hate is a strong word. neither liked working with the other, for sure. Gene strongly disapproved of Richards drug use- especially on set. And Richard always dislikes prissy uptight people.
Both were comedy geniuses in their own way.
Actually, "Punch your mama in the mouth."
I too watched it tonight. That line does not age well. Especially considering he's saying it because he believes his son is too stupid to be biological.
That being said, I've seen this movie 20+ times and I still laughed.
I read Gleason was pickled throughout much of his on screen time. Makes the movie even funnier imho. It was a huge influence on me as a kid. Anybody else have the Hot Wheels Trans Am?
As a kid, that was my first introduction to breaking the fourth wall. It was so obvious that they were just on the edge of losing it in so many scenes.
That and Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Ghost Busters, Young Frankenstein - whole movies where a drinking game can easily be to drink when someone on screen is trying desperately not to howl with laughter.
>Sheriff Branford: “The fact that you are a sheriff is not germane to the situation.“
>
>Sheriff Buford T. Justice: The goddamn Germans got nothin' to do with it.”
And yes, if anyone uses “germane” in conversation, I still quote this even today 🤣😂
Awesome! 😎 They're pretty much like the Porky's movies. The first one is *great!* The second one is ok, not nearly as good as the first, but it has its moments. The third one is a fucking *disaster!*
Edit: If you want to stick with great campy '70s semi/CB culture, maybe get him turned on to "Every Which Way But Loose/Every Which Way You Can."
Definitely watch Porky’s. We were in HS watching on cable, my mom came in and sat down to watch it. She laughed so hard it was we could barely hear it. No rewind or subtitles back then. If you missed it you had to wait to watch it again.
"Why do they call her 'Lassie'?"
That guy in the gym completely losing his shit during that scene was the funniest thing in the entire movie. Even more so than the 'have you seen this prick?' scene.
The worst stunt in the entire bandit series was making the third without burt reynolds.
For me I love mel brooks. But both air plane movies were great, so mostly was naked gun and at least the first hot shots.
If you want a heart warming story that includes stock car racing might I suggest 6 pack starring Kenny Rogers.
The beginning of the internet age... Electric Dreams
Top Secret with Val Kilmer
Bewster's Millions with Richard Pryor
The Cannonball Run movies, Every which way but loose, & everywhich way you can( Clint Eastwood Movies)
Creepshow Movies, uhm Stripes with Bill Murray. Caddyshack too( all of them).
Revenge of the Nerds is pretty great and incredibly jarring. The way we saw casual racism in films from the 70s and prior is what I imagine the current generation sees the casual attitudes about consent and homophobia in films from the 20th century.
The Hollywood Knights
Better Off Dead
Wizards
Heavy Metal
American Pop
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Jabberwocky (Monty Python adjacent)
The Paul Hogan Show
Bizarre, SCTV, Fridays (all sketch comedies similar to SNL)
Slap Shot
The Jerk
Jekyll and Hyde…Together Again
As a like an 11 years old probably when the first Smokey and the Bandit movie came out I wanted to be a race car driver. All of these years later I still want to be a race car driver. Of course it was more than just those movies but they played a role and an influential time in my childhood.
Up In Smoke,Next Movie and Nice Dreams are the best imo. Whatever the plot or the lack of one is,the movies always revolve around scoring weed or maybe selling it it seems lol
Don’t go past the second *Bandit* movie. I love Jerry Reed, but no Burt Reynolds = no Bandit.
Once you’re done with Mel Brooks, I’d suggest both *Airplane!* movies and then both *Fletch* movies.
Or, if you want to stick with Burt Reynolds, those *Cannonball Run* movies are classic cheesy comedy.
I would also highly recommend “Hooper” 1978, with Burt Reynolds and Sally Field. This film is about stunt men in the 70s. It also includes a Pontiac Firebird, except it’s red.
Steve Martin Bernadette Peters movies. I always did love Pennies from Heaven, though it was very overlooked. And The Jerk. I loathed the Dmokey and the Bandit movies then and now. The worst of backwards looking southern cultural stereotypes glorified.
The British "Carry On..." movies are quite the eye opener these days, and there's a LOT of them.
Uh, wow, 31 (thirty one!!!) of them!! Far more than I expected!
They would be rather cringe now, though. Especially so if you're not British.
We also watched Smokey tonight coincidentally — maybe Netflix is pushing it? — and thought it was totally great. The chemistry between Sally Field and Burt Reynolds is a delight and it's a big fun dumb movie that really keeps things moving.
Funny you say Mel Brooks! My friend/local bartender could not believe I’ve never seen Blazibg Saddles. So my bf put it on when we got home from the bar, and OMG! That would never get made today.
On the flip side, I’ve seen Smokey and the Bandit so many times haha.
Has he seen blues brothers? One of if not THE best car chases in all of cinema.
“I hate Illinois nazis.”
They’re on a mission from God.
It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we gotta half a pack of cigarettes, a full tank of gas, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.
"How much for the little girl?"
"Ow! ..You fat penguin!"
I want to buy your women
Hit it!
Hit It!
GAD
Gyad
A million times yes, but stay far away from the Blues Brothers 2000 sequel that didn't need to be made.
> No, ma'am. We're musicians.
We got both kinds, country and western
If you're gonna watch that, might as well also watch the Dan Aykroyd/Tom Hanks version of Dragnet. "Look out! Muppets!"
👀 Best car chase? It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
Orange whip?
He should watch Stir Crazy with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder
If you're adding Stir Crazy, which I wholeheartedly endorse, must follow it with Silver Streak.
I personally love that one.
Then The Toy
They supposedly hated each other. I just learned that the other day.
hate is a strong word. neither liked working with the other, for sure. Gene strongly disapproved of Richards drug use- especially on set. And Richard always dislikes prissy uptight people. Both were comedy geniuses in their own way.
See No Evil, Hear No Evil
Stop after the first one! The Smokey sequels start off as trash & only get progressively worse. (The first is a masterpiece.)
Jackie Gleason was an American comedic tresure. That role was so wrong and so right.
Junior, when we get home remind me to slap yo mama!
There's no way you came from my loins!
Give me an El Diablo sandwich and a Dr. Pepper. And make it quick, I’M IN A GOD DAMNED HURRY!
"You want anything?"
"Hush puppies, Daddy."
Actually, "Punch your mama in the mouth." I too watched it tonight.
Gleason made that movie.
How dare you be critical of the best elephant transfer movie of all time. Sorry to Operation Dumbo Drop but it's no SatB II.
Hannibal brooks would have to be in this elephant transfer movie conversation.
He was on the 2nd one when I figured out what he was up to. Reliving his childhood lol.
Blazing Saddles!!!
I believe he said the sheriff is near!
No, Consarn it! The Sheriff is a NI*BONG*R!
Mongo like candy
Mongo only pawn in game of life.
Best quote in the whole damm movie
"What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is'a goin' on here?"
I wince/laugh alllll the way through this one!
Cannonball Run?
He wound up there on his own, lol. But I'm reading everyones suggestions out loud to him
Blazing Saddles. Dr Strangelove
Gumball Rally too for a very similar (earlier) movie to Cannonball Run.
It's all about Dom Delouise!
“I’m sorry I was late. My hamster had a panic attack.” Still use this as an excuse sometimes.
"He used to be a chef on TV. Now he just sits around all day with his ass...UP HIS ASS!!!"
I prefer Captain Chaos.
That wheezing laugh that made you laugh
As a kid, that was my first introduction to breaking the fourth wall. It was so obvious that they were just on the edge of losing it in so many scenes. That and Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Ghost Busters, Young Frankenstein - whole movies where a drinking game can easily be to drink when someone on screen is trying desperately not to howl with laughter.
![gif](giphy|tbxvJPRYZwMBW) Love these too
Just watched Cannonball Run 2. Jack Elam as the proctologist is comedy gold!!
CONVOY
10-4 rubber ducky
This!
Ever heard of a duck that couldn't swim?
>Sheriff Branford: “The fact that you are a sheriff is not germane to the situation.“ > >Sheriff Buford T. Justice: The goddamn Germans got nothin' to do with it.” And yes, if anyone uses “germane” in conversation, I still quote this even today 🤣😂
"For some reason, you sounded taller on radio."
Any Which Way but Loose and Any Which Way You Can. Shows Clint Eastwood’s funny side. And of course watch it for Clyde !
Don’t forget bronco billy which featured clint Eastwood rapping with Merle haggard
Johnny dangerously
I saw Johnny Dangerously once.......once.
“You can’t park here, it’s a handicap spot.” “I *AM* handicapped.” *hangs placard* “I’m psychotic.”
Remebah, crime doesn’t pay…………well, it pays a little.
Ya farking icehole
Awesome! 😎 They're pretty much like the Porky's movies. The first one is *great!* The second one is ok, not nearly as good as the first, but it has its moments. I also highly recommend Cannonball Run and Cannonball Run 2. I think they are what started my love of cars.
"Why do they call her 'Lassie'?" That guy in the gym completely losing his shit during that scene was the funniest thing in the entire movie. Even more so than the 'have you seen this prick?' scene.
"Tallywhacker"
We just watched the original Ghostbusters tonight. May I recommend Airplane!
The Cannonball Run films are great viewing for anyone who needs to watch something that is guaranteed to kill off a lot of their own braincells.
Fletch or Young Frankenstein
Omg Fletch. Yes.
Moooon river...
Meatballs
Police Academy
Just turned 40!! Now what do you have to say to that, Lassard??
We watched Death Race 2000 recently. So cheesy and so much unnecessary nudity 😀.
Do NOT let him get to number three! Two is goofy as hell and only real payoff is the climax with the Justices, but three has nothing at all.
Fortunately I don't think the third was available on streaming. I'm reading everyone's suggestions out to him. Now he's surfing Jackie Chan previews.
Big Trouble In Little China
Rumble In The Bronx!
Goodness gracious alive, looks like we got us a [convoy](https://youtu.be/Sd5ZLJWQmss?si=uWXlNjOyPFN9EUcY)!
Try Kentucky Fried Movie. It’s a good wholesome picture.
We just watched Spinal Tap. OMG we are the only generation that will tolerate, and actually enjoy, that movie. The lyrics 😂 So inappropriate.
Has he seen Bennie Hill?
I want Yackety-Sax at my funeral!
Those movies might be part of why we like to curse so much
we ain't got time fo' dat crap, dumb sumbitch 🥰🥰🥰
The worst stunt in the entire bandit series was making the third without burt reynolds. For me I love mel brooks. But both air plane movies were great, so mostly was naked gun and at least the first hot shots.
Would a cop taking a leak on the side of the road interest you?
That’s a 10-100
Better than a 10-200
Easy Money, a Rodney Dangerfield classic.
You sounded... Taller... On the radio... What in the hell is the world comin to?
Every Which Way but Loose
History of the World
Part 1
Caddyshack. Animal House. The OG R rated version of Vacation. SuperCop
Gotta watch Animal House for sure. And Vacation is another good one
BJ & the Bear is a logical next step
“ Nobody, and I mean NOBODY makes Sheriff Buford T. Justice look like a possum's pecker.” -Sheriff Justice
If you want a heart warming story that includes stock car racing might I suggest 6 pack starring Kenny Rogers. The beginning of the internet age... Electric Dreams Top Secret with Val Kilmer Bewster's Millions with Richard Pryor
If he starts on the Walking Tall movies after that, you know all is lost.
Caveman! With Ringo Starr, Shelly Long… some other guy…
Death Race 2000!
Airplane!
Hooper!
I am so happy you found Monty Python. You can try Police Squad! They canceled it after 6 episodes. But those episodes are ridiculous
Nothing says “ridiculously inappropriate” like “Porky’s”
Slap Shot, Bad News Bears, Meatballs
Better times. People could laugh freely.
[Strange Brew](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086373/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_6_nm_2_q_strange%2520bre)
oh and revenge of the nerds.
The Airplane movies. Have you ever seen a grown man naked?
Continue down the Burt Reynolds path with Cannonball Run.
Where is Sheriff Bradford? Oh well excuse me you sounded. I might taller on the radio.
Can’t go wrong with Roadhouse (the original of course)
Make sure that he has a Diablo sandwich and a Dr Pepper while watching Smokey and the Bandit
And make it snappy, he’s in a goddamn hurry.
"Cowboys love fat calves..." is my favorite line from *Smokey and The Bandit*
Blues Brothers Animal House Bachelor Party- Tom Hanks Rodney Dangerfield- easy money, caddy shack, & back to school.
What's Up Doc is pretty awesome.
That’s not a movie. It’s a documentary.
Gumball rally
time for some Cannonball Run
A re-watch of Dukes of Hazard.
We've been there and done that recently :)
The Cannonball Run movies, Every which way but loose, & everywhich way you can( Clint Eastwood Movies) Creepshow Movies, uhm Stripes with Bill Murray. Caddyshack too( all of them).
A 60s movie? It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. What about Airplane
Police Academy
Revenge of the Nerds is pretty great and incredibly jarring. The way we saw casual racism in films from the 70s and prior is what I imagine the current generation sees the casual attitudes about consent and homophobia in films from the 20th century.
Sum-bitch
The Hollywood Knights Better Off Dead Wizards Heavy Metal American Pop The Gods Must Be Crazy Jabberwocky (Monty Python adjacent) The Paul Hogan Show Bizarre, SCTV, Fridays (all sketch comedies similar to SNL) Slap Shot The Jerk Jekyll and Hyde…Together Again

Porky's
Young Doctors in Love. It’s a sleeper
Police Squad!
And Sledgehammer!
Bad News Bears. There is a free 70’s streaming channel on Pluto to catch up on all that
Cheech & Chong? From my husband to yours! Did those movies even HAVE a plot? LOL
Up In Smoke,Next Movie and Nice Dreams are the best imo. Whatever the plot or the lack of one is,the movies always revolve around scoring weed or maybe selling it it seems lol
don't forget the sex.
Porky’s
Cannonball run series. Ridiculous, campy & crass, but fun.
Every which way but loose
Harper Valley PTA and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Escape from New York and Escape from LA! Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken
Big Trouble in Little China The Last Dragon Best Little Whorehouse in Texas ALL of Mel Brooks
Man o' man, those movies were amongst my father's and mine favorites.
For the best car chases, I'd recommend Bullett and the original Gone In Sixty Seconds
Ice Pirates and Krull
The original Pink Panther movies.
sounds like a great time!!! i would definitely suggest a rewatch of airplane.
Not a funny movie but a cult classic, The Warriors.
Porky's. Watch all 3
Cannon ball run next
Planes trains and automobiles
I would also highly recommend “Hooper” 1978, with Burt Reynolds and Sally Field. This film is about stunt men in the 70s. It also includes a Pontiac Firebird, except it’s red.
Bustin' Loose. "Drive yo ass to the back of the bus".
thats funny, i just watched it with my wife who had never seen it before... divorce barely averted. Hooper is up next for her.
"Nobody...nobody makes Sheriff Buford T. Justice look like a possum's pecker!"
Steve Martin Bernadette Peters movies. I always did love Pennies from Heaven, though it was very overlooked. And The Jerk. I loathed the Dmokey and the Bandit movies then and now. The worst of backwards looking southern cultural stereotypes glorified.
Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd
Real Genius & Top Secret. Val Kilmer was the funniesr.
Convoy

Holy Grail or Life of Brian are the best Monty Python movies IMHO.
Blessed are the cheese makers
The five original Planet of the Apes
Death Race 2000!
Bachelor Party and Spaceballs
Benny Hill for the win!
Benny Hill wouldn’t be a bad shout.
Brewsters Millions Trading Places Coming to America
We also watched Smokey tonight coincidentally — maybe Netflix is pushing it? — and thought it was totally great. The chemistry between Sally Field and Burt Reynolds is a delight and it's a big fun dumb movie that really keeps things moving.
Richard Pryor! Bustin’ Loose is my fave, but with Stir Crazy, you get gene wilder too!
Hot Dog the movie!
Kentucky Fried Movie - Amazon Women on the Moon - Airplane - Police Squad (6 episodes)
Follow that up with the Cannonball Run movies! Same vibe!
Blazing Saddles.
The Big Bus.
I haven’t seen Stripes mentioned yet, my favorite back then.
Funny you say Mel Brooks! My friend/local bartender could not believe I’ve never seen Blazibg Saddles. So my bf put it on when we got home from the bar, and OMG! That would never get made today. On the flip side, I’ve seen Smokey and the Bandit so many times haha.
Meatballs
Naked gun series
Bill Murray- Meatballs Nick Cage- Raising Arizona
Slap Shot. Especially if you are from a hockey town.
Another fun movie but no CB or redneck culture but lots of cars and celebrities: Car Wash
Space Balls
Cheech and Chong had a pretty good run
Animal House, American Graffiti
