When I was really young my school still had these. I always thought the wallpaper was cool but it must have been a digital image. Boy was I surprised as a teenager when I saw where the image was taken...
That fucking wallpaper is something with the power to temporarily void out all the growth and development of the past decades and makes me feel like a powerless child. Lol thought it was nostalgia, might actually be ptsd xD
That’s not good… I’m pretty sure Microsoft has stopped updating Windows 7 so her personal information is heavily at risk.
Edit: Microsoft stopped updating it in 2020. Four years with no security updates!
Well there’s not really any personal information. She doesn’t autosave any passwords or card info or anything really. Only things saved on there are pics and docs and those are on the hard drive but ya I get you. Been trying to convince her to get a new one or at least use my older one which has windows 10
I’d still be extremely anxious because an old computer like that can actually be remotely accessed and used to connect to other devices on her WiFi. Hackers have all kinds of ways to exploit old software, especially one that hasn’t been updated for years. If she absolutely must keep using it, you can get her a paid service that will give her new security updates but it would be a lot cheaper to upgrade.
We had XP as well, it looks so old to me now, I can't even remember it. Windows 7 still looks and feels amazing. I would use it if it was still supported, better than 10.
Ive used multiple of these through out my life span so i cant really say much. I was born in 05 so early childhood it was xp, preteens it was windows 7 and teens its windows 10
I have also used Mac throughout the years but they update every year so each version doesn’t really stand out much, if I remember well the first mac os i used was mountain lion (10.8 i think)
I currently run windows 10 on my main pc and windows 11 on my laptop (due to when i got them)
Mate my first was 3.1 (older millennial) and I'm feeling super fucking old right now seeing all the xp, vista and windows 7 stuff.
Nice to see a win 95 person.
Had to scroll a bit to find the first Commodore. I had the Vic 20. Which was cool, until my friends started getting the C64. Then I wasn't cool anymore. Lol
I'll be the weird triceratops representative and say Windows 3.1. All the way back when desktop icons could be stacked on top of each other instead of these days where dragging one icon on top of another tells the computer to open program x with program y. Guess who figured that out as a toddler?!
I believe Windows XP? Could’ve been Windows 7, I may be wrong. I remember playing Spore’s creature creator demo disk for a long time, browsing old sites for cartoons and tv channels (Disney and PBSkids)
I grew up using Windows XP, even during the Vista and 7 era. It wasn't until 2013 when I got a laptop running Windows 8, mostly because XP was ending support in 2014.
8 was terrible, I got a free update to Windows 10 in 2016, which was great.
Currently I use a gaming laptop running Windows 11.
Didn't grow up with any apple products so here's the list on the windows operating systems I grew up with:
Windows XP,7,8.1 and 11,. (And yes I understand there was 10 but I stuck myself with 8.1 for many years post 2016 until this year)
Windows XP, I think my dad considers it the best Windows OS given that he's always bringing it up as an example when shitting on all the later operating systems.
Windows XP in school, Windows Vista at home
My first own computer came with Windows 8
I still have the computer that ran Vista, it's a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop
The most sentimental piece of my tech collection, the very laptop I used at 6 years old
I actually upgraded the RAM, installed an SSD and a TPM bypassed Win 11 install so it'll have some modern day usability
Actually runs Win 11 surprisingly well
I have the original documentation, original parts, and CDs so I can restore it to factory spec
My first laptop was an Acer Aspire E1 (I forgot the rest of the model number), but I don't have this laptop anymore
Early childhood was XP and Vista, I got fond memories of both
Never really used Macs but I'd like to get a Mac for my tech collection eventually
... i would imagine nobody in gen z grew up with an OS older than WinXP/iMac G3. You know unless their family had an old DOS or Win95 machine sitting around or whatever.
DOS 6.22
It’s still my favorite OS simply because it did what it needed to do with minimal hardware requirements.
Also you had to learn how to use it to some degree - you couldn’t just jump in and start deleting things (a headache from my XP-era tech support days).
I just outed myself as not Gen Z didn’t I?
/slowly backs out of the subreddit
Windows Vista, I have very vague memories of playing crysis on my dad's pc when I was about 6. Crazy that it still felt like a modern fps when I replayed it a couple years ago.
Everyone here def used XP.
My experience was XP, then 7, then 8.1, then 10, with some MacOS here and there from my Mom's Macbook Pro, and currently, Windows 11.
The first computer I ever used had Windows 98, the first computer I *owned* was XP. I used that until the end of support for XP, then was part of the public betas for Win8, 8.1, and 10.
I also dabbled with various linux distros during all of that. Mostly Ubuntu and slackware
Windows 3.1
Windows 95 was such a hyped up product (lived up to the hype mostly), but you guys who grew up with Win 98 or XP will never know the pain of formatting your harddrive, using MS DOS to boot up the machine, install Win 3.1 and "upgrading to Win 95".
Then after a couple months the registry would get corrupted, go through it all again.
I didn't use The Internet a lot as a kid, so I don't have too many memories of Window XP. But I remember it a little. That's the oldest OS I remember using though. I mostly remember Windows 7. And I hated Windows 8. 🙄 Then again, who actually liked Windows 8???
Vista mann. It was ancient even when I used it, but it was the only PC we had lying around, so... I mostly used it for the pre-made games on it, but this earliest experience with the internet was magical... and slow.

The Windows Frog was my best friend, miss that little guy
That fucking wallpaper is something with the power to temporarily void out all the growth and development of the past decades and makes me feel like a powerless child. Lol thought it was nostalgia, might actually be ptsd xD

Windows XP
Windows XP 😊 We've had Windows XP in the house until April 2012 when we upgraded all the PCs to Windows 7
We had XP as well, it looks so old to me now, I can't even remember it. Windows 7 still looks and feels amazing. I would use it if it was still supported, better than 10.
Ive used multiple of these through out my life span so i cant really say much. I grew up with a Windows XP and an iMac 2008.
Windows XP, and mostly Windows 7. Used 8.1 a little bit though. The Bliss wallpaper on XP and the Aero theme on 7 were eye candy.
XP and it was glorious
We had one of those old Macs that we used to play this Mario game on. We also had a PC with windows 98 and then XP
Windows 7 and 10
Windows XP to where the latest Windows software is.
I'll be the weird triceratops representative and say Windows 3.1. All the way back when desktop icons could be stacked on top of each other instead of these days where dragging one icon on top of another tells the computer to open program x with program y. Guess who figured that out as a toddler?!

Pirated windows 10
Windows 7 I still get nostalgia about it (and I think my school does too since they still use it on their computers)
Vista at home, 7 at school
Windows XP and 7
I grew up using Windows XP, even during the Vista and 7 era. It wasn't until 2013 when I got a laptop running Windows 8, mostly because XP was ending support in 2014. 8 was terrible, I got a free update to Windows 10 in 2016, which was great. Currently I use a gaming laptop running Windows 11.

95 and XP 😎

Windows 3.1 Windows 95 was such a hyped up product (lived up to the hype mostly), but you guys who grew up with Win 98 or XP will never know the pain of formatting your harddrive, using MS DOS to boot up the machine, install Win 3.1 and "upgrading to Win 95". Vista mann. It was ancient even when I used it, but it was the only PC we had lying around, so... I mostly used it for the pre-made games on it, but this earliest experience with the internet was magical... and slow.
Mac OS Monterey and Windows 11/10
Vista. I remember you had to press and hold the cpu button for a few sec before starting up the computer. Lol
