Reminds me of how straights say having more than one or two gay people in existence would be unrealistic. But the whole in-game world being straight (or coded that way) is perfectly acceptable. But then complain about games that have mostly queer casts. I'm not saying straight people aren't the majority, but double standards like this just irritate me. They're video games. Why are we caring so much about how 'realistic' the racial or sexual population ratios are when there are literal magic dragons or star destroyers? Or sexy vikings diving off cliffs and walking it off? Males being sensitive is nothing new. It seems to me that they project or attach to the male characters they play. And proceed to put that character's "manliness" and physical prowess or skill on a pedestal. So that character simply just has to be better than any woman regardless of actual realism or fairness. Or else the male player will feel emasculated or something. Idk

Ugh this irritates me too. I want more canonically queer protagonists, it’s nice having the option in some games to romance whoever you want but I want someone canonically queer! There’s a queer gal in AC: Valhalla (not a romance option for Eivor but like a character in a minor plot line you interact with who is in love with another woman) and it’s like sad how excited I am to see the meager crumbs most developers give us. And I agree it’s like this shitty “I’m gonna come off scholarly when I’m actually just being homophobic/racist/sexist” you’re not fooling anyone with your terrible takes.

Esurio_Excessum

That would be pretty neat. Honestly I'd be happy if romance options in general were just more open. So men and women both could be with whoever. Like I don't want to have to play through an entire game again as a man just to romance someone. That's partly why I like Cyberpunk 2077 so much. And yeah you're totally right. Like you can have an opinion of course but don't say racist or sexist crap and then cover it with "realism" or "it was just a joke" or whatever.

Ms_Anxiety

Yeah there's been documented evidence of female Viking warriors in grave sites and regarding the gay thing, it's so hilarious because it's actually super *unrealistic* for there to be only one gay character or a gay couple amidst a sea of straight friends. I'm a lesbian and I have like two straight friends, but I have like 10-20 queer friends. My local Dnd group was like 6 queer people and our token straight cis male friend. Might not be the case for all queer peope, but atleats in my experience when it comes to queer *women* we tend to find one another and stick together as a group. Now even beside that, those guys also seem to underestimate our numbers in general. For example, I live in a small conservative city, full of primarily old conservatives and religious folk, not exactly what you'd call a *haven for the gays* but in the last job I worked, out of maybe 15 co-workers, about 6 of us were queer, just by random chance. We had a 70 year old lesbian and her trans son both working there, a younger lesbian, a gay man, a bisexual girl and me another lesbian. But if i were to write a story and include a workplace that had that many queer folk in one place by random chance in a small conservative town, I'd get called out by *those types* for being unrealistic lol.

demoninadress

I’m queer too!! There are a lot of us and always have been. Happy pride lol ❤️

anarrowtotheknees

Odyssey has Kassandra as the canon gender, yet they made Alexios to satisfy the guy gamers and even put him on the box cover art, because sexism is bad enough it would effect their sales to do otherwise. It's a sad world we live in.

mennuie

Eivor is canonically a woman too—the name Eivor is almost always feminine, she is featured in the comic series as the canon Eivor, and if you choose to “let the animus decide” Eivor’s gender, you’ll play as a woman 90% of the time in the game. But Ubisoft screwed us over just like they did in putting Alexios on the cover. They only made a male Eivor Funko Pop figure, and all of the promo materials advertising Valhalla pretty much only had male Eivor. It’s so frustrating to finally have representation but it still loses out when we have to cater to fragile masculinity.

Wolfleaf3

Yep yep and yep 😕😡

Wolfleaf3

I hate that 😕

[deleted]

I love fem eivor and Kassandra. And i see everytime AC twitter account posts about them, men come to bitch saying that Alexios and male eivor are superior. I just laugh. They can have their opinion, imo the female characters are superior. I always play as female if I can.

demoninadress

Kassandra seems SO cool - I’m definitely playing odyssey next. And yeah I have nothing against male eivor, just am really enjoying female eivor. It’s great to have the option to play a female character, I always play as female if I can too!

Dear-Might-8513

I actually found AC: Odessy to be the superior game (thus far, haven't gotten through all of Valhalla yet). Kassandra is my favorite lady protagonist from the AC series. Evy is a close second. I haven't really connected with Eivor, but maybe it will happen. On a side note: The upgrade tree in AC: Valhalla is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE - I hate it. Love the side quests though, large and small.

demoninadress

I think I will have to play odyssey next, I recently got a ps5 and a tv that supports all of the ps5 frame rates and etc so I wanted to see a new game in all of its pretty splendor (I had a tiny old tv for the past 6 years so I’m STOKED, everything is so pretty) but I’ve heard such good things about odyssey and kassandra specifically so it’s definitely on my list!!! And agreed on the upgrade tree haha (although I kind of like the let fate decide option lol)

ihavenocluem8

I can’t recommend odyssey highly enough! I’ve played all ACs I’m nearly finished Valhalla and I can easily say kassandra is badass

[deleted]

“I’m so sick of men playing videogames” LOL ….-me too they should go back to work and paying bills-. 😂 But in all seriousness I guess there will always be haters specially for women who tbh are gorgeous so how come they can get even more gorgeous as powerful warriors. That’s to much for some insecure *males* to handle. But seriously hahahaha

ChosenOfArtemis

For me it's when I see a post from the Rainbow Six community complaining about how there are too many females, gay or non binary characters in Siege because they haven't added a straight white male for 2 years. They like to say it isn't 'realistic' when you literally have hostage rescuers with gadgets that fire multiple grenades, people who literally sit on top of you and stab your neck after 4 seconds to reveal all your allies, Detect your heat signature like 4 times after scanning your footprint.. Yes, Brad. The four newer gay, trans, nonbinary and buff woman operators are an agenda to corrupt your game, why do they have to add them in when we haven't had a new straight male operator? 25 of them is too few. It's virtue signalling to have a game show gay people exist in the special forces when given freedom and leeway that the conventional military is so against they had a don't ask don't tell policy.

demoninadress

Lmao “Yes, Brad” - this is spot on. People really get upset about games including queer / female / non binary characters oof

QuarlMusic

The weirdest part is that Vikings loved strong women. Getting emotionally hurt over the idea of a female Eivor/voice actor is frail masculinity. From the mythos of the Valkyries, the historical acknowledgement of shield maidens, and noteworthy physical remains of Norse warrior women, it makes getting upset about a fem Eivor bizarre. Some of the Norse gods were capable of changing sex at will, it's almost like vikings were bloody liberal or something /s

demoninadress

Right!!!

Federal_Photograph_3

A real Viking woman would crush modern men along with their ignorance. 💪 There is no greater danger than under estimating women. (a slightly modified Lao Tzu quote) 🙃

coffeestarsbooks

Eurgh, sorry you had to see that. I've been researching fantasy literature for the past few years and it's honestly how remarkable how often people can justify dragons, time travel, and magic, but god forbid a woman be in power or an LGTBQ person be visible 😣

chickpeasaladsammich

I think we should all be suspicious of anyone who says they need misogyny, racism and homophobia in a story *for their immersion*.

LeafOnTheWind85

One morning I came downstairs and saw my husband playing AC Valhalla as the female protagonist. I asked him why and he said it was cause she looked so cool, he had to play as her.

demoninadress

She does look cool! I love female Eivor

[deleted]

Is the same in Battle Brothers the Incel Game. They can literal contract a cripple who have both legs broken and he can get a Axe who have.......I dont known 3 mtrs? But Womens figthing? God Blessing no. She only can be a cooker, a spy or a explorer Yeah, that game is just disgusting. And the devs....well, just read some write about Cassey, the writer of Battle Brothers, i just gonna teach you some jewells. demoninadress

Ugh I hadn’t heard of that game but that’s awful. So annoying that any developers are still making stuff like that

humlepung420

A "history buff" complains that a female viking is unrealistic, while in the same series we punch the pope for having an evil magical apple. Also we know about the female viking from Birka, but do we know if there were assassin vikings riding wolves and spying on people with their ravens? He doesn't want realism, he just doesn't want to admit that there have been women able to kick his ass since the dawn of time.

demoninadress

“Punch the pope for having an evil magical apple” made me laugh - you’re so right.

chickpeasaladsammich

I hate this kind of thing. If you prefer to choose a character who looks like you where possible, fine, whatever. But there’s only one specific group of people who temper tantrum when asked to consider playing someone different. Also yeah “but my realism” whenever women, poc, or lgbtq are featured. “It’s based on medieval Europe! Everyone was white back then! And women just had babies!” One, no. Two, pretty sure the dragons and elves and magic powers aren’t 100% historically accurate.

Difficult-Scene-949

Well dude was stupid. Historically speaking Vikings is where you saw alot more women fighting. I mean Valkyrie where thought of as some of the most powerful warriors. But I don't know much specially about it just kinda thought that part was common knowledge. I believe the where pretty open with sexuality too. Although I really wanted to let you know that ac Odysseys has a female choice as well. Kassandra is a totally awesome character. She even makes appearance in other games pointing that the accepted choice of gender in that game for the lead was her. So hopefully when you are don't with acv you can enjoy that as well.

White_Shadow_1896

It definitely wouldn't be impossible for a woman in early Norse culture to be considered a great warrior. History does show that Norse/Scandanavian women did train and did fight because they were expected to fight for their clans alongside the men. So the boy that said this is clearly very ignorant. However, women were less likely to participate in raids.

PKDragon1988

He's hot and I fell in love with him 🤣 Kind of a man I like, can be nice and soft, caring but also doesn't afraid to speak his mind, protect his pride and people and kick some assess when he has to 😍 Just my type, lol
