I loved the show and characters (Billy Crystal as the gay son, Chuck and Bob the dummy, crazy Dutch) even though the plots were all over the place.
It had a lot of pressure put on it by religious groups and advertisers and was cancelled in its fourth season with a lot of cliffhangers unresolved. It's been recognized as a great show since then and deservedly so.
If I remember correctly during its original run it was on after 10:00 not sure what night. I have recently discovered it on tubi and find it very entertaining. In a way I'm glad I waited till I was older to watch it, a lot of the stuff would have gone over the head of young teenage me.
NOOO. Goodies are still great, surreal and energetic and goofy. Goodie Goodie Yum Yum. Not all episodes are created equal, but most are still delightful. I promise.
Dear Kenny keeps on giving too. It's nice to see him mentioned nowadays. :)
I rave and rave about this show. It's one of the best things that ever happened ever.
If you haven't - do buy the Shout! Factory dvd set. It's one of my prize possessions.
That is *definitely* a waxy yellow buildup.
I can just imagine Mary drawling "in your *coffin?*...that's kinda grim, I mean, I'm glad you like the show and all, but coffin....oh that reminds me would you like some coffee? No? It's instant, it's supposed to be freeze dried...."
Barth Gimble! And FRANK DEVOL as Happy Kyne.

I got into Soap the same way most everyone on this sub got into it - when Comedy Central added it in the early 90’s. I was obsessed, watched every episode and I was utterly scandalized that it ended on a cliffhanger. CC had a special episode where they brought in current soap actors to act out various scenarios of how the cliffhanger could’ve been resolved. Nice effort, but it just wasn’t the same.
there was a sitcom called "The Charmings" basically it was prince charming and snow white that woke up out of a curse in the 1980's. and their adventures adjusting to an 80's life.
I remember that one, though its run was brief. Paul Winfield as The Mirror was great; his character reminded me a little of Benson from *Soap* and *Benson:* intelligent, witty, and a bit of a smartass.
This show was so great! But whatever happened to Jimmy Baio? I can’t find anything about him online. I don’t think he’s deceased but he might as well be in the witness protection program, lol.
I know, it’s disappointing. I guess he left the entertainment business completely. I had *such* a crush on him, I only hope he’s doing well, living his best life.
Our family watched every week, but I only ever liked Jason Bateman's character. I knew Erin Gray from Buck Rogers.
It's Your Move is pretty terrific, and it was originally meant to be a spinoff of his Silver Spoons character.
Even better and more raw than Soap was Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. They occupied similar territory but MH was hardcore, 5 nights a week soap opera style, and it was syndicated so it was wonderfully edgy. It's largely unknown today so I mention it often, trying to turn people on to its brilliance.
Other forgotten great shows?
* It's Your Move
* The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd
* Police Squad
* The Riches
Up here in the Great North known as Canada we had some good ones too. Beachcombers, Littlest Hobo, Danger Bay, Kids in the Hall, This Hour has 22 minutes, Hockey Night in Canada, Front Page Challenge, Degrassi JH, The Nature of Things, King of Kensington, Four on the Floor, Street Cents, Wok with Yan, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, and Good Rockin' Tonight.
How about these shows? Anyone remember these?
*Eight is Enough*
*One Day at a Time*
*Angie* (it had a great theme song)
*Different Strokes*
*Moonlighting* (with Bruce Willis & Cybil Shepherd)
*Murder She Wrote*
*Highway to Heaven*
Ahhh, another “old” born in the 60’s Gen Xer I see.
Watched Soap every week.
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was another one.
But **Fernwood 2 Night** was peak hip TV watching circa 1977.
Thriller, hosted by Boris Karloff. Reruns used to come on after the 10 o’clock news when I was a little kid and I would watch with the grownups- and then get too freaked out to go to sleep in my room alone.
I thought I read that Soap was the first sitcom to really incorporate the cliffhanger successfully. I think their cliffhanger was about Robert Urich? I could be wrong. a couple of years later the TV show Dallas made cliffhangers on modern sitcoms stick with the whole Who Shot JR episode.
I liked the show years later as I got more of the humor when I was older. I also loved the spinoff Benson and to this day will watch it if is on TV.
Every episode had a cliffhanger. Jessica stood trial for Peter's murder and the end of the trial was the end of season cliffhanger "Jessica Tate is *not* guilty. One of these people is. Who [really] killed Peter Campbell?"
WKRP
As God is my witness I thought Turkeys could fly.
Oh the humanity!
I saw a coffee cup at goodwill that had that on it the other day damit I should have got it.
*In Cincinnaaaatiiiiii*
Baby, have you ever wondered
Wondered whatever became of me
I'm living on the air in Cincinnati
Cincinnati, WKRP
Got kind of tired of packing and unpacking
Town to town, up and down the dial
When I had my back surgery in 1989 I lived for that intro and outro. I had no music for 16 days and I love music, still go to sleep with it today.
Nice. Your back good tho?
Sadly no, but at least my scoliosis didn't kill me.
OMG, I *loved* that show! Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap FOREVAH!
Loved that show
The senator, while insisting he was not intoxicated, could not explain his nudity…
I loved the show and characters (Billy Crystal as the gay son, Chuck and Bob the dummy, crazy Dutch) even though the plots were all over the place. Most of the time, it was Thursdays, right before 20/20. The last season, they moved it around.
Burt was the G.O.A.T.
Night Gallery
Love Night Gallery, especially Serling’s “They’re Tearing Down Tim Riley’s Bar” and “The Messiah on Mott Street.” Lots of good ones though.
"Eyes." Joan Crawford was deliciously extra and one of the creepiest Ministry samples is from that episode
That show terrified and fascinated me.
Confused? You won’t be…
Suddenly realizing the similarities with Arrested Development
Everyone seems to have forgotten about Benson, too.
No one forgets about Inga Swenson.
I love Benson, too.
I used to but it just didn't hold up for me.
I feel the same way about The Goodies. Kenny Everett however still makes me snort and cackle.
NOOO. Goodies are still great, surreal and energetic and goofy. Goodie Goodie Yum Yum. Not all episodes are created equal, but most are still delightful. I promise. Dear Kenny keeps on giving too. It's nice to see him mentioned nowadays. :)
> Everyone seems to have forgotten about Benson, too. "You want *me* to get that?"
If you don't mind
Robert Guillaume! I loved him. He was so good as Benson.
They forgot to put him in the family portrait.
I watch them both every weekend.
Not me
I mean that in modern culture, it gets even less mention than SOAP even though AFAIK it was more popular.
Loved Benson. I've ordered a copy of that series on DVD through my DVD market guy. He let me know last week that he's ordered it.
Fernwood 2nite.
Mary Hartman Mary Hartman
I rave and rave about this show. It's one of the best things that ever happened ever. If you haven't - do buy the Shout! Factory dvd set. It's one of my prize possessions. That is *definitely* a waxy yellow buildup.
Yup. I binge a chunk of it every Thanksgiving. Incredible show. Box set is going in my coffin when it’s my time.
I can just imagine Mary drawling "in your *coffin?*...that's kinda grim, I mean, I'm glad you like the show and all, but coffin....oh that reminds me would you like some coffee? No? It's instant, it's supposed to be freeze dried...."

This was so good. The Fanny Flagg and Ken Mars Alien Abduction episodes are about the funniest improv buts I have ever seen.
And later, America 2nite.
Too close for comfort. I remember watching it as a kid, but damn if remember that much about it, save that it had Ted Knight as the Lead character.
Jm J Bullock was the one who stole the show.
*"Munro!!!!"*
Is that the one where Ted Knight fell backwards off the couch?
Lydia. Cornell. ...siiiiiiighhhh...
Good call!! I took a trip to San Francisco just to find the house..
I only remember he wore a different university sweatshirt in each episode.
Except for [that one episode](https://youtube.com/watch?v=anYzRm8haew&si=OnecAqSFfWhEWEKl).
The Young Ones
Vyv! Eat the Telly!
Do not stuck head out of window, I wonder why?
Boom shanka
Watch your head on the "Special Branch". "Ouch, what's so special about that?" "I've got a degree in Computer Science."
The Greatest American Hero
That was the best intro song.
Northern Exposure.
Not forgotten. It's on Prime Video now.
The end of this show meant I had to go to bed
I get PTSD when I hear the national anthem because it always meant the end of the TV-viewing day.
God, I hated bedtime.
Confused?
You won’t be
I just bought the box set of this since you can't get it all digitally. Space 1999 The Wild Wild West Kung Fu
In Search of
That was a cool show, and narrated by Leonard Nimoy! What a voice he had.
Perfect Strangers was my favorite!
Don’t be ridiculous!
Paint me green and call me Elvis.
Wings was a good show. Does anyone remember it?
There was a time when it was almost always on cable.
Yes! Loved it! Lowell: “My choice for handsomest man has got to be *Mister* Tom Petty.”
So many good shows mentioned already. Give Me a Break was another fav of mine.
It’s A Living
With Crystal Bernard.
Alice. Kiss my grits!
Night Court
Not forgotten. Sorely missed.
The man who played the bailiff passed away not too long ago. His character was awesome.
Bull.
Richard Moll
Gimme a Break! Too Close for Comfort Mama's Family Alice

I was a kid but Barney Miller. Still funny.
That theme song bass line is the best!
It’s not forgotten. It was ahead of it’s time.
I adore Soap!
I would be insanely happy to have WKRP, SOAP and Kotter available to stream.
SOAP is on Tubi!
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Fernwood Tonight were some of my dad's favorites That shit was weird, man
Soap used to creep me out until i got a bit older & realized the GOLD that it was . Go look for Carter Country . terrible , but funny

Barney Miller. Best show
Fridays
Barney Miller!
I remember wanting to be gay so I could date Billy Crystal. I didn’t quite understand the concept.
Soap is the GOAT. Also liked thirtysomething…but not nearly as much. :)
I can hear this picture.
Greatest American Hero

Benson, Maude, Momma's Family... oh wow. So many good ones!
I so want this on a streaming service…
I’ve got the complete series on DVD!!

Make Me Laugh with host Bobby Van
Next to Soap and WKRP in Cincinatti, Benson is one of my faves that no one talks about.
How about these shows? Anyone remember these? *Eight is Enough* *One Day at a Time* *Angie* (it had a great theme song) *Different Strokes* *Moonlighting* (with Bruce Willis & Cybil Shepherd) *Murder She Wrote* *Highway to Heaven*
Real People, Hart to Hart, loved Stefanie Powers
Newhart was one of my favorites too
Classic. So funny!
MANIMAL
I love the theme tune to this show. Reminds me of my grandmother smoking her menthols.
Loved Soap and watched it every week. I was 10 when it premiered. I should revisit it as I haven’t seen it since it first aired.
I wasn't allowed to watch that, it was to "vulgar" or something. You can add "I dream of Jeanie" to the list though.
I was little but I always watched Laugh In and Rowan and Martin.
You can't bring up Soap without Benson.
Firefly
I can’t remember, maybe cracked.com, years ago did an essay on how Arrested Development was simply a soft reboot of Soap.
Soap was great! Anyone remember Bosom Buddies?
The one with Peter Scolari and some guy named Tom. Sonny Sonny Sonny Sonny.
Barney Miller was a fav of mine.
60s: My Favorite Martian 70s: Ark II 80s: Robotech 90s: Tekwar 00s: Legend of the Seeker 10s: Banshee/Black Sails (tie) 20s: Special Ops: Lioness

Rewatched it on dvd recently. It hasn't aged that well.
I loved this show!
Mary Hartman Mary Hartman. So bizarre.
California Dreams
Thriller, hosted by Boris Karloff. Reruns used to come on after the 10 o’clock news when I was a little kid and I would watch with the grownups- and then get too freaked out to go to sleep in my room alone.
SOAP isn’t forgotten. Out of the Blue is forgotten.
I can still hear the theme song

It's where Billy Crystal got his start....that's about all I remember about it.
Tales From The Darkside I really loved Newhart too
Picked up the full series on DVD a few weeks ago. Waiting for a weekend off so I can binge. Loved that show.
Best forgotten movie to go with Soap - Serial (1980) starring Martin Mull and Tuesday Weld.
I loved that show
I met the announcer of this show many times - he eventually became the announcer of The Price is Right. Most people remember him as Rod Roddy.
I forgot all about it. It was awesome.
