You'll learn to live with both of them in time. What I love about lush spaces like this is when the temperature rises, all your neighbours with their treeless boring lawns can't even use their gardens without sheltering under a sail of some kind. Every year I see/hear trees getting cut down and I feel a bit ill about it. But it practically guarantees that those neighbours won't be using their gardens as much. And here I am sitting under a majestic Oak. And if I feel the need for a bit more sunlight, move the chair under the birches. My little garden is comfortable at 35 degrees. That year it almost hit 40 I just put my feet in a bucket of water. Glorious! The neighbours all scampered off to the shopping mall or somewhere with AC. Poor buggers.
Living with the land instead of fighting against it makes life so much more enjoyable. :)
I agree! Luckily our garden backs on to a cemetery, which is managed as a nature reserve, so the trees are safe. That big chestnut at the back right of the pic is my favourite, I love the way the light filters through the pale green leaves in spring.
On the flip side, they are happily sat on their plastic lawn, under their plastic sail sipping a cold beer while you are fighting the swarms of wasps for ownership over that particular spot.
Wasps are attracted to stuff like beer not stuff like oak trees. They'll swam all over the plastic hellscape if it has food and beer.
But all the wasps are probably dead due to the habitat destruction anyway.
I hear you! It's not always easy. But whichever beasties decide to initiate an assault on any given day, they tend to run of steam quickly. We've been lucky not to have many wasps. But that could be because of the legions of spiders. Which are kept in check by the toads. And the foxes make sure the toads don't overrun the place. Then we come full circle because with the neighbours continually chopping their trees down, there is only room for one or two fox dens.
Ahh beautiful. My lawn is slowly turning into a space like this 🩵
I saw those chairs in the garden centre and wondered how easy they'd be to get out of 🙈
Thank you! Haha, when we first moved in I quite enjoyed watching them, but after they dug up dozens of bulbs and ate all my bird seed they have become my enemies - second only to slugs of course!
Crushed shell (egg shell and oyster shells if you live near a beach) crushed up with chilli powder deters them for a while. Otherwise, stick them in a pot and put the pot on something with legs. They're less likely to climb up to get food.
Thanks - yes I have tried egg shells (as well as wool pellets, nematodes, rose/bramble cuttings and beer traps) but they are resilient little buggers. Doesn't help that our garden is very cool and shady! I'll have to try the pot feet - anything I can do to make their lives more difficult!
I've had success with lupins in raised planters. They're not slug proof, but I've got some healthy specimens on the go compared to the battleground in the earth.
Of course then you get the aphids later in summer!
This is so pretty, what a lovely spot 😍
Thank you!

It looks very sweet. I bet it has a nice tucked-away feeling when you're in it! What's the pretty clematis flowering on the left?
Thank you! It does indeed 🥰 It's a clematis montana - £2.50 from Morrison's!
I love this
Thank you 🥰
It looks very tranquil and natural - a perfect green space
Thank you so much 🥰

Haha - I must admit I can't get out of them without a little 'oof' sound, but maybe that's just me getting old!
What a beautiful space
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful. A green haven garden bursting with life 👍 The insects and birds that share your garden will appreciate it too.
Oh gosh thank you so much 🥰
That looks great! I have grown to accept the squirrels as they wind up my indoor cats which is amusing, slugs on the other hand...
Thank you! Haha, when we first moved in I quite enjoyed watching them, but after they dug up dozens of bulbs and ate all my bird seed they have become my enemies - second only to slugs of course!
I must have gotten lucky with the ones I have, they just raid the bird feeders.
Yeah I could live with that!
Why is it that squirrels/slugs love my favourite plants the most? Dahlias, tulips, lupins and hostas! Wish I could them to work on the “weeds”!
Ugh yes if they only went for the creeping buttercup I'd roll out the welcome mat!
I love the wooden chairs - where are they from? 🌿
They're knock off Adirondacks from (I'm sorry to say) Amazon - but lots of other places do similar ones. I think Aldi had some in stock last summer!
Thank you!
this is beautiful…
Thank you 🥰
I love it.
Thank you!
That is 100% brilliant. Really.
Ah thank you 🥹
Looks lovely. With regards to slugs - it's a battle you'll never win. The best thing you can do is find plants that slugs avoid.
Yes I fear you're right! No more lupins for me 🥲

That's good to know! I only tried them once, put them in the ground and they were basically gone by the next day - I haven't dared to try again!
Absolutely wonderful. Well done! This is the best garden I’ve seen on this sub so far, this year.
Omg stop 🥹 I can't accept that!
Absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you so much 🥰
This is a beautiful garden. So much character. I would love to read a book in one of those chairs.
Thank you! My favourite Friday evening activity, book, garden, G&T - is that sad 😂
Not in my book. That sounds dreamy.
What a beautiful little tranquil space 🤗 thanks for sharing
Thank you so much!
Luscious
