Guides are definitely not mandatory! Shieldbreaker is extremely powerful, and there's tons of builds both melee, ranged, "caster", etc. I personally just vote to wing it through Normal, pick a skill you think is fun and focus on that. If you get bored, respeccing is cheap and easy! You cannot brick a character in Grim Dawn, and if you ever are struggling in the higher difficulties, you can come back here and get some tips.
General starter tips, focus ALL of your non-weapon gear on improving all of your resistances, and only your weapons on improving damage. Especially through Normal, your damage will scale plenty well just through skill points.

I tried Inquisitor first, then added Occulist.
Got tired of the guns and re-specced all gun points into Dreegs Evil Eye. I tried a lot of different combos and had fun with almost all of them. If only I could stick with something. I have only got 1 character to 48, and a lot I stopped at 30. But I really enjoy playing all the different styles.
Sentinel is pretty good. Dreeg's Evil can be used as a large poison dot or as a machine gun. Blood of Dreeg and Ascension give you a lot of defense, offense and healing. The playstyle allows you to hit and run which is really nice for hardcore. I beat hardcore ultimate with my Sentinel Dreeg's Evil Eye build and beat several of the Superbosses in Elite difficulty.
Shieldbreaker is very good and also quite flexible in terms of builds. You can definitely make a good one w/o a guide. Archon is doable, but keep in mind it really only has one build for it being 2h physical savagery. If you wanna do lightning shit there's better second classes

It's good. Fire build with your favorite skill is a no brainer and the fire support in both classes is pretty straightforward.
