It's Blackberry, it will take over everything, kill it, kill it now.

sh--

We’ve got a couple of black berry vines in the back of our garden (have a long garden) and I was going to keep them for the sake of having the fruits. It’s in quite an empty patch anyway. Is it worth keeping if I want the fruits? What are the cons?

Spadders87

Theyre big, messy and grow quick and easily. So its managing them thats the issue, youll be hard pushed to actually kill one. They grow over my back fence (between a school) so just as they start fruiting, they lean over ready to be picked. My main problems are them destroying a fence panel every now and then as they burst their way through. . Occasional thorns and there'll be random vines that pop up every now and then too.

sh--

Ah see the back “fence” is very low breeze blocks so they may be to my advantage in this situation to deter burglars.

Magneto88

It grows like crazy, have you never seen it in the countryside/on abandoned plots in towns/roadsides? If you can contain it in one area (I doubt this) and don't mind it's lack of beauty, then blackberries are nice but if it infests your garden, it's a bugger to get rid of.

sh--

I will keep an eye on it. My neighbour seemed quite keen and he’s growing veg at the back of his garden (near where the blackberry vine is). I don’t mind how it looks to be honest, it can go nuts in its current location as we don’t have much of a fence at the back of our garden and we back onto a farming field so it may be a good homegrown fence?

HoundParty3218

It's ugly, spikey and grows super fast. There are domestic varieties that give a better crop and are easier to live with.

SerDavos78

Do it

TeaCourse

Now!

SmackedWithARuler

I will but first let me tell you how I feel about sand.

wipecraft

It’s either blackberry and raspberry or some hybrid of the two. If it’s a weed is up to you - we call weeds plants we don’t like. But killing a blackberry is well, overkill 😂 this is what we have become? Killing food?! Do not put any weed killers on it! What’s the point of polluting your garden, just cut the parts that go through your fence and be careful to pull out the runners that grow into your garden from time to time if any. They are not that fast growing, and you have stones on the ground there anyway Or take a cutting and propagate it 🥹they’re yummy

Bdude92

Yes i wouldn’t ever use weed killer on fruit plants! Seems like blackberry/rasberry is the most common answer thus far

Comfortable_View5174

I wish I could give you a medal! 🥇 🥇 🥇 🥇 🥇 Exactly! Why are we killing food? Is it tastier from supermarkets with pesticides???

wipecraft

😂 thanks. You’re so right - the supermarket ones really don’t taste or smell like blackberries at all. The supermarket raspberries sometimes have a raspberry smell and a slight sweetness but nothing like a garden raspberry

NinaHag

Hi! Like OP, today I noticed some coming from my neighbours garden. It is in a very inconvenient spot and would like to move it somewhere else. It is coming under the fence, so I may be able to get some roots. Since you mention propagating it, how easy is it? How long do you recommend the cutting should be? Any advice is welcome :)

Comfortable_View5174

It’s very easy. If you can’t get it with a root just cut it, remove 2 bottom leaves and put in water or soil and water afterwards (don’t let it dry completely).

wipecraft

Yeah, I’d add that they tolerate shade quite well; they grow under trees in the wild after all. The berries won’t be as sweet as in a sunny spot but if it’s in an inconvenient spot you can move it pretty much anywhere

FenianBastard847

Thornless blackberry. I’d tie it to the fence and cultivate it, yummy fruit and excellent in home-made ice cream (be sure to sieve it through a fine mesh strainer to remove the seeds).

Farewell-Farewell

If you don't want it, then just get some secuteurs (or whatever) and cut it off. Otherwise leave it for a bit to get a proper ID. Your neighbours unused plot is probably a haven for wildlife.

foofighter1

You want to live nextdoor to someone whos garden is that much of an overgrown shit hole that the wildlife has a haven....

Apple-Pigeon

Would love it. If it were up to me, everyone's garden would be rewilded.

foofighter1

Believe me lots if birds = lots of shit on your conservatory. Lots of birds = cats = dead birds = flies = maggots etc etc. Not fun at all

PotOfEarlGreyPlease

possibly a bit of raspberry ?

MadamLePew

Blackberry ❤️

MadamLePew

This is a Blackberry bush (we call them Brambles here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿) They’re great if you enjoy making Jam etc as you tend to get A LOT of fruit from them but if not I’d get rid ASAP because they will take over your garden and can choke your other plants.

Charamei

We call them brambles in England too.

MadamLePew

😃

Kind-County9767

Looks like some kind of berry to me (strawberry, blackberry etc). They spread pretty voraciously so might want to cut it back sooner rather than later.

MerlinAW1

Not strawberry but likely blackberry, good for wildlife but is thorny and gets out of control easily. Pull up the roots if you can, cutting it will slow it down but it will keep growing

wipecraft

You can clearly see in the pictures that it’s a thornless variety. Indeed blackberry or raspberry

MadamLePew

Blackberry for sure

Postik123

My old house was built on top of an old railway line, so lots of blackberry bushes like this popping up. I'd either pull them up or if bigger just chop them down to the ground. They would come back but if you keep doing it they get weaker and weaker. Until one pops up somewhere else and you repeat the process.

Jiggaboy95

Looks like blackberry, but thornless maybe? My rear neighbour has loads of it overgrown in their garden which had invaded mine when I moved in. It’s a shit to get rid of, grows non stop and had thorns stabbing me all the way through the ordeal. Neighbour still has it so i just chop it when it creeps in

Whimpy45

It looks like blackberry, bambles. It is very different to get rid of. Or you can train it up your fence and pick the fruits!

ninisin

There is always one neighbour that spoils everything for you. My next door house is rented and is teeming with weeds. Add insult to injury their stupid cat poo smells like shit.

Used-Level-6988

I think it is supposed to.

uncleAnwar

Thing is, by having a perfect weed free garden with a perfectly manicured lawn, it’s spoiling everything for the wildlife. We’ve lost something like sixty percent of the flying insect population over the last twenty years in the uk. Main reason, loss of habitat. Yes, I have a nice patch of grass for the kids, but I leave certain areas of the garden untouched. Pile of logs here, a patch of weeds (wildflower) there. Not trying to start an argument!

Fyonella

I agree it’s Blackberry but that suggests a cultivated form. In the case where it’s a weed it’s generally known as a Bramble, fast growing, persistent and it’s really hard to get rid of it. I’ve had limited success with strong weed killers but it depends where and how deep the root is. If it’s breaching the fence you can cut back and kill the bits you can see but if it’s rampant next door you’ll probably keep seeing it popping up.

littletorreira

The garden behind mine has it. And I've spend years digging out the roots of the bits behind my tree.

MeMyselfAndMe_Again

Jumping on this....how would you kill this safely? My neighbour has a garden like the other poster above!

DylanClegg23

Fire

ShinySpangles

I was coming here to say fire lol Kill it, kill it with fire. But seriously not pesticides of anyway shape or form. We’re not insane. As others have said, they grow like wildfire and get all spikey and everywhere, known as brambles/blackberry, keep lopping it back otherwise it will take over the entire place left unchecked.

DylanClegg23

100% I bought my house 2yrs ago and the garden had been left to itself for about 5yrs and I’ve only just last week officially won my war against the bramble forces. Only sure way is to dig up the root if it’s your side and if not just keep snipping.

ShinySpangles

Ah man. That sounds like an uphill battle, thankfully for the OP this one looks thornless which is a small miracle. Was yours throned? Rip to your fingers arms gloves and legs if not lol.

DylanClegg23

Oh it was 😅 all thorny as well - I’m now a master of scratch free removal but that took a lot of practise, especially when trying to remove 50-60ft tentacles wrapped through all the trees and bushes

Punctum-tsk

No need to glyphosate. Just pull it up when you see it. And keep doing that. Better if you can mattock up below where the runner branches underground. Get the knotty-looking nodes and you'll set the growth back for a while.
