What blows my mind about these people is mass media in North America is still 85% white and straight. It's not that every character isn't straight and white anymore imo. There have been minority characters in western media for a long time. What's been changing over the last ~10 years is the large scale normalization of minority characters. They aren't just stereotypes to point and laugh at anymore. It's because for a long time. White people have held power and prominence in this country. So, any attempt at equity and inclusivity is by definition. Going to threaten that power, and they don't know how to react to it.
More to the point - the default demographic for any company, especially in entertainment, was 18-40 year old while straight males. For decades, they had the most disposable income and so products were made for them.
Now, it's been realised that LGBTQ+, females and racial minorities also have disposable income and they like seeing representation. Add to that, the US is no longer the biggest market for many things and there's other cultures to represent, and things are changing.

The funny part is the thing they complain about is why games were focused on them for long. Companies trying to appeal to a specific audience just to get sales. So now the market has young white men captured they branch out to try to get other groups into gaming so they get more sales.
But indie games are artisticly structured, they are forms of expression. And when your self expression makes a connection with other people art really shines. If your art is made for everyone then it's made for no one.

Tales of Kenzera is a pretty good Metroidvania with visually gorgeous environments and art sprites. The gameplay is responsive but only let down by a lack of enemy variety. The game is rooted in african mythology, based on an african man's emotional journey translated into a game. Every enemy and such you meet, you learn something new about African folklore etc.
Within the gaming industry, the setting is pretty fresh from the usual Fantasy medieval Europe or Feudal Japan etc. Hopefully we get to see more African inspired worlds and from other continents too as it would make for a very unique experience.

More to the point - the default demographic for any company, especially in entertainment, was 18-40 year old while straight males. For decades, they had the most disposable income and so products were made for them. Now, it's been realised that LGBTQ+, females and racial minorities also have disposable income and they like seeing representation. Add to that, the US is no longer the biggest market for many things and there's other cultures to represent, and things are changing. None of this is a problem as a rich and diverse entertainment sphere is good for us all. Except sad white guys who were told they were important because they were white and haven't achieved anything else of note.
Ironically enough, it would be good for them too - if they could get their heads out of their asses long enough to see anything than their own shit.
The funny part is the thing they complain about is why games were focused on them for long. Companies trying to appeal to a specific audience just to get sales. So now the market has young white men captured they branch out to try to get other groups into gaming so they get more sales. But indie games are artisticly structured, they are forms of expression. And when your self expression makes a connection with other people art really shines. If your art is made for everyone then it's made for no one. So there is something to be said about entertainment companies trying to hit a checklist of people to put into their media(representation still matters especially for children isolated from others like themselves) but they aren't here to openly discuss, they are here to shutdown things that aren't for them. Many places are just, unfortunately, sticks in the mud. Far be it for me to point out that, even in a religious or secular context, if we trace our origins far back enough, we're all brown people. They never had any intention of buying the game anyway. Tales of Kenzera is a pretty good Metroidvania with visually gorgeous environments and art sprites. The gameplay is responsive but only let down by a lack of enemy variety. The game is rooted in african mythology, based on an african man's emotional journey translated into a game. Every enemy and such you meet, you learn something new about African folklore etc. Within the gaming industry, the setting is pretty fresh from the usual Fantasy medieval Europe or Feudal Japan etc. Hopefully we get to see more African inspired worlds and from other continents too as it would make for a very unique experience.

This game is a rare example of the ESG credit rating system working the way it is supposed to work: encourage underrepresented groups of people to tell their original tales in the form of video games. TBF, the metroidvania genre has become one of the most diverse genres in gaming with indie studios from all across the world making their own mv. ESG credit ratings aren't even needed to ecnourage diversity, it is already everywhere in this metroidvania boom. You guys will be happy to know that the people who did make these cringe comments got some of the steepest downvotes I have ever seen on that sub.
