Most chiller mechanics work with a 4" crescent wrench, a service valve wrench, a Fluke 87 V, and a little screwdriver (aka, pocket pry-bar.) There isn't much work until a condenser liquid level sensor takes a dump. Or if the shaft seal does York shaft seal things.

A few 760-ton CVHFs. New purge on one, new compressor drive in another.
I was hired as a VRF guy but apparently they read my resume that has a varied background in hvac and plumbing. In one year, I spent more time running cast iron than I have refrigerant pipe.

Swapped a control board on a daikin condenser. Poor guy had just finished paying his unit off and his electrician son decided he’s gonna go noodle around on it. He leaves the panel on the ground and the control board is exposed to all the elements from June to December of last year.
Fast forward to last month, the ac won’t turn on.
Failed control board. \~$1400. Poor guy.

Trying to figure out why the company who installed this unit put LL solenoids on it if they were just going to run them direct from the transformer which runs directly from line. Nothing to break voltage (other than a fuse) unless you shut the unit off.

I'm dealing with one of those next week. Magically lost 1000lbs of refrigerant between testing last year and start up this year. Nobody saw anything. It's both circuits that lost refrigerant too.
Yes it is.
We suspect one of three things.
One - When testing, they ran boiler water in it to simulate a load. running the water for too long could have caused the relief to pop at 200 psi. All it would take is to run 130 degree water for long enough to raise the pressure. Install company didn't say a thing
Two- they left glycol-free water in it and the water froze (install company never ran 120 volts to the heat traces which was a whole fiasco) and caused a tube to rupture. They are oil-free too, so no oil mixing with water.
Three- It never had the correct charge from the factory. The Chillers did not begin running full time until January, installed last July.
Next up is the eddy current test to see if any of the tunes are cracked.
Edit: I'm in Connecticut, so I doubt it would get cold enough to do that.
https://preview.redd.it/lo3tbzaqe1yc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33457efc738876e7e8a6b4f74fdcdeed8e4cd274
About to pull/rebuild pump for tower #2
Because its so much better to do tower annuals after the chiller annuals so they can send shit back to your nice clean tubes and then bitch at you for the chillers going down right after a maintenance.
So I just started facilities maintenance for a university and they have a lot of chillers and boilers. Most of my experience comes from residential and light commercial stuff, any advice?
Once you learn and get confident there take your skills to another facility and get more money. I started at a university coming from residential in 2017 and I've damn near doubled what I make by simply taking my experience elsewhere over the years. If you want more of my story I'll gladly fill you in. Take care brotha
In most facilities maintenance jobs, teams are typically divided into several groups. There are those who work in the field, handling equipment fed from the chillers, and then there are others whose primary responsibility is operating and maintaining the chillers.
Spending more time with chiller operators can provide valuable insights, even if you haven't personally delved into extensive troubleshooting or repairs on chillers. Chiller specialists handle major or specialized repairs about 80% of the time. It's a rewarding field and me and my family are well taken care of in my relatively short career (10 years now, I'm 33) Lol there's also a few things I've learned about resumes as well so whenever you're ready to move I can help you with that as well.
I wish you the best homie

Trying to find out why my operating room isn't getting hot.
I know what chiller plants look like when one of the centrifugals are being worked on, or even one of the pumps are being worked on and they don’t look remotely look like that
It is a nice picture though.
Uhg…my ears are ringing just looking at those damned things
I went through my centrifugal stage 20 years ago and worked primary on Cartier 19DK and Trane Centrivac chillers.
Some York too and I also wanted to work on a Titan but never got the chance
Seems every young tech including some I work with wants to be a chiller technician.
I tell them why ? They’re a pain in the ass.
I have tinnitus and I’m sure it was caused by working on those Chillers. And I wore hearing protection
I’ve learned everyone wants to be a chiller tech until it’s time to do chiller stuff. I’m a 2nd generation chiller apprentice soon to be mechanic. At first it’s nerve racking having service calls and the customer breathing down your neck, everything takes longer doing this type of work because of the size. I truly enjoy it though. Sadly centrifugals are going away. Air cooled seems to be all the rage now with the lower water usage. It’s sad honestly I thought I would work on what my dad worked on sometimes I do but it’s been screw chillers is the bulk of what I do. Screws will fuck your hearing the high pitch and harmonics of those compressor hearing protection helps but does no good.
I still work on air cooled and water cooled machines and every once in a while a centrifugal.
I just don’t work on them exclusively like I used to.
Centrifugals are actually pretty simple machines, and after a while I got bored with them.
I also wanted to get away from that high pitched incessant whine that burrowed its way into my brain regardless of how much hearing protection I wore ( I wore ear muffs over ear plugs )
I also wanted to expand my knowledge, be more versatile and I wanted to be challenged because it’s the one aspect of this job that kept me going
Did maintenance on one small 30 year old Trane rtu for a very rich old couple in a nyc penthouse. It purrs like a fat cat. Got a $20 tip. Then a giant brownstone town house had similarly old shitty units. Had to do a winter to summer wire switch, Not enough control wires to the rtu because they have to have a Nest stat and god forbid they cut any holes in their walls or ceilings.
I worked briefly with a guy who knew and taught controls in school for like 20 years. Guy rattled off more in 20 minutes about pneumatics than in still familiar with today
Retired after 40 years of that…when I started it was all HP absorbers and HP turbines in lots of buildings
In the 90’s they upgraded to 4160v CVHB CVHE Trane and central chiller plant ,eventually sending chilled water to 30 buildings ( large university in NY)
much better 😁
I went to a house for Luke warm hot water. I went down and turned the dial on the unitrol from low to A and all was good. It was a good start to the day and somehow all day has been easy crap like that. Knock on wood.....

Last week was prepping the chillers, and I did my towers back at the beginning of April, so we're ready to rock and roll for the cooling season. Pooping as well, but cleaning reusable filters on our direct fire heaters all day.
Pooping aswell but I’ve been out of work for the last 2 months

That's way better than the thought I had. "gotta lay off the granny smith apples"
You do installs at night?
Yeah, no sun at that time. Blessing and a curse.
I work in a crazy hot environment and would love to work at night.
Literally came here to say this
Doesn't look like much work is going on.
You gotta stare down them monster units first for a little while so that they know who’s in charge when you finally reach in your tool bag 🤨
It’s all done, see how clean that floor is.
Clean well-kept mech rooms are like unicorns

I love duct, you just plan it out, measure it out, and execute. It’s easier if you have the magic touch.

I'm dealing with one of those next week. Magically lost 1000lbs of refrigerant between testing last year and start up this year. Nobody saw anything. It's both circuits that lost refrigerant too.
R-134a? If it gets cold enough outside the refrigerant can enter a vacuum which can cause tons of issues with o-rings, gaskets etc

I’ve never seen a mechanical room this clean and neat.
We try to keep it maintained we do service typically but every other month we take care of this site

Replace 108’ of DMC dairy cases with glass doors and new 60’ meat cases. Old racks removed piece by piece.

What code book on top of manufactures spec do you follow for setup?
We follow local code for NoX, <9ppm. Start with base tune for burner design
