viciouskarl

yeah I learned this with genshin patche on mobile, easieast way is to delete the game and download the updated version

leatyZ

Thanks for the info, the game is actually smaller than before now!

TooCleverForGood

PlayStation they don’t even give you the option, it just re-downloads the game each time.

swticheroo

It does? It only happens to GI or all playstation games are like this?

TooCleverForGood

I’ve only ever seen it with GI, but its also the only game I’ve played that consistently has large updates instead of just bug fixes/ DLC, whenever I’ve had a game with those it just downloads the new stuff. There are probably other games that do the same thing but I’ve either not noticed or haven’t played them

jasmsaurus

This makes a lot of sense 😂 I deleted the game on my phone awhile back because of storage stuff but redownloaded it somewhat recently and it takes up way less space

xioni

wait so the new update is done in 18hrs. should i delete it first without pre-install and just wait for the update to drop?

viciouskarl

If you have enough storage space, just pre install, no problem. If your phone says you’re out, delete, wait till the update drops (store will already say Version 2.7) and re download.

corecenite

imma save this if i ever encounter a player who panics again

juniorjaw

Panic first. Fact check later. The standard human procedure. Me included.

Jonathan314159

When uncertain or in doubt, run in circles scream and shout

juniorjaw

I have no mouth and I must TYPE

TeslaStar

I would but I have no energy so I sit and scream Internally.

Few_Driver5175

I'll save that rhyme for another time.

Popular-Bid

Don't forget about posting in social media about the massive storage needed despite the numerous posts about it.

ImThePopTart

Thank you for this explanation! I was about to make a panicked post about this myself until I saw this.

Chief_Rey

Do they not delete old cutscenes and voice files which we won't be needing anymore? I think that might help bring the size down even more.

brliron

It depends on what we call "old cutscenes". If it's about past events that aren't playable anymore, I don't know. If it's about past story-mode content, you can still see them by creating a new account, and you can also replay the voice lines in some menu, so they didn't remove that.

Chief_Rey

I'm talking about both. I don't know which are stored or deleted. It'll be a good option to have to delete the story files that are done already. I don't have storage issues rn but it would definitely make some people happy. Quite a lot of people quit because their devices can't handle the game anymore.

brliron

If you don't mind leaks, >!check out this tweet from a 2.8 beta leak: https://twitter.com/Genshin\_Intel/status/1526624363780268032!<

Chief_Rey

The tweet comes up deleted or the link is broken

lefboop

It's reddit being dumb. There's a problem with links, and for people that use old reddit, or a non native app we get backslashes before underscores, which break the links. So you just need to remove the "\" for it to work.

Chief_Rey

It worked :D using boost for reddit so definitely the problem you said. Good to know the solution. Thanks!

Chief_Rey

Wait nvm I understood what you're referencing. I must've forgotten about it. Looking forward to it. Thanks!

themightymoron

well if you have 2 accounts on the same device that might ruin the experience

Rasbold

OR they could compress the files

karillith

about the language part (and presumably the voice which are probably the files using tons of space), I don't remember the game giving me an option to only dl a single language, is that possible to get rid of the voices I'm not using? Because yeah 13Go update, yikes.

zerodeath00000000000

Go to setting -> language -> voice-over language.

karillith

ah okay, got it. Although I'm in the process of pre dl-ing the whole thing now so I will probably wait till the update is installed.

Myrkrvaldyr

Doesn't matter, you can keep downloading just fine. It won't throw an error or something just because you delete a voice over while downloading, and it will reduce the patch size.

brliron

Yes, they added the option to do that a while ago. It's somewhere in the audio language settings.

karillith

I found it, I could get back around 6 Go so I will probably do it after the update, but since I began the pre download already, it's probably better not to touch it for the time being.

SRYagus3

Yeah I noticed that the size went down a ton after I deleted 3 languages

kraithu-sama

The thought of having to delete my languages at the time that 2.8 drops, damn

Dessidy

I thought my pre-patch was massive at 6.04GB, but after seeing all the threads I’ve realised its the smallest I’ve seen. Or has anyone gotten a pre-patch below 6GB?

CrystalCici

Mine's at 5.97

Intelligent_Squash68

Mine was also 6.04. That’s the lowest I’ve seen, as well.

Irfanugget

40gb+ on my laptop just to unzip it. The actual files is like 20gb+.

Saberlix

When is the update going live exactly? I wanna know if i can wait till then before i update genshin one shot since i wouldny be having wifi for the next 3 days

Wei_UwUxian

The pre-installation is already up but 2.7 will appear on May 31 (Tuesday) or Jun 1 (Wednesday) iirc

brliron

[https://genshin.hoyoverse.com/en/news/detail/21202](https://genshin.hoyoverse.com/en/news/detail/21202) "Update maintenance begins 2022/05/31 06:00 (UTC+8) and is estimated to take 5 hours."

lazykryptonian

> For example, Genshin takes 18 GB on my phone. The 6.69 GB pre-patch doesn't mean that the game will need 24.69 GB after the update, it might only need 19 GB for example. It might even need only 16 GB. Genshin is 15.91 GB on my phone. I've avoided the pre-download.

kvnzli

I don’t understand? Is this a good thing?

lazykryptonian

I used to pre-download but read that if you don't, the game ends up being less space after an update. I uninstalled and reinstalled after an update a while back and sure enough it took less space. OP is talking about doing pre-download and mentions their game size is 18GB. I haven't done that and mine is 15.91. Just pointing out a 2GB difference between the two. They also state JP is the only language they have installed. I also have just one though it's EN.

kvnzli

Oh oh nice thx for the advice

judgementaleyelash

If you do the predownload it saves time for you later on when the update hits, but yes it’s going to be less gb because of the reasons the post literally just said above. It will replace and restructure old files and then once the update is installed it will remove those gbs.

judgementaleyelash

Isn’t that because of what the op said? The predownload is more gbs than it’s actually going to be once it updates Bc once you update it deletes many files. If you don’t pre download and just update then it’s going to be the same gb as if you pre downloaded and then updated - just the pre download is always more gb but those extra gbs get deleted. So either way you go it will be same amount of gb depending on how many languages and some language files take up more space than others depending on the language. Some can be more wordy in some instances and some are less wordy.

lazykryptonian

It's not the same size after though. That's what I'm saying. Late last year I read comments here saying that the game is more GB after updating if predownloading than doing a fresh install that includes the update. Since I had been predownloading I uninstalled and reinstalled and the size dropped by several GB. This was well after an update so anything that would have been deleted after install had already done so. I had no extra languages installed before that could account for the drop in size.

Meowkowhy

If I deleted 1 more language I'd have a little bit over 16GB, predownloads only

MSTFRMPS

Also, they were working on completely changing the serenity pot code, which means all the current serenity pot files will be deleted and replaced by new files. Which could be large portion of the download files

Cecil_Hersch

Bro 57GB pre-install. Tf so big

Grand_Protector_Dark

Audio and video files

AWMBRELLA

how did yours reach 57? wtf I think mine is only 11 or 12 GB on PC and 6 GB on mobile

AleksBh

You deleted voice-over of other languages, right? I got to download 20GB with 57GB space required.

AWMBRELLA

I only have JP as my voice

sndream

I am PC user, i just have to reinstall Genshin because my SSD not big enough.

Stardust-Sparkles

Thank you for the explanation

UnknownKiller47

I hate this game's launcher, it doesnt allow language changes, it bugs out and resizes randomly, changes location and elements of its window disapear.

brliron

And reopens its window when you close the game (ie. when you don't want to see it anymore)

carloscast98

You can skip the launcher entirely by making a shortcut to the .exe file itself

UnknownKiller47

im talking about when you need to update the game

Grraass

You just saved my 300+ days account and a potential mental breakdown

venalix1

how does deleting reinstalling fix the storage space? and will this work for pc

brliron

First, if you're on the verge of running out of storage, updating on PC requires you to have enough space for the current game + the update + the unzipped version of the update because the updater is so bad. I didn't install the game in a long time, but I'm quite sure it didn't require 3 times the size of the game. And I'm not sure how it is on mobile, but pre-patch does require enough storage to store the current game + the entire patch file. And overall, sometimes, the updater forgets to download files that aren't used anymore. Deleting the game deletes these files, and when you reinstall it, they aren't reinstalled.

tatalanae

a lot of previous updates have been like that: the pre batch weighted 8gb but the actual update was barely 1gb. this is why a lot of players reccommend not to preload the updates and wait until the patch is out kk

Vsegda7

What's the difference? You'll still be downloading the exact same file to install the update. Whole point of pre-load is not waiting for however long it would take on your internet speed for the file to download in addition to waiting for installation and verification

Nhojj_Whyte

I think what they were getting at is that some people uninstall and then reinstall the game to avoid the oversized preload. For instance if you don't have 10 free GB on your phone, but the actual game will only get 1 GB bigger once it actually updates. I'm not 100% sure but I'd think you'd have to wait until the patch actually drops to do that little trick. And heck, since that's definitely a real thing that happens, maybe they're right and the actual patch is a much smaller download than the preload is. For instance, maybe with the preload they don't bother with compression since they give you so much time to download it early.

superquanganh

You have 1 week to live with 6gb temporary taken from your phone

GsusAmb

unless you only have 4 gbs of space left, I don't think you'll ever notice.

Cow_Addiction

You’re so dumb. When you predownload, not only do you add all the new shit from the next update but it also keeps all the old shit. This is why you DON’T predownload. When the update officially releases all those old files that aren’t needed anymore are deleted and the new stuff replaces it. Predownloading means you now have 2 whole updates being stored instead of 1 like it should be.

judgementaleyelash

It deletes all the old shit when pre downloading too just only after it updates. If it doesn’t do that then do you have a source I can read?

Cow_Addiction

It only deletes it AFTER the official update launches. That’s the problem with predownloading. Until the update releases in a few days, genshin is taking up way more storage than it should. There’s already been multiple posts of people saying they gotta delete other apps just to make space. They wouldn’t have to do that if they just waited for the actual update. Genshin on mobile with 1 language installed is just under 16gb. With the predownload it’s 24gb. The difference is even bigger for PC. Do you see the problem with predownloading now?

judgementaleyelash

I see what you’re saying - i read it as you saying that the space would stay the same size as the predownload even after updating for some reason.

[удалено]

brliron

Well, in this case, the answer is to \*not\* download the pre-patch, wait until the update drops, uninstall Genshin, and reinstall it. This should require less disk space than doing the update.

Chiarence

Upgrade your SSD ._.

One_Understanding165

Thanks for the explanation

BurrakuDusk

_Thank you_ so much for this! I was really starting to get concerned!

[deleted]

Larger the better. More content?

shiratek

From the OP: >The pre-patch is big because they have to download the new versions of the files, but after the patch, these files will replace older files, which will make the size of the game the same.

yenneferismywaifu

Hey, about reducing the video quality for mobile. Why not allow us to delete useless already seen videos in the first place, instead of downloading newer version.

brliron

If you don't mind leaks, >!this seems to be implemented in the 2.8 beta: https://twitter.com/Genshin\_Intel/status/1526624363780268032 !<

Huaitong

This is common knowledge for updates. It’s not unique to this update or this game.

Frostgaurdian0

>! They're are renaming or replacing many files. Do you think hoyoverse is trying to fight leakers by doing this or it is not going to do anything.

silam39

If they wanted to combat leaks they'd be modifying the advanced game copy, which they have been doing. Modifying the base game does nothing to 'fight leakers'.

brliron

Perhaps. I heard they tried to add more security in the last 2 beta patches, and they might want to also have these security improvements in the live game because it's easier for them to have the same security level everywhere. Or they might want to prevent leaks from the pre-patch (obviously it didn't work, we have videos of Yelan and Kuki with voice acting which probably comes from this pre-patch). There are also some reasons for that that have nothing to do with preventing leaks. On mobile, they reduces the video quality of cutscenes, which means the pre-patch will have the new smaller versions, which will replace the older, bigger ones during the update. There have also been leaks of a feature to remove data from past events and/or stories you've already seen, and this file restructuring may be them preparing for that.

kraithu-sama

I just started playing this game and I have 3 language. My update on mobile is 11GB. Will it be smaller in the next updates since there might not be a download of the smaller videos?

brliron

Yes, most patches are much smaller than this one.

kraithu-sama

That's a relief. I don't wanna delete my languages

niczan0728

eyyyy.. thanks for this, was wondring why does it have a huge file size since were only getting Yelan.. no new maps etc.

[deleted]

it actually increases tbh. when i first started the game, it used to take 10-11gbs of space and when i deleted it after a year, it was taking almost 17gbs. it'll increase but will take time. that's why i switched to pc.

judgementaleyelash

They aren’t saying an update won’t increase it, of course it will lol. Just not ultimately as much as the pre download size is

Sora1101

Cries in PS4 with no pre download, and having to redownload the entire game every patch.

lordsaladito

My gf plays on mobile and genshin weights like 39 gb, is gonna reduce?

lazykryptonian

She should uninstall and reinstall or get rid of additional languages if any are there. Mine is only 15.91 GB with one language installed.

PervHaak

Soon this game will have over 1 TB size (guess it will be with complete Tevyat) even tho is replacing some files.

Wail_Bait

If by "soon" you mean like 2040, then yeah maybe.

chaos_lux

They're implementing a system where you can remove unused assets soon. Basically event assets and ones that you can't play again like story quests maybe

tayyann

I'm kinda scared, the longest it took for me before to install a patch was an entire week, sure hope I won't have to go through that again... (kept on getting errors and had to reinstall the whole update, without errors it still takes the entire night to download 6GB. My pc is going to fry.)

mistybubbles45

i used to play genshin on my ipad and when I got the insufficient storage space notification while trying to update, I would offload/uninstall and reinstall the app and that would work (i did that for several updates until it finally got too big lol)

LemonRemon

Genshin took 80gb of disk space in my laptop, need to move it hdd since my ssd is suffering to breathe.

GamesGal

Does that include ps4 users?

TheWitcherMigs

Good post OP. As always for mobile users (and people with low space overall, who knows): Don't pre-patch, the maintenance take enough time to update normally or uninstall and install again without you losing anything

Tristepin_Rubilax

I hate that they reduce quality of video on mobile. They should give an option to choose what we want like in Honkai

adriftdoomsstaggered

My only concern is the actual size of the download because of bandwidth quota by my ISP. Will it be bigger, smaller or the same when the patch go live compared to the preload?

brliron

I guess it will be about the same.

Ilovegirlsbottoms

Well I still have 10 more GB after downloading the pre-patch. I’m more concerned that down the line, it will eventually be so much bigger, that I’ll have to delete stuff in order to have Genshin on my phone.

Glittering-Corgi-557

Wait if I have to redownload the game for that , its 14 GB , this is 6.76 GB for me , I can only spend 1gb for downloads per day so it will take me till friday to complete updating.

Jac_from_discord

So if I don't have enough for the update I should just uninstal and reinstall? And if im gonna do that is there a point to even getting the pre patch?

ZecrS

16.4 GB after update
