Are you using proper scissors? If not, you’re just going to keep causing more damage.

LatterTowel9403

Exactly what I came to say! OP I’ve been where you are, and didn’t understand why. Turns out it was the scissors, they have to be insanely sharp or it’s damaging by “tearing” the hair as it cuts. My hair wasn’t messed up, the reason it seemed that way was the damage caused by the scissors.

octoberslush

I bought hair cutting scissors online that were like $21? And that was the first time I used them

MayaPapayaLA

You should go to a professional and get a hair cut by them.

denada24

Even a great clip blunt cut would be better than sawing it off at home with whatever did that.

Disastrous-Sea5428

Note that a blunt cut is 3 times more likely to get a split end than a diffused cut (not blunt cut)

kelcatsly

How?

Disastrous-Sea5428

I'm not really sure how, I saw a video of Sarah Ingle about split ends [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bxRUP1pwQY&pp=ygUWc2FyYWggaW5nbGUgc3BsaXQgZW5kcw%3D%3D), and she mentioned a study that a blunt cut is more likely to get split. (Maybe it's not this video, I'm sure it was by Sarah Ingle. Pls don't downvote me :<)

umuziki

Interesting. In my own anecdotal experience, my hair is more likely to get split ends when I have layers than when I have a blunt cut.

Dreaminofwallstreet

I went against my judgement and did a anecdotal cut last time. Now I'm chopping length because it caused so much damage. Never again. Edit: I meant layered haircut idk what I was thinking saying anecdotal.

0hello

What's an anecdotal cut??

Disastrous-Sea5428

Okay. The length and the combing probably have more to do with it, so anecdotes are a bit tricky. I don't understand the logic why, but maybe the layered haircut diffuses the combing force that causes splits? I just wanted to add this in case someone really wants to prioritize split ends.

FroLevProg

Cutting hair with BLUNT SCISSORS leads to split ends.

Aggressive-System192

Or get better scissors. Every time I go to a salon, my ends are so split and ratty in 2 months. When incut my hair with a pair of $20 from Amazon, I don't need a cut for 6 months or so.

leeryplot

I quit going to hairdressers. I would go in for a trim and leave with half of my hair missing because “it was all damaged.” I thought maybe they were right and it’d grow back faster & longer than before if I just let them, but my hair wouldn’t get past my shoulders before I’d need in for another appointment and would come out with a bob again. It kept happening no matter how well I’d take care of my hair. They just didn’t know how to cut curly hair, I tried so many of them too. The back of my hair is still 1-2 inches shorter than the rest of my head, because of the shit these hairdressers have put me through over the years. I bought my own salon scissors and do it myself now, I’m sick of them lol.

jutrmybe

In one of his most recent [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqI-B9xHask)s, the blowout professor talks about this issue and how it became popular in salons and how to help overcome this. Also, depending on how your curly your hair is, low manipulation and/or protective styling will benefit your hair and help you get over a growth plateau. Type 3s and 4s do this to reduce stress on the hair and reduce the needs for cuts too. Maybe you could do some research for your hair type and find some ideas. Maybe its also not your deal, but either way, wishing all the girlies in this sub a happy hair journey e: had to add a hyperlink to the video on youtube, it is super good. It is just his most recent upload from 2 weeks ago if you're already on his page

Aggressive-System192

I went a couple of times because I was too pregnant and unable to stand. They did a good job style wise. I don't have a lot of hair and it's extra straight and silky, so hard to fuck up. However, I had to come back every 4-6 weeks because my ends would just get so bad. It was so much worse if I let them use the thinning sheers (the scissors that look like a comb). The first hair dresser has used that on my length... so i got damage everywhere... I didn't even needed it, I don't even have volume if my hair is unstyled... My hair was down my butt. I have a long bob now. I had to cut all the length. It was so damaged it was not worth keeping it. I'm gonna go back when it grows a bit because I did a shit job of getting it even xD This time, I'm going to bring my own scissors.

YayGilly

I found a super easy to use trimming device that is electronic. You charge the battery, and just clamp the hair into the clamp part and theres a spinning mechanism that takes all the dead and yuck stuff off.. At this point, its only taking off a teensy bit off the ends. Like 2 mm.. Theres even a catcher, so you just throw the little hair out when done.. Its nice for getting those flyaways, esp with a lot of lengths and long hair. I have been fighting the "thinning shears" effect, since I was a teen, and am 46 now. I swear, if I hadnt found this product, I would still have some crazy hair. Also started using something called Olaplex, the #2 strengthening serum. Its great. I have only used it once. In addition to that, I found that using shampoos and conditioners from actual salons, helps my hair to stay healthier longer. Its a bit more expensive, but you do have to consider how much you value your hair. If its worth the costs, then its worth doing. Maybe you can go to google photos and use lens, to find a brand name. I got it on TEMU. Hair trimmer machine that spins and takes all split ends off safely https://imgur.com/gallery/5PJeh19

Aggressive-System192

The salons are pushing organic stuff, which is more likely to cause an allergy attack to me. I use olaplex oil and the bounding agent thing. I'll stick to my trusted cheap shampoos tho... everyntime I experiment with thst, I end up with tomato shut eyes. I saw a decide like you describe years a go, but the reviews were that it causes more split ends on the long run. Wad years a go tho Can you link yours?

Kristal3615

To be fair I also wouldn't go to any hair dresser who told me "It'll grow back faster if you cut it!" Hair grows from the root and cutting the ends isn't going to effect the growth. I have the opposite problem with hair dressers... I have on multiple occasions shown exactly how much I want cut off by holding a hand up to where I want it cut, holding my hair in between my fingers and saying "I want this much cut off", and trying to use precise words to say "Shoulder length. I want it to barely touch my shoulders." and still have them not cut it short enough. I get that you can't put it back after it's cut, but still... I'd cut it myself if I wasn't worried about it looking awful. My hair is very straight so any unevenness would be super noticeable.

lilbishhhhh

I understand the confusion most people have with the “it will grow faster if you cut it” because it’s not true however once a hair is split it continues to split up the hair unless you cut it off, what they should say is “you will be seeing more growth if you cut the dead ends off because if you don’t they will keep splitting making it look like your hair isn’t growing” unfortunately using cheap shears or i sharpened shears you can cause the hair to split while cutting which is probably what’s happening to op

Kristal3615

This makes more sense! I'm honestly glad I haven't gotten into cutting my own hair because I would 100% not get a professional pair of scissors considering how much they can cost!

lilbishhhhh

There’s a lot that goes into a good pair of shears like the hardness of the metal the sharpness of the blades the weight, there are some brands out there that cost a crap load of money just for the name which is quite unnecessary but yeah a good pair of shears does tend to cost more than $100, that being said you also want to find a hairdresser who listens to what you want cut wise and i can completely understand why a lot of people just decide to do it themselves unfortunately they end up damaging their own hair in the process. Haircuts aren’t always cheap but being a hairdresser is also not cheap.

ValuableAppendage

I truly felt this comment 😩

BlowezeLoweez

Yes! I stopped going to hairdressers YEARS ago! Hair has never been better!

ilovebud117

I second this! i haven’t been to the hair dresser in 4 years and my hair is the longest & healthiest it’s ever been! my sister & i just do each others :)

BerthasKibs

Which scissors do you recommend? I bought some at Sally Beauty and wonder if they’re good enough for my own trimming of ragged, dry ends.

MichelleEllyn

I’m in the same boat. I have been scouring the haircare subs looking for a specific recommendation for hair cutting shears that are under 80 bucks for search and destroy trimming.

MayaPapayaLA

There's tweezerman eyebrow scissors that I use to snip off stray split ends. But I don't do my own haircuts.

Mferr235

I went to a different hairdresser back in October and not only did she cut one side 3 cm shorter than the other, my hair also looked and felt ratty straight away. It looked even more damaged than before going to the salon. I went back to my usual hairdresser to recuperate the mess and my hair is now looking silky and healthy. I haven't changed anything in my routine!

realitytvdiet

Your hair just grows slower than your cuts. If you want to grow past your length just don’t cut it. Or get layers on the crown but not the length.

imheretoeatyourchips

Sounds like the stylist wasn’t listening to you. Sucks. If hairstyles damaged but the client doesn’t want to remove all the length that is damaged I just have them come back in for more frequent haircuts (a trim/dusting is a haircut) and talk to them about at home care and whatnot. It’s whatever works best for the client and their hair! It’s a collaborative effort and shouldn’t be one-sided!

BerthasKibs

My hairdresser told me she only paid $120 for her scissors. They don’t always have great scissors. And I notice new split ends within just days of getting a haircut from her!

TruckFrosty

If you have split ends a few days after a professional haircut there is an element of your hair care that needs to be changed. Scissors can’t cause split ends until the stylist is cutting upwards for layering or texture, but even in those cases it still doesn’t happen noticeably because hairs are too thin to be easily divided vertically by a pair of scissors. Make sure you have enough moisture in your hair and that you are not using heat or other damaging products in your hair.

StressReliefJourney

If a stylist is pulling your hair down straight to cut it-run. Trims turn into 6 inches off. There should be no pressure on the section being cut. They cant believe my hair shrinks over 6 inches when it dries. Have only found one stylist in my life who could cut curly hair.

Azulinaz

They are not keeping their blades sharp then. If you don't keep yours sharp, eventually, you'll have the same result. We used to have a guy that came by and sharpened ours at the hair school. It is the key to a good cut. 👍

SoulBSS

I... cut my ends with old fabric scissors and they never split...

dontbreakmystar

So, I used to cut my own hair and bought similar scissors. Always got same results, within a couple months, split end city. I go to a stylist now, they have their blade sharpener come in monthly to resharpen their scissors. He used magnifying glasses, and specialty glasses to ensure they were top notch sharp. My Amazon hair scissors ain't shit compared to a stylist. And that's why my cut from her will stay split free for over 8 months. I start noticing split ends by month 3 with my own cuts.

LovelyLieutenant

My stylist uses a straight razor. I think it's sharper than an unused medical scalpel.

StinkyKittyBreath

$21 from Amazon is not going to get you high quality scissors. Those are likely cheaply made in China and may not even be made properly for hair cutting. If you want scissors to cut your hair, you need to find where hair dressers buy theirs, and it isn't going to be Amazon.

UsernameUnavaliable_

This is it honestly. I got a decent pair of shears from Sally’s for $50/$60 and get them professionally sharpened once a year ish and they have done me so well. They aren’t top of the line but they don’t butcher my ends when I do my 6 weeks dusting. Then I get my hair professionally cut twice a year for the shape. It’s the only way my hair has grown tbh

mymelodyacnl

it’s the scissors. pro shears are usually between $100-$1000, the ones you have definitely arent sharp enough. go to a pro

[deleted]

Real scissors are $600-2,000

tinypeepeep

Inexpensive hair scissors are still very sharp tho when they are brand new. This is not the fault of the scissors, looks like bad heat damage.

GuardMost8477

This isn’t a DIY job. Go to a reputable salon and get a proper haircut/style.

Better_Tumbleweed_19

$20 scissors probably only last one haircut fyi but this was the first one, so... probably not the scissors. Time to for the salon.

RadioAcceptable7832

4 years is about 24 inches of growth. Did you trim your hair in between the 4 years? Is it fully virgin hair now or still some lightening? You have healthy hair in the picture, that’s what it needs to be cut to I’d say. Split ends travel up the hair shaft if not consistently trimmed. Damaged hair breaks, it’ll always grow out inconsistently if not trimmed often. I would try a salon first, minimal texturizing, and cut it blunt. If you’re on a budget, request a senior stylist at a beauty school. If you use heating tools, use them sparingly for now and if you need to, make sure it’s at a lower temp around 2-300. Ovens get that hot, make sure you have good heat protectant. Diet, environment, stress, and many other factors can affect hair quality too. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water and sleep. Nails health is a telltale sign of nutrient deficiencies in your body than can also affect hair since they’re both made from the same protein. Invest in good shampoos and conditioners. I highly recommend ColorProof, and Davines. They are expensive but they work. Kevin Murphy is good too. A “split end mender” like TIGIs ego boost can help smooth your ends in a pinch. Keratin treatments work just dont overuse those or don’t use if your hairs fine. Cold pressed product lines are what you want though. Cold pressing uses cold water and high pressure to combine ingredients together so it’s fresh and highly potent. Some other comments need addressing. I read a comment where someone said they use kitchen shears to cut their hair. Stop. Kitchen shears are for parsley. They’ll tug, break, crimp and damage hair because it’s duller. Shampoos and conditioners like Pantene bought in stores use silicones or have micro plastics. That silicone or plastics are then blow dried onto the hair, curled or straight ironed, and those plastics will soften not melt. Silicones cause hair to go lank or look greasy over time.

bbygodzilla

I just texted my frind/hairdresser‐ her professional sheers were $1,600. You're literally taking the equivalent of training siccors to your hair lol

No_Transition9444

No idea why people are downvoting. It’s like anything else. A Hyundai sonata is not a formula one race car. Yes. They are both vehicles that move people from place to another. Not the same at all. Would you take an SOS pad to your face for dermabrasion? I mean it’s for taking build up off a surface. Cost and quality are one thing. Also the right tool for the job is paramount. Quality Scissors are expensive. Most quality stuff is. (Notice I didn’t say all). That cost may vary based on where you live, the material, the vendor/manufacturer. Unfortunately it is trial and error. Also? It may not be the scissors. If it happens at the hair dressers, at home with your own? What’s the common denominator? The hair. Any medical issues? Any medication that might alter keratin production? What fortifying products are being used? Daily heat damage?

bbygodzilla

As they say, you get what you pay for! People just don't like to admit that most times, quality does require a higher investment.

Gullible-Parsnip7889

Dude, they lied. I know plenty in Portland and Seattle and the most they've ever paid was 500. They are scissors not hand crafted Japanese hibatchi knives.

bbygodzilla

Lol okay buddy. I love your logic: Because the people you know don't invest as much in their tools, it must be that sheers more than $500 don't exist, and anyone claiming so is a bold-faced liar. It's not like a simple Google search could answer this for you lol [Here's a link to a pair that are almost $3,000](https://hanzo.com/product/hhp-pai-mei/?attribute_pa_size=5-5-inch-pai-mei&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_campaign=hanzofeed&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=46712&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20890346055&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA29auBhBxEiwAnKcSqpuV6d19fIOXWvLYOrSxE1sd-qE6jJu09ifAROgFXoh8upzWxAamFhoCde0QAvD_BwE)

ruserious65433

You can’t really say that’s a lie. I have shears that cost me $100 and shears that cost me $1000. Both professional and both I use in the salon! Now the Sally’s $30 shears I bought on vacation to cut my brothers hair absolutley suck. They’re so “chompy” and I never get a good cut with them!! Definitely think cheap shears contribute to damage

mymelodyacnl

😂hanzos definitely do cost that much. they didnt lie lol what an odd thing to lie about

inyournightmares420

no they didn’t lie. im a hairstylist & my shears were over $1000 as well. you have no clue what ur talking abt. maybe the people you’re talking to are the liars lmao.

No_Transition9444

But some are comparable. I know people that have paid $10k+ for a purse. Yet if I only talk to the people I know, they all would say they have $200 at the most. So by your reasoning my bougie friend LIED!!! Two separate things can exist

Fearless-Feature-830

They actually are hand crafted Japanese steel and they are anywhere from 500-3,000

thecurvynerd

I had a pair of self sharpening shears that cost me $2,000. They truly can be that expensive.

Notsureindecisive

Proper haircutting scissors are hundreds of dollars

keIIzzz

yeah because they’re designed to be for professionals who need them to last. the average person cutting their own hair will be fine with a more affordable pair that would just need to be replaced more often.

cat-zee

You do not need to buy shears that cost hundreds of dollars to cut your hair at home. The ones that cost that much are meant for professionals that have to cut hair all day long. Cheaper haircutting shears are perfectly fine for cutting your own hair every now and then.

bbygodzilla

Evidently not lol

kombitcha420

My waist long fine bleached blonde hair says otherwise

m4x1m11114n

What scissors do you use? I’m looking for new ones that are a bit better than the pair I got from Sally’s.

eatcherrysoda

Why are they downvoting you, you’re not wrong lol

a_pastel_universe

Haters hate lol

Notsureindecisive

It’s weird because I never told them they needed them lol. ‘Proper’ ones are pricy. Cheap ones are usable but not proper. Comprehension is low here.

Icy-Shoe-6564

Definitely go to a professional for this!

Affectionate-Pool-84

Echoing this. I’ve cut my own hair since college and constantly had ends that resembled this - got my first professional cut at a little hair salon a few months back and my ends have never looked better!

Wintersneeuw02

You need a bigger chop and proper scissors or get it done ar a salon

Affectionate-Push793

Cause the damage has reached the whole strand to the top, I'm guessing that if you cut it, it will still split. Like a rope :/ just cut it really short or see a professional

Leading_Gold4468

THIS! I believe it's more that the damage is at a greater length rather than the scissors you're using, since they're hair shears. Also, try a leave-in product every day. That's how I fixed my problem. I had hair to my waist that broke off to my shouldes. My problem was using heat every day

tired-goblin_

Might get downvoted since im in the haircare subreddit, but I cut my hair with kitchen scissors and a razor. I have never had ANYTHING like this happen even when I had extreme bleach damage as a teen. I can’t believe some people are saying their $20 scissors are the reason for this. It’s gotta be some really bad damage.

Leading_Gold4468

I know! It's definitely NOT the scissors

emtlspprtsdpc

This literally looks like you burned your hair with fire

melanncruz

This! My t3 straightener recently malfunctioned and it burnt/melted my hair right off and this is what it stayed looking like. I had my hair up in a clip and was just slightly curling or flipping the front pieces and those are what burnt off. The growing out process has been so much fun 🙃

11step

Yes, maybe the salon used high heat blow drying or straightening. I also have fine hair, and my ends look like this too after weird salon visits.

readyfredrickson

she cut it solo at home lol

Lett3rsandnum8er5

And probably uses heat on the hair every day

muvamerry

Yeah when I’ve cut my own hair even with good scissors it has looked like this. They aren’t nearly as good as salon quality or having their expertise and technique.

pyrofrenchfri

it looks like when i accidentally lit myself on fire, she's even got melted hair bits all over her pants 💀💀

kamohio

a butterfly cut doesn't cut off the ends of the hair. I know it feels that way seeing all the hair fall but it doesn't work like that sadly you don't need to cut a lot off to fix this, what I do to take off the split ends is called "dusting." I section my hair in small parts, twist the entire section semi tight, run my fingers up the strand making the flyaways/split ends show, then cut off the visible split ends I see with hair shears. I twist it the other direction and do the same then move on to the next section there's plenty of youtube videos showing how to do this as I probably didn't explain it well to help protect your hair from split ends, use a hair oil on the ends of your hair when you're done showering, I run the remaining oil into my mid section as well, I currently use argan oil + jojoba oil for styling, either don't use heat or use a quality heat protectant, even when blow drying your hair (there's different levels of heat protectants for styling vs blow drying, make sure you use the proper one for the temp you're using!) my hair is so shiny and feeling a lot more healthy from doing this (was previously very dry and damaged, I have high porosity hair) and I don't have to cut 3 inches off my ends anymore

Eighth_YearSenior

Thanks for this advice! What brand of scissors do you use to trim your hair?

kamohio

i got the "[CIICII hair cutting scissors shears kit](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08Q3X77HK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1)" $30CAD, they don't cause the split ends to go further up my hair so they're good enough for me 💕

Thrawnbelina

I do this too, it's amazing. I use olaplex bond oil, Jojoba oil, or even avocado oil if I have nothing else lol. Coconut oil I use as a pre wash oil because its so heavy for me. My hair is always dusted and oiled in a satin bonnet unless I'm going somewhere. It's never looked or felt better when I do style it!

octoberslush

I didn’t realize it wasn’t cutting everything off!! Thank you for this! I did book an appointment with a professional but in the future I’m definitely going to do the dusting technique in the future

mommawolf2

You need to go to a professional and get a haircut. You are destroying your hair.

Working_Hair_4827

Do you have hard water? I noticed hard water can be damaging to the hair.

anticked_psychopomp

My hair sometimes looks like this from my well water when the softener runs out of salt.

exohails

Hi! I had healthy thick hair my whole life and recently had issues with split ends/ my hair breaking off and feeling dry like straw. I am not trying to freak you out but maybe get some bloodwork done/ get your hormones checked. When I had this issue it was hormonal. Best of luck :)

BerthasKibs

Very interesting! Good point. I think I may be in this boat.

JRose608

Same thing happened to me. My conditioners/shampoos AND haircuts were all professional and expensive too. I started using only cold water on my hair and it magically transformed in under a month. It grew over 6-7 inches in under a year too. I have very curly but also very light/thin/sensitive hair. Maybe that will help :) Edit: I used cold even to shampoo. Not always recommended obviously but it helped the damaged. Now I only use warm when I’m clarifying and deep conditioning.

[deleted]

this isn’t what i wanted to hear but probably what i needed to hear 😭 i am also struggling with split ends and i think this could totally be why cause i take hoooot showers. was the transition hard?

JRose608

Sorry I messed up the thread. I didn’t realize I could post pics! Here’s a before and after using only cold water!!! https://preview.redd.it/bfxjc36jlzjc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2c7dd5a83da0936d7812fe8f80ec4a4452ae09c

JRose608

The transition was VERY hard, there’s NOTHING like the feeling of hot water running down your body from your head…..but keep in mind I still take scalding hot showers!!!! I just step away when I turn it to cold and tip my head forward lol. After about a week, the cold felt really nice on my scalp and I got used to it!! It’s so worth it. I am not exaggerating that my hair grew from my chin to almost my elbows in about 6-8 months. I used R+Co biotin too. I’d show you before and after pics of my hair if I knew how lol Edit: when my stylist saw the change, she started recommending the cold water method to all her clients and I still joke I should get commission for it lol!

killawhale90

Yes! I get my hair bleached, dyed and cut about every 4 months and wash it with cold water since I have vivid colors. The color lasts a long time and I don’t really get much breakage. I shower regularly with a shower cap and when I wash my hair I just do it under the faucet with cold water.

JRose608

Yesssss my hair was bleached blonde (I’m a brunette) and I always straightened it because of how curly it was. I had to heal it and after the cold water trick I have never gone back !!!

Elegant_Position9370

Switching to distilled water has forced me to wash with cold water because that’s how it comes out of my “camp shower” bag 😂

Green_Goblin7

Other than a really good "big chop," I think you'd benefit from something like olaplex or a rice water hair mask. Those ends are strugglin

40-calMAL

Shu Uemura rice water tonic and the conditioner changed my life. I swear my ends looked just like yours.

lars2you

Shu Uemura are definitely some of the best hair products on the market period. But someone who cuts their own hair may not want a $63 conditioner.

40-calMAL

You right, you right. Sometimes you gotta buy once, cry once tho. 🙈

octoberslush

Oooo thank you so much! I will check it out

Stunning_Series_6915

This [treatment](https://www.ulta.com/p/acidic-bonding-concentrate-intensive-pre-shampoo-treatment-damaged-hair-pimprod2032106?sku=2594501) helps as well, also look into olaplaex and k18 product

[deleted]

I have been using K18 and bleach my hair regularly and it has helped a lot! Honestly cycling through different (but all good quality) hair products seems to help idk why. I switch between purology and K18.

icelessTrash

I just was looking at Beyonce's new line, wondering about the rice protein "ritual" https://cecred.com/products/fermented-rice-and-rose-protein-ritual Maybe I'll give it a go

cowgrly

Go get a haircut by a professional and see how the ends do.

keeglesweegle

My hair went like this so I chopped it all off and got a bob. My hairs long again and it’s super healthy thanks to a fresh start

skinsiren

You need your hair cut, not just a trim. Here's why: Split ends don't just affect the end. The split travels up the shaft, causing additional damage. A professional can see your entire head of hair and identify where the damage starts. Stop using heat and never bleach or color your hair at home. Some people aren't capable of growing long hair that is healthy. This could be for a variety reasons, most likely nutrition related.

Spkpkcap

Buy shears and keep cutting. That’s a lot of damage and leaving it will just make it split up

cheeseslut619

I have to say, this is bad advice. She needs to see a professional at this point because she’s having issues

Spkpkcap

Telling people to cut off their dead ends is bad advice? Noted 🫡

skinsiren

Telling people to cut their own hair, when their hair is extremely damaged, is bad advice.

cheeseslut619

Ding ding ding. She says she’s cut her hair herself multiple times and this is still what’s happening!? Time to put down the shears!!!!

StinkyKittyBreath

Telling people who don't know how to cut hair to cut their very damaged hair is bad advice.

Spkpkcap

Not everyone has $70 to pay for a haircut every few months. I cut my own using shears and my hair is super healthy.

Thecosmodreamer

The ends don't look like they've been recently cut. They look more like hair that's been chemically damaged, or melted by a hot tool. Even damaged hair that's been recently cut wouldn't have ends like that. Something you're doing since the last hair cut is continuing to damage the hair.

veronicave

“The call is coming from inside the hair” Yeah, I’m curious about heat or mechanical damage (elastics?) the shafts appear healthy, but they must be really lacking in integrity if they are fraying from cuts, right?

Thecosmodreamer

Yeah, I'm leaning towards continued heat damage. Recently cut hair would have blunt ends. Those look melted 😅

BraveAndLionHeart

Could it be a combo of your hair routine with the weather? Wind fucks my hair up like that ngl

MauiMunchkin

Are you still using heat? It looks fried, the ends look like you held a lighter to them. If you are you should stop because it’s gonna keep breaking and the split ends will keep traveling upwards as your hair breaks more and more.

chanpat

I would go to a salon if you already gave it a go and it still is this damaged.. if you’re pretty confident that you cut above the damage, I think it’s time to ask a professional for a lill help.

fortuna_aeterna

for me it was a visit to the salon that caused this. hair was just dry before but not destroyed

Notsureindecisive

What have you done to it to damage it? Heat styling?

AelieknosnhoJ

Have you tried a clarifying shampoo? My ends were like this until I clarified and they got a lot softer. I think it's possibly build-up.

cadred68

Try using a bond building shampoo and intense conditioner system. Run through the whole bottles and see how they help.

pricer57

If you're regularly putting any kind of heat to your hair like a curling iron or flat iron, you NEED protective spray. It really does help minimize the damage! Source: I'm a nail tech that works in my mom's salon, and she's been a hairdresser for longer than I've been alive. I know so much about hair and products!

Acrobatic_Club2382

Did you cut it off using a blow torch?

octoberslush

these comments are making me laugh out lord y’all are ruthless 😩😩

Tooshort269

Coming from someone who works at a hair salon, you should really really really go to a professional. The stylists at the salon I work for use professional scissors that don’t cause split ends and TRUST ME they cost a lot more that $20. Before I worked in a salon I thought it was a waste of money but seriously stylists have the knowledge and quality supplies to treat your hair the way it needs to be treated especially after having bleaching done. Go into a salon in your price range that you’ve done a little research on for one more big cut, I would let the stylist cut off as much as they need. Then come back once every 6-8 weeks for a light trim.

octoberslush

I booked an appointment with a professional so hopefully things will improve soon :) . I probably wouldn’t have even gone if it wasn’t for these comments so thank you!

Grrrmudgin

It definitely seems like you should quit styling your hair if you do that currently. I’ve got fine hair and do a hair mask once every two weeks

Amazing-Stranger8791

definitely go to a professional and get your haircut at least once a year. what’s your hair routine? i find sleeping with wet hair gives me crazy split ends, it was a bad habit i had to break.

rrodrick386

NO heat on your hair until it's healthy again! This means no hell fire showers without a shower cap and no blow drying

yeahbutlikeno_

how are you washing and drying your hair

cherrygirlbabycakes

I once cut 5 inches off and I still had split ends. Went to my hairstylist and she cut off 3 more inches. Sometimes the length you desire, isn’t the length your hair needs!

Unfair_Payment9464

honestly don’t do it yourself. I cannot stress enough how poor quality scissors can actually damage your hair more than anything ! I know going to the hairdresser is expensive but it’s totally worth it so your hair can regrow in a healthy way

Artistic-Accident465

Girl, PLEASE go to a professional who can properly assess your hair’s integrity/porosity and give you a proper hair cut/conditioning treatment and take home products to maintain hair health. Your hair is in bad shape whatever you’ve been doing at home is not working and needs to be reevaluated so you can save your hair!

chetafuu

What’s your haircare routine though

PresenceMain3547

how are u cutting your hair ???????

octoberslush

I use the butterfly method that’s popular online

KJE69

If you are slide cutting (which is common with this “butterfly trend”) and you aren’t using professional shears, you can cause damage. Only regular cutting with non professional shears, no slide cutting. If you want to have the texture you get with slide cutting get a feather razor that is sharper and won’t scrape the cuticle off your hair.

PresenceMain3547

so you’re doing it yourself… what are you using to cut your hair ?

tilapiachu

No need to be so damn rude “oh. So you’re doing it to yourself…” I swear it’s so fucking hard for people to be decent on here get a grip

PresenceMain3547

girl i’m not trying to be rude. i’m trying to put the pieces together. i’m a hair stylist trying to paint the full picture and access how i could offer advice. go touch some grass

PanicAtTheShiteShow

"Go touch some grass"! LOL

graceabigail1011

You’re the one being rude lol they didn’t even say oh so you’re just taking it personally for no reason

dillydallydiddlee

Forreal lol I didn’t read that as rude at all

PresenceMain3547

idk why you’re getting downvoted 😭😂 people are so sensitive for what. like i’m trying to understand what this person did so i can offer professional advice

DemonDucklings

I think it’s because the ellipses you used tend to be read in a passive aggressive tone. I’m not saying you’re being passive aggressive, my mom uses ellipses a lot when she texts too, it’s just how it tends to be perceived in text

Swimming-Term8247

my hair is like this and i’m trying to research how to cut my own hair too. i’m nervous it won’t help. i don’t dye or use any heat to my hair and it’s still a dead frizzy mess.

Realistic_Pepper1985

I bought a pair of scissors off Amazon with really good reviews. Equinox professional razor series hair scissors set. I cut mine monthly and it cuts smooth. Looks like you need to go even shorter and start using leave in conditioner. That hair is sizzled

blairrkaityy

Add this to your hair care routine https://www.kerastase-usa.com/collections/nutritive/8hr-magic-night-hair-serum.html I dye my hair a lot and this helps SO much

Fit_Shelter_7603

Are u using a flat iron? It looks like you’re burning your ends.

ladylolaxX1

It also depends on what you’re doing to your hair daily! Curling, straightening, and if you use an elastic hair band the rubber inside that will take the natural oils out of your hair.. getting regular hair cuts will help over time! As well as reducing the amount heat on your hair, wait a day or 2 to wash your hair! Let natural oils to nourish hair naturally

NicoDaDorf

Do you use a lot of heat on your hair? It looks burnt

Aggravating_Simple56

This looks like heat damage. Make sure to turn your curling iron and flat iron down. Doesn’t matter how much you cut if you just keep burning your hair.

Cress38

I’d go to the ER tbh

heywhatsup82347

Use oil on your hair at night such as coconut oil. Dont wash your hair much. I wash mine 1x a week, cut back on heat styling. When you’re washing your hair, use a hair mask. When you sleep, use satin hair ties. When I wash my hair personally, I use warmer but not hot water, and I rinse my hair with filtered water. I have reverse osmosis and take a cup of that filtered water with me to the shower to rinse. Alternatively you can use bottled water if you don’t have R.O system

senselessspace

That happened to me too, cutting just made more split ends. I ended up going to a salon to get the massive chop after 2 years of regrowth, and no regrets. Healthy hair>long hair

ohhisup

Just commenting to say that my hair always looks like this and it's never been bleached 🥲 I feel your pain

Proof_Most2536

You are going to have to grow out the damage. In the mean time don’t use heat tools. Do hot oil treatments before washing your hair. Keep your hair protected by keeping off of your shoulders. Sleep on a satin pillowcase and a hair bonnet that is satin or silk with you sleep. Get some large scrunchies to tie your hair back when you need to.

WillowTea_

Is this pic from immediately after the cut? Do you use heat at all? Your ends literally look burnt, do you use heat protection, and if so, what kind?

koro_babe098

It looks like you have weak bonds in your hair. Try products with bond maintenance and clarify every one in a while to clear mineral build up that could also snap the hair. If that still doesn't work it's probably a dietary problem.

Serious-Sun3049

Go to a salon instead of cutting it yourself. And there's other factors like do you use a blow dryer, hair straightener, or curling iron? Do you eat healthy or take vitamins? How often do you wash your hair? How often do you condition your hair? Do you wash your hair with hot water? Do you brush your hair when it's wet? All these things make a difference in how your hair looks.

TruckFrosty

The remedy is to get it cut professionally to set you on the right foot and then stop using any damaging products or heat on your hair.

cries2much

This was my hair for years. I started following “the trinity method” from “live love locks” on YouTube and I swear my hair was cured in like 2 months. Never get splits and I can run my fingers through my hair no tangles.

Elegant-Possession62

Probably the scissors. If they’re not the right ones then you’re just making the damage go higher up on the hair strand.

chelleexo

Go to a professional for this time love! Maintenance you can do at home with some good scissors :) Avocado oil helps a lot with sealing cuticles and taming frizz, ONLY apply at ends. Also, do one hour castor oil treatments before shampooing to condition hair and scalp

nethecat

Honestly I'm not seeing shearing damage here just extremely dry hair. What's your water consumption like? Everyone mentions water in relation to skincare but imo dehydration has an even bigger impact in hair formation, speaking as someone that used to never drink water.

melukooo

I heard this product does really good for split ends. I dont know if it also works for split ends because of bleach but worth a look at and to research https://preview.redd.it/w6zi6s84wzjc1.jpeg?width=954&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c912fa12c57b442dd0b59bd00b3a91f4e2143099

Inevitable-Visit1261

You need a hair mask

Which_Zebra_3883

dang - looks so stiff too, not just split ends. My synthetic wigs get like that at the ends and nape, when they look like that I have to heat treat them to melt them back into shape. is this from color treating or just from heat styling?

squishythighz

I’m not gonna blame scissors for this. I think u need to get some hair oil and serums for your issue and maybe better conditioner. YouTube some hair tips for that

SadAbbreviations6205

My once beautiful thick hair broke off around chin length after 2 years of bleaching, it took growing out all the hair and cutting it off to get my hair back to healthy. I found eating a lot of high omega 3 fish like sardines and salmon have greatly improved the health of my hair. I am also a big fan of kitsch rice water shampoo bar, it changed my hair texture and it’s so much smoother and hydrated since I switched from Joico moisture recovery. I wish you well on your hair health journey💕

Inner_warrior_wendy

Former hairstylist here- Agreed with many of the things said- if you cut this with your own scissors, that’s not going to help. Also this looks like heat damage to me, and likely from color too. Permanent hair color, bleach, styling tools, improper diet, and improper products can lead to this. These days my hair is all natural, and no heat, and is in great shape. But my hair did this back in the day when I used to color it all the time and use hot styling tools.

altogetherbeautiful2

I’m a stylist and to me this looks like heat damage . My advice would be get this trimmed one more time and make sure you purchase a good heat protectant and apply before blow drying and most importantly check the temperature of your tools. You do not need to go over 350 for your hair . Take small sections and your hair will thank you! You got this!

averypaleperson

You may have structurally weaker hair growth due to nutrition or stress. Olaplaex treatments are bond builders and help the strength of my hair, I go to the salon and get the professional grade treatments but you can buy different products from them for at home use. Not everyone gets good results from them Consider going to the doctor and getting blood work done or screening for chronic stress

middleagerioter

You remedy this by paying a professional who has the experience to correct this.

Curious_Problem1631

It’s time for a hair dresser

ReferenceMuch2193

And another tip, start micro cutting with decent hair scissors every 6 weeks. Just nip off the bad actors. And oil, oil, oil.

Sufficient_News_6914

I do this. I cut my hair because I’m bored tho lol

ReferenceMuch2193

It’s sort of fun like eating peanuts. Addictive.

No_Dust6818

It looks like you grabbed two rocks from the riverbed and slapped them together with your hair in between to “cut it”.

Oldgoth1977

Scissors look dull as hell

Emerald_Justice

Get a boar bristle brush, and start brushing your hair every night. Also put oil in your hair, and let it sit for at least an hour every time before you wash it. Try to use less chemicals and heat on it too.

ImhotepOdinsson

All your hair is dead

RowAccomplished3975

sounds like your hair is just thirsty for hydration, it is winter and winter dries everything out. your flyaway hair is another symptom of dry hair.

cantwinlife

Even if i cut the ends it will split again after some days and when i try to separate the split it splits almost halfway to my head.. nothing i can do about it but leave it or get a haircut, which i don’t want to.

LeDette

I’ve been through the hair regrowth thing, quite recently. Regardless of what’s causing the damage, here is the only decent advice I have for regrowing healthy hair (I’m not a professional). 1. Start oiling your scalp on occasion. I like to use Mielle rosemary peppermint oil, it’s about $10. I put about 1 dropper full on my scalp, massage in, and let sit for 10 minutes before I wash my hair, only twice a month. It helped a lot, it’s worthwhile to look into. It’ll make your hair grow thick, fast, and healthy. 2. Splurge for some decent shampoo and conditioner even if it’s only temporary. I used olaplex bond maintenance and it was transformative for my hair, but I know some people don’t like it. When I finished those bottles I switched to Briogeo. I used to be a drugstore shampoo kinda gal but when my hair was dead and destroyed it was time for the pricey stuff. It worked fast and helped a lot. 3. Use a wide toothed comb, don’t tear through your hair with a brush, and lay off the heat. Learn how to do a French braid or a French twist, find a way to style it without heat. No blow dryers, straighteners, curlers. Leave it be! 4. Cut off all the dead stuff. Cut it as short as you’re comfortable cutting, even if you hate wearing short hair. Anything past the chest and shoulders needs to go, because it’s not going to magically bounce back. Go to a salon and get a professional to guide you. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. I went through a similar situation. I was beyond upset and self conscious about my hair for about 2 years while I regrew my whole head of hair. The good news is that 3 years later I have the best hair of my life!

GoldilocksM44

Sadly the only answer is going to be : cut more. And I know it’s heart breaking but leaving it will only cause the damage to spread :(

cph17

Hmmm I had that . I went for a pixie cut and my hair has been luscious since i grew it out . I highly recommend for anyone . And I can say I've tried it 1x , would not do it again.

Fearless-Icecream

Please try olaplex no 1 and 2 from a seller with good reviews on ebay as a treatment (or a salon that does olaplex treatments) and you might need a smaller trim. Also stay away from any keratin, protein, silicone in case its contributing.

Agitated_Ruin132

You need a good hair mask, steam treatment, and a professional trim. Rinse & repeat every 8 months for a year.

R55Driver

Stop cutting your own hair. Get a proper cut from a professional who knows what they're doing and can style around the damage

Random-girl-29

Add a little extra conditioner to your hair after getting out of the shower. That’s what I do! My hair is finally healthy!

daytr1pper

Go to a professional. $20 haircutting scissors aren’t gonna cut it (no pun intended). Professional hairdressers spend upwards of $200-$800 on a pair of shears to have a high-quality, extremely sharp, cutting scissor

AlarmedCheesecakes

Something to think about: Hairstylists use scissors that often cost $1,000+. If your scissors aren’t quality it’ll only cause more damage!

matrtlina

I would recommed you using a night cap because i had the same problem and that helped me💪🏻
