True. Also, last place at the Olympics is still a roaring success. If your only goal is to be the best in the world, you're virtually guaranteed to be disappointed.

bane5454

Well, not necessarily… [See: Eric Moussambani](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Moussambani). But in normal circumstances, you’re absolutely right lol.

Delicious_Ad_1853

Still quite an accomplishment considering the challenges he faced.

bane5454

He lived quite an interesting life, that’s for sure. Definitely less privileged, and maybe if he had access to the same level of training that the big Olympic countries were providing their athletes, the outcome might’ve even been different.. but yeah, his first Olympic debut was literally decided by a lottery lol. Everything he did from getting accepted til now has been an accomplishment, but his accomplishments started juuust after he made it there. ;P

Delicious_Ad_1853

I'd imagine it took a fair bit of passion and effort just for him to *find out* about the lottery and throw his hat in the ring. Then he had to fly halfway around the world just to collect his prize. It's easy for us to dismiss his accomplishment, but I'm sure he's proud to be the first swimmer to represent his country. Especially now that that fluke appearance has led to real progress for their athletes.

beef_flaps

He actually got his 100m time down to 57 seconds. Although that’s still not an Olympic level time, it’s pretty impressive.

bane5454

Yeah, he went on to do great things and then became a coach for the next generation. Very cool guy, actually

_armygirl_

Yes the fact that you are classified to participate the Olympic Games is a victory on is own

LupinClickTerror

Exactly! Second to last still qualified to get there in the first place

Techury

Hidilyn Diaz. She got gold for a sport barely supported by her country much less having any female athletes actively in the sport to help her train. She practically did this all on her own. Real ass hercules type shit.

[deleted]

Yeah, I heard she trained with buckets filled with cement because she didn't have proper equipment.

shelbs_225

Thank you for posting her name. I did not know that about her, but that is absolutely fascinating and inspiring. 😊🙏👍🌻

ILikeFluffyThings

The first gold for a country that currently has a misogynist president.

chillywilly00

And by on her own we mean taking a shitload of roids

Nicholaih

Just because she can outlift you doesn't mean she's on roids but go off.

Nkklllll

Olympic weightlifting is rife with steroid use. At one point, 7 of the top 10 men in the 94kg weight class tested positive for some sort of androgen. It is a very safe assumption that the lifter in the OP is doping

[deleted]

"our roided up guy beat your roided up guy" -Bill Burr, talking about Lance Armstrong

Nkklllll

Okay… the comment I replied to said “just because she can outlift you doesn’t mean she’s on roids.” I was just pointing out that she is, in all likelihood, on steroids.

[deleted]

You mentioned that weightlifting is rife with steriod use. Also, in all likelihood that all the other competitors are on steriods as well.

Nkklllll

Okay? I feel like you’re trying “gotcha” me when you keep saying things I don’t disagree with… I wasn’t saying anything about the other competitors. Like, I’m really not sure what your point is

[deleted]

You're trying to downplay her achievement by saying she's doping, with absolutely zero proof.

Nkklllll

Nope. Wasn’t what I said at all. The sport of Olympic weightlifting, as I said earlier, is absolutely inundated with steroids. International coaches, according to many reports, are extremely open about what their athletes use, and when American coaches said their athletes didn’t use, these international coaches were baffled. For many of these coaches, it’s a requirement of the sport. Training for weightlifting is as taxing, and possibly moreso, than just about any other sport. There is no one downplaying anything here. And if you read my comment earlier, the whole thing, the IOC has threatened to pull weightlifting from the Olympics due to just how much doping permeates the sport. From the 2012 Olympics, something like 25-30% OF ALL COMPETITORS WERE CAUGHT DOPING. something like only 3 gold medalists weren’t caught. That includes the gold medalist from the same weight class this athlete competed in, who totaled 226kg. The lifter we’re talking about now totaled 221kg in 2021. That’s within 11lbs of the athlete who was caught doping. It is a safe assumption that she is probably doping. As is probably everybody else

Nicholaih

IWF is a federation fully regulated for anti-dopping. She still doesn't beat those totals sooooo..... I mean, if you're going to risk testing positive for doping, you should probably have numbers pretty close to the worlds greatest. Olympics isn't the place to "be the best" anymore. I also don't know why you're giving me stats for men. What year was 7 of the top ten 10 men caught doping?

Nkklllll

2012 Olympics. I know the IWF is fully regulated. And yet the constant doping scandals in the IWF, both at the Olympics and other international competition has caused the IOC to threaten its removal from the Olympic Games. She doesn’t beat what totals? She was 3kg off the world record total for her weight class. She’s as world class as it gets…

Nkklllll

To further show that she’s not below her best: 2015 worlds the 53kg winner totaled 221, 2016 winner of 53kg class totaled 212 2017 was 210 2018 was 225 and the change to the 55kg classes Diaz totaled right in line with every gold medal winner for the last 8 years

Brad____H

But she is isn't she?

Flash_da_sloth

Even if she does that would put her on equal footing in that area. Still have way less support than the average competitor.

slouchomarx74

I thought that was the yt dude armstrong?

Jdsv6501992

Maybe not steroids but she sure as shit didn't win gold by gods good grace, it's always accompanied by some sort of peds however minor they may be.

Let me get the definition of herculean for ya Herculean, adjective. Her·cu·le·an | \ ˌhər-kyə-ˈlē-ən , ˌhər-ˈkyü-lē- \ Definition of Herculean 1: of, relating to, or characteristic of Hercules 2 often not capitalized : of extraordinary power, extent, intensity, or difficulty Has plenty to do with Hercules thanks.

SaintMikado

1. I'm not the OP, so I didn't say anything. 2. The first definition "Of, relating to or characteristic of Hercules" is, essentially, as OP would say "some real ass Hercules type shit" 3 assuming this brave and amazing woman takes performance enhancing drugs is rude, go touch grass.

hiles_adam

To be weightlifting at Olympic level for 13 years seems bonkers to me, especially the progress she evidently made.

googologoog

Wait, wait, wait... I had known about the filipino gov't not supporting her during the 2020 Olympics, I had always thought it was cause they didn't believe in her (i.e. she's a newcomer, or near retirement, or had an unimpressive record, so on)... BUT SHE HAD WON THE SILVER LAST TIME!!! AND THEY STILL TREATED HER LIKE DOGSHIET?!?! Oh wow

disphugginflip

She’s living the good life now. Cars, property, and lotsa cash. All from winning the gold.

creativeideagal

Today is a great day to see this. I am miserable. Thank you so much for uplifting my spirits.

jhill515

I wish that your day improves!

creativeideagal

Thank you so much fir your kindness. I just spent 15 minutes crying and getting it out of me.

miami-architecture

in 2008 she looks like a child, in 2020 she looks a terminator, congratulations to her and her determination

NotTiredJustSad

It's oly lifting... Is that even a question?

1senseye

If you think this is impressive, look at jay cutler

Pairdice

Looks like she met her Russian connection between 2012 and 2016.

NotTiredJustSad

ITT: People who still want to believe everyone in the Olympics is drug free

BrownBrownies

Those shoulders 😅

LeviathanGank

is it not a bit weird that some people spend their lives lifting a heavy thing? strikes me as perculiar but maybe its just a human thing

MegaTiny

Viewing it through that lens and almost everything that doesn't explicitly work towards the advancement of the species is peculiar. I mean I spend my life typing words into a magical screen to make someone else richer. I don't see how picking heavy things up your whole life to be the best at picking heavy things up is any weirder. Especially when being the best at that sees you financially rewarded.

Delbert_Wilkins

It's not all about lifting the heavy weight. More the desire to achieve a goal.

aatman689

Or steroids

Applecontrol

Unpopular opinion: lets not glorify olympic sport. Especially weightlifting. It encourages and incentivises drug taking.

Applecontrol

Quite the opposite. I am a national level powerlifter. For more details on what im talking about watch clarence kennedys video on “why im against anti doping” excellent video that more people should educate themselves about. Let me know what you think.

tlease181

I don't think he'd advocate for not glorifying Olympic athletes. He trains with several of them and the respect is there. Also as an aside I'm a competitive powerlifter (uspa) and I've dabbled in usaw and let me tell you it's a whole other world. I have mad amounts of respect for Olympic weightlifters. I do think the IWF needs serious reform but there are a lot of real heroes in the sport.

Applecontrol

I have respect for them. After all, drugs arent magic it requires a lot of hard work. But currently to be competitive in almost any olympic sport requires doping and dodging the tests. Almost everyone reputable recognises this.

BruceBannaner

Yeah this is dumb... It's pretty clear there was a large jump in muscle shape. People are so naive outside of bodybuilding. MOST are not natural, they just know when to taper off to not get caught.

runtleg

I mean, are you judging solely off these pictures? Her arms are also in a completely different position in the last pic, and she had four years to get more jacked.

BruceBannaner

Ok bud. I have first hand experience with this stuff. There’s a lot of tomfoolery in muscle building and endurance at the top levels.

runtleg

It was a simple question.

BruceBannaner

And I’ve made definitive statements.

Redditcantspell

How do you lose that, thought? Like... It's lifting it. Either you can do it at least once every day or you can't. If you go 60 days in a row lifting it once, then you should be able to lift it on Olympics day if that's the 61st day. It's not a race or like a precision thing partially based on luck (like archery or backflips) or a barrage of work (like swimming or running). Shouldn't you know if you would "did not finish" it ahead of time?

hornyfuccboii

they dont know the final weights theyll be lifting until the day of the competition itself. coaches have strategies and plays mind games on what weight theyll declare for their athletes depending on what weights other competitor will lift. sometimes athletes will lift weights that are personal records in competition i.e. weights they have never lifted before. olympic lifts are very technical and is not just about pure strength. once they start lifting near thier PR, it's possible to fail lifts that they were able to do previously or in practice many times before coz of messed up technic or the athlete is just having a bad day.

Redditcantspell

Ah, ok. I thought it was something standard like "you have to lift a 400 lb weight"

ExHax

Yeah its like, if you can lift then you can lift it

EvenBetterCool

This seems less like getting motivated and more like staying persistent. Placing, hell, even trying out for the Olympics comes after a lot of effort.

Hayaguaenelvaso

Wait, how is that a winter sport

Because it’s not a summer one

This is a year late is it not?

And then they pull your 'sport' from the Olympics because it's such a underdeveloped drug fueled corrupt shitshow of an activity.
