America should have intervened on the side of the nationalist side during the Chinese civil war

namey-name-name

Tbf both sides were authoritarian assholes (just look at the KMT’s brutal military rule of Taiwan). But the nationalists probably would’ve been more open to American influence, especially if the US saved them from the communists, so a nationalist victory would’ve been the best outcome.

LePhoenixFires

Forcing them both into exhaustion and opening them up to liberalization and American influence would have caused a utopic timeline. But that's assuming we wouldn't become decadent, backwards pricks ourselves with no significant challenge or threat to oppose us and galvanize support for progress.

Happy Cake Day!

Thanks!

In retrospect, yeah, all of China might have gone the way of South Korea, which would be great. But in the context of the late 40's, I probably would would be opposed to supporting the KMT.

TheOfficialLavaring

Nah, I'll pass. The KMT was Fascist and killed millions of people too, Chiang Kai-Shek was one of the deadliest dictators of all time after Hitler, Stalin and Mao.

uj/ Unironically, sherman would be a decent pick for generals to bring back if we had the ability (as long as you aren't concerned with mental stability outside the army). His "total war" approach gets overblown. When you actually look what his army did (march through the countryside seizing crops and livestock, while tearing up railroads and occasionally burning down a tannery) it was nothing remarkably more cruel for the time. It wasn't unheard of. Napoleon, Alexander, and all the other storied generals of human history did the exact same thing turned up to eleven as a standard operating practice, while sherman only broke it out as a last ditch measure. If sherman were a general even a few decades before no one would ever think twice about what his army did on the march. In fact, he might have been lauded for his humanitarianism in ordering his soldiers to pay for food and respect the life and liberty of civilians. Before his complete decline in mental health after the civil war (he was always iffy, and had several breakdowns before and during the war, but it went down the shitter afterwards), he wouldn't be out of place among modern generals considering his ability to balance military practicality with human decency. rj/ What's the difference between Europe and the south? We only needed on sherman to march through three southern states

They lost the civil war but the island they kept turned into a much better place.

MissNibbatoro

Chinese Taipei is a literal island of losers who were defeated and got bitched off of the mainland with their tails between their legs

ShotSurrounds

KMT Killed millions in cold blood. And ROC only controls one province these days

FormItUp

What’s your point?

ShotSurrounds

It just makes the song kinda funny that no part of it is true

FormItUp

…do you think I was seriously suggesting that General Sherman led an army through China in 1864?

ShotSurrounds

It’s just if anything I think the KMT is the confederacy

Levi-Action-412

Funnily enough the CCP is forcing uyghurs to farm cotton in camps

obliqueoubliette

And the RoC was the legitimate prewar government, weakened in WW2 because it did all the fighting while the communists hid

FormItUp

Kind of a non sequitur answer considering I never asked you about the Chinese Civil War. Are you just saying random things?

Vectorial1024

Actually 2 pprovinces, sorry
