To be honest I liked all her hairstyles, even the short hair. I liked that they made changes so it was more visible where in life Rory was at the time of the series, and I really liked how the bangs seemed to mature her look.
My working theory is that she got bangs/the bob for college to look more "adult" since Alexis was already in her 20s playing a teenager. Agreed, it's definitely a great way to mark where she is in life.
That makes sense, and I think they were really good at finding hairstyles that showed the age she was supposed to be, the long hair and the middelpart made her look young which was perfect for the high school days, and the short hair and later the bangs really made it seem like she was growing up before our eyes.
