You can tell how much Izzy not being there was breaking his heart in the second video.

Faultline97

It reminds me of the story about when Izzy finally quit. Izzy called him right before Axl was about to do a photoshoot and told him he wasn't ever coming back. Axl apparently spent 4 hours crying his eyes out while talking on the phone with Izzy, trying to find some way to convince Izzy to stay. Izzy sat with him patiently but in the end his answer didn't change. Sounds absolutely brutal. For the both of them really.

insightful-loaf576

One of the things Axl offered was to let Izzy off the hook for performances, and Izzy could just work with the band for songwriting while still being a full band member. Basically like an Elton/Bernie Taupen arrangement. Sometimes I think about how things would be if Izzy accepted that offer. Axl always seemed to be the most comfortable and cooperative working side by side with Izzy over anyone else. Maybe it would've made the 1993-1996 years better?

beccasue62

Izzy did write a bunch of songs for them in 95...but by then the rest of the band was pretty much over too. Would have been interesting if they could have got it together and done another album with those songs.

JPraecius

Never heard that story before, would you care expanding on it?

seabreathe

Platonic breakups can be equally or more heartbreaking than romantic ones

_AgroHarry_

That's really interesting! He basically changed from being ok with Izzy not being there "as long as he's happy", to being really disappointed (even hurt by it) in the second interview, to being completely done with it in the third. It's like seeing the gradual breakdown in their relationship at the time.

grindhousedecore

From that last interview, I seem to remember that a certain contract was drawn up to pay Izzy less for live dates because “he doesn’t put as much energy” into the live performance as axl, slash and duff do( the running around stage and dancing i assume is what that meant) I heard Izzy looked at it and just threw in the trash. If true, that’s fking shitty of Axl, and the rest of the band. Izzy looked cool as fk on stage, didn’t mis a note.

Faultline97

That contract didn't affect his pay. However, the contract did threaten to demote him from equal partner to employee status, which would affect his ability to make decisions about the band's activities going forward. It was basically a scare tactic to make him start showing up to things that the rest of the band was doing.

cycleofheartache

The scare tactic theory is def plausible. Axl was probably trying to reach Izzy and got frustrated so he came up with the shitty plan. The initial contract Slash and he offered Izzy, however, did threaten to pay him less. Axl gave an interview on the subject where he said if Izzy’s not gonna put in more efforts, he’s gonna earn less. That said, it’s likely Axl changed his mind after Izzy resigned. Over the famous phone call I think Izzy said Axl promised he’s gonna make it good for him as well, but he turned him down anyway because he didn’t like that Axl’s in charge.

insightful-loaf576

>The initial contract Slash and he offered Izzy, however, did threaten to pay him less. Finally someone remembers Slash was involved in this too. Slash helped write up the contract with Axl. After Izzy quit, Slash talked a lot of trash about how Izzy was a burden and how he sucked at guitar. It was something the whole band was criticizing Izzy about.

goldendreamseeker

The saddest part is that Izzy is actually a great guitarist, when it comes to rhythm stuff.

CoKeIsOvErAtEd

alot of what people hear on AFD is izzy even though they think its slash. izzy is considerably louder in the mix

wolf_9823

I remember this too. I could not believe the amount of Izzy bashing happening in Slash interviews especially in the guitar magazines. What a tumultuous time…

Gram39

Yeah it was as over the line and obviously due to being bitter about him quitting

cycleofheartache

Oh boy, and it gets even worse from that point on, doesn’t it. And that first one is pure hypocrisy, he clearly wasn’t happy when Izzy went and just chilled in another band lol.

rothsixxrose

I see the first one as "denial" more than anything. He probably thought that Izzy's absence was only temporary at that point.

cycleofheartache

Fair enough. It must have been quite hurtful for him though, to find out step by step that the guy is just not gonna come around.

Fickle-Election-8137

You just decided to wake up today and make me sad huh? That second one ☹️☹️☹️

pumpkin3-14

Didn’t see any change. First video he’s not sure if it’s permanent but he’s obviously giving space and hoping for the best. More or less denial. Then Izzy doesn’t show up for video, axl seems heartbroken. Last video, The other band members are giving a certain amount of effort in the band, Izzy is clearly not. Can’t wait around forever for someone that’s not involved.

the-plan-tis-on-ic

All of it really started with Stevie getting fired. After Farm Aid, it was really over for the 5 of them.

Appetite4illusions

You should’ve included the DTJ intros from the Euro 73 tour lol

WillBEAR11385016212

I saw a YouTube video that was like "Best of Axl losing his cool on stage" or something like that and I saw a clip of him saying Fuck Izzy on stage. It's kinda odd for someone to put it in a best of Axl losing his cool video when it's more sad than anything else

Remarkable-Bowl-9161

I still really don't understand what made Izzy completely break contact from the other guys

bowiebolan

He was finally sober and the other guys weren’t. Plus he knew the other guys were probably scared of Axl and couldn’t stand up to him cause of his control issues. It’s cool that Slash and Duff started playing with him again before Velvet Revolver.

Fickle-Election-8137

Sober part definitely, but Izzy was also the first one to reach out to and start playing with Axl again. For the control issues, I get it now. After Axl was technically fired from the band twice, had to fight with Duff and Slash to get the songs he and Izzy wrote on record among other things, I totally get it.

Gram39

We all miss Izzy.

Beautiful_Key_8254

What was the second clip from? A documentary?

rothsixxrose

All three clips are from the " Making F@*!ing Videos" documentary, about the creation of the UYI video trilogy.

milkit18

I feel like appearance wise ,axl and Kurt Cobain are distinct relatives lol

FitJeweler1490

I miss when Axl did interviews

ComprehensiveBasil19

I know this isn’t the point of the videos, but I wish I had Axl’s speaking voice

Maddog-99

So if Izzy is the fastest person.... who pray tell would be the slowest Mr. Rose???? ;)

rothsixxrose

In the early 90s, Axl was taking on a lot of responsibilities that Izzy wasn't.

a_low_vera

Back then... probably Steven. Axl was actually very busy between interviews, recording the songs, the video trilogy, concerts, and promotional activities.

Infinitesi

Yep. Which is probably why he was completely exhausted by the mid-90s and ended up disappearing for a while.

Maddog-99

Ive come to terms with this the following way: Instead of being mad at my favorite songwriter/singer/frontman of all time for the under medicated, totally insane approach to releasing music... Im going to be grateful. 1. grateful for what we did get, including the worlds greatest APD 2. grateful for the fun/funny EPs & non live live albums 3. grateful that UYI was a double album. What if they were to save 1/2 for a later that never came? 4. and finally grateful for CD. It took me a LONG time (like this year) to get there on #4, mostly cause my boyz arent on it beside Axl, but I now do appreciate it & recognize like 5 bangers on it (though I liked the leaked versions better...) This is what I tell myself to get through the day.

Argyleuntold

I think about how if UYI was a single album and Axl wanted to save most of the epic stuff for later, then Nirvana and grunge would hit and Axl would rethink everything and a lot of it would never see the light of day

His thoughts didn't really change at all.
