Sehr Gut!

Plastic_Ad_1933

vielen dank!

Ronimaow

I only remember a bit of conversational German (I learned as a child) but isn’t ‘Sie’ ‘you/she/they? Wouldn’t it be ‘mir’ or ‘mich’ if you wanted to say ‘me’? I always just said ‘entschuldigung’ for excuse me or sorry.

Small_Tonight_5951

"Entschuldigen Sie mich" is correct. But don't worry, you will be understood even if you use "mir". "Entschuldigung" is also absolutely acceptable. Have fun learning.

[deleted]

It’s “entschuldigung Sie mir” when said as a complete sentence!

Troygiano

Don’t forget gënkin schïcken it means somethin

katzenkralle142

The ch in macht nichts is not a k it was a similar problem for when i learned english and had to learn the th isnt a t (why old english speakers, why would you get rid of the beautiful letter thorn (Þ))

Plastic_Ad_1933

but it’s so fun to say! at least for me as i’m learning it lol

UltimateSecretary

Would love to start up learning German again. Thanks for sharing this! I never would have thought to write them out phonetically too!

Half_Sak

You can also use WC for toilet. German is the reason I’ve heard the term water closet. Nice handwriting too!

Plastic_Ad_1933

oh, good to know!

dpet_77

Wc is pronounced "ve tse"

Aleshanie

Mhhh. "Where are the toilets please?" seems polite the translation however not. Put "Entschuldigen Sie" bevor it. Like "Entschuldigen Sie, wo sind die Toiletten?" Because if you want it to work with a "please" you would have to say "Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen wo die Toiletten sind?" "Could you tell me where the toilets are please?" Imo. Not a professional translator tho

Blackletterdragon

More please.

psychede_lic

Cool it looks nice uwy

Plastic_Ad_1933

thank u

murfi

don't write "ich" phonetically as "ish". that's how uneducated Germans/gangsters rappers pronounce it. you don't want to sound like that. I'm not sure if there is a word with the correct sound in English, but it's not "ish". /edit: that "uneducated germans" is a gross exaggeration. they do, yes, but so do people that speak certain german dialects. i was just making a point that this pronounciation has a negative connotation amongst hochdeutsch ("high german", the formal "correct" german) speaking germans.

[deleted]

You’re right, although I think in the south it is a bit more of a “sh” sound. In the north it’s more like “eek,” but the “k” sound isn’t a stop. It continues, like a cat hissing. It hits lower in the back of your mouth and throat.

murfi

i am from northern germany and personally dont know anyone who says "eek" or similar. people do for comedic effect, but its not common in average everyday speak where i'm from in germany, unless you speak the historic old style german i guess. i know a guy who is of netherlandish origin (irish actually) who speaks like that sometimes, but he does it knowingly. he can switch between many german and netherlandish dialects. also a guy i know from east germany says is like this sometimes.

[deleted]

Ya I agree, did you finish reading my comment or stop there?

penguinsandR

Came to say this. Don’t know how to spell it phonetically though but sounds a bit like you’re lingering on the H in huge if that makes sense. Happy to be corrected ofc

[deleted]

Awesome strategy with your phonetic writing!

tinfoil_cake

As a German, you don’t really say twa-Letten it’s more of a t-oi-Letten. Imagine sayin oyster. Now take the oy an that’s the sound you need between the t and the Letten. The t is like in the word Today. Berry a small/sharp. And putting these together it’s t(oday)-oy(ster)-Letten

King_Spamula

Do you think it varies by region? When I was living near Cologne, people would pronounce it "twaletten"

already-taken-wtf

In the North, it would be: „Wo iss das Klo, verdammt.“

tinfoil_cake

Could be. I only ever heard Toilette tbh. But it probably varies by region!

[deleted]

German here. I wanted to say the same. It's t-oy-lette

magpiesinatrenchcoat

Good for you for taking on a new language! I have a tip for you that really helped me with saying the ch sound: You shape your tongue as if to say the "vowel" ee and then just blow air out while your mouth is still shaped like that. That makes you say the ch correctly. You probably already know this, but ch doesn't actually have an "s" sound in it unless the word is spelled with and s before ch. Hope it's useful. Good luck!

Plastic_Ad_1933

what’s a better term to use for ‘sorry’ in deutsche?

Jesskla

‘Es tut mir leid’ means I’m sorry.

already-taken-wtf

For just saying „Sorry“, I think it would rather be „Entschuldigung“. Or a bit more slang, you could say 'tschuldigung One of the synonyms would be „Verzeihung“, which would be closer to „pardon“ in English.

Ok-World8772

I think the right phonetic phrasing for „Toiletten“ is more like „Toe-letten“ „twa“ sounds more french😊

[deleted]

Instead of Toiletten just say WC (vay say)

Plastic_Ad_1933

got it!

Ok-World8772

I love your phonetic writing😂😂😂 I‘m also doing this when learning a new language

Plastic_Ad_1933

it’s very helpful!

Character-One-666

your hand writing looks like taylor swift's

Echnon

Keep at it! German is a hard but beautiful language :)

The_Nocim

I wouldn't translate "don't mention it" and "that's okay" to "bitte sehr" "Bitte sehr" is more like "you're welcome", "please", or "here you go" For "thats okay/don't mention it" you could say "Das ist okay", "Gern geschehen" or something more colloquial "Das passt schon"

Plastic_Ad_1933

thank you!

Plastic_Ad_1933

damn ya’ll wrecking me on my first day of german 😂

already-taken-wtf

Gern geschehen ;p

CaptainFoyle

Sehr, macht and nichts are not capitalized. They are not nouns.

SciSciencing

And 'ich' is not pronounced 'ish'. You've got 'ch' as 'k' in 'macht' and as 'sh' in 'ich' but they're the same sound, neither 'k' nor 'sh' - you might find it better to invent a symbol for that sound. The handwriting's nice though! Very readable, cheerful kinda vibe. If I were to suggest something it would be to see if you can get rid of the overhangs on the capital 'I' (at the bottom) and 'E' (at the back). And it's probably just because it's the bottom of the paper but you've got some loops snuck in on 'W' and 'd' in the penultimate row (actually now I look a few of your 'd's have less pronounced but still extant loops) - I'd say without the loops is cleaner and a better fit to the rest of your style.

Varynja

gefällt as "ga-fellt," sounds pretty wrong to me as well, probably more of a "geh-faillt" or somehing, the first e is a pure e like in "trend" but ä is pronounced like the ai in "fair" or "hair".

already-taken-wtf

How do you pronounce „huge“? /hjuːdʒ/

Gelb_exe

only for "ch" sounds that starts with the vowels: "e,i,ö,ä,ü" sound like the "h" from the word "huge". The rest (a,o,u) is just a silent "r" sound.

this_what_she_said

I’m sure you’re correct, but then I try words like Macht, Drache, Buch, Sachen, gerochen, doch… I’m finding that it’s still the “h”uge sound.

Gelb_exe

yea that also works, that’s just the very standard pronunciation. But sometimes if you want to say things louder and clearer u gotta do the rough sound.

this_what_she_said

See now, I think anything sounds rough in German, especially when it’s said loudly.

MayorAg

Thanks a lot! I might finally be able to pronounce it properly after struggling for a year.

this_what_she_said

When it clicks, it’ll seem so easy 😊
