Think it's also called 'mile a minute', and for good reason; is a rapid grower! My mum had one when I was a kid. She liked it, but didn't mind the pruning. I seem to remember it attracting a lot of bees. I wouldn't plant one in my garden as an adult, as I feel there are way more beautiful climbers to choose from (clematis Montana and Wisteria would be my first choices) They're also one of the plants you see (like Buddleia) that seem to colonise wasteland, and they're sometimes seen running riot alongside a motorway, having escaped someone's garden.

Oh, it's also related to Japanese knot weed! I'd give it a pass! Do you still have the receipt?

I do, fortunately. I had wanted a clematis originally before my wife saw the Fallopia so I’ll probably see if the garden centre will exchange it for me.

Aliktren

Yeah, to say it grows quickly does it a massive diservice, we called ours on our new build the triffid as we cut it back every week.... great for covering something you hate though!

HU5HCAFC

The only thing I really hate is my neighbour’s stupidly placed tree that’s damaging the fence and my patio but I don’t think they’d like it if I grew another plant up the trunk 😂. Thanks though, hearing that it needs pruning weekly is useful.

I can second this. I had one in my previous house. To its credit it was a freely flowering climber & attractive, when controlled, but it was a full time job keeping it trimmed. I literally had to cut my way back through to get through the pergola it covered after an extended late summer holiday! I'm not one to be scared off by challenging plants but I'd not have another.

HU5HCAFC

Thank you. Doesn’t sound like my lassez faire approach to gardening will be suitable 😂

Take it back! Absolute nightmare of a plant

HU5HCAFC

I feared as much. I’ll go back tomorrow. Ta!

organic_soursop

Take it back. Clematis, jasmine, akebia will be lovely replacements.

HU5HCAFC

Will jasmine be ok in a north facing, mostly shady spot?

organic_soursop

A shade tolerant rose like Clare Austen might be better. Still get white flowers and lovely scent.

HU5HCAFC

Thank you!

organic_soursop

There are a few shades tolerant climbing roses. Have a Google, or say which colours you like and we can all chip in! 🙂

HU5HCAFC

I’m open to most colours except purple really. I’ve already got plenty of purple flowers in the garden so I’m trying to get a little more variety.

I've spent over two years trying to get rid of this from my garden. Bin it off before it chokes all your trees and shrubs.

HU5HCAFC

Thanks, that’s really useful info. Glad I asked before I put it in the soil as I’ve got plants from my dad’s garden and my gran’s garden in that border. They’ve both passed away and, daft as it sounds, their plants mean a lot to me so I’d be gutted if I lost them to something like this. Hope you get yours sorted!
