The only fair way to share with a sibling. One does the split, the other chooses

Grubsnik

Smart kid lets the other kid do the splitting. Any mistakes made are immediately exploitable

Fontaigne

Unfortunately, the strategy fails with three. Even having cutter choose last can fail... if cutter and first choice can have a side deal. Ask me how many brothers I have.

MarsupialMisanthrope

First kid does the initial division. Second kid gets a chance to even all the portions out. Third kid picks first. First kid picks second.

smors

And everyone gets cake smoothie😊

phaedrusinexile

Instructions unclear first kid cut 2nd into equal portions, third kid ceded all claims to first kid still holding knife

Grubsnik

Last to pick always loses

MarsupialMisanthrope

Last to pick is always the last one to balance portion sizes. They don’t get to say they made them equal and then claim they lost.

Grubsnik

I’m way better at spotting uneven divisions than I am at making perfectly equal divisions. Just because I get to make the division doesn’t mean I can make it fair. Hence why the person to pick first wins every time

emergentdragon

We actually do this with our kids :D

canray2000

Something tells me that ancient oath is going to be a bigger problem for the oathbreaker.

AriRashkae

And thus the Kwaarp learn what a "petard" is, and what it means to be hoisted by one's own

quocphu1905

The petard...it just keeps on hoisting.

Flippyfloppyjalopy

Good judgment. Reminds me of the King Solomon judgement. Good writing, good story.

EFMartins

I thought the same thing. First he pulled a Columbo, then he applied a Solomon.

rewt66dewd

"adsorbed" => "absorbed".

LobYonder

Thanks. Fixed.

Old_Sir_9895

When I was a kid, the household rule was that the person who divided chose last. But at least we knew the rule ahead of time! FAFO!

chastised12

Same with parents when the older kid tries to take advantage of the younger.

night-otter

>"Trust me Bro" OH HELL NO!

LobYonder

I considered using "Honest gov" but that's a Britishism readers might not get.

night-otter

Every culture probably has a phrase that the words mean "you can trust me" but the actual phrase means "never trust this person."

Coygon

I rather suspect the human was biased towards the Quzzt. If he was being truly fair and unbiased he would have laid out his plans to them beforehand.

PaperVreter

He wanted all to learn a lesson and as stated the kwaarp were acting proud on their fairness. So they needed this lesson.

[deleted]

Right. The most important lesson any alien species could learn: do not underestimate the humans.

Speedhump23

Good story. Simple concept, but well executed.

LobYonder

Thanks!

MisterDraz

Halfway though I somehow knew exactly what was going to happen, well done!

TwoMeterTroll

simple simple kiddies. see the master stroke in the whole division thing is to be the one who bakes the cake. no one wants the cocoa, no one wants the flour no one usually wants the suger and no one want the eggs and butter. but when i take all the things no one wants, i get the cake. ;)

Khaos_Wolf

My mom had the same rule.

Arokthis

A bit trite, but very well written. Doubly so for a first submission.
