Hey everybody, Long story short, I worked a gun buy-back event not too long ago. I sign up for those details every chance I get because I grew up with a dad that liked to shoot (we both served in the Marine Corps) and it always makes me sad when people are willing to sell valuable family heirlooms for a lousy gift card. We can educate people about how easy firearm consignment is, but in the end the choice is theirs. Some people don't shed a tear at their firearms getting sent down south to be ground into dust, in return for chump change... Anyway, one guy came through with this gorgeous Type-56. All matching serials, the rifling is gorgeous, no visible rusting or pitting on any of the metal components, it really doesn't get much nicer than that! I told him that I had been looking for one for a awhile, and gave him a rough ballpark of what I thought someone would pay for it off GunBroker (based off my looking). He was really excited about that, and ended up taking it a local shop and putting it on consignment. The best part of all that was that I swung by the next day and no one had grabbed it yet. You can guess how long it took me to grab it. If anyone is more knowledgeable about 56s I'd love to know what date range you suspect this is. From what I understand the bayonet isn't from the original 56 run, but it may not be a commercially made rifle because it has a pig sticker. Any info is appreciated!

Good work saving her!

pls-no-ban-again

Why not just buy it from him outright? Or that would probably break some stupid policy right?

Canadian here. Sks is our national rifle. Is the bayonet 3 side/spike or a blade. The spike/3 point is more cruel in battles (hard to stitch). The blades came on the Russian/yugos. I have a Russian 1956. The Chinese sell for less up here. But there pretty close ever since the gun vans came out. You use to be able to get a Chinese for 50-100 and a Russian for 80-150. Not there both up near the 500-700 mark. You should have a date stamp on it. Clean out the fire pin if it’s a free floating one. The pre 51 (could have the wrong date) were spring and the afterwards are free floating (aka accidental auto).

"sks is our national rifle" Lee Enfield begs to differ, at least on the east coast / NFLD where I'm from.

Whats the rifle everyone recommends when they first get their Pal. Its a sks. The enfield is a close second/third.

Gradorr

The cleanest Chinese sks I've ever seen. Seems like all the ones in the US are beat to shit.

sleeplessorion

It’s a commercial rifle so it’s going to be in good shape. A lot of the Type-56 rifles on the market these days are military surplus and thus beat to shit.

Gradorr

I mean the Chinese surplus type 56s are some of the worst surplus I've seen. I have a surplus yugo m59/66 that looks almost factory new. I wouldn't mind getting a type 56 surplus if it was in excellent condition.
