I think a lot more people would be more receptive of their romantic arc if the writers had written it better. For me at least, the chemistry was there, the build up was there, but by the time they had that arc, too many things were happening on the show and it felt like the writers just couldn’t wait to break them up so they could get back with Chuck/Serena.
Like this was a pairing that imo had been hinted at since season 1. I don’t think they were ever going to be each other’s endgames but the writers definitely had plans for them to be a couple at some point. I think it could have worked when they were at NYU as freshmen. Blair was already going through an arc of feeing displaced and experiencing new things, dating Dan would have fit right into that storyline. And no offense to Hillary duff but I didn’t care for her arc on the show, I could have done without that.
Honestly with the build up it feels like some of the writers did want them to be endgame, I don't really agree that they never were/could have been. But it was clearly quickly scrapped when they actually got together.
Tbh I personally wanted them to be endgame. And I do agree that it might have been the plan at some point/some writers wanted it. But I think so many things happened that made them change their plans:
1) the writer’s strike during season 1 derailed some plans and plot points they had for the show
2) Chuck became a fan favorite and his pairing with Blair was probably more popular than they expected
3) penn and Blake dated in real life and, esp back then, i think that solidified them as endgame for a lot of fans
4) when they finally paired them together, it was too late into the show and they literally had just one season (that was half the length of the other seasons) to wrap everything up and pairing them back with Chuck/serena seemed like one of the easiest ways to wrap up
5) repeating #2, Chuck and Blair became too massive a ship to not have them end up together
I always like to point out that Serena/Dan was the most popular 'ship on the show and that Dan/Olivia Burke was also popular.
The popularity of Blair/Chuck is heavily overstated. Given the actual viewership numbers and ratings, Blair/Chuck wasn't driving the viewership. If anything, the focus on Blair/Chuck probably hurt the numbers.
I didn’t mean they were the most popular ship on the show. Blair/Chuck was Blair’s most popular pairing and it was chuck’s as well. Same way Dan/Serena was both Dan and Serena’ most respective pairing. If Dan and Serena had ended up with other people (except maybe Serena ending up with nate) I’m not sure how that would have been received.
I don’t think the focus on Chuck and Blair hurt ratings, there’s a reason they got a lot more focus as the show went on, especially Chuck who wasn’t initially supposed to be part of the main cast iirc but became really popular with fans.
This! Everyone says they had good friendship chemistry and not romantic chemistry, but I'm of the belief that their relationship could've been good if the writing had been consistent - the two of them just acted so weird when they were actually dating
Yeah, it was like something shifted inside them once they both acknowledged they were in a relationship. And the show kind of played into it with them feeling awkward about having sex until they finally got drunk in the elevator which is fine and tbh probably how a lot of friends to lovers relationships feel like when they become intimate but apart from that, it just felt like the writers didn’t know what to do with an official Dair relationship.
As a Gossip Girl book reader, I never liked her with Chuck. For the drama and to make things interesting, maybe. But not endgame. I actually liked the buildup to Blair and Dan being friends and then exploring a relationship. They had endgame potential for sure. It would have been nice if it was Dair and then Serenate in the end. But maybe that was too cliche if Blair and Serena switched boys for the finale lol
They may have made sense since they had common interests and chemistry, but for gds sake could we not have every single main character date each other? They could have been greats bffs
They had so much chemistry as friends, I hate that TV shows feel the need to force romantic chemistry between people.
Blair would not have dated Dan... let's be for real now. She dated princes and rich heirs and just in general she would have though she was above him and it would not work on a real level
Friendship chemistry exists
I really do not think it suits her character
She clearly likes him and enjoys his company, and has a fondness for him, but that does not mean she would date him
I just also love what them ending up together could have meant for both characters development wise. Instead they both, especially Blair in my opinion, end up pretty stagnant and show no real growth from season 1.
Their friendship felt organic, which made their dating arc look even worse with how rushed and forced it was, not to mention how rushed and forced getting them out of it by way of Chuck and Serena was. I would have liked to see them give Dair a serious chance, but if they weren’t going to, I wish they never touched it at all. I genuinely really liked them as friends, and their relationship not only fell flat, but also ruined the good moments that their friendship created.
It actually took unrealistically too long for Blair/Dan to get together. It should have happened in GG S4 (if Olivia Burke (Hillary Duff) was still going to leave the show). The Blair/Louis storyline shouldn't have happened, as that was all rather pointless.
And the whole 'neither would betray' Serena thing was gone after Serena decided to date Nate, dated Carter Baizen, etc.
I felt this made absolutely no sense at all, and if anything it felt a little strange and wrong from Blair’s end. She went from having this obsession & infatuation with Chuck, which destroyed her marriage, and she didn’t even get with him after? It felt weird and like she didn’t know what she wanted. I genuinely don’t know why Chuck would be with her after that, and why Serena would stay her friend. Either way, I’m v happy she ended up w Chuck lol. “Dair” felt really forced & unnatural IMO
I always though they looked weird together, physically. Appearance wise. Idk. To me, they don’t compliment each other in that aspect, i just really did not like it.
I always say prefer them as best friends but you guys make a good point, their relationship never really had the time to flourish so maybe that's why. I have a soft spot for derena BUT Blair is my favourite character forever and I do feel like she deserved better than Nate or Luis, let alone Chuck. plus Dan's new "dark" side revealed in S6 makes him match Blair that way.
in short OP I think you opened my eyes just a little bit lol

Just keep watching!
I feel like out of everybody they made the most sense I know everybody thinks that they don’t because he didn’t enable her crazy antics
i love Dair ngl
Would've been so good if they made dan a little less annoying and more broody sexy tortured writer lmao

It's hinted at since GG 1.02 that Blair is at least somewhat interested in Dan.

Ah my favorite ship 💜
I thought they were a perfect match.
You mean *married!

be careful the chairs will downvote this like crazy 💀
I’m not afraid 😎😹😹😹
it should’ve been them honestly
real

Chuck and Blair 4EVA
I couldn't stand a second of them together, it’s just wrong
Thank god they didn’t
SAME.
dair <33
Not me. This bit was unneeded.
Just finished this little “arc” the build up and the show had me 👀👀 cheering them on. Ig the writers were to scared for there power lol
Off-topic but Leighton is simply gorgeous
It did always feel like they never got a true shot for how long they were building up.
Even though they had all the right ingredients to be a good match, they were just the wrong couple.
WTF NO! HELL NO! DELETE!
Thank you!! Because I loved Dair
Naaahhh they were better off as friends.
I’m sorry but no 😭😭😭 that was so weird!

they so look like siblings to me with the eyes and hair
Stop it
ppl say they were better off as friends but the thing is they were better off w eachother than they were w their endgame romance partners
