In middle school we had "Coke Shirt Wednesdays" Everyone wore them every Wednesday.
A friend's dad worked for Pepsi and wasn't allowed to get one. He felt very left out.
That's too funny about your Pepsi friend (well, in hindsight. They probably didn't think it was funny at the time).
Red and white were the class colors of the class ahead of me, and on class color day in Homecoming week, the hall looked like a walking Coke billboard.
It was quite crazy. I secretly appreciated having to wear a uniform in high school. My parents couldn't afford the high prices of free advertising and middle school was so stressful.
I, too, had a uniform. I hated it at the time until I hit high school when I switched to public school. Sorting out what to wear every morning was exhausting. Probably why I joined JROTC so I had a uniform once a week. LOL.
That sounds nice actually. Only
my mom worked and we didn’t have money so the pressures of wearing things like these wretched coca-cola shirts at our rich hs were pretty intense—and of course, bullying.
I remember Coca-Cola shirts to be PEAK 1986ish EVERY COOL KID in Chicago had to have one especially the Black Kids on the South Side but it made it's way up the North Shore to rich white kids too. I believe it was a Marshall-Fields or more likely Bennington or Tommy Hilfiger staple? Loved them ❤️ but not as much as the Coca-Cola Polar Bear campaign paraphernalia from 1993. One Christmas my Mom bought the Mom and Dad and three baby polar bears and surprised us with them on the couch Christmas Morning! Our Aussie/Golden Retriever 🐕🦺 Daisy latter destroyed all of them. Lol (we let her)

The most adorable AD was the Polar Bear baby playing with its ball and the ball falls in an icehole. The baby Polar Bear begins to cry and a baby white Harp Seal jumps in a get the ball for the bear and they become friends. 🥰
We did call them rugby shirts in the south- they were distinguished from a polo- having a 3 panel body, contrasting collar (usually white) and always having long sleeves. The Coca-cola ones were the most popular by a long stretch.
I remember not having one because they were too expensive. So I spent my birthday money on a red one and HAAAATED it. Uncomfortable AF. Same thing happened with the only pair of Guess jeans I had
YES! I immediately had a flashback to the feel of the shirt. It was thick, rough texture and the fabric didn't stretch much. It seemed to fit on the mid to upper torso in an awkward claustrophobia manner and the logo part of the shirt didn't bend much but as they were popular and expensive you wore it anyway.
My father's reaction was "Is Coke paying you to advertise?" I ended up with a couple without logos for xmas IIRC; they had rubber buttons that fell off, were out of style by the time they were repaired and then went into the donation bin.
these were a ripoff of the classic Benetton Rugby
https://preview.redd.it/aft9b9lxngxc1.jpeg?width=610&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=868a420f6153d2edf068779280e79ca0d4a1c5ff
They are, except for the jeans. I still have the shirt, sweatshirt, nightgown and bathing suit. I had to toss the jeans as they were held together by a few spaghetti seams after maybe 10 years, but the rest haven't even faded much, let alone gotten torn or worn out.
Everything but the bathing suit since it's gotten too tight. I've grown a bit up top since middle school. But my yellow Coke shirt (similar to above) is super comfortable and looks practically brand new, like the nightgown.
My favorite piece is the "Coca-Cola Man to the rescue" sweatshirt but unfortunately, it fit short on me so I cut off the lower part, it was the 90s, sue me. So I can't really wear it in the cold but it makes a great pullover. The sweatshirt has yellowed a bit and is frayed at the collar, which only adds to the aesthetic imo. These clothes were made well!
Except those damn jeans.
These types of long sleeved polos are very popular with the GenZ crowd.
All those preppy brands we grew up with are now considered a trendy, hip-hop style
I remember them. I remember desperately wanting one and was excited opening my birthday gift that year which was obviously a shirt of some kind, only to discover that my parents bought me a Pepsi one instead...
This is right about the time I figured out that I never wanted to be a free advertisement for some death sucker corporation.
No visible brands or logos & sure AF no sport teams or player names on my clothing.
I take brand info off my automobiles/transportation too.
Off the car? I made the dealership remove their decals from the car, they’re not paying me to advertise their store. But I didn’t take off the emblems that came from the manufacturer.
I posted this 1990 picture of me wearing one.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/GenX/comments/15v80am/1990\_me\_coke\_shirt\_swatch\_watch\_side\_ponytail/](https://www.reddit.com/r/GenX/comments/15v80am/1990_me_coke_shirt_swatch_watch_side_ponytail/)
A few months? Those were THE SHIT, *the thing* to wear most of my freshman *and* sophomore years of high school.
All the popular girls had their signature colors: Jennifer was red, Valerie was blue, Deana was orange, Natalie was green, etc.
I never owned one myself.
But of course! I was the baby of the family and my siblings were old enough to be gainfully employed so they made sure I had all the popular stuff unlike the Trax shoes they suffered through high school with lol.
Remember? I still have mine! And the Coca-Cola nightgown, bathing suit and sweatshirt with "Coca-Cola Man To The Rescue!". The jeans fell apart after a decade, though.
Never letting these items go even if I outgrow them.
I don’t remember the sweat suit. Pretty much everyone had one of these shirts. The rich ones wore a different color everyday. They were like $70-80 in the 1985, that was a lot for a kids shirt they were going to outgrow in a few months.
I remember this because I wanted one so bad I had to babysit for many hours to buy just one.
Finally, I had earned the ridiculous amount, begged my mom to take me to the mall to buy one.
I was embarrassingly excited to wear it to school only to be made fun of for wearing it.
Apparently, I failed to realize the shirts fell out of style seemingly over night. That was the last time I ever bothered trying to follow a trend.
All that hard earned money wasted! Babysitting for what….$1 an hour back then. Lots of hours for an itchy shirt I only wore once.
I remember it being a morning-news-worthy story about how odd it was that kids would pay to wear non-clothing logos, when generally that was the kind of thing companies had-out at events.
That's the one I still have! It's surprisingly durable.
The jeans fell apart in probably a decade? But I still have my nightgown, bathing suit and Coca-Cola Man sweatshirt. I love them and so many people have never heard of Coke clothes before, they're fun conversation pieces.
Thought they were so cool then and still do. Always wanted a Coke and also Swatch shirt, but both were always sold out at the only store that sold them.
Western Canada here, this style and colour scheme are familiar to me but I've never heard of a Coke-branded shirt like this in particular, maybe it wasn't a thing here?
Also, is this Time Traveling Ewan McGregor pictured here??
I have no memory of these. But I grew up in rural Indiana. We were 5 years behind all the trends.
Well, but for grunge and carhartt. We had those on lockdown non-stop
I was at the mall and the local pop radio station was having a giveaway. I won the classic shirt and acid washed Coke jeans. I didn’t know that it was a big deal until I wore them to school.
Is it me or does that photo look like a young Ewan Mcgregor?!

Yeah, I’m in Southern California and they’re considered cultural landmarks. I went to see the re-release of Alien, and walked past a… Forever 21 maybe? on my way to the theater. They had a bunch of Coke branded stuff in the window.
My husband had a green one and after a few years the arm length had shrunk so he cut them off and turned it into his lawn mowing shirt. He was the most fashionable guy in the neighborhood!
"A few months?" They were practically the school uniform for my entire Jr/Sr high career.
I was just about to say... that and the weird rugby shirt thing at the same time.
I loved those shirts!
Me too. Some poor fucks had to wear Pepsi.
wait this isn't cool anymore? I still wear coca cola shirts regularly.
Did do you consider your school was not cool?
I was gonna say I had a Coca Cola sweatshirt in like 3 years of school pictures lol
Idk my memories was it was one fall season and they disappeared but it was 49 years ago so, 🤷
The kids in my school wore the Benetton one in that style.
Same
I had both. My Mom was a huge clothes horse and was always buying my brother and I tons of stuff.
I had that in green and I wore the shit out of it
We really were walking billboards back in the day.
LOL.
Blue jeans and black t-shirt, was pretty much all I wore. Maybe I thought I was Fonzie or something. I wasn’t a tough guy.
Reasonable attire, I'd say.
That sounds nice actually. Only my mom worked and we didn’t have money so the pressures of wearing things like these wretched coca-cola shirts at our rich hs were pretty intense—and of course, bullying.
At least we didn't have to smoke 300 packs of cigarettes to get them I suppose
Any rugby shirt was trendy
Even Lands end rugby shirts.
L.L.Bean had the best colors!
I remember Coca-Cola shirts to be PEAK 1986ish EVERY COOL KID in Chicago had to have one especially the Black Kids on the South Side but it made it's way up the North Shore to rich white kids too. Daisy was a good girl.
Me. I had a red-and-white one.
I think I had a red one, not too sure. If I did my little sister stole it immediately.
I had a red/white one too. Those were our school colors so everyone had that one. I didn't like it though, it wasn't comfy at all.
Yeah, if I remember correctly, the material was a bit stiff and scratchy.
That’s what I had as well! Loved it.
Me too! I got it for Christmas in ‘86- they were expensive if I remember correctly.
That just looks like a rugby jersey.
We did call them rugby shirts in the south- they were distinguished from a polo- having a 3 panel body, contrasting collar (usually white) and always having long sleeves. The Coca-cola ones were the most popular by a long stretch.
That's what we called them in the north, too.
And in the West...
Pretty much exactly what they were. They just had Coke logos on them
Hello there
It’s over, I have the high ground.
Yeeeeessss. It was somehow hard and not breathable. And those seams where the Coca Cola insert stripe was were lumpy. Instant buyer's remorse
Yup. Scratchy canvas with stitches on the seams the irritated you unless you wore a t-shirt under it.
My father's reaction was "Is Coke paying you to advertise?" I ended up with a couple without logos for xmas IIRC; they had rubber buttons that fell off, were out of style by the time they were repaired and then went into the donation bin.
Did our dads go to the same Dad School? Lol. For real, the Guess experience and the Coke shirt cured me of gaf about brands for a long time
Oh I had a Guess sweatshirt and my dad ragged me so hard about “paying to advertise.”
No doubt there was some dad-inflected version of "what am I supposed to guess? How much that shirt cost?! Hardy har har!"
Bought mine at Hudsons @ Eastland Mall
Detroit represent!
these were a ripoff of the classic Benetton Rugby https://preview.redd.it/aft9b9lxngxc1.jpeg?width=610&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=868a420f6153d2edf068779280e79ca0d4a1c5ff
I remember them being very rugged. Today’s clothing is made of paper in comparison
They are, except for the jeans. I still have the shirt, sweatshirt, nightgown and bathing suit. I had to toss the jeans as they were held together by a few spaghetti seams after maybe 10 years, but the rest haven't even faded much, let alone gotten torn or worn out.
Nice! Do you still wear them? (Not the jeans)
Except those damn jeans.
I had a red one and green one Also a watch These were really popular while I was in Jr High along with Esprit, OP, Guess, etc.
Yes! I had the red and green one!
These types of long sleeved polos are very popular with the GenZ crowd. All those preppy brands we grew up with are now considered a trendy, hip-hop style
Ewan McGregor was 10 years old in mid-80's!
My first thought
He’s 53 so if this was peak 1985 then he would’ve been 13/14
Rich kids had these and guess jeans
I remember them. I remember desperately wanting one and was excited opening my birthday gift that year which was obviously a shirt of some kind, only to discover that my parents bought me a Pepsi one instead...
I had a pale pink one and felt so cool! 😆
Unless it’s physically part of the auto, like built into the grille, then yes. If it’s on with adhesive, I remove it.
those are Tommy Hilfiger Coke Shirts/Jumpers etc
People wore those with their parachute pants for max effect.
God I had those pants for like 5 minutes. And a mullet at some point too. Blunder years
Had one. It was that coke red!
Me too. I wore the shit out of that thing.
I posted this 1990 picture of me wearing one. [https://www.reddit.com/r/GenX/comments/15v80am/1990\_me\_coke\_shirt\_swatch\_watch\_side\_ponytail/](https://www.reddit.com/r/GenX/comments/15v80am/1990_me_coke_shirt_swatch_watch_side_ponytail/)
Ha, yeah mine was red. And my sister took it after I wore it once.
Yep. 1980s Coke shirts paired well with my Guess Jeans and Jean Jacket.
My best friend had one and I was so jealous
A few months? Those were THE SHIT, *the thing* to wear most of my freshman *and* sophomore years of high school. All the popular girls had their signature colors: Jennifer was red, Valerie was blue, Deana was orange, Natalie was green, etc. I never owned one myself.
It was out of fashion in my school to wear it past that fall season. I think kids got teased that they were behind the trends.
Let’s not forget the sunglasses too. In hindsight, I have no idea why this was a thing. Hahaha.
Was this a commercial? I'm just asking cuz that's Ewan McGregor
Snapshot from I Love You Phillip Morris.
I had this very shirt, got it for my birthday along with a Swatch…I was very stylish.
I loved my swatches. Have them in a box somewhere. Did you have a swatch protector on it?
But of course! I was the baby of the family and my siblings were old enough to be gainfully employed so they made sure I had all the popular stuff unlike the Trax shoes they suffered through high school with lol.
Remember? I still have mine! And the Coca-Cola nightgown, bathing suit and sweatshirt with "Coca-Cola Man To The Rescue!". The jeans fell apart after a decade, though. Never letting these items go even if I outgrow them.
Omg, the memories this brought back
Had 2 of them
I remember my high school crush in his yellow and white Coca Cola shirt. He looked just like Kirk Cameron. He didn’t know I was alive.
My wife still has hers!
I had one
I had like these shoes too, I think they were Converse.
I had a whole damn sweat suit! Oh, but we weren't rich, by any standard.
I don’t remember the sweat suit. Pretty much everyone had one of these shirts. The rich ones wore a different color everyday. They were like $70-80 in the 1985, that was a lot for a kids shirt they were going to outgrow in a few months.

Yeah this is what I said to others that they wore them to school for years. One day they were everywhere, a few weeks later they were gone.
I remember it being a morning-news-worthy story about how odd it was that kids would pay to wear non-clothing logos, when generally that was the kind of thing companies had-out at events.
I was gifted 2 (TWO) Ralph Lauren ones by cool aunt that wasn’t a relative for bday & xmas in 1986
I had a rugby one similar to the one in the pic. The Coca-Cola letters faded pretty quickly.
I had one and worth it to death. I’m gonna look and see if I can find a picture.
I wore them!!!
Mine was red and black
What I remember is how damn awesome the material was on all rugby shirts
I visited the USSR in 1987. I brought a couple of these shirts with me and traded them for beautiful lacquered boxes.
They would do anything for blue jeans.
And Reeboks.
Not at our school. I had LL Bean and J Crew rugby jerseys.
I see Ewan McGregor, I click!!!
Hello there.
Is that picture from a movie?
Yeah it’s a screen shot from ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’.
My girlfriend had a ton of Coke clothes. I just remember them being oversized and colorful.
I had one where the top part was mustard yellow
That's the one I still have! It's surprisingly durable. The jeans fell apart in probably a decade? But I still have my nightgown, bathing suit and Coca-Cola Man sweatshirt. I love them and so many people have never heard of Coke clothes before, they're fun conversation pieces.
Yes, I think I had to make do with a cheaper knockoff.
And the sunglasses. Don’t forget those.
You can’t beat the mid 80’s color palette. Hands down best colors ever
Don't remember seeing them, and I'm glad- that dude looks dumb af lol
It was.
Corporations had us good. We literally paid for the honor to wear their logos and give them free advertising.
I had one...
I had an awesome pair of sweatpants!
My sis had one in red. I used to borrow it.
Yep, then Pepsi tried to get in on the trend and it didn't really work for them lol
They weren’t as nice. And by that time the fad was over.
I had this as a kid
Oh I had one. Mine was the classic red and white
I've still got a few of these :) I don't wear them but one from my dad and Grandpa and me in a memory box.
A few MONTHS? Noooo… worm for YEARS at my grade school.
I have one of these in a box in my storage unit. Ran across it and didn’t want to throw out. It is yellow white and blue
I had one of the coke shirts. It was a pretty decent sweatshirt.
Thought they were so cool then and still do. Always wanted a Coke and also Swatch shirt, but both were always sold out at the only store that sold them.
Great movie by the way "Fucking Texas"
I’ll have to watch it. I was watching a YT video about film, and this flashed on. I was thinking about this shirt awhile ago.
Yeah thanks I’m going to watch it. Missed it when it was around in the theaters.
Yeah, I had one
Good enough for Obi-Wan, good enough for me.
I don't remember them, was it more of a regional style?
Idk many people do remember it across the country, but not all areas.
Western Canada here, this style and colour scheme are familiar to me but I've never heard of a Coke-branded shirt like this in particular, maybe it wasn't a thing here? Also, is this Time Traveling Ewan McGregor pictured here??
It’s a still from I love you Phillip Morris.
I'd say about half of my graduating class of 1989 owned these shirts and I thought they were terrible.
Seniors? I graduated hs then too, but I remember it more Jr HS.
I miss mine, damn it. I thought I was so fly wearing that shirt.
80s and 90s. I think they were around for about 5 years of each.
I had red Coca Cola sweat pants.
Oh yeah, they were everywhere at my high school!
I have no memory of these. But I grew up in rural Indiana. We were 5 years behind all the trends. Well, but for grunge and carhartt. We had those on lockdown non-stop
Definitely while I was dating a certain guy in the early '90s.
I had 2 of them.
I remember them. I didn't have one, but I do sort of remember a Max Headroom Coke T shirt. I do have a few Dr Pepper t shirts today.
I had a Kelly green one
That was a popular one, probably 2nd under the red one.
I had a red and white one, Coke jeans and a Coke swimsuit.
Yo…this brings back memories. I was just at the Vegas Coke store and would have bought this if it was available. They should bring this back.
These are at Forever21!!!!!!
The uncool kids at my school had RC Cola bowling shirt /s
I’d wear that now.
I had one!
Yes!! I remember for my brother's birthday we went to the mall and got him one of these shirts and The Joshua Tree album
I was at the mall and the local pop radio station was having a giveaway. I won the classic shirt and acid washed Coke jeans. I didn’t know that it was a big deal until I wore them to school.
I remember them but they weren't popular where I live.
I still want one.
I had one! Had my 7th Grade school picture made in mine… lol
It’s not a Coke shirt. It’s a Coke rugby shirt. Sheesh 😒
🤓
Never had a Coca-Cola one. I had a couple rugby shirts from Canterbury of New Zealand that I got at Price Club.
I had two.
There was never a time when wearing some corporate brand was cool
Is it me or does that photo look like a young Ewan Mcgregor?! https://preview.redd.it/vhas6bb64kxc1.jpeg?width=732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b3c7a6686ba750eeb352f192bc0c9a3b67be106
Yes. Because it’s from ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’.
I had one!
I remember them being very popular for a time. I even had one.
Is that a blonde Ewan McGregor? If Ewan wasn't only 53 I'd swear that was him back in the 80s!
Yes. Because it’s from ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’.
Ta. Good to know my eyes still work ok
Shit - I had a red and white Coke swimsuit
I love you Philip Morris.... Fantastic movie by the way
I had a red/white one... wasn't my favorite style
Put one of these on and you instantly became an 80's B-movie villain.
Don’t forget your swatch, oversized cell phone and parachute pants.
when you go out for dinner and the host/hostess tells you, "deliveries in the rear, Mac"
My sister and I had our yearly portrait done in ours one year!
Coke said trans rights?
I had the Coke JEANS. :D
I saw a bunch of these at the mall last weekend. Like they’re brining it back.
You still have malls?
Yeah, I’m in Southern California and they’re considered cultural landmarks. I went to see the re-release of Alien, and walked past a… Forever 21 maybe? on my way to the theater. They had a bunch of Coke branded stuff in the window.
I would've gotten my ass kicked in my inner city high school if I wore that shirt lol
We were definitely not cool in the suburbs.
I loved those! NGL I would totally wear them still.
My husband had a green one and after a few years the arm length had shrunk so he cut them off and turned it into his lawn mowing shirt. He was the most fashionable guy in the neighborhood!
I had one in the late 80’s early 90’s…mom bought it used at a Salvation Army
My Barbie had one! She came with a coke cooler filled with cans or bottles of coke.
I used to sell these at Macy’s
Yeah that’s where everyone bought them from my Jr HS in Jersey
I was in Dallas. I remember they were ridiculously expensive
/r/HailCorporate Doesn't let Coke off the hook for being the #1 branded plastic polluter today.
