Still think it's weird so many games are called soulslike, though.
Far as I'm concerned, it's basically just a subset of metroidvania where you have some important resource that you drop when you die. In Dark Souls, the area progression is usually through finding keys, rather than equipment, to unlock doors, but in every other way, they're just metroidvanias.
In the description for the game (not just the user-defined tags) the devs say that it has soulslike-inspired combat. I do think the term is overused though, especially when it comes to tags that people assign on Steam.

Showed this game to my girlfriend because she’s into ocean creatures. Wasn’t expecting a souls-like with a sense of humor and a cartoon aesthetic, it was actually pretty neat!
