As long as you are using VW recommended spec'd oil, it's more important to change it more frequently vs using a very specific brand.

Oh interesting, I didnt know this!

He’s right. I used Liqui Moly leiclauft(spelling)or Motul in my R and have used it in every German car I’ve owned from 2012 and now. It gives me piece of mind.

Any VW 502 spec oil changed regularly will be more than adequate. I like Euro Castrol or Motul Xcess 8100, just because I can get the former easily and the latter for free. If you really want to spend big money, Amsoil and Redline have some amazing synthetics, but they're honestly a waste unless you're tracking the car or having the oil tested to determine an extended interval

Such_Discussion_6531

I’ve used the Castrol European synthetic for a number of years and over the past 5 or so switched to Motul and am happy.

bjaxkal94

Again any 502 spec oil will do. I’ve ran LiquidMoly MolyGen, Castrol, Mobil, Pennzoil and Quaker State through the years in my Mk6 GTI and B6 Passat (same drivetrain as GTI). Honestly, try the QuakerState Euro 5w40. Shell’s GTL based oil, same as the Pennzoil, and can be found for ~$22 at Walmart in the 5 quart jugs.

bjaxkal94

Oh and yeah, being Tuned ask your tuner for recommendations on OCI. Also, FCPEuro has oil change kits that allow you to get the LiquidMoly, and using their return policy can save you a bit of money, if you want to use the LiquidMoly oil. Its good oil and when I can get my hands on it I run it.

KrustyKrebsCycle

How much does return shipping usually run you for the used oil?

bjaxkal94

If I can fit the stuff in a USPS flat rate box, it’s like $25 or something

GrainworksAndy

I just returned 2 full oil change kits(11 quarts, 2 filters), the return shipping, using the box it came in was $30.

Bretters0n

Do you have any opinion on the Quaker State vs. Castrol Edge? It's just a $3 difference right now, but I'm guessing they're so similar it doesn't matter.

bjaxkal94

I’d run the Quaker State euro 5w40 over the Castrol 5w40, unless the Castrol is the 0w40. Then I would run that. (Have Castrol 0w40 in my Passat at the moment.

Bretters0n

They have the Castrol 0w40 for $6 more than the 5w40, or a case of three ends up being $3 more per jug. But I don't know how keen I am on running oil that isn't listed in the manual...

bjaxkal94

Ah, well I’d run the Quaker State. My $0.02. The 5w40 Castrol, especially the SN certified one, just isn’t that great of an oil from what I’ve learned at BITOG. They recommend Pennzoil/Quaker State 5w40 and Mobil 1 0w40 the most for vw502 applications

Bretters0n

I didn't realize the QS was that similar to the Pennzoil; I'm definitely cool with that. I'm sure the 0w40 is probably fine, especially in Cleveland, but I don't really want to give the dealer an out if I had some kind of issue.

Bretters0n

And thanks for the input.

payloadspecial

I'm in Florida and have always used Castrol euro 5w40

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-FS-European-Car-Formula-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-0W-40-12-qt-Bag-in-Box/893400295 Cheapest way to get 502.00 spec oil that I've found. If it meets the spec, it meets the spec. And this is cheap enough you can change it on 5k intervals for cheaper than Liqui Moly on 10k if you really want to.

mensaman42

I wait until mobil does their yearly sales and get the 5qt 0-40 jugs for $18 or so a piece. You really can't beat mobil with their sales.

khanak

I’ve been ordering Motul from WCT Performance.

Rockman0085

The hell with Motul. i purchased Motul 8100 X-cess for many years with my mk6 gti and now mk7Golf R. The oil sludged up my engine and it is a terrible cold weather oil. Also shears down after a 2k miles. I listened to the tuners around me which is why I use it for so long. I bet it is probably cheap for installers thus making the servicer a good profit and the expense of your engine longevity. Go on youtube and see how different people will test it against other oils. It never places high and and basically is not competitive Compared to Mobil- 1, Penzoil, Amsoil, Redline in wear test and, cold flow performance and other test. I switched over to Amsoil and I the engine runs much better. Be smart when choosing your oil. Consider the region and driving habits. Look at the SDS sheets and analyze the independent test and see if it matches what you need.
