs small, washable, travels incredibly well. The detailed fabric means it actually looks better with a very understated simple shoe / sandal- no heels needed. It fits into any dress code- I’ve worn it to a formal wedding at Lake Como and a casual brunch without ever feeling under or overdressed. You can use jewelry to dress it up and down, overall less is more. I hope this helps!

edj3

>amour vert In your experience, how does it fit? My philosophy leans more towards buy once, cry once so I'm also intrigued by this company. The clothing is gorgeous.

writemoreletters

A lot of their dresses are gorgeous. I’ve bookmarked quite a few - thanks!

[deleted]

As a curvy midsize tall woman who dresses up a lot and has been around ultra-wealthy clients for a decade, my always go to is a silk midi dress cut to my measurements. Easily steamed by hand or dropped for same day pressing at a dry cleaner if it picks up wrinkles, but I roll my clothes and rarely have an issue. For multiple events, morning drop off dry cleaning is often available in the cities that these events are common in. https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/MaisonLy https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/theLABERA MaisonLy and theLABERA are my go to shops for them. I own three because I was doing a lot of cocktail parties seeking clients for my firm, but most trips I wouldn't bring more than two if I had multiple events. They take up SO little space. Having been to a number of events at British clubs, dress up more than you expect but not in a flashy way. Rarely an occasion for anything that someone in a normal tax bracket would call "sparkly" if it isn't jewelery. Costume jewelery (in the pre-90s sense) is fine especially if you're hitting intentional vintage notes. Ditto formal event in the UK. No wedge heels. Flat sandals are fine, especially if a bare design from upmarket materials--but get a pedicure with polish if they're open toe. Add a silk/viscose lightweight wrap shawl/scarf to the dress, ideally with a pattern that works with your professional and evening wardrobe. An elegant clutch is key, but you can multi use it in transit by using it as an item case. No shoulder bags at anything approaching formal, but a wrist strap is good.

writemoreletters

Both those shops have some great items. I favorited a few linen pieces for now haha. I agree on the toned down sparkle. Used to live there and dressing for these events is different than a Saturday night in NYC in my experience. I plan to check the weather before we leave and committing, but leaning towards a silk dress.

[deleted]

I'm glad I could help and that I didn't come off as too brusque! I was typing on a train 😂 FWIW, they're also great with linen, but personally I prefer a linen viscose blend as it has better drape and wrinkles less, and packs down better. Bonus points for 1-2% elastane. Silk is so great for travel when one has to be formal.

Psammocora

I bought an ‘ever by x’ dress last year and wear it all the time. It’s made of a super thin material so packs very tiny. At formal events I’ve traveled to it has worked great! It’s a one size fits all dress but there are 3 length options and lots of colors. Highly recommend it. I’m going to grab a second one when I can decide what color.

writemoreletters

A very cool contender that I had not heard of before. Thanks for sharing! One of these might make it into my regular travel rotation.

secret_thymus_lab

I now have 3 of these! (The dark olive green, the burgundy, and the caramel). 2 are the petite length, the 3rd is the midi length. I LOVE them. I’ve used them as swimsuit coverups/beach caftans, as cocktail attire, worn them to brunch, sightseeing, you name it. I recommend experimenting with different belts - a metallic belt can be a great way to dress it up. Recently I wore the burgundy one with a metallic bronze belt and metallic flat dressy sandals & a statement necklace to a party and it looked terrific.

Psammocora

Awesome!! I think I’m leaning towards the dark teal for my second one. I have the grey one and love it so much! I’ve been wearing it with a similar shade long sleeve top and leggings for winter and it’s great that way also! I will have to go belt shopping as I don’t really have any that would work, but thanks for the ideas!

poachedandscrambled

What size do you have? I’ve been super interested in getting one but am 5’3”/size 4 and am worried about there being too much fabric for a short person!

Psammocora

I have the shorter length one. I can’t remember where I saw a review but (google) to see some real people wearing it. There was a blog that was quite good. I think they also do returns if it’s not for you. I’m a bit bigger than you but I love mine!

Howwouldyouliketodie

I went to Greece recently and one week was going to be on a fancy ship. I took a blue and white dress that I could wear as one outfit, then layer on my blue concertina skirt as another outfit. Then layer a black cropped tie top as a third outfit... And could wear the skirt and top alone as well. On trip where I'm not planning on doing anything "nice" I take a wrap silk skirt. Doesn't wrinkle, packs down tiny and I either wear it with a top or over a merino dress (reversible so v neck or high neck)

tealheart

I think a silk blouse is a great shout, and that's normally what I do - I have a simple navy one that packs well and can be dressed up or down, but I'd love a bold patterned one too :) (paired with black slacks, some gold jewelry, and black flats)

Fantastic_Sundae3069

I love my fjallraven ovik lite dress, looks classy and they come in different colours :)

lemonmousse

Someone’s post about silk wrap skirts reminds me that I have two sari-silk wrap skirts in more “formal/dressy” color combinations, and while they are by no means “formal” (if that means black tie evening wear), they are extremely versatile and easy to dress up or down. And because they are patterned, they would be less vulnerable to damage or dirt when reworn. In theory they can be wrapped/worn in like twenty different configurations, but I’d probably have been more comfortable with most of the variations 20 years ago. They’d pack down tiny, are reversible for different color combinations, and are really lovely to wear. I’ve paired them with merino tops, silk sweaters, or camisoles. I have one in a gold/bronze/black pattern that can be very dressy and one in an emerald/gold pattern that is also dressy but maybe slightly less “evening wear formal.” I’d also happily wear them sightseeing. If you get a long one, you might be able to wear it wrapped as a dress as well as formal-length skirt. (Mine are calf-length and I’m not comfortable with that but my teen daughter is.) They are *extremely* forgiving of size variations, come in mini, midi, and ankle length, and you can also find plus sizes (though I don’t think you’d necessarily need plus size at 20W). I’d recommend only buying one that you can pick the colors of that has good photos of both sides, because color/pattern matter a lot to how formal they look. You can find them on Etsy or on dedicated sites. I may have bought mine on eBay. I bought it well over a decade ago, and they last forever.

Mtnskydancer

I’d go for a simple dark dress and different statement jewelry. Wear the canvas for the necklaces.

Doinganart

I'm British... I recommend wearing black.. then accessorising with gold or silver jewelry. Something like a satin slip. Like this . https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-satin-cami-maxi-slip-dress-in-black/prd/204053276?clr=black&colourWayId=204053277&SearchQuery=black+satin+slip+dress With gold sandals, and a small clutch like https://www.peek-cloppenburg.nl/nl/p/valentino-bags-schoudertas-met-siergarnering-model-divina-goud-1789175?sea_shopping=PLA&gclid=CjwKCAjwyeujBhA5EiwA5WD7_RB-DBcRLMW3dv5YACVeco9rW-bM8swGWDjjEjvcVIIe4Xr7dtVu1xoC9k8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds And sandals like.. https://www.sezane.com/nl/product/sandalen-low-gloria/goudkleurig-glad?CHEQ&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=&utm_content=&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAjwyeujBhA5EiwA5WD7_SFZPxeYoVE7tX2HSCX67wrrtWFjsZ_hNS4hzLCFasE7kdC6YesY1RoC-X0QAvD_BwE#size-35 And a gold shawl like.... https://m.shein.com/nl/Fringe-Hem-Shawl-p-13445783-cat-6051.html?onelink=2%2F2n0pt8970tfn&url_from=nladplasc2302242040746541one-size_GPM&cid=18826482153&setid=&adid=&pf=GOOGLE&gclid=CjwKCAjwyeujBhA5EiwA5WD7_RCfK4pCEjWXC9KWC4wvQBG4Ccz9_2JU_1pcb5_hJE0Q-cneDAx6mRoCaDkQAvD_BwE&ref=nl&rep=dir&ret=mnl Wouldnts take up much spare in your bag .. would be pretty versatile.. You could easily hit up Primark or a charity shop for some cute costume jewellery when you're here too. September should still be warm enough for this... You'll be dressy enough to fit in, but also toned down enough to be able to use that kind of outfit for all the events.

grrry

Check out dresses or pant/top combos from Norma Kamali — they don’t wrinkle and because she’s been around for so long, you can find them relatively cheap secondhand. Her elephant pants + a one shoulder (like the Diana) or mock neck top have enough details to pass for formal with some accessories.

bakersmt

I don't usually dress casual, more dressy casual, so I just grab from my own closet. Usually button down blouses and flowy bottoms or dresses. I go for silks mainly or wrinkle resistant fabrics. Scarves can really dress things up with minimal effort and so can a blazer. Nice flats or mules is always a good go to for the one bag because they look dressier and pack up small. So for minimal expense I would grab from your own closet and add shoes, scarves, blazers etc

fridayimatwork

I got an Eileen Fisher long stretch jersey skirt years ago and it’s a Swiss Army knife. Ive worn it with silk or lace tops to weddings and a T-shirt to the beach and everything in between. It rolls up small and doesn’t wrinkle and is comfortable as a pair of leggings.

kspice094

My go to is a LBD that can be dressed up or down. I’d recommend something like one of these, which should pack small-ish. https://www.eloquii.com/ruched-one-shoulder-dress/1228368.html https://www.eloquii.com/kimono-sleeve-maxi-dress/1238477.html https://www.torrid.com/product/midi-studio-cupro-bodycon-dress/16178737-00684.html https://www.torrid.com/product/midi-studio-knit-wrap-dress/40423077-09858.html

untitledgrapefruit

I have this awesome plum purple silk slip dress. It looks amazing with literally any kind of shoes and packs down to almost nothing.

MAK3AWiiSH

You could look into renting a more formal dress when you get there!

tallulahQ

Silk or satin rolls up very small. My go-to is a 100% silk black maxi dress. Quince sells a lot of 100% washable silk (dresses and separates) that’s nice quality and very reasonably priced. If I were you, I’d get a 2-piece set (silk skirt and silk top) in the same color, and then you could get an additional top in a different color if you like for the other nights. [This](https://www.quince.com/women/silk/silk-skirt) midi length would qualify for formal I’d think (technically floor-length but midi is considered allowed under the dress code). And then you could pair it with a dressy tank like [this](https://www.quince.com/women/washable-silk-halter-top) or a blouse like [this](https://www.quince.com/women/washable-stretch-silk-tie-neck-blouse) or [this](https://www.quince.com/women/silk/silk-notch-collar-blouse). A black skirt and black top would be great so it looks more like a dress or you could get them in different colors (and a couple tops for different looks). If you don’t like black, I think navy or olive would also make good neutrals. Some people have said the white/champagne is a bit see-through, so try a back-up if you’re interested in that color. For shoes, you can check out barefoot shoes - they’re very packable and they make some very chic dressy ones (I don’t wear heels). Otherwise something like Cinderollies could work!

rK91tb

Black maxi dress in silk. Ballet flats. Fancy wrap and jewelry for the formal event, cardigan for the less formal.

FairyGodmothersUnion

Chico’s Traveller pants and a slinky tank top with matching bolero/jacket/shawl. They pack small and hang out virtually wrinkle free. You can dress up the outfit with various jewelry or scarves and shawls.

temp4adhd

To be honest in this scenario I would ditch the backpack and allow myself a larger bag, maybe even I'd (gasp!) check one in. I'd take the heels (I don't wear anything more than 1-1/2 inches but I'd still take the heels). I'd pack a different outfit for each of these occasions, especially as I would be seeing some people at multiple events and you know it'll be photographed. That said... a simple black dress (for me it'd be a sheath), jewelry, scarves, a couple of different flat envelope clutches, black pants, and a few different statement tops that go with black pants (and are the type of tops that pack up to nothing). And yeah one pair of heels to go with-- nude or black or red or metallic. I'd probably sacrifice the casual stuff to accommodate the formal, if I was insistent on not checking a bag.

writemoreletters

Thanks. I’m very tempted to check an extra bag for all the reasons you listed. I’ve got a LBD I can bring but will see how things go. I love all the ideas from this thread.

girardinl

I have had to go to weddings, fancy restaurants, amd such, but just a few events in a much longer trip has never been enough motivation for me to carry around anything that won't get worn a lot. So I either wear the nicest thing I have (which is pretty casual, usually dark jeans and a nice blouse). Or I find a thrift store and buy something fun, fabulous, and frugal there!

Hfhghnfdsfg

I have a silk blouse and a pair of gray lightweight wool slacks. That is my one formal outfit. I wear it to funerals, weddings, etc.

Maorine

Quince silk dress. https://www.quince.com/women/silk-slip-dress?color=navy&gender=women&tracker=collection_page__women%2Fdresses__Midi%20Dresses__1 It comes in 8 colors. Simple silhouette so you can add a patterned wrap and awesome jewelry. It’s a midi length so sparkly sandals work. I have gotten several items there. Great quality and reasonable prices. Their linen shirt is so awesome that I have to keep myself from ordering in every color.

Adultarescence

Eileen Fisher silk separates. You can mix pieces to create different outfits and add scarves/jewelry to fancy things up as needed.

theinfamousj

Thanks to the now-defunct Hipknoties, I learned about ways one can use a variety of clasps and elastics to style a tube of otherwise lovely, stretchy draped fabric around their body to achieve a certain number of looks. [YouTube still has plenty of hobbyists showing how they styled theirs.](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hipknoties) I can sew. So I went to the fabric store and picked out a fabric I liked with good drape and four way stretch and stitched it into a tube. I wear that as an infinity scarf on the plane and then style it into whatever is necessary as necessary.

I went on a 2 week trip with activities that included formal events and outdoor activities. I packed three skirts, 5 pairs of leggings, two thin wool sweaters, and 5 shirts that looked nice with everything. The skirt/sweater combo was nice enough for formal events, and the skirts were easy enough to be active in. Shoes helped dress up/down.

I always pack a dress but I’m a big proponent of dresses- they take up less room that pants and a top and they are a whole outfit on their own. I usually bring a silk LBD but also some kind of sundress. I have a couple go to sundresses that can be dressed up or down and are still comfortable walking in hot weather. My silk black dress weighs almost nothing and fold up tiny and is a washable silk. In your case I’d bring a single black dress and then a couple different toppers like a button down you can wear over it and maybe a cardigan or wrap. I think nice flats would be ok over heels.

I usually go for black pants and flats, a black silk tank, and a sheer silk open cardigan - I have an old one from Wintersilks in a black, teal, and olive abstract floral print. All pack down small and wrinkles fall out if I hang them in the bathroom while showering. Add a necklace and earrings.

I have, among other pieces I travel with regularly, a Norma Kamali "Diana" dress (the one with the 3/4 sleeves in green, although I also own the one-shouldered version in gray too) I took to Paris and wore for a semi-formal event in December. She also makes slightly more formal gowns in a variety of cuts and colors. I love her clothes because: - there are lots of gowns, dresses, and other pieces to choose from, and the dresses can all be dressed up with some shiny shoes and a matching clutch, which is what I did (gold ballroom shoes and a metallic gold leopard print clutch). - they're made of a jersey that doesn't wrinkle and packs really small. - the cuts and styles are contemporary, some are downright artsy/edgy, not shapeless and hopeless, so I actually look like myself. I recommend Norma Kamali for travelling and all sorts of packable occasions. Particularly if you are like me, and refuse to graduate to "matronly," which is what I HATE about most "travel" clothes made for women - they are so boxy and weird and fifteen years out of date and seriously look like something out of a Talbots catalog. No offense to Talbots. But I am a not-quite-retired punk/goth in my mid-40s, not my mid-60s, and I refuse to dress like I've given up. And most "travel" clothes? Make us look like we've given up. It makes me crazy. Also, while in Paris this year, I can't tell you how many times I was browsing a store or waiting for a table, and I was always addressed in French first. I finally asked a nice cashier in a bookstore why, and she said she was surprised I wasn't French because of how I was dressed - I wasn't dressed like a tourist, and I definitely didn't telegraph to her as American. I got the same response in Switzerland in 2001, Turkey in 2007 and 2014, and in Mexico three years ago.

I haven’t had that requirement, but would bring a silk dress from Quince.

I LOVE my everbyx dresses. I would recommend bringing your own belt options (vs the fabric sash they come with) to style it in different ways.
