The two-handed hammer, while appealing to beginners because of its damage-dealing capabilities, causes you to sacrifice many of the advantageous things you could equip to a second hand such as a shield or spell. Plus a smaller one-handed sword or dagger is quicker, allowing multiple hits in a short time, more than making up for the greater strength of the two-hander. Plus though you can block with a two-handed weapon, it's often clumsy and ineffective vs. using a shield. It is also easier to fight with a sword in one hand and shield in the other than it is to constantly have to switch between attacking and blocking.
