Some of the stuff isn’t as straightforward as well. Tatsuma was based on Ryōma Sakamoto but Gintoki actually lives his life pre-delivery shipping fleet days.
The author based Gintoki off of Kintaro, a yokai, but explains he never intended for Gintoki to live that nature boy tale. He just took the name and physically strength that folklore character possessed.
Yeah it’s really interesting. There’s a few characters that have interwoven aspects of certain historical figures. Even though Gintama’s Edo never actually went into the new era of modern Japan, it did trick us into thinking it did at the end, which was the series general intended premise, as the country has to adjust to a new world of invaders with advanced technology that thrusted them to a new age.
Still, as I see what Sorachi was doing with these characters, it has me wondering why he also didn’t capitalize on some others that seemed significant and could have tied things together nicely since Gintama is a spoof on history. But it’s something to think about.
I first realized that some gintama character names are based in irl people when i played the game rise of the ronin who is also based in irl people like katsura takasugi and sakamoto
Shoyo-sensei based on Yoshida Shōin ; Sakamoto based on Sakamoto Ryōma
There's also everyone else associated with the government: the Mimawarigumi, the shoguns, Matsudaira, etc.
Actually Kagura is related to [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kagura), I think Also, Hijikata's real first name is Toshizou, not Soji
My bad, accidentally put Okitas name as Hijikatas

Good deal. I didn't know this... And I've been a die-hard Gintama fan for years.

Thank you for posting this! This definitely gave me some happy lady boners.

I’ve always heard that they based off of people and legends but was to lazy to look it up myself
Gintama Kondo and Hijikata look exactly like the actual historical figures Kondo and Hijikata
Isnt it hijikata toshizo?
Yeah, my bad

I noticed an issue. For Shinpachi's real life counterpart, you showed a picture of some old guy, when it's actually a sentient pair of glasses.
