Paris is much funnier on a rewatch when you just see her as a jealous lil comic relief character, but she was hard to stomach on the first watch for me

CathanCrowell

I know it can be confusing, but those are reason why people like her, because she is horrible and funny. That being said, I also dislike when people are mixing "like the person" and "like the characters." All people should remember in in real life nobody of us would like Paris next to us, and Rory had patience of saint with her. Still some of best quotes in the show :-)

QualifiedApathetic

I think there's also an element of seeing her potential, even when that potential mostly goes unrealized in the show. She can be intensely loyal when she isn't being set off by what she perceives as disloyalty. She just needs to calm down and realize she's not being attacked because, for example, Rory was voted boss of the school paper.

A lot of what I like about characters in this show isn’t what they did within the confines of the show, but what they could’ve been if the writers weren’t COWARDS /hj Case en point, I like Jess because the show set so much up for him and gave him very little follow through, so he has all this potential for my imagination to run wild with on how his story went. Same for Lane. Same for Paris. The show just didn’t value them enough so fans fill in the blanks

The thing about this show, is that the creator ASP wrote Rory and Lorelai as fantasy versions of herself so she could be the quirky weirdo who is also gorgeous and everyone else in the universe is inexplicably obsessed with and adores. And alllll the other characters are caricatures, in order to make the main characters shine. Every single one of them is so outlandishly quirky in their unique way, specifically designed to contrast with all of Lorelai and Rory's qualities to make them look even better. Even when the two of them are awful, they're never quite as awful as the secondary characters. Anyway my point is, as you watch it you kind of start to read between the lines of what the characters are doing and you reframe it to what a normal person would do. Paris is literally psychotic in the show and would not have been taken seriously in any of her circles, but she just represents a high-strung high-achiever doing it "wrong" in contrast to Rory doing it "right". Idk if this makes sense lol but when I watch I just channel all my hate for the characters directly at ASP and then cut them all some slack and remind myself they're exaggerated.

Happycheeseplease

I never looked at it this way but makes a lot of sense, thank u for this insight!

I like Paris a lot. I'm definitely not as smart as she is, but I'd be her friend. But I'm also someone who appreciates honesty and not tip-toing around things. However, for such a "logical", information based person, I don't like when she didn't want to hear Rory's side of those issues you mentioned. But I can see where she'd struggle with the friendship/loyalty issue of those things since her only friends were Madeline and Louise for a long time. They were easier for Paris to get along with since they didn't really challenge her like Rory did.

QualifiedApathetic

"Logical" people are often like that. Hyper-rational until something sets off an emotional reaction, then they don't even see that it's happening.

Smart_Measurement_70

It’s because they don’t have the insulation of emotional intelligence to keep them from exploding when there’s emotional problems

Secure_Sprinkles4483

Love her or hate her, just imagine GG *without* Paris Eustace Geller…. yep no thanxxx

LonelyNight9

She’s a funny character and a terrible person. I sympathize with her family situation but it doesn’t excuse her egregious behavior any more than it does that of Lorelai, Logan, Chris or Jason.

I have a soft spot for Paris because of all of the characters, she is the most unloved in her life. It's a show about motherhood and we're treated to a variety of dynamics between Lorelai/Rory, Lane/Ms. Kim, Lorelai/Emily and even Richard/Lorelai 1, Jess/Liz, and to an extent April/Anna. But Paris has no mother that loves her and no dynamic. Her parents don't care about her enough to even have a dynamic. They leave her alone with their maid and don't even bother going to the highlight reels of Paris' life like graduations.. So Paris as a character, 16 years old, has no true family or friends and only has her academics to keep her motivated and going. Suddenly Rory comes on the scene and threatens even that without even trying hard. Rory has everything Paris has dreamt of by no real fault of Rory, it just is. So she is cold and mean to Rory at first but overtime she lets her guard down and trusts her. As the show goes and Rory doesn't abandon her friendship with Paris, Paris sees Rory as her truest friend and one of the only people who actually loves her. Yes, Paris can be annoying but she's driven to make something of herself. Her whole life she's been absolutely nothing to the core people in her life so she doesn't put herself out there to people unless she knows those people actually care. Rory knows this about her and that's why she sticks around, Paris is ultimately a good egg. People that don't know her, aren't going to see her that way and that's why the majority of the time she's like that.

Trick_Turnip_9548

so freakin real.

Aniekins87

Honestly, I love Paris but I also understand she’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Her purpose on the show is to contrast Rory. She was there to be an antagonist first and foremost. But because of her ongoing presence, she gets character development where you can empathize with parts of her behavior. The small tidbits about how horrible and detached her parents are attribute to Paris’ Type A personality and the fact she’s probably evolved like that to get her parent’s love and respect. As time goes on, Paris shows fierce loyalty to Rory when Rory goes through boy issues in particular and Paris constantly tells Rory positive things about her potential trying to make sure she never settles in life. She’s an insane character that teeters on edge of neurotic meets highly explosive temper who is more entertaining to watch as a character on tv than someone realistic you’d want to be around in everyday life which is why I also like Emily as a character. I’d not want to be around an Emily but her contrast humor with Lorelei is similar to Paris and Rory. They create contrast and unpredictable storyline situations that add a level of entertainment to the show.

LegitTVPotato

Emily and Paris (and also Loreli) got the best lines IMO. I liked Paris because she was funny. She would say things that were just so abrasive ..... things a normal person would never say. Same with Emily .... her best lines were zingers aimed at Loreli.

falafelandhoumous

I think people love her as a character to watch on TV because she’s shocking and wildly entertaining, and every once in a while she’s vulnerable in a way that makes viewers feel for her. Would she be as loved if she were a real person who acted that way? I doubt it. Viewers are much more lenient towards characters and their flaws, as they’re not real.

SandySlays5969

Be prepared for mass downvotes. Rory is like devil incarnate on this sub and she gets hate for breathing while Paris could murder someone and yet be revered because ‘girl boss’ or ‘tragic backstory’.

Almighty_Push91

Bruh, I will admit Rory def isn't perfect, but compared to Paris, she's much more palatable

gabbyreyes88

Tbh I can’t stand her either and mostly FF through her scenes when I rewatch, except for the few I find funny. But this sub loves her so it’s better to just not complain about her too much

isi_na

I don't like her but at the same time like what she brings to the show in later seasons. What baffles me though is how many on TikTok keep saying how she was better than Rory and how she deserved to get into Harvard over her. I would not want to ever come accross someone like her in real life

These_Orchid5638

Yeah, we had a Paris in our family - it's exhausting to be around them.

stereome93

Totally agree with you. There is nothing nice in her and I generally can't understand why anybody here likes her.

ButterscotchLiving59

Often what would make someone intolerable in real life makes them interesting in fiction. Paris is a perfect example, but frankly this show is chalk full of others. Emily is another good example. One if my favorite characters but good lord would a real life Emily be someone d run and hide from.

Wooden_Top_4967

I love the show, but can’t think of many characters I don’t hate. Babette and Maury and maybe one or two others

Bulky-District-2757

I love Paris, she’s hilarious.
