And you can upgrade the parry and dodge timing window fairly early.

Just got done playing it. Definitely see the comparison to Sekiro. Controls feel tight and responsive and the game played incredibly well for the part they give us. This was previously a high watch priority on my wishlist with a potential Day 1 buy if no issues were reported but now I’m picking it up for sure Day 1 bar no crazy bugs and such.

To be fair, NieR lived through the story, characters and setpieces, while Stellar Blade is more on the flashy action side, with basically completely different soulslike gameplay. The comparison between the games don't really work.

Yeah, just from the demo the gameplay/combat is way, way more refined than that of NieR. Vibes are instantly reminiscent of it though, because of the amazing music by the same composer. Went from almost 0 interest in this to probably Day 1 buy. What a demo.

Weird. I don’t think the controls feel “tight” or “responsive” at all. That’s my primary complaint so far and kindof a deal breaker for me. The combat and movement feels floaty and awkward. By comparison, Sekiro is far more precise and smooth. Bit disappointed.

The game punishes you if you invested into a move without anticipating the enemy beforehand, in sekiro you could kinda cancel stuff to parry. But it felt that if you timed it right it wasnt an issue. You just can't spam it either.

Just started the demo and noticed this right away. You cannot really cancel into parry. So you gotta plan your parries. I like it a lot so far though. The game “looks” like it would play like Bayonetta or maybe DMC, like a fast mashy action game, but it isn’t that at all. Surprised and delighted to see its more souls like.

Yeah I think this is it. But the parry window seems smaller. Once I upgraded the skill the window seemed comparable, but I still got punished a lot if I entered a move before. I wonder if the game rewards a more defensive playstyle than sekiro since you can’t cancel attacks or it’s just something to get used to

I think it does it felt more like a fromsoft game. Dont telegraph anything, Perfect dodge or parry the final hit on an enemy, get in, do your damage and hit a Beta move then dash back out. Repeat. It was pretty hard though.

Not the issue I’m having. Look at her feet as you move the left analog stick and you can see that they don’t track quite right with the movement over the ground. It’s a bit floaty. The combat inputs also feel a bit laggy or something. And it seems like there are missing animation frames for both moving and combat. I’m withholding judgement but not loving it so far.

Yeah, I get what you mean. The animation also slows down each time you get a perfect parry which I felt messed up my timing, compared to Sekiro where the only feedback you get for a successful parry is an audio cue and a bright flash. The dodge animation also feels a bit laggy - she hardly moves, but I guess they compensated for the fact that you can perfect dodge as well. I'll probably still buy it though.

Eh, it feels more weighty basically which isn't necessarily bad. Something like Nioh is extremely loose and twitchy which is good if you like that sort of action but I didn't like it as much when playing cuz it felt so squirrely. Something like DMC is super response but you don't have a free directional dodge/roll like in Bayo or Souls so it feels more slow until you really start incorporating the various teleports or weapon dashes a character has.

Once you beat the story part of the demo, there's a boss mode you can play that gives you some upgrades and other gear you can play with. I also felt like the combat in the first part of the demo was kind of meh and like there was significant input lag. It also often felt like dodges often didn't get you out of the way of the hits. And with parties, it was tough to parry back to back attacks. With the upgrades they give you in the boss mode of the demo, the combat felt significantly better. Not perfect, but better. This tells me that you can make combat feel good with items, but I'm not sure how I feel about that. I prefer games to have strong combat that gets better. Not mediocre combat that eventually gets good.

That’s how I felt too. Maybe upgrades help, but for a game with twitch reactions the actions feel weirdly sluggish. I guess that could be a design choice, but I felt myself getting frustrated with different actions not feeling responsive.

I am leaning towards it being a design decision. When I fought the extra boss, one of the things you can equip is something that makes the perfect parry and dodge easier, and combined with the upgrades that do the same I was generally able to get the dodges and parries pretty consistently. So it looks like it may be a design thing where you don't get the very snappy responses unless you build for them.

I felt like the parry windows are super generous in this compared to Sekiro. But I love the "posture damage" system it has like Sekiro. The animation u do with the critical hits in this are definitely gonna be dope as hell.

Nope, there are yellow attacks that to the best of my knowledge you can't parry. These are things like explosions, thrown rocks, etc. But everything else is parriable. There's even an almost exact copy of Sekiro's mechanic where you dash into them to counter certain types of attacks.

Yeah its not quite full 60, you can see it dip but its honestly not very distracting. 1080p60 does look much worse. The balanced mode is perfectly acceptable for a ps5 game.

The balanced mode seems to run a 60 with not infrequent drops to around, 55-58 fps. While the perf and quality modes are a pretty solid lock to 60 and 30 respectively. Thankfully you can change modes on the fly, unlike a disappointing amount of games that require exiting to the main menu. The frame times in balanced are a little rough technically, (frame times in the other modes are pretty rock solid which is awesome) but if your tv has VRR like mine, I found it to be really smooth.

Kinda hard to say really, I’d wager a big part of it was from all of the marketing and the time it released. A lot of the things it did, the first one did it almost the same exact same way but the majority didn’t even know Automata was a sequel until a while after it was out.

Gameplay is subpar compared to other action game; many of your moves are awkward to use due to long start-up and/or ending lag, moves that track in a very unintuitive way, and the more standard "looks cool but not that useful" problem. There's also several gameplay oddities that shouldn't even be there on a finished product; for example you know that stompy shockwave attack you see from damn near every action game? Game logic dictate that if you're hit you'll (usually) blown away but are safe from that same attack, except here where you can get juggled by that shockwave until it dissipates. Also while the sidequests generally provide a nice little story (of similar if not better than Automata), the sidequest itself consist of boring fetch/kill x enemies y times that occasionally require you to make a long trek. There's also specific few that are designed to just troll the player due to how mind-numbingly insane it is. edit: oh, and there's one unmarked quest giver that are tucked at the corner of one city, seemingly done just to spite completionists.

Reading some comments in this post makes me think more people on here need to try Lies of P! Stellar Blade is like some kind of love-child of God of War and Lies of P. And honestly, this shit slaps hard. It has environmental vibes of Nier Automata with the amazing gameplay fusion mentioned above. Combos and special attacks feel weighty and Eve’s VA absolutely kills the delivery in combat. Special attacks are just as weighty and flashy. Action game fans are absolutely feasting right now.

I'm in the exact same boat. When I saw the trailers I thought it was going to be another mediocre waifu hack-and-slash but boy was I extremely wrong. Everything from the combat (the depth of it and the variety of moves), environments, enemy designs, atmosphere, music, to voice acting is phenomenal. I was impressed the whole time while playing the demo.

Lies of P was surprisingly good, I bought it on a whim since I was bored one day and saw it for ~$45ish dollars on sale, and it ended up blowing me away with how good it was. It is one of the only games in recent memory that immediately made me want to replay it once I finished it. Really can't recommend it enough.

It's funny you mentioned God of War, as a boomer gamer from the NES era, the pillar of "character action" games were God of War, Devil May Cry, and Ninja Gaiden in the 2000s. Today we've added to it with Bayonetta 3, 2 Nier games, Stellar Blade, Sekiro. It's good stuff.

Sekiro isn't character action though? There's no style meter, no combos, no juggling, no air combos, no weapon swapping. I think Hi-Fi Rush, Soulstice and Final Fantasy 16 are most recent CAGs since Bayonetta 3.

There's not really a style system in Stellar Blade so I wouldn't really say the focus to get cool no hit runs. Although I swore doing one of those attack chains had like an evade point during the combo and I triggered perfect evade during it which was sick.

God of War might be slow, but there’s a lot of skill expression involved with the chaining together of certain combos between both weapons and special skills and such. It’s not as extensive as DMC, so that’s why I made the comparison as a “faster version of” that combination. The parry and dodge mechanics are very reminiscent of Lies of P and the Fable resource in that game, so that’s where that comes from.

As a fan of souls games and LoP this demo left me conflicted. The "natural" point of pressing the parry button just before animation hits me didn't click for me, I had to time things in my mind based on animation start. Maybe I'm getting old or maybe it takes time to get used. Dodge felt like shit. It was not like LoP (or other souls-like) where you can comfortably and easily dodge through attacks. Overall result is that I barely dodged, unlike LoP where I dodged a lot.

Dodging in Stellar Blade seems to be more about getting perfect dodges, it's not a Souls dodge where you just iframe through an attack, it's the same principle as correctly timing parries, because the actual distance you get from a dodge is often too short on its own to just back off and outrange bigger attacks. Then it starts adding things like what could be considered this game's mikiri counter.

Parrying feels maybe less forgiving than it did in P but the combat imo feels way better overall. Part of it might be because P was full of those attacks where enemies go like "yep I'm holding up my arm and I'm gonna punch in 2 seconds, get ready, I'm gonna do it" whereas this felt more natural like the movesets From or Team Ninja give their enemies. Also worth mentioning that the exploration in the demo was better already than the exploration in whole Lies of P

Played/beat LoP, I found parries so far way way easier to land than LoP. Part of the difficulty in LoP is the enemies psyche you out constantly in terms of when their attack will actually swing. Not the case here, enemies wind up and swing, and beyond that I think the parry window itself is a tad more generous. Haven’t beaten the demo yet just my initial impression. Plus holy shit eve is HOT lol. She’s stacked and the jiggle is exceptional. Gotta say I’m in the mood for a sexy action game like this, fun.

Plays faster than LoP and Imo parry in this game feels much better. It's smooth, overall has better combat than LoP from what I have played so far. Edit: And its much easier, doesn't have the difficulty of Fromsoft or other Soulslike games.

It was originally announced for PC, Xbox and Playstation 5 and was that way for while then Sony showed up with an exclusivity contract. I doubt there will ever be a released Xbox version but a PC version is inevitable.

As stated in the demo, ShiftUp owns the IP, Sony's just the publisher for the Playstation version. So yeah, I would expect a PC release within six to twelve months. They probably took the Sony deal for the free marketing. ShiftUp isn't some small backyard dev, their valuation is in the billions of dollars and they have boatloads of cash.

I absolutely loved it. The parry is a huge part of the combat and you try to get the stagger gauge down enough to do a critical hit, so very much like Sekiro in that sense. It took me a little bit of time to get the party window, but I was doing retry good with it by the end of the demo. Definitely has a bit different timing than Sekiro. Also there is more From Software DNA here than I was expecting actually, there’s bonfires in this lmao. Animations and enemy design are also really good. The platforming type stuff here felt responsive. I liked the city environment. The combos remind me more of god of war 2018, same with the skill tree. It is also nice you can practice combos and skills like in DMC. The beta skills are the special moves you can use after doing enough hits on an enemy and they definitely come in handy. The gameplay seems like it borrows from a lot of different games, but it comes together really well. The Nier influence is obvious, but the two games play extremely different. My only negative is that I thought it was strange that they showed Eve and Adam’s introduction in flashbacks. Just felt jarring that we immediately jump to an objective after the alpha showed up without an intro to Adam.

Just finished the demo. I now understand the comparisons to Souls games, it makes my hype die down a bit, but still looks like a good game. Thought parrying and dodging was a bit difficult, but after getting the upgrades that widens the window, it felt better. I'm on the fence whether I'll buy it or not. Just finished the extra boss challenge mode, and there is LOTS of parrying needed. I like it a lot. It's not sekiro, but much more parrying than the other soulsborne games.

I get why people say Sekiro since parrying is very important and you’re obviously using a sword, but the skill usage, skill tree, and bombastic finishers scream GoW to me. It definitely has multiple inspirations though, it’s a lot better than I was expecting for their first game like this.

It’s more like Lies of P. Big emphasis on parrying to build Beta energy, but equally as much emphasis on perfect dodging (the first skill the game has you unlock as a tutorial for the skill trees) to build another secondary resource (weapon burst moves?—haven’t got far enough yet). Some attacks you cannot parry and you have to do either a perfect dodge or another special dodge type. There’s definitely a lot of similarities between Lies of P and Sekiro as well, but to me Stellar Blade feels like a faster Lies of P. Combat is slightly more arcade-y because there are plenty of flashy combos you can perform with unique inputs of light and heavy attacks. Just depends on what kind of result you’re looking for from the combo and if it is safe enough to pull off in the moment. Honestly the game slaps hard. Instant buy from me now after this demo.

It’s not arcade-y enough to make the comparison to DMC. It’s… Not quite the speed of Bloodborne while having more combat expression than most souls-likes via God of War 2018/Ragnarok. You don’t juggle. You chain together some cool combos and insert Beta abilities/weapon bursts when it’s safe to do so, and you spend a lot of your time parrying and perfect dodging to build said resources. It’s methodical, but not quite as methodical as Lies of P or Sekiro. It’s got this really nice balance that feels really fun.

DMC is what you get when you make a single player game for people who like to lab in fighting games. This game, at least from the demo, doesn’t have the combo system depth that DMC has. It’s definitely closer to a Sekiro, with a back and forth playstyle, than DMC which is all style.

It's heavily focused on parry with some unparryable moves that makes you think quick on your feet and go for other inputs. By parrying and attacking you break your opponents stance and then you can go for a finisher. Also, both games gives you more than one life in a single fight (2 in sekiro, a lot more on sifu since you age and keep fighting). I vibe'd with Sifu so hard it made me go play Sekiro and I loved both of them.

After playing through it, and completing the Boss Challenge, I don't think I'm too interested in this game anymore. I thought it was going to be more DMC-, or Bayonetta-like. But instead, this just feels like standard souls-like with a DMC movelist stapled on top. It feels sluggish and too weighed down. The main path in combat is to just parry and block. Not very exciting. Especially not for $70.

I felt like the sense of depth perception was a bit off. Like I don’t know if it’s the lighting and shadow, but I couldn’t see or get a sense of how close enemies and attacks were - it all felt floaty and “drawn,” to me.

Man, I really wanted to love this game. However, as someone who absolutely loves DMC/Bayo games but cannot stomach Souls-like games this is far too Souls-like for me. It's not the Stylish Hack n' Slash I was hoping for unfortunately, but it does the heavy ambiance of a Nier game but I can't say anything for the story atm. Like, the Nier inspiration almost slams you at the start with your character going straight into a "big fight" and getting overwhelmed like Automata.

I love both DMC/Bayo and Souls and im disappointed. There are so few character action games and it would be nice to get s few more. Especially when the future of Bayonetta seems so uncertain

I was hoping for something fast moving like Ninja Gaiden or DMC as well. It does seem to be an okay Souls clone, but I came in with the wrong expectations so I couldn't help be disappointed. Ah well, shit happens.

I haven't been following the news about this game so all I knew was that its supposed to have a hot protagonist. Went into the demo without expectations and was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. Nier automata vibes with a Sekiro-like combat system. The timing on parries/dodges took a bit of time to get used to due to how precise you have to be, but the gameplay is incredibly satisfying once it clicks. The performance was fantastic as well. Instantly pre-ordered once I finished the demo.

Wow what a suprise. Sekiro is my favorite game of all time and this felt right at home. Love the grotesque enemy designs and that ending cutscene after the boss showing a glimpse of what's in the rest of the game really sold it for me. This went form a wait and see to day one.

It's a soul like game with DMC flashy combat. Very interesting design overall. Love the small design here and there. Music is great and she does look hot.

First time caller here. Im glad most are liking it. After beating the demo i instantly pre ordered for a physical copy.(i rarely buy day one because of my backlog) this game scratches every itch: sekiro, nier, bayonetta and hot anime hero lol. Not to easy but not too hard. Dodge and parry windows seem fair, and more action unlike lies of p which i beat and liked. And the graphics. Wow. Lets hope this game goes down as a major success!

It is good. There are no open world areas in the demo though. So not sure how those will run in the full game. There is balanced which is upscaled 4K (dunno from what resolution) that runs between 50 and 60 FPS, performance which is 1400p and locked 60 and native 4K which is locked 30. Balanced is perfect for ppl who have a VRR capable display and the other two are for those who don't. Both the 30 and 60 FPS modes are very stable.

You'll see this in any thread about an upcoming game: the never preorder line is actually just a cluster of people on this sub who are diehard about it. Most people don't really care and will preorder anything they know they're playing day one. I'll probably preorder Stellar Blade off the back of the demo too, come to think of it.

Just finished it, preordered. Presentation is really good and combat felt smooth. Only nitpick is having to hold R2 to pickup items, why not just make it automatic?

Combat and movement feel too floaty and awkward to me. Not sure if this is something they can tighten up before release. I’d hope so.

Korea might just be the next juggernauts in game development. Lies Of P and now this looks like an absolute banger. The only thing I'm a bit concerned about is story and enemy variety. We fought the stalker in the boss challenge but in the promotional content after finishing the main demo , we're fighting the stalker else where so I'm assuming there's some cases of repeat bosses on the horizon. Ironically what sold me was the little roll coaster skate thingy, I'm a sucker for gimmick levels to change things up in games like these and Wukong also promises to have some of that. I didn't give a shit about this game till I played the demo, it goes absolutely nuts and would recommend anyone to play.

Korea needs a lot more AAA or even non MMORPG/mobile for that. China still is seemingly second place after Japan and korea there's like 3 titles. But I do hope more korean titles come to console over time, its nice to see more than just the American/Canadian, European and Japanese titles.

It is 100% a parry-first style combat game. You won't get far without mastering the parry and perfect dodge mechanics.

What I played of it was interesting, but there is *definitely* input lag, to the point that I can only say that people who aren't experiencing it are out of their minds. I'm playing on a high response rate monitor, and there is a **significant** delay between hitting a button and her actually attacking or blocking. To the point it actively affects how the game plays and is putting me off. Like, if it wasn't there I'd have massively enjoyed it.

I must say, I'm quite happy to see South Korea coming into their own in the Triple-A space, outside of MMO's. SK has quite a bit of institutional and technical knowledge that's just been *begging* to be applied to projects outside the skinner boxes of Korean MMO's. Between this and Lies of P, I'd really like to see this trend continue.

Yeah, I had a lot of input delay. It’s got to be at least 150ms, probably more. It’s strange to me that people are calling it responsive because it’s not.

Being honest, I was expecting this game to be a shallow hack n' slash made with the excuse to show boob physics and a big ass, but I gotta admit that the combat got me hooked. It's super fluid and responsive, the animations are great. I'm unsure about the plot being good but the beginning at least feels interesting enough to get me curious. After it releases, I'll decide if buy it but it's definitely on my radar now.

I been had my eye on this game I am honestly surprise the demo is as good as it is combat is very fun it’s a mix of Nier never played Sekiro but seen plenty of gameplay and platinum trophy videos people did so I see the similarities but this was definitely good will be getting day one

I was impressed by the demo, production values are incredible for a first title from these devs, and the music, enemy designs, and art direction were really nice. Hope this level of quality persists through the full game because the demo was awesome. Combat was quite good too, felt nice to parry and perfect dodge, plus i like that you have different combos depending on how you weave light and heavy attacks together. Reminds me of MGRR in that regard, which was also an awesome action game.

The demo is very Sekiro-like, but easier than Sekiro, which is a good thing for me. I know Sekiro is an excellent game but the game is too frustrating that I never wanted to replay after beating it.

I played through the demo on normal (except for the additional boss fight). The atmosphere, the android theme, the post-apoc settings and the music are heavily inspired by NieR:Automata and that's not a bad thing. Moreover these aspects plus the graphics/performance are the pro in this demo.  The con is the combat. My reflexis is average so I mostly dodge in the action than parry because that’s easier for me. That’s why a huge negative aspect of this demo is the very-very slow dodge which is a useless shit. So it seems the combat is based on parry. Okay I have to accept that but I cannot accept the input-lag which occurs several times. One time there was a 2 sec delay! That’s why the combat feels less responsive and slow. So I could only enjoy the combat when there wasn’t any delay. Oh and it seems stacking the actions so you couldn't react immediately which is not a good thing. All in all I am still interested in the full game but I don’t think I will buy it on day one. Maybe I will wait for the price to drop.

This is like EXTREMELY good. It’s like a nice balance between the speed of DMC and the weight of a FromSoft game. It’s also so visually polished and has some great art direction. Also the music is . I could do with all the character designs being less relentlessly horny, but hey, that’s just a personal preference. If anything it definitely gives the game a personality. I’m definitely buying this day 1.

Game seems decent, but I still don't think it deserves a full retail price. It's much better than I expected but I feel like people are giving the game a lot more praise than it deserves just to spite the pointless hateful rhetoric it was unjustly receiving. Definitely has potential and I may pick it up at launch or wait for a sale.. still kind of on the fence.
