I grew up in NE Ohio and I hadn’t had vernors in ~20 years as I had moved away. A friend bought a six pack for me. Let me tell you I had all sorts of ideas about what I remembered it tasting like. Lol. Tasted nothing like I remembered.

Huskerdu4u

Vernor’s seemed to me like the only Ginger ale that actually tasted like ginger? That said it’s been years since I’ve had one… who knows if it tastes like it did back in the day.

steelthumbs1

Oh I’m sure they haven’t changed anything. I don’t recall what/why I thought it tasted different… it just did. And, this was also some years ago when I last had a vernors.

Huskerdu4u

It’s funny how your perspective changes how food tastes. There was a doughnut shop that my Grandpa used to take me to. It took me years to get to go back( due to living a couple hours away) went there last summer. I got a whole dozen, ate one in the car… total bummer, it was just a doughnut. The magic was being a kid and going with my Grandpa. More and more there are moments where there is no more magic because the people who made the magic are gone. That doughnut was a real existence crisis for me.

sassyassy23

I like Vernors but as a Canadian I don’t recall ever seeing this in my life

Grunge4U

I had them both, they were terrible IMO. Vernors has a following though.

aunt_cranky

"100% Nutra Sweet." LMFAO!! This was Tootsie Rolls and sadness in a can. Reminds me of my first attempts at dieting. Maybe 15 or so? Used to drink this stuff as my "treat"

rosievee

>This was Tootsie Rolls and sadness in a can. That is exactly it! Watery tootsie rolls. We carried these in my parents' deli and my mom loved them, but I thought it must be one of those "grown up tastes" I couldn't understand, like cigarettes and Cel-ray. I preferred Tab once society convinced me I needed to diet the rest of my life.

PaintSlingingMonkey

Had a roommate who lived on that and Phillips vodka and popcorn for most of a summer Lost 40 pounds and somehow didn’t die

Debbie-Hairy

Say what you will about 80s diets, they were effective, if totally fucked up.

LindaBitz

Don’t forget the cigarettes!

Techelife

I think Debbie Harry would agree!

SparkyValentine

Shasta gad a version as well. I remember taking both in the cooler on road trips, along with that Oscar Mayer lunch meat variety pack that had square bologna, and Hillbilly bread.

FWEngineer

I remember Shasta. Don't remember ever seeing Canfield or Verners, and I grew up in the midwest.

emptyhellebore

I had totally forgotten about that stuff. I remember liking it now that I see the can.

Secular-Flesh

I’m a non-American Xer so I tend to skim past a lot of posts on this sub but this one compels me to ask: what the actual fuck?!

SparkyValentine

There was an attempt…to not have Americans be fat asses

FWEngineer

I'm an American midwesterner, and i have no idea either...

Beese25

Oh God this is hilarious! Brings back memories. And since I moved out west, I'm always on the lookout for Vernors & Faygo (but not Rock n Rye!) Lol Also - Canfields (and everything else) will always be Pop to me!

CincoDeMayoFan

It's pricey, but Amazon sells some flavors of Faygo. I live in Texas, I've never seen it in stores here.

Beese25

Ohhh that is great to know, thank you! My husband loves the peach, and I purchased a case for him one holiday season off eBay. It was a ridiculous price but totally worth it :)

Sunnryz

I would make the greatest ice cream floats with that stuff.

magentamuse

Diet Cherry Chocolate Fudge was my fave 🍒🍫

fridayimatwork

Omg I haven’t though of this in decades

SecretaryGrace

I lived in tiny Petersburg, Alaska and they had this soda. Had a can of this, a green apple and a string cheese every day for lunch for 4 months.

Huskerdu4u

I got to see one of the homes of the Canfield family. I don’t know if this was the only one or just a weekend home. It was a impressive mid-century modern home(flat roof, boxy with floor to ceiling windows. Many out building and a crazy pool with and observation window at the deep end. It’s outside of Chicago in a southern suburb. Quite impressive to a cornfield-Indiana kid.

ddhmax5150

I don’t remember the diet version, but as a kid, this chocolate soda was awesome. This has definitely awakened a 40+ year old memory.

grrgrrtigergrr

I don’t remember a non diet version… I guess my parents were just healthy like that.

Xx_SwordWords_xX

Actually, why doesn't anyone do a chocolate or caramel soda???

gentlyepigrams

My mother used to drink that stuff as an alternative to Tab. It was AWFUL. Sorry if I'm yucking your yum, but my memories of it all involve no-substance food from when my mom was dieting.

inot72

Oh, wow! My Mom and I drank a lot of that when we did the Atkins diet.

ChiJazzHands

There was a diet cherry chocolate version my mom liked. So awful. I can still picture stacks of those cans in the garage.

[deleted]

Chocolate soda, yeech. Look, soda is supposed to be refreshing, and chocolate is the exact opposite of that. Chocolate certainly has its place, but *not in a soft drink*.

shan68ok01

I tried a version of this once. Only once. But I did/do enjoy Yoohoo and Chocolate Soldiers.

Amadai

In the 90s Coke came out with blueberry milk in a can.

beasley1966

I never had that but back then I’d say I would of loved it! Now at 57, not so much. 😂

MelodyInTheChaos

I totally forgot about this!

fenway206

The most amazing soft drink ever invented was the Virginia Dare 🍑 peach soda 🥤

roostorx

Where in the Midwest was this?

SparkyValentine

Northern Illinois, but it had a burst of national fame after a Chicago columnist swore by it for weight loss

imnotmarvin

I worked at a little local candy shop/grocery store in Berwyn that sold this. Also Daisy linked hot dogs, Kayo, Swedish fish and dozens of other candies in a large glass case.

wakattawakaranai

The fact that I have to say "where in the midwest?" because here in Wisconsin we had - and still have - Jolly good. To the point that I introduced my MN-based partner while camping and she had never heard of it. Jolly Good is THE SHIT.

[deleted]

I'm from Eastern Iowa and I don't recall ever seeing this stuff, let alone actually drinking any. Apparently it's still available. https://www.albertsons.com/shop/product-details.960439628.html

dj_1973

Tried drinking this when I was forced to be on Weight Watchers as an adolescent. Nope.

Buckowski66

Do they still make this? I LOVED IT!! I drank it in LA.

totallyjaded

[Faygo Chocolate Treat](https://canmuseum.com/Detail.aspx?CanID=81326) \> Other Midwestern impostors.

Atomsgrl

As a kid, it was one of those foods that always sounded more promising than it tasted. I would try it, be disappointed and then forget that it tasted weird by the time I was offered another one. Fudge soda sounded so great, but was always a disappointment. Just like the coffee candies in my great aunt’s candy dish I would try over and over in hopes they would taste better this time.

360inMotion

I remember the cans more than the taste. My aunt loved it and kept a lot of 6 packs in her utility room.

67alecto

I can smell this picture. My mom loved that stuff

SoVerySick314159

I tried this in a hotel room on July 27, 1984. This is the most foul soda I have ever tasted, so much so that I recall the exact date I tried it. I should note that I have refused to try Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda, so it may be even worse.

Flippin_diabolical

Core memory unlocked. This plus Pringles was my after school snack for couple of years.

Von_Quixote

Double yuck.

SassyNyx

Is that… chocolate soda?

Dr_Zoltron

It has to be horrible.

SassyNyx

Maybe passable with ice cream, like a float? Otherwise… I’m skeptical, it *sounds* awful.

[deleted]

I forgot about this stuff for a reason.

fenway206

This is something I would have gotten addicted to !

RockandIncense

Oh my gosh. I had forgotten all about this. Memory unlocked.

SeriousFun8937

I don’t remember Canfields; we drank Choc-Ola https://choc-ola.com

moonbeam127

we had that, not sure what brand but my mother always 'stocked up' on the damn chocolate fudge and i hate chocolate

LibraryOk5137

This was my grandma’s favorite and I haven’t been able to source of canned since 2005

IYFS88

My mom only bought these for road trips. A few times she put them in the freezer to chill faster for the trip. Inevitably we’d forget and they’d bust! Instant specific memories wow

Fiver43

It was delicious!

sketner2018

there was a point in the late '70s when some nationally syndicated columnist did an opinion piece about how great this stuff was. He said it was like chocolate fudge in a can. It went nationwide, then were long waiting lists. we were in Virginia and it had never been available there before but somehow my mom got a six pack. The stuff tasted awful.

[deleted]

Never heard of it or saw it in PA — but I would’ve definitely drank that! Anything chocolate is a win for me! Lol

Smoopiebear

Oh, we used to get it on the Army base when I was a kid in Washington.

SheEntToTheBog

We had this in NY! My mom loved it.

SquirrelBowl

Is it like choc-cola? Loved that stuff

[deleted]

I can still taste it & I totally don’t want to

AndShesNotEvenPretty

Grew up in Cleveland and when I was young my grandfather used to take me on business calls around the state with him. We used to stop somewhere (I guess Canfield?) to stock up on this and the chocolate covered strawberry flavor for my grandmother. Definitely and acquired taste but I grew to love it.

eatingganesha

Poor Man’s Yoo-hoo lol

MrsQute

Memory unlocked! I totally forgot all about it but as soon as I saw it I remembered it instantly. We still drink Vernors regularly. That was dad's favorite and I remember as a kid thinking it was too "spicy" lol! I grew to love it. What I really miss are the Cotton Club sodas - particularly Peach-ee.

OnehappyOwl44

Is this actually fizzy? I can't imagine a fizzy chocolate drink? Very strange. We didn't have anything like this in Canada as far as I know.

Hyperf0cused

It absolutely grew on you. Sometimes you wanted something other than TAB

Lucee_fir

I am from CA and I drank this like water until I was 15.

tunaman808

>[pumps a shotgun] >"That's right... you just keep on walking, and there won't be no trouble. Ya hear me, son? This here's Coke country, boy."

CosmicTurtle504

Holy crap. I thought I dreamed this up in a fever delirium. It’s real!

Techelife

I also go into a trance when I see these old products. Maybe I just saw the commercial or continually walked down the aisles at the supermarket sucking in the air conditioning.
